This episode covers the next part of chapter 16: “Men, one by one, escape from creation's prison...” to “…those that attain a liberating knowledge of the One Father.” Summary: We are forced to undertake a deep dive into the spiritual texts and philosophies mentioned in this section of the chapter, including the concept of Yugas, the importance of focusing orientation of the eyes during meditation, and the teachings of Jesus and Indian saints. They also explored the concept of atheism and its relation to spiritual growth, and the significance of divine ideals in achieving liberation, as taught by Paramahansa Yogananda and Sri Yukteswar. 0:00 Prior episode; 1:50 Reading world scripture 13:55 Variegated practices 28:55 Meditate to Know 45:33 Yogi-Christs 57:58 Looking ahead.: Homework for next episode— Read, absorb and make notes on the next part of chapter 16: “The Adam and Eve story is incomprehensible to me...” to “…produced through an act of special creation by God.” #autobiographyofayogi #autobiographylinebyline #paramahansayogananda Autobiography of a Yogi awake.minute Self-Realization Fellowship Yogoda Satsanga Society of India #SRF #YSS

#YomKippur, aka #TheDayofAtonement2023, is upon us. In this installment of TMTO, we explore various paradigms and meanings that are popularly attached to this holiest day of God's calendar year.
We're nearing our 150th episode mark and for us, that has meant a lot of plants discussed. But it's also meant a lot of great guest appearances. As you know, each episode we ask an expert from the field of horticulture to lend us their brains and weigh-in on some great plant choices for the topic at hand. We've had guests who made us laugh, think twice about a much-maligned perennial, or even come to realize that there are far better options out there for our gardens. Who was our funniest guest? The one that made us seriously reconsider our planting choices? Or the one who made us grip the steering wheel with white knuckles (yes—that did actually happen)? Tune in now to find out and listen to our favorite guest segments. Featured guests: · Riz Reyes, a horticulturist and floral designer based in Seattle. · Richard Hawke is the director of ornamental plant research at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. · Irvin Etienne is curator of herbaceous plants and seasonal garden design for The Garden at Newfields in Indianapolis. · Sabrena Schweyer and her husband, Samuel Salsbury, own and manage Salsbury-Schweyer Inc., a sustainable landscape design and development group based in Akron, Ohio. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Role models play an important part in all of our lives, whether we seek them out or not. And whether we walk the Buddhist Path or not, they can have the power to shape the direction we take and the ability to influence the decisions that follow on from there. For Buddhist practitioners, the Buddha is our most eminent role model, teacher and the Perfectly Enlightened One. And there are also many noble and great disciples of the Buddha. In this session we delve into the story of Venerable Kumārakassapa Thera, who was born to a young bhikkhuni. After being brought up under the care of King Pasenadī of Kosala, he took novice ordination at seven years old. Later on, after taking full ordination, he was given a riddle from a non-returner deity from the Pure Abodes and asked the Buddha to explain its meaning and instruction on how to contemplate it (Vammika Sutta, MN 23). He subsequently realised the fruit of arahantship by contemplating it and penetrating the Dhamma. We will study the Vammika Sutta (MN 23) in an upcoming Dhamma session. Some of the suttas referred to in this Dhamma talk: — Mahākhandhaka (Kd 1) — Etadaggavagga (AN 1.217) — Vammika Sutta (MN 23) — Pāyāsi Sutta (DN 23) — Nigrodhamigajātaka (Ja 12) — Kumārakassapattheraapadāna (Tha Ap 537) — Kumārakassapattheragāthā (Thag 2.41) — (Uttara) Pāyāsivimānavatthu (Vv 74 or Vv 6.1) — Kumārakassapamātuttherivatthu (Dhp 160) In learning about such noble beings, we can delight in their lives and accomplishments; recognise the importance of seeing them as worthy role models; and use it as inspiration towards progress on the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path. Nearly everyone can grow tropical plants outdoors during the summer months, but when the first frosts are forecasted gardeners in colder climates know there will be some tough decisions ahead. Which plants will be moved to those coveted spots by a south-facing window for winter? Is it worth the trouble to dig dahlia tubers and overwinter them, or should you just start over from scratch with newer, prettier varieties next year? Should you (once again) convince your significant other to don oven mitts, help you relocate your cherished collection of agaves indoors, and cohabitate with those dangerously spiky beauties until spring? OK, that last question might only be on Danielle's mind, but tune in to this episode to learn about the many ways our hosts have found to get their favorite tender plants through the coldest months, and why it is worth the effort. Expert testimony: Chloë Bowers is a professional gardener and landscape designer based in Newtown, Connecticut. Danielle's Plants ‘Escargot' rex begonia (Begonia ‘Escargot', Zones 10-11) ‘Cream Spike' agave (Agave 'Cream Spike', Zones 8-11) 'Snow Leopard' mangave (Mangave 'Snow Leopard', Zones 8-11) Red Abyssinian banana (Ensete maurelii, Zones 8-10) Carol's Plants ‘Oxford Blue' gentian sage (Salvia patens ‘Oxford Blue', Zones 8-10) Variegated peperomia (Peperomia obtusifolia ‘Variegata', Zones 10-11) ‘Doodlebug' dahlia (Dahlia ‘Doodlebug', Zones 8-11) ‘Coffee Cups' elephant's ear (Colocasia esculenta 'Coffee cups', Zones 8-11) Expert's Plants West Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus, Zones 9-13) Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus, Zones 7-10) Malabar spinach (Basella alba, Zones 9b-11) Mexican sour gherkin (Melothria scabra, Zones 9-11)

Plants with Variegated Leaves
Shade, generally speaking, can be dark, dreary and difficult to garden in. It’s hard enough finding a plant that requires not all that much sunlight, let alone one that has light coloring to its foliage. But these rare birds are essential to making a good shade garden truly great. Plants with white, silver, or even light green variegation brighten up the dimmest of spots and instantly get elevated to focal point status. Have you always thought your shade was lacking something? Chances are, it’s some variegation and this episode has plenty of options to pick from. Expert testimony: Susan Calhoun, owner of Plantswoman Design in Bainbridge, Washington.

Twain wrote: “The Lie, as a recreation, a solace, a refuge in time of need, the fourth Grace, the tenth Muse, man's best and surest friend, is immortal, and cannot perish from the earth.” We examine this immortality of the Lie and its bete noire, the Truth, in today’s episode. The legend of Ashwathama, the contribution of Dharmvir Bharti to our intellectual landscape, the unreliable narrator of Andhadhun, the straight-as-an-arrow Dharmendra in Satyakam and the lies in the fiction of Premchand and RK Narayan – we look for the role of deception and honesty in all of them. Is truth distinct or is it amorphous? Is it always a contested notion? What do we make of fake news in our culture? We cover them all in our ramble. In spotlight we feature an artist whose masterly frames adorned some of the greatest moments in Hindi cinema. Someone who blended a finely honed aesthetic sensibility with strong technical expertise that made him the first ‘technician’ to be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award. We end the show with our weekly reading, watching, and listening recommendations. Ever noticed that plants with variegated foliage tend to grow slower and lower? There's a botanical reason why and Nathan explains why it's all based upon plant pigmentation. Also, it's important to know how your plants are built and grow. Nathan explains the in's and out's of the plant vascular system, including their xylem and phloem. !!! OK, today we welcome one of our very favorites, Jane Perrone of On The Ledge podcast! She shares where her houseplant journey began, some of her current favorites, and even a few plants she would NOT grow-- and the Plant Daddies take sides! After our interview, we continue to dish on plants that we "do not prefer." Fans of variegation, shield your ears!

Variegated is an adjective that means exhibiting different colors. The Latin word varius (VAR ee oos) means various, and it’s given birth to many words like variety, varied, and of course, variegated. The term is frequently used by botanists to describe leaves that contain multiple colors, but there’s a wide variety of ways our word of the day may be used. If you ask me, Troy’s car looks a little tacky. The variegated hub caps are a bit much.
The Ewes talk knitting and then have a discussion of dyeing techniques in answer to a listener question. A little Enzo and a little bee news round out the episode. Kelly tells about her natural dyeing experiments and Marsha found two dyeing classes on Craftsy (now Bluprint) that she thinks she may try. Both are taught by Sarah Eyre. Professional Yarn Dyeing at Home: dyeing solids, semi-solids speckled, and variegated. Discusses yarns, dyes, mordants, safety, gear and studio set up. Next Steps in Dyeing: gradients, sock blanks, self-striping, hand-painted, dyeing fibers. Alan Yip, Masters in Horticulture and Biodiversity, joins today for a discussion on houseplants. Alan is an expert on orchids, and we will do an upcoming episode specifically on those. Here we talk about all things houseplants, focusing on ones which are easy to grow, tips for making them thrive, and common problems and solutions. We also dive into which houseplants are the popular ones currently. We’ve gone retro, because 1970’s houseplants are in! Popular plants discussed include Monstera and Ficus lyrata (aka Fiddle Leaf Fig). To ask questions for future shows, submit them at Flower Power Garden Hour Facebook page, The Plant Lady Facebook page, or Instagram. You can also email Marlene questions, future show topic requests and feedback at msimon@marlenesimon.net
