Criminal Justice Evolution Podcast - Hosted by Patrick Fitzgibbons
Hello and welcome back to The CJEvolution Podcast. Thank you for tuning in and supporting this show throughout the years. Please share this episode and others with your family and friends. Give us that 5-Star Rating and Review on Apple Podcasts. A big thanks to YOU, The criminal justice professional. Whatever you are doing in the first responder field thank you for doing it. There is a lot of negativity directed towards first responders these days but remember that the majority of people support you. Keep doing an amazing job and be safe. I struggled. I was in a dark place for a long time. I was in pain, and I masked it with alcohol. I was contemplating hurting myself. I decided to finally reach out and ask for help and I am grateful I did. FHE Health and The Shatterproof Program saved my life. If you are struggling, you don't have to stay there. We can and will help you. Reach out today 303.960.9819. https://fherehab.com/services/first-responders/ So excited to have my next guests on the show: David Dachinger David Dachinger is a retired Fire Lieutenant with over 21 years as a leader in emergency services. He has written department policies, instructed fire and rescue training and organized firehouse wellness initiatives. As a fire officer, he often worked as Acting Shift Commander and Incident Commander. Along with Bonnie Rumilly, LCSW/EMT and Dr. Stacy Raymond, he produces and co-hosts the Responder Resilience Podcast. David is also a Stage IV cancer survivor. Combining expertise in multimedia, crisis leadership and major medical challenges, along with his wife, psychotherapist Tamara Green, David creates calming programs that de-stress the lives of first responder and, cancer patients through their Loving Meditations App. Dr. Stacy Raymond Dr. Stacy Raymond has been practicing as a Clinical Psychologist in Ridgefield, Connecticut for 22 years. She is a trauma specialist, helping clients overcome anxiety, panic and PTSD. Half of her practice is dedicated to First Responders and Military Veterans. Her father is a Marine and a retired police officer. She is an Approved Consultant in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a highly effective form of psychotherapy that quickly helps people heal from and move past their worst memories. Stacy created Responder Wellness, Inc., a non-profit whose mission is to subsidize or provide free of charge safety equipment and wellness services to First Responders in Fairfield County, CT with plans to grow state-wide. She is a clinician, speaker and trainer for law enforcement and fire service peer support. David and Stacy are hosts of the extremely popular First Responder Resilience Podcast. In this show we cover important topics such as depression, addiction challenges, but the main takeaway is that if you are suffering there is hope. Your wellness and recovery is waiting for you. Tamara's wish for you: What if everybody woke up and gave themselves tremendous kudos for even getting out of bed. Acknowledge yourself and say ‘Yay, me'. Give yourself a lot of kudos for just getting up every day and doing what we do. David: I'm grateful for my body and all the miracles it performs without us even being aware of it. It's super important to acknowledge and be grateful, to stay in touch with our bodies and make sure we move them every day. Most Influential Person David: Eckhart Tolle Tamara: Michael Beckwith Effect on Emotions David: Mindfulness has taken judgment out of emotions. I move through them. If it's something negative, then I'm able to move through it quicker. Thoughts on Breathing Tamara: If you can breathe, you can meditate or be mindful. Just being able to focus on nothing else but the inhale and the exhale. That's it – Mindfulness, right there! David: Breathing comes into play all the time. If I'm responding to an emergency and I need to really get focused and stop the mental chatter. Focusing on the breath is a great way to quiet down my mind. Age eleven and comes in the first day and already the boys were just teasing and taunting her and telling her to lift up her top and all these terrible things during recess. So she went as far back into the schoolyard as she could go. She was crying, and I went after her. I told her, those guys are jerks and don't listen to them. I can tell you're a nice person. Let's be friends and that whole thing. I don't know if it was mindfulness but I was very present with her and I allowed her to cry and tell me why she moved. I started asking her all these questions. Curiosity is definitely a mindfulness tool. To this day, we are very, very good friends. What a chaotic time we are in! Even without a pandemic, it was already chaotic, what with politics and changes in society. Stir in a pandemic, and there is NO way to be calm. Right? Or maybe.... Maybe calm is not about what is happening around you, outside of you. Perhaps it comes from somewhere within you. Somewhere that knows you are separate from the external chaos. Our internal response to a chaotic world can be chaos... or we might be able to find calm. Especially if we can separate our thoughts from the events and emotions. If we can find a space between what is happening and how we respond. A space that is rooted in peace. On this episode of the Thriveology Podcast, I have a chance to speak with David Dachinger and Tamara Green. David is a firefighter and a Grammy nominated music composer (quite the contrast there!). And Tamara is an author and licensed therapist. When David was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (there IS no stage 5), his world shifted chaos from fighting fires to fighting cancer. He and Tamara realized that they needed to rally their resources to help in David's health and healing. That included meditation and mindfulness. The resources they developed are now helping others to find calm in the midst of chaos. Not a bad goal in today's world, is it? Listen below to hear their story and their method of bringing calm to the world through an app. RELATED RESOURCES LovingMeditations App David and Tamara's Website Calming Your Thriving Body Episode A Thriving Breath Episode Coping with COVID Series Thrive Principles Book

So my advice is to make self-care your absolute number one priority, do not let that fall to the wayside at all. So if you have a practice of maybe some kind of body movement like exercise or yoga, whatever don't stop doing it. Or if it is meditation do not stop doing that. Or maybe it's socialising and getting together with friends every once in a while. Make it a priority. When You Tripped Up Kristen brought us back to a time when things weren’t all that well. She owned a daycare when she was twenty two years old. She had this amazing family therapist who worked in her school. He did all of this great training for the staff. He was a friend and a really great guy. When she got the bad news about being infertile, she called him to explain what was happening. She was waiting for him to say everything would be ok and all is still well, but she didn’t get that. He told her that he didn’t even recognize her anymore and that she’s in a state of scarcity. Find out what happened next by listening to the podcast. Proudest Moment in Partnership Kristen works with women and men going through infertility. There was one couple in particular that she was working with where the husband was so thoughtful, so nice, and so plugged in. He was taking care of his wife, working full-time, going to school full-time, trying to start a family, and taking care of his friend who had cancer. His friend ended up passing away and he found out that the fertility cycle didn’t work. He broke down. He was perceived as being the rock of their family and he just lost it. Do you follow your "Yes?"Following your "Yes" is about you taking a step forward in your partnerships by taking action and applying at least one thing you heard from our guests during their interviews this week. On today’s episode, all of this week’s guests have generously provided BONUS MATERIAL, not included in the interviews you listened to earlier this week. Each one has provided incredible examples of the power of following your “Yes”. Enjoy! Kongit Farrell (https://speakingofpartnership.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/E_MP_9165_kongit-1.jpg) Not Following - Even after Kongit had all the training and knowledge on how to have a healthy relationship, she still had one other trip up where she didn’t follow her “Yes”. She was in a relationship with someone who had a completely opposite vision than she did. She was so attracted to this person that she pushed her internal guidance aside. She was hoping to help change his ways with her wit but it was hopeless. She didn’t follow her “Yes” and was in a dead end relationship because of it. Following - Kongit’s easiest “Yes” was when she said yes to marrying her husband. Everything felt right, they both had the same vision, and they fit so well together. Everything felt so natural for her when she was around him and she didn’t have to think about it. She simply followed her heart and married the greatest man. Each of them were listening to someone else on what they should do. Each time she listened to this person, she would feel it was further and further away from what she’d believe. After some time when they were on the brinks of divorce, she told herself to listen to her own gut, and that’s where things started to turn around for the better. Listen to the interview to hear of a time when David didn’t follow his “Yes”. Following - David tells us of a time when he was a volunteer firefighter. He had come to realize that he was able to jump over one state and pursue a career in firefighting and simultaneously hold down his other career being a composer. He was getting a strong “Yes” when thinking about pursuing this. He ultimately did, tested for it and got the job. He was able to do what he loved being both a firefighter and composer. Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
This is an amazing couple. Not only are David Dachinger and Tamara Green married, they also are the co-founders of Loving Meditations and authors of the international bestseller, Live Calm With Cancer (and Beyond…). David is a Grammy® nominated composer, fire lieutenant and stage-4 cancer survivor. Tamara is a psychotherapist, dating & relationship coach, and meditation facilitator, who Elle Magazine dubbed “the soul-centered relationship and meditation expert.” Their cancer journey transformed and inspired them to pay their experiences forward to the cancer community. Together they create mindful wellness stress-reduction tools that dynamically assist those living with cancer and other major life challenges. Loving Meditations offers the only app specifically designed to help cancer patients, survivors and caregivers cope with their physical and emotional symptoms. When Did You Need to Work On This From A Mindfulness Standpoint? Tamara has had a mindfulness practice for quite some time, even before David’s diagnosis. Tamara had about two weeks of real worry and overwhelm after they received the news on his stage 4 cancer and their son’s lyme disease. One night she was thinking to herself on what advice she would give someone if they were going through the same feelings and emotions. She would recommend a spiritual practice, and mindful and meditation centre. She began to follow her own advice and she began to feel much better. Guiding Principle, Quote, or Mantra Make light of dark situations. AND I am here now, I am experiencing this in every moment. The Impact Meditation Has on Us Meditation can have a huge impact on healing someone. They not only cover meditation for the caregiver and patient, but started covering impact areas like Creating Calm, Personal Power and Vital Recharge for Caregivers. They’ve created support that not only helps someone in the moment, but supports them for years to come. Your Experience as the Patient It seemed even more impactful for David because he was a professional healthcare provider. He went from being the caregiver to the patient. He had to really get into the mainframe of receiving help from not only doctors and treatment, but also Tamara, friends and family. He really had to learn how to embrace the gifts that people were giving him through companionship and support. When You Tripped Up Tamara’s biggest trip up was during those first two weeks after they found out about the diagnosis. She felt like she wasn’t even in her own body. She didn’t feel helpful towards herself or for her guys; she was just going through the motions. There was one evening down the road in particular that she felt completely helpless. She needed a sign that everything was going to be alright. Find out this incredible story by listening to the interview. Proudest Moment in Partnership She describes her proudest moment being her entire courtship with her husband. She had put so much work into understanding her patterns and finding her vision, and now everything had paid off. When her and her husband first started to know each other, she felt great going into it, felt confident with everything, and it resulted in her finding her person. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Relationships are sacred. AND Make sure that you laugh and dance.
