My guest for this episode is my yarny friend, Christine Perry, who first made an appearance on the podcast back in 2021. Since chatting back then, we have become friends and when I heard that she was gearing up to a big milestone in her sock-knitting journey, I asked her if she would like to come back onto the podcast and chat about it. Last weekend, on Saturday 3rd May, Christine celebrated a whole decade of encouraging people around the world to. knit socks through her Winwick Mum Sockalong. Christine's main aim is to encourage beginners to get over their fears of knitting in the round, turning heels and Kitchener stitch and be able to set off on their own sock knitting adventures. It worked for me - I think it's highly unlikely that I would ever have attempted to knit a pair of socks before chatting to Christine! I can now proudly say that on Saturday I followed Christine's request to cast on a new pair and get knitting to mark this significant milestone (and this is my 4th pair!).I hope you enjoy listening to our chat! You can find all the details about Christine's 10th anniversary giveaway over on her Winwick Mum blog as well as her free sockalong tutorials. For full show notes for this episode, please visit this page on the Making Stitches Podcast website. To join the mailing list for the Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this linkThe theme music is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops. The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi. Hello and welcome to Episode 50 of Making Stitches and the last episode in this series. As it's the end of the current series, I thought I'd reconnect with a couple of friends of the podcast and catch up with their latest news. My guests for this episode are Sock Knitting Champion; Christine Perry or Winwick Mum as she's known online and Juey from Juey Jumbo Craft Tools who I met at Yarndale in September last year. When I first met Juey, I was stopped in my tracks as I walked past her stall at Yarndale 2021 (you can hear our first meeting Episode 32) . She was crocheting with the biggest Tunisian crochet hook I have ever seen. At the time I spoke to her for the podcast about her business and how it all got started. This time, she went into more detail about how her father first made her a pair of giant knitting needles using a broom handle and how things progressed from there. I first spoke to Christine Perry last year when she featured in Episode 31 speaking about her mission to teach the world to knit socks (Christine can now lay claim to more than 15,000 pairs of socks being knitted around the world using her patterns). Since that first chat, we have been able to meet in person a few times and on our most recent catch up, I took my microphone along to hear all about her latest sock news - her 'Happy Feet' project with West Yorkshire Spinners.Guest links:Juey Jumbo Craft Tools websiteWinwick Mum websiteWest Yorkshire Spinners Happy Feet Pattern Book To join the mailing list for the new Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this link. For full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches website. The music featured in this episode is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops. The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches  Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson. If you would like to buy a PDF crochet pattern for Sophia the Sunflower, (£5 from the sale of every pattern will be donated to the UNHCR Refugee aid effort supporting Ukrainian refugees) you can find the link here.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston.

Hello and welcome to the first episode in series four of Making Stitches Podcast. It has been a very busy summer for me researching stories and makers to share with you on the podcast as well as working on my own creative projects too. It's a real joy to be back with you! In this episode we hear from Christine Perry, who you may know better as Winwick Mum, a champion of sock knitting who has made it her life's work to simplify the sock-knitting process so anyone can achieve success and knit their own socks. Christine's knitting journey began in earnest at the age of 18 when she saw a jumper she simply had to have and her mother told her to knit it herself. It wasn't until several years later though, that her obsession with knitting socks began. After being told that knitting socks was too difficult too many times at a knit and natter group, Christine decided to make her own tutorial to demystify the process and published it on her blog; Winwick Mum. That was when the 'Sockalong' was born and in the six years since, over 15,000 pairs of socks have been knitted around the world using Christine's tutorials - and those are just the ones she knows about! She went on to write two books with sock patterns in and has her own YouTube channel in which she shows the process of creating socks. Christine has also designed a range of sock yarns for West Yorkshire Spinners. Christine was a joy to talk to and her enthusiasm for her craft is truly infectious. I can imagine an awful lot of new sock projects will be cast on after listening to this! On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking embroidery and design with my guest Karen Barbé. Karen is a designer, embroiderer, and author from Santiago, Chile now living in Chicago. Since 2007 she's been inspiring and teaching thousands of makers through her blog and Instagram account, with in-person and online classes, and with her book Colour Confident Stitching. Noticing how her students felt frustrated about their color choices, Karen set out to teach about color in an accessible way. Her book —published in four languages—and her Domestika online class present a simple and hands-on method that helps makers understand color and create palettes for their own textile projects. She's now exploring embroidery on paper, creating digital patterns, and collaborating with diverse Latin American craftspeople through the Chilean platform Artesanos en Feria. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Flying Fibers. Because I was a bit of a numpty, I saved Episode 62 in the wrong audio file and so it didn't migrate to all the podcast platforms.  I am adding it again as an MP3 so that it will now appear on Spotify etc.     Hello there and welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast and the show notes for Episode 62 – Breathe  My name is Fay and this is my audio and video podcast for those that love fibre crafts, particularly crochet.  It’s a community for people that like to support their fellow humans regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, size or age. I hope you feel the welcome embrace and love of the Crochet Clan.  Come on in and stay awhile.   In this episode, I cover Final Destination, En Route, Interview snippets with Alyson Chu about Moorit Magazine, Feeding the Habit, Designs in Progress, Quick News Beats and J’adore.     This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, Amazon, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon:    1 – Final Destination I have a couple of crocheted pieces to show you today.  First up is a big, bright, clashy blanket that I absolutely loved working on.  It is made from West Yorkshire Spinners Re:Treat wool (link) which is a roving yarn from Bluefaced Kerry Hill sheep.  It is 140m/153yds per 100g, so chunky wool.  It is oh so warm when you have worked it up and the stitch definition you get with this wool in crochet is excellent.  The final fabric has a great drape to it and the palette of 17 colours that West Yorkshire Spinners have created make really great cohesive blends or clashy like this one.     The Strata Blanket is launching in issue 132 of Inside Crochet which is available in newsagents from today and is also available online (link). I pulled together a photo tutorial for the fringing too.  Who doesn’t love a crochet/macrame mash-up! I do plan to sell this as a standalone pattern when I get the rights back for it, but it’s on the list with a few others…   My second FO is a hat that I have created as part of the kick-starter campaign for Moorit Magazine.  It’s a companion design to the Positivity Spiral Cowl. I used Nene 4ply from RiverKnits which is 100% Bluefaced Leicester (non-superwash) and is grown and spun in the UK.  The colourway is Sommerlicher Nachthimmel (link) and it’s a deep turquoise/teal colour with small variegations down to a mid-teal.  This wool was a delight to work with.  I have a worked with a lot of RiverKnits yarn as a crocheter and I can tell you that there is a marked difference between the 100% BFL superwash that they used to stock and their new Nene 100% BFL non-superwash wool.  It’s softer, has better drape, actually smells of sheep and as you are working with it, it feels more organic and a lot less formulaic than the old superwash version.     The hat is based on the same open structure as the positivity spiral and uses the same stitches to get that lovely left slant to the pattern.  This is another pattern that will be available for general purchase, but only after it has been delivered as part of the rewards for the Moorit Magazine kick-starter campaign (link) - more on that shortly.  The first people to get it will be the £55+ backers of Moorit Magazine and then after that, it will be on general release through all my usual outlets.       2 – En Route For too long, I have had a parcel sat at the side of the sofa from Zoe at The Woolist (link).  Zoe undertook a four year PhD on the 72 British pure breeds of sheep. Part of her ongoing work is to connect with local farmers, suppliers, producers, makers, designers, crafters and create a knowledge base available on her website.  This means a wealth of information is available at our fingertips. Zoe often travels to yarn shows and has a stand where she shows off samples of the 72 breeds knitted up.  Me being me, I offered to crochet up the 72 breeds so that she could also have crocheted samples on her stand.         This was not a wholly selfless act.  There are very few people that have worked with all 72 breeds, and probably far, far fewer that have crocheted with them.  So, being sent a parcel of all 72 British sheep breeds is actually a dream come true.  I am nearly halfway through and have been diligently taking notes on each breed and photographing them all before and after.  Needless to say, this is a huge piece of work and one that will take me a few more months to pull together.  However, it will all culminate in more resources for those of us that like to crochet with British breed wools.    3  – Interview Snippets with Alyson Chu of Moorit Magazine At the end of January, I had a chat with Alyson about Moorit Magazine and the kick-starter campaign that she was about to launch to fund the magazine. Moorit promises to be a high-end crochet magazine with indie spirit!  As I type this, the campaign has smashed way beyond the £10,600 target and the £12,500 stretched target.  The current amount is £18,750 which allows money to roll over into Issue 2 (yay) and for the more copies of Issue 1 to be printed.    I encourage you to go and look at the Moorit Magazine website (link), follow it on Instagram (link) and to go to the Kickstarter campaign page and pledge of you can (link).  Even though the funds have been pledged for Issue 1, extra funding gives Alyson the backing of the crochet community and the confidence to plough ahead with ideas for Issue 2.  I am SO excited that the crochet community has backed Moorit so wholeheartedly.  Snippets of the interview were used in the podcast and the whole interview can be found on Youtube (link) and Podbean (link).        4  – Feeding the Habit Only one thing has been purchased this month and that is a house! No incoming wool.  You know you don’t really need any for a while when your removal team says “You have a lot of wool. Did you know you have 13 boxes of it?”  My response was to laugh and say “they were only the boxes you could see through.  There’s more!”   Also, I was podcasting in a little oasis of calm, surrounded by boxes and stock:   Yes that is a massive bottle of gin on the kitchen island!   5 – Designs in Progress Thank you so much for your responses to me sharing my design process.  It is very clear that this is something that you are interested in whether that is because you are intrigued by the process, or because you want to start designing. Because the response has been so great, I want to develop it into a proper podcast section and do it justice.  Therefore, I haven’t rushed into pulling something to deliver for this month’s podcast.  Instead, I will pull together a proper plan and launch it in the next podcast.  What I can say is that I also plan to hold Zoom session every 2-3 months for budding designers.  We can talk through the design topic that has just been covered in that last podcast.  I also hope to invite along some of my design and yarn buddies so that you can gain extra insight from them.   6 – Quick News Beats 1 - Global Hook Up – The February hook ups are scheduled for: Saturday 20th at 8pm GMT and Sunday 21st at 9am GMT. There is a caveat though.  Our internet at the new house is shocking and I will be able to host the session if I can tether my phone to the tablet, or if our fibre has been connected by then.  The meeting ID number is 475-047-5819 and you will need to join via Zoom which you can do here:  https://www.zoom.us/join  if a password is required, it is WOOL. If you are joining on your phone or tablet you will likely need to download the software in advance.  If you are joining from a PC or Mac, you can join via the link above.  Everyone needs to use the same ID number to get into the session.    7 – J’adore I found a new podcast/vlog called Talasbaun on YouTube (link).  It’s a young couple that is living an off-grid life in a forest cabin in Sweden.  It is beautifully shot and gives a real insight into off-grid living, working traditional crafts and small scale farming with nose to tail practices. I will add a content warning though.  They are farmers and eat their own livestock.  There are scenes of butchery and raw meat, which will not be for everyone. I’ll be back on the 5th of March!  Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite

Jessica James-Thomson loves yarn! Her Nana taught her to knit as a youngster in Oregon, and there was no stopping her after she learned the basics. Ginger Twist Studio opened its doors in June 2013, and it is the cutest wee shop! Jessica feels very fortunate to have been able to take something she feels so passionate about and turn it into a career. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jess for this podcast.  During our conversation, she opened up about her move from the U.S. to Scotland to make a change. She also offered some great reminders about executing goals with persistence and focus. Is there something you want to bring to fruition? If so, what is your best next step? I hope this episode provides you with some inspiration.  Here is some more background about Jess and her shop: Ginger Twist Studio is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The shop is adorable. It is stacked to the rafters with delicious yarns, pattern books, and accessories. The offerings include a wide range of beautiful yarns hand-dyed by Jess. There are yarns for a variety of budgets to get your creative juices flowing, including Ginger's Hand Dyed, West Yorkshire Spinners, Brigantia, New Leaf Yarns, Bearford Flock, Navia, Woolyknit and much more! Visit her online shop to get some inspiration for your next project. And why not check out her virtual YARN CONCIERGE SERVICE? Proudly, the stock in the shop is finely curated. Jessica only stocks what she wants to knit with and can continue to be incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about everything in the shop.  Tune in to hear Jessica's thoughts pertaining to: Jessica sweeps us away with a description of her shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. (3:14) Her journey from the U.S. to Scotland and her transition from musical theatre to knitting and threads.(5:29) Acclimating to Scotland was somewhat easy because she felt like she belonged, attended school, and had connections in a new country. (9:53) How Jess got started in knitting and why it stayed with her. (12:24) There is a deliciousness to yarn. (13:23) The materials and history of knitting in Scotland. (16:28) Knitting is like meditation. A career coaching client of Melissa’s was a media professional who began a knitting club for relaxation. (21:07) Why knitting is no longer essential, but a luxury instead. (24:28) Jessica fits her business efforts into her day as a one-woman shop owner and how not having a backup plan helped Jess achieve her goals. (26:12) Jess describes a virtual yarn crawl that recently occurred and how she is trying to keep up business during the pandemic. (37:31) How to manage burnout and have a positive outlook. (42:31) Tune in to hear me ask Jessica this fundamental question:  When I look at a beautiful yarn creation, I feel intimidated. I think the same about my most ambitious goals. In what ways can knitting or crocheting help someone with big dreams move their needle in the right direction one stitch at a time?  Links to quench your curiosity: Admire Yarn Creations on Instagram Visit the Ginger Twist Studio Online

Project Updates Marsha finished Mountain High by Heidi Kirrmaier using The Croft Shetland Tweed by West Yorkshire Spinners that she bought at the The Yarn Cake in Glasgow. The sweater fits beautifully and she’s happy with her modifications. She is still looking for a pullover pattern for her brother using New Lanark Wool & Textiles DK that she bought at the mill in New Lanark, Scotland last March. Kelly continues to work on Koru by Aroha Knits using the Dragonfly Fibers Dance Rustic Silk She ripped out the mistake and is now making good progress. She also finished 5 hats from spirit yarn (destash yarn): Caron Simply soft Mardi Gray. Variegated gray with soft pink, yellow and green. Acrylic yarn, called Mardi Gray. It was a full bag of 4 balls, 150 yards in each ball. Dyeing Techniques Discussion The Ewes answer a dyeing questionMomdiggity/Jo Ann, who asked, “I would love to hear you talk about your fiber dying techniques.” Kelly and Marsha talk about choosing and blending colors, the different techniques they’ve tried over the years and in particular under-dyeing and over-dyeing.  Kelly tells about her natural dyeing experiments and Marsha found two dyeing classes on Craftsy (now Bluprint) that she thinks she may try. Both are taught by Sarah Eyre. Professional Yarn Dyeing at Home: dyeing solids, semi-solids speckled, and variegated. Discusses yarns, dyes, mordants, safety, gear and studio set up. Next Steps in Dyeing: gradients, sock blanks, self-striping, hand-painted, dyeing fibers. Twenty Stitches Notecard Giveaway The Two Ewes are having a giveaway for notecards that they received as a promotion from the  Twenty Stitches booth at Stitches West. Twenty Stitches has beautiful cards, tags, gift boxes, and kits to make them. Here is an description of the product from the website. Project Updates Marsha has finished the body and one sleeve of a pullover Mountain High by Heidi Kirrmaier (again!) using The Croft Shetland Tweed by West Yorkshire Spinners that she bought at the The Yarn Cake in Glasgow. She also swatched with New Lanark Wool & Textiles DK that she bought at the mill in New Lanark, Scotland last March. She is looking for a sweater pattern for her brother. Kelly continues to work on Koru by Aroha Knits using the Dragonfly Fibers Dance Rustic Silk that she bought last year at Stitches. Somehow she began using the left chart on the right and the right chart on the left so there is about 2-3 inches that need to be ripped out. The back and two fronts of the Sonny Bono jacket are done. Kelly will definitely need more yarn for the two sleeves and collar. There is about a skein and a half left and a call to Amazing Yarns is needed. Gauntlet was thrown down by Heddicraft who finished a linen bath mitt from 2 retreats ago. So Kelly dug in her stash for NoCKRs spirit yarn with a goal to use something up before the retreat.  She is making hats from a variegated gray with soft pink, yellow and green. Acrylic yarn, called Mardi Gray. It was a full bag of 4 balls, 150 yards in each ball, so she plans at least 4 hats. Thank You Patrons! What did we wear on the Stitches West carpet? Marsha wore her cardigan Cloud Cover and her handspun combo spin sweater made with Simple Summer Tweed pattern. Both patterns are by Heidi Kirrmaier. Kelly wore the  Mystery Knit Along with Cozy Up Knits using the Two Ewes Replenish Rambouillet and the Running Water cardigan by Claudia Eisenkolb. What did we work on at Stitches West? Marsha exclusively worked on a pullover Mountain High by Heidi Kirrmaier (again!) using The Croft Shetland Tweed by West Yorkshire Spinners that she bought at the The Yarn Cake in Glasgow. Marsha has a finished object her Slack Tide Scarf by Poststitch for her brother Kelly worked on Koru by Aroha Knits using the Dragonfly Fibers Dance Rustic Silk that she bought last year at Stitches. However, with three traveling stitch charts, it wasn’t the best choice for social knitting. Anticipating the need for a second project Kelly brought an in-progress Mother Bear and a kit of leftover yarns. She got one bear to the point of needing some stuffing and started a second bear. What did we see at Stitches Ellen’s Wooly Wonders has fabulous patterns including Daphne’s Skull Amazing Yarns is where Kelly found her dream project. New cast on! Lady Dye Yarns had great colors and her signature “BadA$$ Knitter,” Sheep Fro, and other bags. Neighborhood Fiber Company is full of beautiful yarns as always. It’s one of our favorites. At Bay Street Yarns, Anne, spent some time talking to us about her Fire Relief yarns. Knitting on the Fringe had a wide variety of non-yarn products, including Fair Trade felted bags. New friends from Stitches The Two Ewes met some great new fiber friends including Rhonda Waipahu who came to Stitches all the way from Pennsylvania, Noelle in the double knit class who recognized Kelly’s voice, Drummer Girl Creations aka Drummergirlmakes aka Patricia was at the show with her two boys. Later the Ewes met Marisa Quiltotaku who came with their friend Marianne, and Pamela who they met briefly last year but got to talk with more this year. She came with their friend Alissa. They tried to talk the Ewes into going to the pajama party, but the Ewes couldn’t stay up that late!  They also met Sarah, Imagined Landscapes, gnome designer extraordinaire! Madrona Fiber Arts Marsha attended The Madrona Fiber Arts with her friend Kim. The show had a nice market. They stopped by the Brooklyn Tweed booth where Kim mentioned to Luigi Boccia that the sweater she made several years ago with Loft and developed holes. Luigi explained the company discovered the original Loft was too fragile and has reformulated yarn. He extended a discount to each of us to try the yarn again. So a huge thank you to Luigi for doing this and for those knitters and crocheters who may have had a similar experience, do give the yarn another try. Recommendations Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism by Safiya Umoja Noble. This book reads like a textbook and takes both concentration and familiarity with the academic language of social justice studies. Kelly is really enjoying this listen but has looked up words, used the repeat button, looked up phrases,, and bookmarked clips a lot! Welcome to The Crochet Circle Podcast. Here are the show notes from Episode Eleven - HOP to it.    In this episode I will cover: Yay Crochet or Nay Crochet; the final instalment of Yarn Club Review; Book Review of Raw by The Crochet Project; Take Two; Quod the Rav; The scene for 2017, New World Order and the final segment What's Good?   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co.  Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon:   Thanks to everyone that tunes in to our podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, iTunes or our new YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated. We love doing the podcast and it makes it even more worthwhile knowing that there are people that really love it and are sat at their computers pressing refresh on publish day!    The people that both have a birthday on publish date are Christinadesigns (Christina) and Felicious (Felicia) - Happy Birthday both!   1. Yay crochet or nay crochet It's a yay.  Last podcast I showed a crocheted baby blanket for Emma and her new daughter Matilda.  Emma comes to the crochet and knitting club that I run, Woolgathering Sandbach, and a few of us crocheted the baby blanket.  I really love making things for other people, especially little folk.     Winkie has also finished the postal scarf that we have been working on.  He really loves it but says it's a little itchy and needs washing!  Take a look at how cute he is in it:   2. Yarn club review The final instalment of the Yarn Club Review covers off an ongoing blanket subscription and details of a new shawl club subscription that is open at the moment. Becca, another Woolgatherer (PixieCaticus on IG and Ravelry), signed up to a blanket club ten months ago.  Every month she has received 3 x 50g of hand-dyed superwash Merino from one of two indie dyers - Dye Candy (dyecandy on IG) or Unbelievawool (unbelievawool on IG) and the next stage of the blanket pattern.   The banket subscription is £21 a month and Becca has two months left to go.  She has really enjoyed receiving the yarn through the post and she like many others found that there was yarn leftover, so the dyers offered an extended pattern for those that wanted to do it.  She has also kept on top of the club by making the next set of hexagons within a couple of days of them arriving and will still have yarn leftover which she can use for other projects.     The other part of the yarn subscription review that I wanted to point you towards is a new shawl club by Vicki Brown. I saw what she was up to on Instagram and emailed her for more details.         The Crochet Shawl Club: Starting from January 2017 Vicki will be launching one crochet shawl pattern every two months as part of a club. Every other month (January, March, May, July, September and November) she will produce a box which will include a printed pattern and hand-dyed yarn to work up that shawl (dyed by Vicki exclusively for this club).  Each box will be available to purchase singly and will go on sale a month prior to shipping or you can sign up to all six for a fabulous saving (£20). Each shawl pattern will be new and exclusive to box subscribers for two months, after which time the pattern will become available to purchase individually. All yarn will be sock/4ply weight and will be on a range of bases and fibres varying from month to month. However, she can happily accommodate any allergies or personal dislikes. All patterns will use a 3.5mm or 4mm hook. The first box and the full subscription are available to purchase now over on etsy. Single boxes are priced at £20 and include UK postage, postage within Europe is an additional £1.50 and postage for the rest of the world is an additional £3 For the full 6 month collection, the cost is £100 and includes UK postage. Postage within Europe is an additional £9 and £18 for the rest of the world. The contents will remain a mystery until they have been delivered to your door, but you can find some sneak peeks over on Vickie's instagram page. Vicki has also very kindly offered one of the shawl clubs up as a prize for one Crochet Circle listener/viewer - more on that in the future...   3. Book Review - Raw by The Crochet Project I was very kindly sent a digital copy of Raw by the lovelies at The Crochet Project in collaboration with Blacker Yarns.  As you know, I won't review a book unless I have crocheted at least one thing from it.  You can see from the below photo, I have managed to make both the Mamble socks and the Newham hat from the book. The book has six patterns - a cardigan, sweater, socks, shawl and matching mittens and hat. It was all crocheted using Blacker Yarns in natural shades, showcasing British breeds.             The socks are toe-up in construction and I used a yarn that had very little elasticity but is lovely and warm and very sheepy! Having already made a pair of Joanne's crocheted socks, I was familiar with her style, although this one had a different heel construction.  I found the sock easy enough to crochet, although I struggled a little with the heel construction. The first time I tried it out I found it hard to keep track of where the heel steps were, called a bridge stitch (this will make sense to you when you read the pattern).  I ripped it out and started the heel part again. putting a place market on each decrease, now knowing that I needed to be able to identify them better.  That did the trick.  I couldn't find and reference to bridge stitch anywhere so I am not sure if it something that Joanne has created.  It works for the construction but took a bit of fiddling.  The socks are lovely to wear and I would like to crochet these again in something like Socks Yeah or West Yorkshire Spinners so that I can compare them to my first pair.     The Newham hat has been crocheted in 100% Merino Knit by Numbers from John Arbon. I played around with the hat construction a little because I like quite a tight hat and the book photos show it being looser on Joanne.  I really loved the rib construction for the brim which is crocheted as one long piece and then joined to make a round before picking up stitches.  The pattern shows a simple colourwork chart that you go by to create the pattern in the round.  This is really easy to follow but unfortunately, when I started this part of the hat I was really quite ill and mucked it up a little.  Luckily my two colours aren't in high contrast so it isn't really obvious.  This is not a shortfall of the pattern, I was really quite poorly!  I love the finished hat and it is gorgeous to wear.   Overall, with Raw you get exactly what you would expect from Kat and Joanne at The Crochet Project - really nice simple patterns with interesting design elements, beautiful photography and good yarn choices. The book is available on their website and is £10 for the digital copy and £12 plus P&P for the hard copy which includes a digital download code.  It is written in UK crochet terminology and the US terms are given in the abbreviations.   I would recommend this book.  There is something for all types of crocheters and if natural shades aren't your thing, it is simple to change to colours.      4. Take Two TAKE TWO is a collection of 8 crochet patterns, each shown as two designs - sixteen patterns. You can buy: A printed copy (which includes an instant digital download) £12 from here.  I am fingers crossed hoping that the hard copy books will arrive in the third week of December so that I can post them out ASAP.   or   A digital copy for £10 here or by searching for Take Two on Ravelry in books.            I would love to see your finished makes and you can add them to the Ravelry page FO thread and use #TakeTwoCrochet to share your makes on Instagram.   5. Quod the Rav Ravelry is huge, both in terms of the number of people that use it but also the functionality that it has to offer.  In this new section, I want to show some of the things that Ravelry can do and ways that you can use it to get the most from the site.  It can be quite an intimidating website so I am hoping to demonstrate how you can really use it to your benefit and help others to do the same through the way that you use and record projects on Ravelry. In this podcast, I wanted to cover how you can try to verify whether a pattern is worth purchasing or not?  A question was asked in the group thread and so I have pulled together some information on how I check a pattern out pre-purchase.  I have used a pattern that I have purchased, knitted, recorded and people have found helpful.                           In case you are wondering why this section is called Quod the Rav, you can blame Eddie Izzard and his sketch on Latin.   6. Setting the scene for 2017  At the beginning of 2016, I set myself a few crafting goals that I wanted to achieve by the end of 2016.  These have given me a gentle steer through my 2016 crafting and I have achieved or been working towards all of them: 1 - Learn how to make socks.  So far I have knitted ten pairs and crocheted three pairs and will hopefully reach 14  by the end of the year (festive socks for Jenny and The Duke). 2 - Learn how to do colourwork.  I took part in a KAL and used it as a project to work with British breeds and test my colourwork skills.  I also learned to do crochet colourwork with the Newham hat from Raw. 3 - Dye some of my own yarn.  I organised a workshop in September and a bunch of us dyed British yarns.  It was great fun and I am working my way through my own hand-dyed yarn which makes projects even more special. 4 - Take part in CAL/KALs.  I have taken part in two KALs but up until now haven't found a CAL that I wanted to do.  Luckily, we have the Christmas CAL coming up (details further down) which I am very excited about! 5 - Put better project notes up on Ravelry.  I have really tried hard on this one.  I get so much help from going through other people's projects that I feel I should offer the same level of detail.  There is no doubt that it is time consuming but I love going back and seeing how much work went into projects. 6 - Take better photos of my projects.  I can see the difference in the photos that I take now compared to when I started on Ravelry.  To me this helps to sell myself as the owner of KNIT IT - HOOK IT - CRAFT IT and a podcaster, so hopefully my photos will only get better as time goes on. I am going to open a thread on Ravelry called Setting the scene for 2017.  I will add my crafting goals for 2017 (I will also be talking about them in the January podcast) into that thread and you are all very welcome to do the same.  My plan is to review it every quarter to see if I want to focus on other things or document what has really caught my attention - like making socks has in 2016!   Get thinking, what do you want to be working in 2017?     7. New world order As you are all aware, Lynne is no longer doing the podcast and so I wanted to reassure people that I have every intention of continuing to podcast on a monthly basis.  Podcasting is a great way for me to get inside the crafting industry and understand what is happening and how I can be part of that.  It makes me craft more, want to learn new techniques to share with you and it is a great way of engaging with lots of lovely people about this very yarny passion. So here is what you can expect from The Crochet Circle Podcast in 2017: 1 - A podcast that is published on the first Friday of every month for video on YouTube and also audio via Podbean etc. 2 - Vlog style videos on YouTube showing my yarn based antics and general bits and bobs. 3 - The usual content on social media.  My intention is to focus mainly on Instagram because it allows me to show off yarn-based things so easily, share your makes (tag crochet_circle) and it is a very positive social media space.  I will put the occasional thing out on Twitter but most content will be on IG. 4 - Continue to grow the content and engagement in our Ravelry thread. We have so many lovely people that post in that thread and long may it continue.  At some point, I may have to ask whether others want to come forward as moderators. 5 - I want to keep the standard sections like Yay crochet or nay crochet, WIPs, FOs, Feeding the habit, What's good and of course reviews when there is something to review. 6 - I work with a lot of different yarns and so that I can review them all and let you see what I am working on, I am going to pull together a yarn review format for Instagram.  That way I can let you know what I think of the yarn but I can show off more yarns rather than having to wait for the podcast.  If you aren't on Instagram, all of my Crochet Circle photos are automatically uploaded onto Pinterest. 7 - I want to introduce some new sections like Quod the Rav.  Others will come as the podcast moves into this new phase, but I want it to be informative, useful and fun.   8. Christmas CAL  There is a lot of excitement about a Christmas CAL!  I opened up a thread on Ravelry with a poll and 88% wanted to work from the same pattern with 12% wanting to choose their own.  So that everyone can be happy I think that CAL should be either! For those of you that want to work from the same one pattern, take to the Christmas CAL thread to decide which pattern you all want to work from - you just need to decide in enough time to make sure you have enough yarn and are ready for the CAL start date.   The CAL starts on the 24th December 2016 and the end date is the 31st January 2017, so choose a project that is realistic for that timeline. I am going to cast on two things (possibly three)!  The pattern that you folks choose for the CAL and another of my own choice (and possibly a new design that is currently bubbling in the recess of my brain). I may have purchased some Christmas themed yarn from Vickie Brown...   9. What's good? The reaction to the fact that I am going to continue with the podcast has been lovely.  It is a shame that Lynne no longer wants to continue with it but I am really heartened by the fact that so many people want the podcast to continue and are supportive of my solo endeavours - thank you, you lovely people!   Happy listening, watching, festive season and crocheting.   Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite

In this episode of the podcast, we recap the glorious madness that was Yarnporium, chat with the amazing Tara Swiger, and look ahead to our crafting plans for the holiday season. The Loveliest Yarn Company is a new online yarn shop bringing you the loveliest yarn and knitting accessories.  Buying yarn online can be a bit fraught so they have gathered the best into one place.  They have knit, washed and worn everything so people know it’s all been tried and tested by knitters. The Loveliest Yarn Company stock artisan hand dyed yarn from Life in the Long Grass, organic merino from Rosy Green Wool, some great stalwarts of the yarn world from West Yorkshire Spinners, irresistible accessories from Merchant and Mills and lots more.  All from theloveliestyarncompany.co.uk. Sponsored by The Fibre Company, Fig Tree Yarns and John Arbon Textiles What we're working on: Rachel has finally cast on her #Vestvember project: Aileen by Laura Aylor, in some lovely natural brown alpaca that her Other Half brought back from Peru long ago. She finished Helen Stewart's gorgeous Sonder Shawl in a mad, political panic-fueled couple of days in front of the TV last week, and has been spinning some Coomassie Blue BFL for a handspun Fauske from the Nordlándda Collection. Allison has been working on the Gryffindor Scarf for Mr. H for Christmas and has also been working on the Sonder Shawl but not as quickly as Rachel. Allison is also longingly hoping to get back to her Creature Comforts Cardi that she started back in the spring but in the meantime applying her new two-at-a-time-toe-up socks skills to a pair of bedsocks out of birthday handspun from Rachel. She also managed to spin cotton in Rachel's spinning class at the retreat and is looking forward to holiday time in Canada. Overwhelmed: We are feeling a bit overwhelmed in this episode. On the one hand, we are overwhelmed by the incredibly wonderful response to The Yarnporium - many, many thanks to our sponsors, vendors, teachers and volunteers, without whom this event would never have happened. We are also looking ahead to feeling overwhelmed by the upcoming holidays, and the desire to Make All The Things for our loved ones. We had the opportunity to speak with the lovely, enthusiastic, and all around wonderful human being, Tara Swiger, of www.taraswiger.com and the Explore Your Enthusiasm podcast at the recent Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza. Tara talked with us about how to deal with overwhelm during this oh-so-fraught time, and how to decide what to focus on to ensure that the holiday season is a happy and healthy one. *** You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. November 1st is the last day to get your early bird pricing on advance tickets.  After that you'll have to pay £10 for a day ticket and £15 for a weekend ticket. What we’re working on:  Rachel is knitting Green Memories by La Maison Rililie.  Allison is comfort knitting. Destressing with a Hogwarts scarf for Harry and the slowly growing Garter Goodness shawl by Stephen West.  More Yarnporium awesome-ness: There are a few more Yarnporium special events to highlight: Pom Pom Quarterly will be hosting designer signings with Stephen West and Justyna Lorkowska! Justyna there on Saturday from 11am to 1pm and Stephen from 1-3pm. Stephen will also be around on Sunday from noon to 2pm.  A Yarn Story will be bringing in an uber special exclusive: La Bien Aimée hand-dyed yarn from Paris. AYS is bringing a selection of colours on the Merino Singles base. They will also be bringing yarns from Hedgehog Fibres, The Fibre Co., Julie Asselin and SweetGeorgia Yarns.  Inspiration Knits designer Louise Zass-Bangham will be bringing her book Knit Play Colour along with yarns for many of the patterns. She will have a wide selection of yarn from the Countess Ablaze (who NEVER does yarn shows but sells online only or out of her Manchester studio) and also a wide variety from Eden Cottage Yarns. It's a lovely way for both of these yarn companies to be at the Yarnporium when they couldn't otherwise!  Midwinter Yarns have a new Aran weight yarn in 6 natural shades called Suomivilla that they are bringing to the Yarnporium. They also have official Baa-ble Hat kits that include the original pattern by Donna Smith, or people may be interested in getting the yarn to make Donna's new hat and cowl pattern!  Kettle Yarn Co. are debuting their brand new Baskerville DARK yarn which contains more Gotland than the original for added depth and halo to Linda's already gorgeous colours. She's offering 10% off purchases of Baskerville DARK skeins to the first 10 customers who use the codeword "GOTLANDFOREVER".   We're also delighted that designer Karie Westermann is joining us all the way from Glasgow. Karie doesn't get down south too often to teach so we feel it's a real coup to have her! Even better, Karie has designed a brand new workshop that is being taught for the first time at the Yarnporium: Knitting the Landscape. In this workshop Karie will help knitters explore how to express their memories and thoughts of a specific place through their knitting using texture, stitch patterns and colour.  While we're crazy for all the yarn fumes that will be at the Yarnporium, it's also a perfect weekend to start Christmas gift shopping and many of our vendors will have non-yarny items for all the BKFFs out there include Wendy Fowler's gorgeous yarn bowls, glass stitch markers brought in by C.C. Almon of JavaPurl Designs, and wonderful project bags by The Little Grey Girl. Joe's Toes and The Knitting Shed also have fantastic kits if you'd like to make something for little people on your list.   We're also excited to welcome new vendors Mahliqa (knitted jewellery kits), Chunky Row and Once Upon a Time Skeins as well as local to London yarn dyers Travelknitter, Whimzy, The Wool Kitchen and Easyknits and local fibre dyer Porpoise Fur!  Finally, Sarah from Crafts from the Cwtch will be taking over our Instagram feed on the Saturday of the show - be sure to say hi! Woolly Wovember:  WOVEMBER is an amazing grass-roots movement to recognise and celebrate wool in all it's forms. Read their open letter to the Campaign for Wool and see how to get involved. There's starting to be a crispness to the air which means that knitting season is here! We're a little giddy over this small fact and are ready to cast on ALL. THE. THINGS. Sponsor: The Loveliest Yarn Company is a new online yarn shop bringing you the loveliest yarn and knitting accessories. Podcast listeners can get 10% off in September with the code YITCEnabled2016.  If you aren’t shopping for yarn at the moment, sign up for their newsletter on the site.  News and Events: Only a handful of tickets are left for this year's GLYC. Get your tickets here for this weekend! September 5th - Knitflix, part of the Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival. More details posted in our Ravelry group here. September 16-18 – Kirstie Allsop presents The Handmade Fair at Hampton Court Palace September 24-25 – Masham Sheep Fair, Masham  September 24-25 – Yarndale, Skipton Auction Mart (where you can get your Porpoise Fur and YITC fix) September 25th - London Wool Fair & Sheep Drive - happening around Monument and London Bridge and featuring 40 craft and fashion accessories market stalls, 12 street food stalls and 4 fashion pods with displays and a display showing the story of wool. The event will also feature the Band of the Irish Guard and their Irish wolfhound mascot. September 29-October 2 – Loch Ness Knit Fest in Inverness, Scotland September 30-October 2 – Made on Holiday Yarn in the Country retreat in Devon. We're excited to have been invited by Made on Holiday to teach at their retreat and are looking forward to a fantastic weekend playing with colour. There's 10% off registration for YITC listeners - just use code GLYC2016 when making your booking. What we're working on: Rachel has cast on for the Espresso Macchiato socks in her excitement with the start of knitting season. Her latest huge shawl is almost done but finishing was thwarted by missing yarn. Allison has FINALLY finished the never-ending Toddler Hoodie (which had almost never ending ends to weave in thanks to the stripes). She's also finished crocheting an Easy Ripple baby blanket (minus the border) and has moved back to finishing her Because Sock Yarn shawl. Knitting Season: Both of us are making plenty of plans of what to knit next now that the weather is starting to turn! We chat about our goals, all the things we want to cast on and how we get ourselves organised for the best knitting season of the year. Apparently there's a whole back-to-school philosophy that we agree on and a heavy amount of pre-processing is involved. We also decide that Kate Bostwick's upcoming Lambton Panes KAL should be the "unofficial KAL" leading up to November's Yarnporium. Join us? Wrap up: We hope you’ll make a plan to join us on Saturday, September 10th for the Great London Yarn Crawl. Tickets are selling quickly so get yours soon!  You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. Everyone’s really friendly and we hope to see you there! Have a great couple of weeks and we’ll chat with you soon! You can also use a project bag or stitch marker by a podcaster! The design, yarn/fiber and/or project bag must be from a knitting/crochet/fiber podcaster. (Not all 3, just one of those to qualify). Spinning also counts, just make sure it’s a finished product. Use the chatter thread for discussion. Make suggestions. There are TONS of podcasts out there and almost no one knows about all of them, so if you know of a podcaster designer/yarnie/bag maker, feel free to share with us! Winters in Fort McMurrary are incredibly cold and woolies would be very welcome. Check out Ramona's blog to learn more about how you can help. Knits are being collected until the end of September. What we’re working on Rachel is knitting a big ass shawl - Lothian by Justyna Lorkowska. She's finised her Lambton Panes by Cowtown Knits, and made a bit of progress over her holiday on her Knightsbridge Shawl by Anniken Allis for the #LCGcraftalong, but is sadly probably not going to finish in time... Allison is crocheting. And finished the toddler hoodie. Except for weaving in the ends and sewing it up, so it actually doesn't really count. She also regrets ever saying that she missed Rachel. ;-) She's almost done with the second mitt for Because Sock Yarn, also for the #LCGcraftalong, and may finish the shawl in time - woot! Here are the Show Notes from Episode Five.   In this episode we continue with our crochet journeys, including helpful hints on how to get through the next stages of working on a garment; Yay Crochet or Nay Crochet; World Knit in Public Day; WIP Wall and FOs along with our usual Magazine round-up, our competition winners so far, our new regular feature called "Feeding the Rabbit" and we finish with What's Good.   This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co. and Lynne Rowe Knitting and Crochet Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile.    If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon:       1. Yay Crochet or Nay Crochet It's a Nay Crochet from Lynne this month, as she lost her favourite crochet hook: My favourite hook is an Addi Swing Crochet Hook, size 3.5mm which I use all the time – it’s an ergonomic hook so it's really comfortable and sits in your hand perfectly, so I was quite annoyed at myself for losing it. The question is – do I just buy another one as a replacement? Do I try a different make, do I buy just one or a set? They're quite expensive individually and even more expensive for a set so these would have to be a Birthday/Christmas gift. I can’t decide what to do, so I’m having a think and will have a mooch around Woolfest or go to Black Sheep Wools. If anyone uses any other good ergonomic hooks and has a favourite - do let me know – it might help me decide. I bought my lost hook from Laughing Hens: https://www.laughinghens.com/knitting-needles/addi-swing-crochet-hooks It's a big Yay Crochet from Fay on her Liala Top by Designer Marie Wallin: I love my top and the way that it looks. It is easy to wear as summer chic or dressed down with jeans or over a dress with tights for some winter colour. The yarn I used has unfortunately been discontinued (Jeanette Sloan 4 ply alpaca/silk) but it was lovely to work with and produced a very soft garment with clear stitch definition.      Link to Jeanette Sloan: http://www.jeanettesloandesign.com/ Link to Marie Wallin: http://www.mariewallin.com/   Fay also sneaked in a Knitting Nay for picot cast off: I've knitted a lovely shawl for a friend which involves a picot edge bind-off which is a new technique for me. It involves knitting lots of stitches before actually casting off, making it a long-winded process. I gave up after about an hour and a half and seemingly getting nowhere, so I will choose a different method to cast off with.      2. Magazine Round-up We've have added Pom Pom Quarterly into our list of magazines because they generally feature a couple of crochet patterns in each issue.  As the title would suggest, it comes out quarterly so you will hear about Pom Pom every third episode.   Inside Crochet – issue 79 - Seaside Theme Website Link: http://www.insidecrochet.co.uk/ Lynne's favourite: Greta Stole designed by Claire Montgomerie using Coopknits Socks Yeah – I really love the colour combination and you could use up your oddments of sock yarn to create your own colour combination (pg 54).   Fay's favourite: Friendship Quilt, designed by Mica York, using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran (pg 80).   There’s also a great interview with Betsan Corkhill, who is a Wellbeing Coach who focusses on the therapeutic benefits of knitting and how it can help improve your health and mindfulness. It’s not just about enjoying knitting and crochet, it links to meditation, to calmness, to stress relieving and to helping you improve your mood by working with calming colours – it’s fascinating and I'd recommend going along to one of Betsan’s workshops if there’s one near you.   Betsan's Website: http://www.stitchlinks.com/ Simply Crochet – issue 46 - Nautical theme Ravelry link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/simply-crochet-issue-46/patterns Website Link: http://www.simplycrochetmag.co.uk/2016/06/23/simply-crochet-issue-46/ Announces a Crochet-A-Long for subscribers, for a blanket using different crochet squares.   Lynne's favourite: I LOVE the cute little Beach Babe Piggy by designer Illaria Caliri – he/she’s so cute and even has a life ring, bucket, spade and beach towel, using DMC Natura Just Cotton (4-ply) (pg 42). Fay's favourite: Claude the Octopus by designer Kate E. Hancock (Fay is slowly being brought round to the fun side of crochet), using Drops Paris 100% cotton (pg 24).   Kat Goldin also talks about her local yarn shop and how it provides a sense of community and a place of creativity (pg 34). Crochet Now - issue 3   Website link: http://www.crochetnow.co.uk/ Lynne's favourite: Amigurumi Guard and Bus designed by Editor Hugh Metcalf.   Fay's favourite: Infinity Cowl designed by Vicki Brown. Love to Knit and Crochet - issue 3 Website Link: https://www.theknittingnetwork.co.uk/ Lynne's favourite: Crochet Stool Cover - Too Cool for Stool (pg 57). Fay's favourite: Feeling Tubby - crochet bowls (pg 56).   3. Our Crochet Journey - Next Steps and issues we've faced Lynne's progress with her Lisa Sweater: I had to rip back a couple of times due to losing stitches - in the end, I gave up ripping out and just added a couple of stitches along the row instead. Now that I'm in the flow of the pattern I've stopped dropping a stitch at the end. It isn't noticeable where I've added the extra stitches. I had to buy 4 extra balls of Rowan Purelife Revive which are a different dye lot than my original 5 balls. Luckily, the yarn is mottled so the slight difference in the shades is not noticeable. I will alternate the balls used but will do the same on each half of the jumper so that any difference will appear as if it's intentional as both halves will be identical. Fingers crossed they will blend nicely or look like gradient yarn.     For those new to crochet or knitting, on the ball band of every ball of yarn is essential information on the yarn itself – what it’s made from, what needle size to use, the tension and the weight. Also, you will find the shade number or reference and (like a tin of paint), the dye lot or dye batch that has been used. Like paint, a different dye lot will potentially produce a slightly different shade, so when buying yarn for a project, you need to make sure that all the ball bands have the same dye lot on them.   I found 2 balls of yellow Rico cotton in The Woolnest to show you how different the dye lots can be and therefore how important it is to use the same batch of yarn – you can see the difference below:     Fay's progress with her Liala Top: I had to rip back due to an error in the pattern, which I didn't realise until I'd ripped it back about 5 times. I also re-jigged the hook size and change the pattern a little to make it into a wearable top because of my body shape. I'm really happy with my crocheted top and will be making more. Full notes of my changes are on my Ravelry project page. Link to Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/MaDashper/liala It's fantastic to see the different garments that people are working on, over on our Ravelry forum.  Helen is motoring on with her Aberfoyle Cardigan and Jo is working on a wrap-around top from issue 41 of Simply Crochet which I love and I'm now making my own version using Rowan Finest.     After seeing Helen's Aberfoyle, Lynne has mooched in The Woolnest and found enough balls of Garthernor Organic 4-ply to make her own. Garthernor produces sustainable, organic yarn in and ecological way. They started out in the 1990s with their own sheep and now buy raw fleeces from other UK farmers, so all their wool is fully traceable and fully certified organic.  At Wonderwool this year Lynne had a lovely chat with the owner and they had some beautifully knitted samples on show and once washed, the yarn is really soft and much softer than it is on the ball.   Link to Aberfoyle Cardigan by Joanne Scrace: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/aberfoyle-cardigan So our next patterns are Aberfoyle and Simple Wrapover.  We have been inspired by the folk in the Crochet Circle podcast to make the same items that they are making - so thank you. Feel free to join in with our Stylish Crochet CAL and don't forget to wear your garment at Yarndale.   Link to our Stylish Crochet Ravelry forum: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/the-crochet-circle-podcast/3438284/26-50#31     4. Woolfest We're off to Woolfest in the morning.  Whilst we are there, Tamara, one of the listeners to the podcast will be at a yarn festival in Houston, Texas.  Tamara lives over there now but we've noticed that lots of people seem to be travelling much further afield to go to yarn festivals.  At Edinburgh yarn festival, people had come from all over Europe. TNNA (The National Needle Arts Association) was on in America a couple of weeks ago and lots of folks were there from the UK.   So, given that Tamara is going to be at a yarn festival at the same time as we are we thought we would share notes.  We have the same set of questions to answer and photos will be taken from both sides of the pond and added to the Pinterest board for Episode 5.      5. World Knit in Public Day This was held on Saturday 18th June. Link: http://www.wwkipday.com/find-a-kip/kips-in-europe/  Fay experienced the East London Yarn Triangle, Hackney made up of 3 shops - Fabrications, Wild and Woolly and Knit With Attitude. They offered 10% off if you posted 3 photos with their hashtag on Instagram, and they also had refreshments. The yarn shops are within walking distance and maps were provided which highlighted the photo locations and I bought lots of wool and concluded that you can indeed crochet on a swing.   http://eastlondonyarntriangle.com/   6. Finished Objects Fay: Liala top by Marie Wallin, Cowl for The Crochet Circle book using Erika Knight British Blue and Shawl for the book using Whistlebare's Yeavering Bell (Mohair/Wensleydale blend). http://www.whistlebare.co.uk/ Fay also has an answer on whether a sock from an unfinished pair is an FO or a WIP.  It’s a HO (half object). Lynne's FO's are mainly secret commissions but she finished her Cowl for The Crochet Circle book, using Baa Baa Brighouse yarn called Baa Baa Brew. https://www.baabaabrighouse.co.uk/     7. WIP Wall Fay: I'm currently at 8 and many are the same as last time.  A new one on the list is the Wrapover Shawl from Simply Crochet issue 41, and I don’t have much to report yet other than I have done a yarn and hook substitute to change the finished fabric a little. Lynne: I’m at 11 – I frogged a pair of socks as the yarn wasn’t showing off the lace pattern properly, in fact it was barely visible. I finished the secret project for our book and I haven’t really started the Studio Linen Shawl so it doesn’t really count. With my Lisa Sweater I'm back up to 12 and my next book project will take me up to 13 WIPs.   8. Feeding the Rabbit (aka feeding the habit) Fay's purchases: I bought quite a lot of yarn during my visit to London on World Knit in Public Day, including: From Fabrications - Recycled Fibre (in lovely creams, whites and denim blue from UK); 100% Bluefaced Leicester Roving yarn (brown) and 100% Bluefaced Leicester Roving yarn (cream), both from West Yorkshire Spinners, suitable for hand-dying and felting. From Wild and Woolly - Rowan felted tweed and Erika Knight British Blue Wool from the Stash Depot (buying another person’s stash); Kalinka linen from Sweden in colour cyan  (Fibre: 100% linen Yardage: 320m per 100g skein Gauge: 28 stitches per 10 cm, recommended needle size: 3-4 mm needles) From Knit with Attitude - Hedgehog Fibres in colourway Dragonfly  (DK weight yarn, 100% merino wool, superwash. 115g/200m); Socks Yeah! – in colourway 110 Malachite -(75% superwash merino, 25% nylon, 50g/212m/231 yds). Mirasol – Kingfisher 14 (4-ply, 60% merino wool, 20% Alpaca, 20% Silk, 250m/274yds, 50g). http://www.wildandwoollyshop.co.uk/ http://www.fabrications1.co.uk/ http://knitwithattitude.com/shop/ I also sneaked a visit to Ewe and Ply in Shrewsbury - and still resisted the spinning wheel. Ewe and Ply have a great selection of British wools and is well worth a visit. I bought some Eden Cottage yarn, and one of the natural roving yarns from West Yorkshire Spinners. Link to Ewe and Ply, Shrewsbury: http://www.eweandply.co.uk/   Lynne's purchases: I bought a gorgeous skein of yarn from I Knit (London) – I had a spare few hours a couple of weeks ago when in London, so I jumped on the tube to Waterloo and found the shop quite easily. I’ve wanted the yarn ever since seeing it - mainly because it’s called Starman – one of my favourite songs by my favourite artist, David Bowie, so I just had to buy it. I’m going to try my crochet cowl from the book and see how it works with the hand-dyed yarn.     Link to I Knit London: http://iknit.org.uk/   9. What’s Good                For Lynne: About a year ago I was commissioned by Search Press to write a book for their "20 To Make" series. I had great fun designing the Mandalas for the book and have also designed a few more for commissions. I’m definitely hooked by Mandalas – they’re meditative and you can make them your own by using your favourite colours and favourite yarns. They’re useful for all sorts of things, like placemats, wall hangings and you can even sew them together to make a throw. The Search Press book is out in October and you can pre-order it on Amazon at the moment. It came out of the blue and it was because of Erika Knight and Emma Knitted!   Link to Stash Tags KNIT IT - HOOK IT - CRAFT IT: https://www.knitit-hookit-craftit.com/products/stash-tag Knitting magazine: https://www.thegmcgroup.com/pc/viewPrd.asp?idProduct=2327&idCategory=717 Erika Knight: http://www.erikaknight.co.uk/ Emma Knitted: http://www.emmaknitted.co.uk/         Secondly, we were sent Daughter of a Shepherd mini-skeins by Rachel Atkinson to test for crochet. We love how they smell and can't wait to try them out. Rachel is manufacturing Hebridean wool from sheep her father breeds in the UK. Link to Daughter of a Shepherd: https://daughterofashepherd.com/ As we both smelled the sheepiness of the yarn we realised that we were both sporting Hebridean moustaches. Other things we've mentioned: Winners Round-up - Who's won what so far: 200g DMC Natura Medium and DMC hook – Kerryd19 from Australia Arne & Carlos Sock yarn (with signed Stash Tag)  - Curlylou – UK Lynne Rowe's Once Upon a Time in Crochet (signed copy) - JojoTwinkletoes Erika Knight’s Simple Colour Knitting (signed copy) – DianeB 2 x 50g Erika Knight’s Studio Linen – Emma from Woolgathering Sandbach   Happy listening and crocheting.   Lynne and Fay x   Instagram: Crochet_Circle_Podcast  Instagram: provenance.craft.co   Instagram: FayDHDesigns YouTube: The Crochet Circle Podcast Crochet Clan on Mighty Network: Invite
