Life doesn't always unfold the way you imagined. For Tara, that meant rethinking everything she thought she knew about love, family, and the “perfect” timing. After years in relationships that weren't moving toward the future she desired, she found herself at a crossroads: stay stuck waiting for someone else to come around, or start creating the life she dreamed of on her own.In this episode, Tara opens up about the heartbreak of leaving long-term relationships, the fear and uncertainty of starting over at 38, and the courage it took to finally consider solo motherhood. She shares her experiences with fertility testing, choosing a sperm donor, a difficult miscarriage, and the incredible support she's found in this SMBC community as she takes those first steps toward becoming a single mom by choice.Whether you're exploring solo motherhood yourself or simply need a reminder that starting over is possible, Tara's story is filled with courage, clarity, and deep self-trust.In this episode on pursuing solo motherhood, we discuss:Feeling stuck in relationships and deciding when it's time to choose yourself; The fear of starting over in your late 30s and facing fertility decisions alone; How finances, support systems, and fear hold women back from solo motherhood;Fertility testing, donor conception, and facing miscarriage as a single woman; The emotional growth that comes from doing it scared; The power of connection and finding your people in the SMBC community; And more from Tara's deeply honest and inspiring journey.Resources mentioned in this episode:
In this powerful and deeply moving episode of the Surviving Siblings Podcast®, Maya Roffler sits down with Amanda, who shares the heartbreaking story of losing her older brother, Bill, to hyperthermia in the Arizona desert. Amanda walks us through the unique sibling dynamic they shared, the evolution of their relationship as adults, and the tragic events that unfolded in the summer of 2013. From the moment Amanda lost her housing at 19 and moved across the country into Bill's home, to the tight-knit bond they formed in the years that followed, Amanda paints a vivid picture of how integral her brother was to her journey. The story then takes a devastating turn as she recounts the day she learned Bill went missing — and the unimaginable moments that followed. Amanda also opens up about the difficult grief path she's navigated since, including the mental, emotional, and spiritual toll of losing someone in such a preventable way. She shares how her healing journey eventually led to founding the nonprofit Bottles for Bill, which provides bottled water and education to prevent heat-related deaths — a legacy of purpose built from heartbreak. This episode is a raw, real, and unforgettable conversation about loss, sibling connection, resilience, and turning grief into action. In This Episode: (0:00:00) – Introducing Amanda and Her Brother Bill Maya welcomes Amanda, who begins to share her journey as a surviving sibling and her bond with her older brother Bill, a world-traveling Army veteran. (0:01:00) – Growing Up With a Nine-Year Age Gap Amanda reflects on her childhood in a small Michigan town, the long-distance sibling relationship she had with Bill, and how they reconnected when she became a teenager. (0:03:00) – Rebuilding Their Bond in Young Adulthood Amanda explains how a family divorce and new technology helped bring her and Bill closer as she navigated college and adult life. (0:05:00) – The Cross-Country Move That Changed Everything Amanda shares how Bill invited her and her now-husband to Arizona after she became suddenly homeless — and how this gesture solidified their relationship and support for each other. (0:10:00) – Tragedy, Joy, and Complicated Grief Amanda recounts the loss of a beloved figure in her life, her brother's newborn son, and how multiple layers of grief interwove during this season of transition and growth. (0:16:00) – A Family Trip and a Final Hug Amanda shares precious memories from a family trip to Michigan taken just one week before Bill's death — and the last time she ever saw her brother alive. (0:18:00) – The Day Bill Went Missing Amanda describes the moment she received the call that something was wrong, the shock that followed, and the surreal experience of traveling to the desert in search of answers. (0:25:00) – The Moment Everything Changed Amanda shares the exact moment her family was told Bill was gone — and the primal scream that will forever live in her memory. (0:30:00) – What Happened to Bill? Amanda walks through the investigation, autopsy, and heartbreaking discovery that her brother had died from hyperthermia — extreme heat exposure — after becoming disoriented in the desert. (0:35:00) – The Unimaginable Grief of a Preventable Loss Amanda opens up about the psychological torment of losing someone to something so preventable — and how it sent her spiraling into questions and “what ifs.” (0:44:00) – The Role of Therapy and Asking for Help Amanda shares how grief therapy helped her pause her obsessive search for answers and gave her permission to simply feel her pain and begin healing. (0:51:00) – Grieving While in Partnership Amanda discusses what it was like grieving alongside her husband, who also knew and loved Bill, and how deep communication became the foundation for getting through the hardest season of their marriage. (0:56:00) – Honoring Bill's Legacy with Purpose Amanda introduces her nonprofit Bottles for Bill and how a small act of asking for $5 water donations turned into a six-year mission that's now donated over 300,000 bottles of water and saved lives. In this episode of For The Dads, Will and Sherm share a few stories and lots of laughs about wild family vacations, intense baby changing battles, and relatable dad anecdotes. Will recaps his recent family vacation to Banff National Park—what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway turned into a grueling uphill battle on a hike he definitely underestimated. Sherm brings us into the early chaos of raising a newborn, including a wild (and slightly terrifying) moment on the changing table with his 4-week-old. The boys also break down their favorite movies to watch with their kids, swap parenting wins and losses, and try to wrap their heads around the internet's latest rabbit hole: "Gooning." It’s honest, hilarious, and filled with the kind of stories every dad (and future dad) can relate to. Tap in, fellas. Papa Team 6, we ride. —-- Timeline 0:00 - A Message From Will 1:12 - We Hit Record 9:20 - Catching Up With PT6 38:26 - Will Took A Family Vacation To Canada 52:16 - Crib Training 1:03:49 - Will’s Hike From HELL 1:21:03 - The Battle Of Sherm’s Deep 1:28:00 - Call-Ins: Top Kids Movies + What To Expect after 8 Weeks 1:47:45 - What’s Going To Be Best For Them 30 Years From Now, Not 30 Seconds —-- For The Dads is for every guy who needs a place to talk, vent, and laugh about all the insane, hilarious, and chaotic sh** (sometimes literal) that comes with being a dad. Hosted by Will Compton–NFL Vet, creator of Bussin' With the Boys, and proud dad of two. This show isn’t about expert advice and how fatherhood is the greatest thing on earth—it’s about embracing the love and suck of parenthood every day. From balancing work and family to battling the mental load, fears, and the moments that wreck you in the best way, we dive into it all with honesty, vulnerability, and a sense of humor. Cause at the end of the day... us dads have no idea what we're doing. Alongside Will is his producer Sherman Young, a soon-to-be dad who’s currently enjoying his last few months of uninterrupted sleep and freedom. Together, they’ll break down everything that can go right and wrong (...usually wrong) when you bring tiny humans into this world. Expect funny parenting stories, laughs, call-ins, advice, weekly themes, and the kind of conversations you’d have over a cold beer in the garage. Whether you’re raising teens or still Googling “how to install a car seat”, For the Dads is the ultimate podcast for dads who are in it, about to be in it, or just trying to do their best while screwing it up along the way. ----- FOLLOW THE BOYS Instagram: / Forthedadspod Twitter: / Forthedadspod Facebook: / Forthedadspod LISTEN iTunes: http://bit.ly/BWTB_Apple Spotify: http://bit.ly/BWTB_Spotify ----- SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Bud Light - Easy to Drink. This week on Chins and Giggles, we're hopping across the border and straight into a reality check! Mayra's Mexico trip serves up all the feels- from appreciating different lifestyles to realizing just how bougie we've gotten as adults (hello, A/C and iced coffee). We're talking family vacations, why our childhoods were DIY Disneyland, and how we're now making up for it with every adult trip. Plus, what did you think “rich” meant growing up? If you said eating at Olive Garden and your own bedroom, you're one of us. Stick around for the chaotic "Who's Most Likely To" Garcia Family edition… someone's definitely getting exposed.
What if the desire to become a parent is strong, but the partner hasn't shown up?In this episode, I'm talking with Viveka, a school psychologist who has spent her career supporting kids and families—and who's now navigating her own path to solo motherhood.Viveka started out as a preschool special education teacher, is certified as a yoga instructor and nature therapy guide, and brings a deeply grounded, global perspective to everything she does. She's biracial, trilingual, a former Indian classical dancer, and one of those people who's just naturally good with children. When Viveka found herself single in her late thirties and experiencing dating burnout, she decided it was time to freeze her eggs. But once she took a step into this world, she realized that she could be that woman who decides to pursue solo motherhood. Now over a year into her process of becoming a single mother by choice, Viveka shares what it's looked like to shift her priorities, explore known donor conception through Seed Scout, and start the process of trying to conceive—without waiting for a partner. This conversation is about so much more than logistics. It's about identity, intuition, culture, and what happens when you finally give yourself permission to want what you want.In this episode about choosing solo parenthood, we talk about:The early stages of becoming a solo mom by choice;Experiencing dating burnout;Choosing solo motherhood when you find yourself single in your 30s or 40s;Cultural considerations and family conversations;Using Seed Scout to find a known sperm donor;Navigating fertility clinics, timing, and IUI with a known donor;Balancing career, future dreams, and the realities of single parenting; And more.Connect with Viveka on instagram: Solo Mama To Be (@soloparentonpurpose)

Ever come back from a “vacation” more exhausted than when you left — and with an extra suitcase full of resentment? Yeah, same. In this episode, JoAnn and Brie spill the sunscreen-slicked tea on why family vacations often feel like just another unpaid gig for moms. From packing every single toothbrush (only to have your teen forget theirs anyway), to mediating mid-flight meltdowns, they're calling out the myth of the relaxing mom-cation and replacing it with real, doable strategies. JoAnn shares her minimalist, “they'll survive” approach, while Brie admits to scheduling activities with military precision and still being the family glue. Whether your crew is full of moody teens or snack-demanding toddlers, they'll help you reclaim a slice of peace — even if it's just a solo iced coffee with your name on it. So if your idea of paradise includes a nap without being touched or questioned, hit play. You'll laugh, nod in solidarity, and finally learn how to make your next trip feel a little less like work. This week on Two Parents & A Podcast — we're back from a big family trip and giving our official Charleston recap: hotel ratings, travel highlights, and our new favorite parenting moment. OK, quick disclaimer if you're new here (hi!) — this episode is a little chaotic. We do start with a 5-minute deep dive into women's haircuts (??) and I was in kind of a flat mood for the first 15 minutes… but I came around and honestly this might be our most fun episode yet. (Also yes, we filmed in bed.) We talk about why Tate would rather play with an AirPods case than an actual toy, share updates from hotel life (Suite Life of Bubber), and fill you in on our wood floor drama back home. In Bicker of the Week, it's Booking.com vs. booking direct (and for the record, I think I'm up 2-0 on Harrison). In Things We DMed Each Other, we're talking landline phones for kids, ChatGPT brain scans (@Harrison should have been studied), and whether self-driving cars are actually safer than humans??? You've probably heard the phrase, “It takes a village”, but what does that actually look like when you're choosing to become a mom on your own?Today's guest is the perfect example of why becoming a single mother by choice doesn't mean you have to raise your child alone. You'll hear exactly what it can look like to build a deeply supportive village, both before and after becoming a solo mom.In this episode, I'm joined by Sige, a psychotherapist and solo mother by choice who brings a wealth of wisdom from both her personal and professional life. Sige shares how a low AMH diagnosis and a breakup led her to pursue solo motherhood through IUI, and how she beat the odds by conceiving on her first try. But it's her unique approach to communal living and her commitment to building intentional support systems that truly make her story stand out. Together, we talk about what it takes to raise a child without a partner, not by doing it all alone, but by choosing interdependence, community, and creativity. In this episode on building a strong support system before and during solo motherhood, we discuss:How a low ovarian reserve shifted Sige's timeline and led her to IUI;The emotional pivot from partnership to solo parenting; What it's like to conceive on your first IUI attempt, despite low fertility markers; The practical and emotional benefits of communal living;Navigating dating and boundaries as a solo mom;How to create a village of support when raising a child alone;Introducing donor conception and donor siblings to your child;Reclaiming creativity and rediscovering yourself after early motherhood; And so much more.Connect with Sige WeismanYou can learn more about Sige's therapy work on her website.Connect with her artwork on Instagram, @sigeweisman.art or at www.sigeweisman.com.Resources mentioned in this episode:Book: How to Conceive Naturally: And Have a Healthy Pregnancy after 30

The desire to share life with a partner doesn't just disappear when we choose to start our families on our own. And it doesn't have to. Today's new episode is a beautiful reminder that both things can be true: you can want motherhood and partnership, and you don't have to give up one to have the other. At 35, Erin Russell was faced with the hard realization that her family line would end with her if she didn't pursue parenthood soon, so she started seriously considering solo motherhood. But right as she was preparing to begin fertility treatments, life threw her a curveball — she met someone.Erin was clear about what she wanted and gave the relationship space to grow. But when it became obvious they weren't aligned on having kids, she made the powerful decision to walk away. She ordered donor sperm the very next day.Becoming a mom didn't erase Erin's hope of sharing life with a partner. Just two months after her son was born, she started dating again — not out of pressure or urgency, but as a way to reconnect with herself, enjoy adult time, and stay open to love. Now that her son is two and she's happily in a relationship that feels like the right fit, Erin reflects on what it's been like to still want partnership as a solo mom by choice, and how she's navigating love, parenting, and a changing sense of identity all at once.In this episode, we talk about:How Erin knew it was time to pursue solo motherhoodThe challenges of navigating IUI, IVF, and insurance hurdlesWhy "just surviving" the newborn stage isn't enough, and how building a support system made all the differenceThe guilt and reality of sending your baby to daycare as a solo momDating as a solo mom: why Erin started early, how she set her own pace, and what she looked for in a partnerHow she's weaving her new relationship into her solo mom lifeAnd why the grief of doing it alone doesn't just disappear once your baby arrivesWhether you're considering solo motherhood, already parenting, or wondering if dating might fit into your life someday, Erin's story is full of honesty, hope, and real-world encouragement for wherever you are on the path.Want to connect with Erin Russell?Follow Erin on InstagramCheck out Erin's writingRead Erin's article on SMBCs (featuring me as an interviewee!)

In this episode, Jess takes us step-by-step through her family's spring break trip to Japan—a points and miles masterpiece that cost just $200 total out of pocket for four round-trip flights and multiple hotel stays. From first class flights to washer/dryers in hotel rooms, this trip had it all. Whether you're dreaming of cherry blossoms, bullet trains, or Hello Kitty cafés, this episode is packed with tips for making Japan happen—without breaking the bank. Flying to Japan in Style with AA Miles Jess booked her family's flights using American Airlines miles, flying on Japan Airlines from Chicago to Tokyo, and shares her tips for snagging first-class saver award seats, business-class seats, and also premium-economy seats. Staying in Tokyo, Family Style For the Tokyo leg, Jess chose the Hyatt House Shibuya, a new property that has quickly become her top recommendation for families. Kyoto on a Budget with Hyatt Place After Tokyo, the family took the bullet train to Kyoto and stayed at the Hyatt Place Kyoto, a Category 2 gem offering amazing value. Activities included exploring Fushimi Inari Shrine, tasting local snacks at Nishiki Market, and spending several hours with deer at Nara Park—Molly's favorite part of the trip! Luxury Final Night at the Conrad Tokyo For their final night, Jess used Hilton free-night certificates to stay at the Conrad Tokyo, a luxury property with top-tier service. From Hello Kitty water bottles at checkout to executive-lounge cocktails, it was the perfect way to end the trip. Jess doesn't recommend it for the location alone, but if you've got free night certificates, she says it's 100% worth it. A trip to Japan for a family of four with flights and hotels for $200? On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson welcomes actor and comedian Josh Meyers, cohost of Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers— a podcast he does with his brother, late-night talk show host Seth Meyers. In this engaging conversation, Meyers shares the inspiration behind the podcast, its memorable guests (from Bill Gates to Tiffany Haddish), and why childhood vacations provide such great storytelling material. “It's a great equalizer,” he notes. “They all were kids once, and they all took trips with their families.” Meyers talks about his Los Angeles neighborhood Franklin Village, name-dropping a few go-to local spots. He also shares his love for solo ski trips to Mammoth Mountain. “When it gets to the winter, I can't stop myself from going up to Mammoth. I love it so much,” he gushes. He also maps out a dream California road trip from L.A. to Palm Springs to Idyllwild, highlights under-the-radar gems like Los Olivos and Sea Ranch, and shares a particularly indulgent memory: a legendary lunch at the French Laundry in Yountville. In Family Trips fashion, the episode closes with a rapid-fire round of questions, where Meyers chooses his ideal trip setting—“you had me at mountains”—and declares the ultimate Golden State driving soundtrack.
