Felix James, co-founder and head brewer at Small Beer, takes us through his brewing journey from childhood experiments to pioneering the world's first brewery dedicated to beers under 2.8%. His passion for biology and fermentation forms the foundation of a revolutionary approach to creating full-flavoured beer with less alcohol.• Started brewing at age 4 with a home experiment using a milk bottle and bread yeast• Biology degree led to professional brewing, beginning at Budweiser where he learned rigorous quality standards• Met business partner James Grundy at Sipsmith, gaining crucial business experience beyond brewing operations• Spent over 18 months developing recipes before launching Small Beer• Designed custom brewing equipment focused on extracting maximum flavour rather than alcohol• Created the brewing system from scratch, taking personal risk when manufacturers initially questioned the design• Pioneered the "mid-strength" beer category in the UK market• Developed the concept of "coasting" as an alternative to alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks• Small Beer sits below the diuretic limit, reducing dehydration and hangover potential• Available in Waitrose, Ocado, Majestic Wines, and launching in M&S from June 18thSupport the show

Olivia Ferdi is obsessed with the details.  The co-founder of Trip, a U.K.-based brand of lightly sparkling functional beverages intended to help people relax, Olivia says that a passion for the particulars is a key reason why Trip is the fastest-growing soft drink brand in the U.K. and currently preparing for a major expansion of its retail presence in the American market. Trip debuted in 2019 and markets two product lines: one infused with CBD and adaptogens and the other, called Mindful Blend, is made with Lion's Mane, ashwagandha, L-theanine and magnesium. The brand is sold in over 30,000 points of distribution across Europe and the U.S and its Mindful Blend line will be available nationally at three yet-to-be-announced retail chains beginning in the first quarter of 2025. In this episode, Olivia discusses how Trip's philosophy of “product obsession” helped gave the company a fast start and keeps it building towards a more promising future. She also explains why “the customer is sacrosanct,” how the company is applying lessons from success in e-commerce to its brick and mortar business and why humility is key to its U.S. expansion. Show notes: 0:35: Olivia Ferdi, Co-Founder, Trip – Olivia and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif chat about the industry meetup hosted the evening prior to their conversation, before the entrepreneur talks about Trip's sponsorship of a Dua Lipa surprise concert in London later in the day. She also discusses Trip's partnership with the Calm app, why she and Daniel never intended to build Trip as a U.K. brand, and how their personal experience with CBD became a “blind passion” to create a brand as a way to give people access to the ingredient. Olivia also explains how Trip's “customer first” strategy has set it apart, how its well-crafted label design allowed the company to avoid using paid media early on, how she's attempting to avoid pitfalls in the U.S. and the one word that can help Trip become a household name. We're back with the Lush Life podcast, and I am thrilled to be here to tell you that the original London Dry Gin, way back when, was pink!  I didn't believe it either until our guests presented me with a taste. Sponsored by Sipsmith, I welcomed Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown to join me at the launch of the first Lush Life Book Club at Oriole Bar in London to discuss their new book, The Distiller of London.  Jared Brown is the co-founder and master distiller of Sipsmith, as well as a multi-award-winning drink historian. Anistatia Miller is a multi-award-winning drink historian with 35 years in the publishing industry.   Written in code in 1638, The Distiller of London protected the distilling craft's 'mysteries' practiced by the Worshipful Company of Distillers. Anistatia and Jared have deciphered these recipes and offer the modern-day reader a glimpse of distilling's evolution as it transformed from medicine to social beverage.  Hope you enjoy our in-real-life chat of the origins of gin, original gin, and so much more. Our cocktail of the week is Archive Highball. Welcome back! I missed you. How did the summer fly away so quickly? Here we are in the middle of September already, but there is so much fun on the horizon. I'm Susan Schwartz, your drinking companion, and this is Lush Life Podcast, where every week we are inspired to live life one cocktail at a time. The most exciting news of the year so far is that I will be live at Oriole, one of the best bars in the world, to launch Lush Life Book Club.  Every week during London Cocktail Week, which is actually the entire month of October, we'll be deep-diving into a famous cocktail book and meeting its author or authors for an evening of cocktail history, cocktail recipes, and, most importantly, cocktail drinking. Tuesday, October 5. Jared Brown & Anistatia Miller will join me to discuss The Distiller of London, sponsored by Sipsmith. If there is no distillation, there is no spirit; if there is no spirit, there is no cocktail.  Jared is the co-founder and master distiller of Sipsmith, as well as a multi-award-winning drink historian. Cocktails are at the heart of every James Bond novel, and I am thrilled to be joined by Mia and Bobby of the award-winning London bar, Swift and Edmund, and their business partner and owner of Oriole, to explore more than just the Vodka Martini, shaken, not stirred.  Then on Tuesday, October 19 – Olivia Williams, author of Gin Glorious Gin and The Secret Life of the Savoy, is my guest thanks to Bulleit and Kentucky Tourism. The recipe for any cocktail at the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London includes a healthy dose of history. Olivia invites us to check into London's most iconic hotel, where she'll guide us through its vibrant history while we sip its most inventive classic cocktails. And if that weren't enough, on Tuesday, October 26, I will be with Jason Clark, author of The Art and Craft of Coffee Cocktails, and Pippa Guy, Let's Get Fizzical, sponsored by Tanqueray. Acting as Brand Ambassador for an iconic spirit is a full-time job. Adding another full-time job on top of that is almost impossible. Our two guests have done just that by creating and writing two esteemed cocktail books.  We'll discuss what it takes to venture out and write your own cocktail book.  So that's what's on tap for London Cocktail Week.  Beginning in a few weeks, the Lush Life Podcast will be coming straight to your ears, plus you can always catch up on everything athttp://alushlifemanual.com/ ( alushlifemanual.com). This uniquely crafted 80 proof whiskey consists of an entirely new mash bill. In lieu of traditional rye grain, Basil Hayden Toast is made using US-grown brown rice, which adds a hint of sweetness and a touch less spice with increased depth of flavor that comes from secondary aging in a toasted then flash-charred oak barrel. Rather than charring the barrel with open flame, the toasting process exposes the barrel to a long and gentle heat. The softer notes from the Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey receive the flavors from the toasted barrels, which is then blended back with non-Toasted bourbon to add complex flavor grounded in sweet vanilla, complemented by rich roasted notes – ideal to be sipped and savored neat, on the rocks, or stirred into your favorite aperitif-style cocktail with close company. This week on Conversations of Inspiration, Holly made the short journey down the road to the beautiful Sipsmith distillery in Chiswick, to meet Sipsmith founders Sam Galsworthy and Fairfax Hall. This is a story that shows the beauty and power of building a company with a close friend, with a shared vision and passion. Sipsmith's story is a special one - in an industry that has not seen a new independent gin distillery opened in over 200 years, Sipsmith single-handedly changed the entire industry, simultaneously bringing  with it a connection to the traditions of the gin industry, whilst also bringing the fun that its founders embody so completely. They discuss their startup journey to success, the decision to sell their business after 10 years and their formative years that laid the foundations for building the Sipsmith empire. Sam and Fairfax share incredibly heartfelt and emotional letters at the end of this conversation, they are not to be missed. This week:  Sales Force  Pattern 89 Facebook Lost 15 Million Users, What Now?  The social media landscape seems to have leveled off over the last few years with no major changes to its user base to trouble ourselves with. That is, until now. According to Edison Research’s 2019 Infinite Dial Report, Facebook’s user base declined by a staggering 15 million since 2017.  Tom Webster, the Senior Vice President at Edison Research, put the numbers in perspective when he compared Facebook’s usage decline to the population of Pennsylvania & New Mexico combined. The results from this comprehensive and highly-regarded survey follow a similar pattern as last year, which saw a Facebook usage decline of eight percent in 2018.  Is this the end of the road for Facebook? Why, after so many years of growth and prosperity, has Facebook seen such a drastic reduction in usage in the United States? Tune in to hear from Tom Webster, the man with his finger on the pulse of what’s happening on social media and who can tell us once and for all if it’s time to finally abandon Facebook as a social media tactic.  In This Episode:  07:10 – What the findings from this year’s Infinite Dial Report means for the future of Facebook   14:46 – Why Pinterest is a great platform for ad targeting   16:31 – An insight into the questions that Edison Research receives from major social networks  19:46 – Why you shouldn’t underestimate the power of LinkedIn as a social platform  22:10 – How smartphone and tablet usage has impacted screen real estate   29:49 – Why the popularity and usage of speaker technology will continue to evolve  Resources:  Get the new State of Marketing report for free from Salesforce here.  Find out more about the community at SocialMedia.org with a special form for Social Pros listeners here.  Get your 14-day free trial with Pattern89 here.   Learn more about Tom’s work by visiting his website.  Find out more about Edison Research here.  Check out The Infinite Dial 2019 Report here.  Download The Podcast Consumer 2019 Report here.  Read “Youtility: Why Smart Marketing Is about Help Not Hype” by Jay Baer here.  Read “The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds” by Michael Lewis here.  Try Tom’s recommended Sipsmith gin, “V.J.O.P.”   Visit SocialPros.com for more insights from your favorite social media marketers.

We have a great combination in the studio today, and we aren't talking Holly and Ollie, we're talking Gin and Charcuterie! We're joined by Shaun Cannon of Cannon and Cannon and Talula White of Sekforde Drinks. British charcuterie was a bit of an oddity when Shaun started out. The general perception was that you couldn't possibly make charcuterie in the UK because the weather conditions "weren't right". Well, just like British cheese, we now have a burgeoning charcuterie industry and according to Shaun we're rather good at it. He takes Sue and the team through a tasting feast of extraordinary British bresaola, air dried hams and chorizos. All from animals that are free range and ethically reared. Eating all this charcuterie made Sue extremely thirsty, so thank goodness Talula was in the studio. If you're overwhelmed by the range of weird mixers that now populate the supermarket shelves and can't work out the perfect combination to go with your Sipsmith, Talula has solved the problem. Sekforde make the perfect mixers to go with a range of spirits and she's enlisted the help of Sharon to make some gin combinations to prove it.

What is the difference between gin and flavoured vodka? That should be an easy question to answer. But some of the drinks industry's older heads have voiced concern that gin without juniper berries, or lacking in juniper character, is on the rise.Among them is Hayman's Gin, which recently launched the Call Time On Fake Gin campaign.Says the distiller: "Recently we have started to see some producers marketing gins that have little or no evident connection to juniper. While botanical innovation and experimentation has long been linked to gin’s success, we believe that a small number of producers are today creating spirits that have strayed too far from what makes gin 'gin'."Sipsmith Gin co-founder Fairfax Hall is another distiller who has taken up the fight against gin without juniper.Drinks Adventures caught up with Fairfax for a chat about all things gin in Sydney earlier this year. All other Drinks Adventures episodes, show notes, transcripts and many helpful links are available on the podcast website, DrinksAdventures.com.au, and you can email me at hello@drinksadventures.com.au.Follow James Atkinson on Facebook here, Instagram here and Twitter here.Theme music ‘Sandbox’ by Cameo Culture. Sam Galsworthy is co-founder of Sipsmith, producers of classic London dry gin. In order to do so, though, he and he co-founder Fairfax first had to change a 200-year-old law. They did reverse it, and therefore gave life to the beverage landscape in the UK. In this episode, Sam and I talk about what’s behind making things by hand/small batch, how Sipsmith changed the gin game -- a 'ginaissance,' as he calls it -- the different phases of entrepreneurialism, and not riding the trends, but rather sailing through them. I love Sam's formula for a successful entrepreneur: perseverance + determination + passion. "What entrepreneurship takes is grit," he says.
