Half the time they ignore you, sometimes they lie to you, and they love to find plenty of reasons to do the exact opposite of what you asked! As they gain independence, teens just don't want to abide by your rules...even if they're living in your house.Plus, as much as we want kids to listen to us and take us seriously as authority figures...gosh dang it, we want them to like us! We know that it's important to give kids restrictions and limits, but it's hard to see why when they're slamming the door and screaming at us for taking their XBox away. To be a parent is to constantly walk that fine line between being close to your kid and knowing when it's time to be tough….and it can be really hard!Luckily, William Stixrud and Ned Johnson are back to give us more great advice on finding that parenting balance. They were last on the show to discuss their bestseller, The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives. Today, they're here to share some groundbreaking material from their brand new book, What Do You Say? How to Talk with Kids to Build Motivation, Stress Tolerance and a Happy Home. Although they're big believers in giving kids autonomy, Bill and Ned know that parents still have an irreplaceable role in guiding kids through the perils of adolescence. That's why we're discussing how parents can best respond to a child who comes to them with a crisis. Plus, we're debating the idea that kids should always “try their best” and revealing how you can start equipping kids with the independence they need to survive college and beyond.Click for full show notes, exercises, and parenting scripts from this episode

This week begins with a lot of talk about reality TV. Matt tells us what annoys him about The Bachelor franchise, and Tyler explains Big Brother. After a brief chat about theme parks, Tyler talks about all of the mystery videos he’s been watching on YouTube. The accidental main topic this week is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Your hosts haven’t discussed it in a while, but unfortunately, it’s relevant again. “I just can't handle you right now.” That's how I'm feeling around my kids lately. As many of you know, I've been on a pretty epic family road trip across the country. We've been making some incredible memories and having a ton of fun, but it hasn't been without some serious challenges. My wife has been sick for the past week, the boys are constantly fighting, I'm trying to manage my business (while keeping everyone engaged), and there've been some tragic events with my extended family, to name just a few. To be honest, I feel like I'm reaching my breaking point. I've lost all patience, I'm emotionally drained, and I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with my kids immediate needs. And I can feel the negative impact that my energy is having on my kids—which doesn't sit right with me. I don't want to be the Dad who replies to my kids with the classic “Because I said so…” line. Well, the timing for today's episode of the podcast couldn't be better. Returning guests, Ned Johnson and William Stixrud, join the show to talk all about their new book, What Do You Say?: How to Talk with Kids to Build Motivation, Stress Tolerance, and a Happy Home. Ned and Bill reminded me that nobody gets it right all the time. In fact, perfect parenting just doesn't exist, and my current feelings are completely normal. Thankfully, they shared some pro tips for practicing self-compassion and dealing with the kids when life gets crazy—ones that I know you'll appreciate! If you sometimes find it hard to talk with our kids, you're going to love this conversation. Ned and Bill share some really powerful strategies for creating deeper connections, building empathy, and engaging in respectful and effective dialogue. This is your comprehensive guide to effectively communicating with kids! Ned Johnson Podcast Highlights How to talk to kids (and really listen) in order to build powerful connections. Changing the energy in the way you talk to your children. Letting your kids know when you're having a tough day/week. How to practice non-judgmental self-compassion. Why nobody needs perfect parents. In fact, ‘good enough' is better than you may think. The power of spending one-on-one time with your kids. Talking with kids about the pursuit of happiness. Using reflective listening to build empathy with your kids. Helping kids find their own motivation. How does a kid's age impact how you speak to them? Why you should want your kids to solve their own problems as much as possible. Are you accidentally bailing on your kids emotionally? This week host Amy Parker and Mike Nawrocki talk with Author Lexi Young Pack about her new book What Do You Say to a Dragon, a whimsical book that empowers children to express their emotions and use their imaginations to change the power dynamic of anxiety while also giving parents a healthy approach to helping their kids face fears. Lexi Peck is one of six children and the daughter of William Paul Young, author of The Shack. She was raised and still resides in the Pacific Northwest on a farm raising cattle with her husband, Josh, and their two children, Vivian and Xander. She graduated summa cum laude from Portland State University with a BA in psychology, centering her studies on childhood development. Her passion to deeply understand how children develop and thrive in the world became a driving focus. Lexi became a children's author with the intention of passing on her insight to those who are hoping to engage parenting to the fullest. Lexi's first children's book, What Do You Say to a Dragon?, was born out of a real-life situation with her daughter, Vivian, waking from a recurring nightmare.

This week is another interview episode ahead of the Christmas period. In this episode, the very lovely jill Fanslau has joined us to talk about email marketing. As the owner of aWeber, Jill has lots of experience when it comes to email, putting her in the perfect place to give you all of tips you need to succeed. We talk about how you should collect emails, how you should collect them and what you should be sending your list once you’ve started building it. If you want to start building or growing on your email list, this is definitely the episode for you. Key Takeaways Covered in the Podcast · You don’t own your social media accounts but you do own your email lists. If Instagram or Twitter were to go down in the next week, where would that leave your business? You need to be smart about how your channels work alongside one another and drive your social media followers to your email list. · If you’re struggling to see results with your email list, you need to ensure you’re cleansing and segmenting it. If you need to, let people CHOOSE what list they’re on. Ask them what they want to see. · Although building your list is important, you need to be sure you’re actually emailing them. If you haven’t emailed them in a long time, be honest. · Don’t be afraid to talk to your email list. You don’t have to only email when you’re selling. You have to be able to provide and bring something to the table without asking something in return. · Humans crave stories so if you can weave those into your email, people will connect with you on a personal level. · When you’re onboarding new emails, you should use a seven-email strategy. The first email should be a welcome email that should arrive instantly. Introduce yourself and let them know what they can expect from you. Afterwards, you should follow up with a story email as it starts off the likability process. If you don’t want to write a story, shoot a video. · Your third email should provide more value. Next, you should send and agitation email that hits their pain point. Although it will make them squirm, you want to remind them of the reason they signed up to your email list. This should go out right before you pitch someone a product or solution. · Some people may need a little bit of help making a decision, so this is where you will need to send a proof email. Whether it’s a testimonial, a case study or a review – people will experience intense FOMO if they’re missing out. Once you have sent a proof email, you need to send an ask email. · The seven-email strategy can take one month, two months or six months. · The best way to determine how long your emails should be is to test. It doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing, it matters what your audience want. · Think about whether or not people will be opening your emails on their mobile, rather than their desktop. · Link shorterners can cause your emails to end up in spam. About our Guest Sarita Maybin is an international speaker and communications expert. She has worked with clients like Hewlett Packard, Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles County, Department of Navy and the Las Vegas Convention Center and has spoken all over the world. In 2012 she was voted Top 5 Communication Speaker and has had the privilege of speaking on the TEDx stage. She’s also the author of If You Can’t Say Something Nice, What DO You Say? and an expert in confronting tough communication situations in a positive and fun way. Episode Summary: Today, we continue the Powerful Women Series in honor of Women's History Month. Our focus today is on the people pillar and how we communicate. We tackle the complex topic of speaking up when it might not be comfortable and talk about the importance of finding a middle ground to say what needs to be said before things blow up. We discuss how to ask for what we want using the right language. This includes giving the other party a vote by using collaborative phrases and the power of positive communication phrases. This episode is full of practical tactics for both personal and professional communication. CLIFF NOTES It’s important to speak up and say what needs to be said. Use phrases like, “I would appreciate” to make requests not demands. We need to just ask for what we want. Use a phrase like, “would you be willing to?” Use collaborative phrases at home. When giving feedback focus on the positive rather than the negative and use positive communication phrases like, “help me understand.” 3 Clues that you should pick up the phone instead of email or text. Sensitive subject, conflict, or when there’s a back and forth. Instead of a spellcheck do a “please and thank you check.” The 3Ps by Dr. Martin Sullivan: Don't take things PERSONALLY. It's not PERMANENT. Don't let it ruin the big PICTURE. We can use “if”, "as soon as" and "when" to set boundaries.
