"The Man of Stone" is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft and Hazel Heald. Published in the October 1932 issue of Wonder Stories, it tells of two friends who go in search of several peculiarly life-like stone statues in the remote Adirondack Mountains of New York.
In the city of strange wonders, the lure of the flame drew them on and on… destruction loomed ahead… The City of Singing Flame by Clark Ashton Smith, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Today marks the debut of Clark Ashton Smith on our podcast. Smith was born in California in 1893. He was an insatiable reader with a photographic memory. He read an unabridged dictionary word for word, studying the definitions of the words and their origins. He read the complete 11th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica at least twice. He started writing at 11. By 14 he had written a short adventure novel titled The Black Diamonds which was lost for decades until was published in 2002 more than 41 years after his death.Smith was poor most of his life and often did manual labor jobs like fruit picking and woodcutting to provide for himself and his parents. To say he was a prolific writer of horror and science fiction would be a huge understatement. Between 1929 and 1934 he wrote more than a hundred short stories. He began corresponding with Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft and the three of them became friends although they never met.Clark Ashton Smith was praised by his peers, H. P. Lovecraft said, “in sheer daemonic strangeness and fertility of conception, Clark Ashton Smith is perhaps unexcelled” and Ray Bradbury said that Smith, “filled my mind with incredible worlds, impossibly beautiful cities, and still more fantastic creatures”. You are about to discover what Lovecraft and Bradbury were talking about.Turn back the clock 93 years and go to page 202 in Wonder Stories magazine, July 1931, The City of Singing Flame by Clark Ashton Smith…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, It lay silent and dead under the cold desert moon, but what strange race inhabited the abyss beneath those cyclopean ruin? In 1970 Avon Books published a landmark anthology “Science Fiction Hall of Fame” featuring 16 classic short stories that represent landmark tales of the genre. The stories were voted on by the members of the new (at the time in the late 60s) organization Science Fiction Writers of America. In this series, I will be joined by a panel of different guests to break down these stories and talk about the authors in the book. In this episode, I am joined by two returning guests. First up is the Hugo award-winning fan writer Cora Buhlert who knows her Science Fiction. Steve Davison is the current owner and publisher of one of the longest-running Science Fiction magazines Amazing Stories. Because this is the first episode we talk a lot about the make-up of the book and the process editor Robert Silverberg used to put the book together. The story we are covering is the 1934 classic “A Martian Odessey by Stanley G. Weinbaum. This story is considered a game-changer that changed Science Fiction forever.
Achieving immortality is only half of the problem. The other half is knowing how to live with it once it's been made possible—and inescapable!. Second Childhood by Clifford D. Simak, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.Clifford D. Simak worked as a newspaperman for most of his life and only became a full-time science fiction author after his retirement. However, what he accomplished part time was more than most. He won 3 Hugo Awards and a Nebula and The Science Fiction Writers of America made him its third Grand Master. Simak was born in Millville, Wisconsin in 1904. He was a public school teacher until leaving to work at the Minneapolis Star and Tribune until he retired at 72. He became interested in sci-fi after reading H. G. Wells. His first short story, “The World of the Red Sun” appeared in the December 1931 issue of Wonder Stories magazine. He would go on to write more than 120 short stories. Let's turn to the pages of Galaxy Science Fiction in February 1951. We'll find our story on page 81, Second Childhood by Clifford D. "Seedling of Mars", which explores the idea of Martian canals being much more than mere waterways, was first published as THE PLANET ENTITY in the Fall 1931 edition of Wonder Stories Quarterly. The story was the result of an Interplanetary Plot Contest, in which readers of Wonder Stories were invited to outline plots for established authors to develop.

Looking up in the night sky and identifying the constellations, or seeing the Space Station zoom overhead, or sometimes spotting other celestial beings is always fun, for me at least. One of the easier constellations to recognize is Orion. He's starting to make an appearance again in the early night sky so I figured, why not do a story about him? Saturn and Jupiter are supposed to be so close together in the sky, that they look like a double planet. I think I have seen it but haven't been able to confirm with my telescope.

www.StoryLinkRadio.com Early in the 21st century, nearly twenty years after the invention of atomic power and ten years after the first lunar landing, the four-man crew of the Ares has landed on Mars in the Mare Cimmerium. A week after the landing, Dick Jarvis, the ship's American chemist, sets out south in an auxiliary rocket to photograph the landscape. Eight hundred miles out, the engine on Jarvis' rocket gives out, and he crash-lands into one of the Thyle regions. Rather than sit and wait for rescue, Jarvis decides to walk back north to the Ares. Just after crossing into the Mare Chronium, Jarvis comes across a tentacled Martian creature attacking a large birdlike creature. He notices that the birdlike Martian is carrying a bag around its neck, and recognizing it as an intelligent being, saves it from the tentacled monstrosity. The rescued creature refers to itself as Tweel. Tweel accompanies Jarvis on his trip back to the Ares, in the course of which the pair encounter many bizarre Martian creatures and endure numerous life-threatening adventures. "A Martian Odyssey" was created by American writer Stanley G. Weinbaum originally published in the July 1934 issue of Wonder Stories. It was followed four months later by a sequel, "Valley of Dreams". Isaac Asimov described "A Martian Odyssey" as "a perfect Campbellian science fiction story, before John W. Campbell." In Asimov's words, "The Martian Tweel may be the first creature in science fiction to fulfil Campbell's dictum, 'write me a creature who thinks as well as a man, or better than a man, but not like a man'." Asimov considered "A Martian Odyssey" to be one of only three stories that changed the way all subsequent ones in the science fiction genre were written. It is the oldest short story selected for inclusion in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and it was voted one of the all-time best sci-fi stories, coming in second only to Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall."

Another hour with Adriean Koleric on street art, collage, podcasting from a VW and being a Detroit Pistons fan in Western Canada. You can find the first part here. An architect and painter that inspires Adriean is Will Alsop. The OCAD building can be seen in pictures on the web! Such wow! Try Flickr. Adriean was also inspired by Frank R. Paul. Just look at the images that pop up in a DuckDuckGo search! Gorgeous. Frank R. Paul illustrated a number of pulp magazines in his time like Science Wonder Stories. Adriean worked with Chad Kouri, with the Monster Lamp. Motomichi Nakamura also did a Monster Lamp. Keep an eye on Kijiji if you want to be a Taco Skate Co. intern. Meet Murphy, the amazing pug sidekick and Adriean’s dog. Stickerapp.com is Adriean’s goto for custom stickers. Adriean used to host a radio show on CJSR. What’chu talking ‘bout? We chat about Andre Drummond and Mr. Drummond. Keep an eye on the Think Item Instagram account for art giveaways like the one we talked about on the show. Adriean can be found on Twitter, Facebook and his site thinkitem.com or over at the new Taco Skate Co. Thanks for listening! Peep our FB page, Twitter, or Patreon. Later, yo.
