Burgerville Workers Support Fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/defend-burgerville-workers-from-retaliation-fund We start this week's episode with a couple stories about Grindr and Google weaponizing Return to the Office policies against their workers who have been working remotely. We also follow up with the TCGPlayer union, as eBay has refused to recognize their election win. Workers at Burgerville have been locked out after management adopted a radically anti-union posture. From a large family, Chef Becky McGrath says she's been cooking for as long as she can remember. A segment on the "Today" show though, sealed the deal for her to go to culinary school. She was accepted to a particular culinary school in Ireland, where she learned how important (and necessary) it is to source as local as possible. Coming back to the states, she worked in a few pubs and a grocery store chain before landing the head chef job at Burgerville. Chef Becky explains why their philosophy behind food is so important to her and why she thinks she fits in this role perfectly.

Travel Gluten Free Podcast Season 09 Episode 01 Travel Gluten Free on International Flights We kick off Season 09 of the Travel Gluten-free Podcast with an informational episode giving the gluten free traveler advice on how to navigate international air travel. While domestic air travel can be challenging, adding more hours and a foreign language or two gives us more hurdles to overcome when we are on our vacation. However, we can still navigate the international travel scene without getting sick when you know what to do and how to prepare for travel to Europe, Asia, Africa, Iceland, or South America. Finding Gluten Free Eats at Airports While some airports, such as Atlanta International have food guides to show you which restaurants could possibly accommodate a gluten-free eater, they may not be safe for someone who is Celiac because preparation of the food is essential for safe eating! However, you can use the Find Me Gluten Free app - even inside airports - to find safe food to eat. If you're flying through Portland (PDX) you can definitely eat at the Burgerville restaurant, just make sure to tell them to tag your order with a gluten allergy. Using Equal Eats Cards at International Airports I absolutely love Equal Eats cards! They not only tell wait staff and chefs what you can and can't eat in the foreign language of your choice, they also inform food preparation people about how your food needs to be handled. In addition, they are well-vetted and can be customized for food allergies, and sensitivities in addition to the details of Celiac disease, bringing an extra level of safety to traveling gluten free. Podcast Resources Journey with Travel Gluten Free when you get The Guide to Traveling Gluten Free which walks you through planning your next gluten-free travel adventure! Is there a real rivalry between Mac and Newberg? Or is it all in our head? We found two people with connections to both towns who were willing to vouch for their town. Our friend Kristen Stoller grew up in McMinnville and now lives in Newberg, and bud Mike VanBuren grew up in Newberg and now lives in Mac. We have a good time pitting town against town in this episode, but also point out the things we think each is doing better than the other (Burgerville sits high on the list...). Have fun with us as we gently rib each other about their differences and connect about their similarities. Plus, what we see for the future of both of these towns.

“When we created the vision for the Pacific Northwest to be the healthiest region on the planet, that was really our stake in the ground to say, "We're going to look at this through pillars of people, product, and place. The people part being our employees and our guests as well as our suppliers. The product being really, what are we doing for stretch goals in our region around locality. And then place being, making sure that every decision that we're making goes through that lens of the vision around our region specifically. And then as we all know, March of 2020 hit, and really quickly, we were looking at our business to say, "How are we, one, going to stay in business? And two, what do we stand for going through this time period?"The forefront of everything we decided from that point forward was to stay proactive. That has been one of our brand tenets, and it has helped us a lot manage all sorts of crazy disruptions none of us could have foreseen, or we could have, but maybe didn't.”
There are new contracts all over the place on this week's episode of Work Stoppage. We start with Kaiser Permanente, where a tentative agreement has been reached to prevent the planned implementation of a two tiered contract. Then we discuss the end of the month long John Deere strike, after workers ratified a new deal which contains hard fought gains but maintains their two tiered system. Also this week, IATSE has ratified a new contract against the wishes of a majority of union members due to the use of an undemocratic delegate system. HelloFresh workers have faced sub-poverty wages, racist abuse from management, dangerous working conditions, and now a vicious union busting campaign as they fight for their right to collectively bargain. Finally, Burgerville workers have fought hard for three years, making admirable gains for workers across the company, and now finally have a historic tentative contract agreement to become the first recognized fast food union in the country. This week, Roqayah and Kumars are joined by Ashley Reyes and Cam Crowell, former workers of the Portland-based fast food chain Little Big Burger. Both Ashley and Cam were fired for their involvement in the recent campaign to unionize Little Big Burger, and they join the crew less than 24 hours before their union election to talk about these organizing efforts. Ashley and Cam talk about the issues facing workers at Little Big Burger, and explain how this led to collective action culminating in their union campaign. We talk about the impact of the success of Burgerville workers in forming a union, as well as their decision to join Burgerville workers in the IWW. They also discuss how their efforts resulted in a targeted harassment campaign by management designed to coerce other Little Big Burger workers from joining. This included the firing of nine employees including Cam and Ashley, and the creation of a wildly conspiratorial website that specifically targeted organizers. We learn why these management tactics have been in vain, and how the push for the Little Big Union has gained traction. You can find out more about Little Big Union at littlebigunion.org, follow the union on Twitter @LBU_IWW, and support the Little Big Union strike fund by giving to their fundraising campaign. We talk to Drew Edmonds, a Burgerville worker in Portland, Oregon, and an organizer with the Burgerville Workers Union. We talk about the fight Drew and his coworkers led to form the nation’s first federally recognized fast food union (followed by workers at Little Big Burger, another Portland chain). We talk about what it was like to unionize from the ground up across Burgerville stores, about how they have used the power of their union in the push to secure better wages and fairer treatment, and about the union-busting backlash and firings that they’ve faced from the company in response. We also talk about how their story speaks to the effectiveness and necessity of the organizing model of the IWW (the Industrial Workers of the World), which both the Burgerville Workers Union and the Little Big Union are affiliated with. It's our 50th episode and we are getting ready to win that big Powerball jackpot! We've got more to say on the Varsity Blues scandal and we're supporting Wendy Williams in a big way, "how you doin', girl?". We're chatting about a Portland podcaster that got carjacked at a Burgerville and we are rounding out the show with a chat about dating A-Z slang! You don't want to miss it!
Employees at the regional chain Little Big Burger announced this week they intend to unionize. They follow in the footsteps of another regional chain, Burgerville, which formed the first federally recognized fast food union last year. We talk with a Little Big Burger employee about the effort to unionize. And Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of Labor Education Research at Cornell University, tells us why fast food unions are so uncommon.
Hey friends! So today is a 'very special' episode of Funemployment Radio, where Greg recaps what happened to him in what has become the most Portlandy Portland headline of all time :) Have a great afternoon all, back tomorrow to our (hopefully) regularly scheduled programming! (also if this if your first time listening - hi! Just a heads up, there is profanity in our show, today mostly having to do with what the crazy man was yelling at Greg. Thanks so much!)
The Burgerville Workers Union (BVWU) is the first officially recognized fast-food workers union in the United States. They are an affiliate of the Industrial Workers of the World and have embraced militant union organizing strategies to do what traditional labor unions have been unable to accomplish by forming a fast-food workers union. We spoke with Shane Burley about his recent piece for Think Progress on BVWU and learned more about how these workers were able to succeed in forming their union, how long the fight has been happening, and what challenges lay in front of Burgerville workers. We also discussed the need to rethink labor organizing under late capitalism, where workers no longer self-identify with particular forms of industry and precarious labor is the norm. BVWU's successes in some ways points to the need to re-embrace as Shane says, "19th century unionism" in the 21st century. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Fascism Today: What It Is And How To End It and has had articles printed in Roar Magazine, Think Progress, In These Times, Jacobin, Labor Notes, and more. Episode 118: Thousands of workers, and supporters, have rallied and marched for several years under the banner “Fight for 15”—a demand that fast food workers, and all workers, be paid at least $15-an-hour, almost double the poverty-level federal minimum wage, and, as important, have the right to form a union. It’s been a hard slog but a bright spot shines: workers who toil for Burgerville in Oregon have won union representation rights at three of the chain’s locations. I talk with two of the workers, Emmett Schlenz and James Curry. Then, we see through a judge’s eyes the crisis facing the immigration system—a crisis exacerbated by the racism hurled at immigrants from the Oval Office. It’s my chat with Ashley Tabaddor, an immigration judge in Los Angeles and the president of the National Association of Immigration Judges. Our Robber Baron is the CEO of Burgerville.

Todays solecast is an in-depth discussion with an editor from Its Going Down. IGD just launched a new anarchist news podcast called “This is America,” which is meant to be a short, every-other-day digest of anarchist analysis and activity. Check it out. In this episode have a wide ranging discussion about what anarchist & anti-authoritarian resistance has looked like under Trump and potential paths for the future. We talk about lessons learned from J20, Standing Rock, Prison Strikes, Airport Shutdowns and more. We talk about the things anarchists have done with disaster relief, anti-fascism and pipeline blockades. We discuss certain modes of resistance that people might be interested in replicating, whether its anarchist student groups, unions (like the Burgerville union) or The Black Rose Federation in LA helping to organize resistance against ICE Deportations. We also talk a little about media & ideology.
Zack Pattin fills in for Dan, when he and Steph talk with Mark Medina, an organizer for the IWW in Portland. Three of then discuss the recent success of the Burgerville Workers Union and their efforts to organize multiple Burgerville locations in Portland.
On this episode of Working Lunch, the Align team has an extended interview with one of the key people guiding the restaurant industry through major policy issues around the country. They talked to the National Restaurant Association's head of government affairs, Cicely Simpson, about menu labeling and blueprint for proactive efforts on a variety of issues. Meanwhile workers at a second Burgerville restaurant voted to union so we're taking a closer look at what makes brands vulnerable to this type of action even when they're considered to be progressive companies. As always, you can get the latest top items affecting business operators from the legislative scorecard, plus, a little something for the gamblers listening...our picks for the Preakness.
Big week in labor organizing news to unravel on the Working Lunch podcast with a win out west where workers voted to unionize a Burgerville restaurant, and a second one might not be far behind. But in Washington D.C., labor organizing activity is getting pushback from Congress which is taking a fresh look at worker center groups and their union-like activity. Plus, on this week's Legislative Scorecard, how paid leave is sweeping across Texas while there is model sexual harassment legislation emerging in New York.
There’s a battle unfolding among Democrats in East Portland for a seat in the state Senate. It’s a race predominantly about one issue: the city’s housing crisis. But as Lauren Dake reports, the results could shift the state Senate to the left politically and send a message to lawmakers about rent control. And the votes are in. Workers at a southeast Portland Burgerville overwhelmingly approved a vote to unionize. Organizers say that makes them one of the only federally recognized unions in the fast food industry. Molly Solomon reports.
On this episode of the Working Lunch podcast, the first QSR in the country is set to unionize. The crew at Align analyzes what happened to Burgerville and whether the playbook for unionizing restaurants been written heading into the union vote. Should other QSR operators start preparing for this at their restaurant? Also on the show, the six-month anniversary of the #MeToo movement that is showing no signs of slowing down. What does that mean for future policy and the reputation of the restaurant industry? Those stories plus the legislative scorecard with the latest political and policy stories affecting employers around the country.
On this episode of LabourWave, Andrea Anarchy and Person X discussed the recent groundswell of strike activity in the US and abroad including the General Strike of West Virginia teachers and the International Women's Day strike where 5.3 million women in Spain participated. We did not note the 3-day strike waged by Burgerville workers or the two-week strike by University of Illinois graduate workers, but we wish to acknowledge these activities here. We also played an audio clip from Marxist-feminist scholar, Silvia Federici, from her talk given at Oregon State University on February 14 titled "Wages for Housework and #MeToo." In this clip, Federici discusses the wages for housework campaign spearheaded in the 1970s and how it responded to the varying trends predominant within the feminist movement of the day. We ended our episode by discussing the continuing wave of high school and middle school student walkouts protesting gun violence in schools and congressional inaction on the matter. We interviewed Mark and Alex from the Burgerville Workers Union about the efforts to build the first (and only) fast-food restaurant union in the United States. Mark and Alex gave our listeners an overview of the unionization campaign at Burgerville, the real working conditions of Burgerville employees, guilty consumption habits from supporters of their efforts ("but isn't Burgerville better than McDonald's?"), and the backlash they have experienced from Burgerville owners including the union-busting tactics of Bullard Law- a notorious union busting law firm that is willing to physically assault workers to intimidate them from attempting to better their work lives.
