Segment 1: • Peacemaking vs. Reconciliation: Reconciliation is deeper than simply making peace—it's about restoring relationships. • Matthew 5 & James 4: Conflict stems from desires within, not just others' actions. True reconciliation begins with self-examination. • Key Takeaway: Biblical reconciliation requires heart transformation, not just resolving the issue on the surface. Segment 2: • Idolatrous Desires: Conflict often arises from selfish desires, like control or approval, that become idols in our lives. • Righteous Anger vs. Sinful Anger: Anger rooted in selfishness can lead to sin, even if initially justified. • Key Takeaway: Real peace comes from recognizing and surrendering our idolatrous desires to Christ, rather than managing conflict externally. Segment 3: • Ongoing Repentance: Repentance is a continual process for Christians—not just a one-time event. • Godly vs. Worldly Sorrow: True repentance leads to change; worldly sorrow focuses on consequences, not transformation. • Key Takeaway: Genuine repentance involves a heart change, turning toward righteousness, and repairing relationships. Segment 4: • Forgiveness vs. Moving On: True reconciliation requires forgiveness, not just moving past the conflict. • Attitudinal and Transactional Forgiveness: We must be ready to forgive, even without repentance, and offer full forgiveness when repentance occurs. • Key Takeaway: Biblical forgiveness mirrors God's forgiveness toward us—ready to forgive and restore, no matter the offense. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Case-control survey of EAGx attendees finds no behavioural or attitudinal changes after six months, published by Fods12 on July 27, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Prepared by James Fodor and Miles Tidmarsh EAGxAustralia 2023 Committee Abstract EAGx conferences are an important component of the effective altruism community, and have proven a popular method for engaging EAs and spreading EA ideas around the world. However, to date relatively little publicly available empirical evidence has been collected regarding the long term impact of such conferences on attendees. In this observational study we aimed to assess the extent to which EAGx conferences bring about change by altering EA attitudes or behaviours. To this end, we collected survey responses from attendees of the EAGxAustralia 2023 conference both before and six months after the conference, providing a measure of changes in EA-related attitudes and behaviours over this time. As a control, we also collected responses to the same survey questions from individuals on the EA Australia mailing list who did not attend the 2023 conference. Across 20 numerical measures we collected, we did not find any statistically significant differences in the six-month changes across the two groups. Specifically, we are able to rule out effect sizes of larger than about 20% for most measures. In general, we found self-reported EA attitudes and behaviours were remarkably consistent across most individuals over this time period. We provide a discussion of these results in the context of developing better measures of the impact of EAGx conferences, and conclude with some specific recommendations for future conference organisers. Background 'EAGx' is the branding used by the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) for centrally-supported but independently-organised conferences held around the world each year. The aim of these events is to communicate EA ideas, foster community growth and participation, and facilitate the formation of beneficial connections for EA projects. EAGx conferences have been organised in Australia every year since 2016 (with a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19pandemic), with the most recent event taking place in Melbourne in September 2023. While EAGx conferences have proved popular with attendees, relatively little publicly available evidence has been collected regarding their impact or effectiveness. The main source of information can be found in the forum sequence by Ollie Base. Most conference retrospective reports give details about attendance and self-reported attendee satisfaction, but do not attempt to measure the impact of the conference in achieving any concrete goals. The limited range of publicly-available evaluations is surprising given the importance of these events to the EA community, and has prompted comment on the EA forum regarding the relative lack of evaluation of EA projects generally, and of EAGx conferences specifically. For the past few years, the main form of EAGx evaluation has been a post-conference survey, along with a six-month follow-up, administered by CEA, in which attendees are asked to report the beneficial outcomes of the conference for them personally, including making new connections, starting new projects, or learning key information that informed major decisions. Of these, the number of new connections made is typically regarded as the most important, with the number of connections per dollar spent being used as a key metric by CEA in assessing effectiveness. These methods have a number of advantages, including ease of collection, ability to compare across locations and over time, and relative ease of interpretation. A major limitation of these existing measures is that they require survey respondents to explicitly make value judgements about their experienc...

"More sexual partners seems to correlate with higher divorce ratings. In 2000, the Center for Disease Control began tracking women who had reported different numbers of extramarital partners. Within five years, only 5% of women with 0 sexual partners before marriage had divorced. Women who had reported just one single sexual partner before marriage jumped up to a 22% divorce rate. That's a 17% increase due to just one partner. The average for 2-9 partners was 30%, and above 10 partners was 35%." Over the last week, I had a minor seismic shift in how I look at things. Rather than immediately defaulting to the negative, I opted to be positive. It's been a game-changer. Whether it lasts, who knows? But I do know that I'm trying to be more present and mindful of how I react to things. Also, I began my 50K training on Saturday and made a new friend. Turns out, she is doing Snowdrop at the end of the year! It's going to be a Big Party because there will be more friends joining in than previously known. I made a game-day decision to run the 10K at the Capt'n Karl's nighttime trail race on Saturday because that race marked my 10-year anniversary of Big Boy trail runs. Had a great mental outlook, despite my toes catching every dang rock. PS: I didn't fall. Dr. John Freer grew up as a struggling student and is passionate about sharing his experience and ongoing research on the attitudes of people toward those with disabilities, social inclusion, disabilities in education and much more. In a recent study of grade 4 students, which is continuing, Dr. Freer found that most of the students have already adopted a deficit view of disability. He has also developed the Tripartite Intervention for students, a 12-week program addressing how we feel about disabilities, how we act towards individuals with disabilities and the thoughts and stereotypes already developed. John is a Professor in the School of Community Studies at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario. He is the coordinator of the Educational Support program and helps to train students interested in pursuing a career in special education. We will demonstrate a Six-Step Process by which people's attitudes are being changed permanently on a population-wide basis by all forms of Mass Media. This process was developed to change those most-deeply held attitudes, which naturally are traditional Christian values. Once you hear this process, and understand the examples of its use, you will realize it is being simultaneously utilized in many areas by the Mass Media.
This week on the Progressive Agency podcast, I welcome Susan Baier to the show. She's been a marketing strategist for thirty years and began her company, Audience Audit, in 2009. Susan helps marketing organizations understand their best audiences based on attitudes and needs, rather than just demographics or purchase behavior. Susan shares how research can build your credibility as a thought leader, and give you a year's worth of valuable content for your audience. Hear insights about: What is attitudinal research and how can you do it with qualitative research tactics How attitudinal research helps marketing agencies and their clients get better results What types of advice do consumers want from their thought leaders Why research helps thought leaders with both strategic and tactical advice How research adds credibility to thought leadership Relevant and Impactful Attitudinal research can make your marketing initiatives more relevant, efficient, and impactful. My guest this week on the Progressive Agency Podcast, Susan Baier, knows that firsthand. She has been a marketing strategist for 30 years and began her company, Audience Audit, in 2009. Today, Susan helps marketing organizations understand their best audiences based on attitudes and needs rather than just demographics or purchase behavior. She shares how research can make thought leaders more credible and offer more valuable content ideas for marketers and agencies. Proving Them Wrong Many people think that attitudinal research can only be conducted through quantitative measures, like surveys. However, Susan Baier proves them wrong with her company Audience Audit. She uses qualitative research tactics, like focus groups, to understand the reasoning behind a buyer's decision. During our conversation, Susan explains how marketing agencies can benefit from understanding the intent of their unique audiences. Aiding the Buyer's Decision In today's world, buyers conduct so much of their own research before making a purchase. Typically a buyer has already decided to work with you before you have the opportunity to sell to them. This means that your content and credibility as a thought leader are doing most of the work for you. Susan explains how conducting attitudinal research helps you create relevant content for your audience while increasing your credibility in your industry. Our attitude can have a significant impact on our experiences. If we are upset, simple tasks might become frustrating. If we're in a happy mood, we might be able to deal with upsetting news a little easier. Attitude influences our perspective, our emotions, and ultimately the way we experience the world around us. With the proper attitude, we can build a better atmosphere to practice mindfulness. These attitudinal foundations work together to set the stage for mindfulness practice. They aren't meant to be practiced in any specific order, but they are interconnected. Dr. John Freer, Professor at St. Clair College Ontario Canada and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Windsor, is our special guest in this episode. Addressing attitudinal barriers to social inclusion is the focus of his research. He developed the Tripartite Intervention, a 12-week program addressing all the 3 domains of attitude, namely the affective (how one feels about disabilities), behavioral (how one acts towards individuals with disabilities), and cognitive (the thoughts and stereotypes one has) domains. From personal experience with Epilepsy as a child to working as an educational assistant in K-12 schools and from extensive research on attitudes of people towards disabilities, Dr. Freer developed the TI program. He offers this to educators to take it on and implement it in their own communities. Few takeaways: Interventions well-grounded in best evidence are important. It is possible that some of our interventions could be based on our own presumptions about disabilities and could potentially cause harm. Some findings of Dr. Freer's latest systematic review- Factors associated with positive attitudes towards disabilities- Improved contact with individuals with disabilities, females have more positive attitudes than males, more positive attitudes towards visible disabilities, more positive attitudes when students have more knowledge about disabilities. Interventions were effective in improving attitudes towards disabilities. We interview Nicholas Makins on his recent publication "Attitudinal Ambivalence: Moral Uncertainty for Non-Cognitivists". In this paper, Makins adopts a non-cognivist account of moral judgements, characterized not as beliefs but as cognitive attitudes, like desires or forms of will. The aim of the article is to show that this view can be better defended if one defines moral doubt not in terms of credential uncertainty (viz., lack of information) but as ambivalence – i.e., a situation where two conflicting desires clash with each other. The fascinating proposal is illustrated via some examples through the podcast conversation, which opens insightful reflection about the nature of moral attitudes and the strategy one should adopt in cases of moral doubt. People with disabilities represent 15% of the global population but are often left out of diversity initiatives, programs, surveys, and even basic conversations about workplace inclusion. Recent research from Global Disability inclusion and Mercer on the engagement gap of employees with disabilities shows a difference in some areas of up to 13% lower than non-disabled colleagues. So with many employers seeking to do better with equity, inclusion and belonging, what can they be doing to address this problem. To help us get some more insights into the issues, my guests this week are the research report authors Meg O'Connell, CEO & Founder of Global Disability Inclusion and Pete Rutigliano, Senior Principal at Mercer. In the interview, we discuss: • The State of Disability Employee Engagement Study • Employer attitudes to disabilities • Attitudinal barriers and dispelling myths • Research methodology and scope • Reasons for the engagement gap • The employee experience for people with disabilities • Building the right level of trust to allow people to be themselves • Hidden disabilities • The benefits of inclusion • Lessons from the pandemic • Hopes and predictions for the coming years Listen to this podcast in Apple Podcasts.

A marketing strategist for over 30 years, Susan Baier founded Audience Audit in 2009 to help organizations understand their best audiences based on attitudes and needs rather than just demographics or purchase behavior. She develops custom segmentation research for marketers and agencies around the world, supporting their efforts to create marketing initiatives that are more relevant, more efficient, and more impactful. Destination on the Left is joined again by Susan Baier to discuss the impact collaboration has on the travel and tourism industry. Susan is the founder of Audience Audit, a research firm that studies the attitudes behind consumer behaviors and beliefs. Susan teamed up with our host Nicole Mahoney to conduct a study about the far-reaching effects of coopetition, where perceived competitors accomplish something bigger than themselves by coming together. What You Will Learn: An overview of the findings from Susan and Nicole’s research study on collaboration The impact collaboration has on the travel and tourism industry How perceived competitors can use coopetition to accomplish something bigger than themselves by coming together How attitudinal research works, and why it is more effective in our industry The industry-wide sentiment toward collaboration in travel and tourism The three different types of collaborators and how each one affects the group dynamic Where tourism professionals are seeking resources on collaboration Collaboration in the Pandemic Susan Baier is back for another episode of Destination on the Left to discuss the impact collaboration has on the travel and tourism industry. She is the founder of Audience Audit, a research firm that studies the attitudes behind consumer behaviors and beliefs. Susan teamed up with host Nicole Mahoney to conduct a study about the far-reaching effects of coopetition, where perceived competitors accomplish something bigger than themselves by coming together. As we transition into a new year during these difficult times, it is important to understand how our organizations can use collaboration to navigate new challenges and measure our success. Data That Aligns With Your Goals There is an overwhelming amount of data available to destination marketers, but it is often the case that only a small portion of it aligns with our goals. So much data is virtually useless to us and as a result, we approach marketing strategy with expensive blind spots. While two individuals in a marketing segment may appear similar on the surface, they likely have two completely different sets of needs and problems that cannot be addressed with one blanket communication tactic. Attitudinal research offers a solution for destination marketers by providing them with targeted research based on needs and attitudes instead of demographics and purchase behaviors. There is a Demand for Collaboration The goal of Nicole and Susan’s study was to understand the industry-wide sentiment toward collaboration in travel and tourism. There were approximately 161 completed responses in the initial survey, providing enough data for the results to be statistically significant while offering a wide spectrum of attitudinal differences to compare with the results. The interesting thing about research is that it doesn’t always prove that you don’t know what you’re talking about—sometimes it has the opposite effect. This study reinforced the willingness to collaborate in all segments of the travel and tourism industry, with 76% of respondents having collaborated with direct competitors. What does this mean for you? It means there are an abundance of new opportunities to overcome challenges of the pandemic if you are willing to seek them out. This is huge for travel professionals from all walks of life. Our launch is near! We’ll be releasing our first episode this Thursday so stay tuned! Our very own Dua will be sharing her experiences of having married an emotionally abusive spouse. She discusses that divorce isn’t easy but your happiness matters more. Our motto is simple “If you have to stop being all of who you are to be half of a couple, the price is too high”.We explore the intricacies of divorce. A stigma that many women live with, but we’re here to offer hope. We’re here to remind you that your worth in society is not compromised by having a divorce (or two) under your belt. Quite the opposite really. And we explain why divorce may not necessarily be a bad thing. As times are changing, divorce rates have gone up in Muslim societies. There has been a cultural shift for women to no longer put up with domestic abuse as education and career advancement has become more accessible to millennial women. A recent generational focus on mental health and women getting married later in life as a result of their educational and career endeavours has given women more leverage to leave marriages that they couldn’t have otherwise. According to a study by the Cambridge University Press: Married Women's Economic Independence and Divorce in the Nineteenth- and Early-Twentieth-Century United States, “labor market opportunities explain divorce rates throughout US history. Attitudinal changes could have produced both higher labor force participation and marital instability, these changes are likely a function of economic development: As women engaged more with the labor”So what’s our point? A woman’s independence, happiness and freewill should never be compromised at the expense of her marriage. The price is simply too high.A healthy society does not have too low of a divorce rate or too high of a divorce rate. Rather it is assessed by a different metric; one of the most important measures of a society is how it treats its women. We invite any women who have been subject to emotional and physical abuse in their marriage or past marriage(s) looking for a voice onto our platform. We offer the respect to keep you anonymous if you wish.

Every successful business is built on empathic understanding of customers' preferences. As we know from the theories of Austrian economics, the preference scales of every individual are highly subjective, idiosyncratic, context-dependent, and highly changeable. How does an entrepreneur develop the appropriate level of understanding? Can this understanding be a source of business-building advantage? We talked with Trini Amador, a returning guest and an in-demand global branding and marketing consultant who has developed an effective process for every entrepreneur to achieve a breakthrough level of insight into customer motivations. Customers bond with businesses and brands they love and trust. The choices they make have their own internal logic. Entrepreneurs must develop insights into their motivations. Insights are the lifeblood of any brand- or business-owner, says Trini. Why do customers behave the way they do — especially in buying or not buying? Insights tell you. They become the difference between “just a business” and a brand that successfully delivers against the needs of their customers. Insights are the entrepreneur's understanding of customers' motivations, values and attitudes. They're the “Why” in why people act the way they do. Always emotional, always subjective. Entrepreneurs who understand “Why” can design stimulus or communication or innovation to motivate buying behavior. There's an insights generation process. It starts with identifying the people you wish to serve. Trini recommends a focus on your “core target” audience — not a general definition of who might buy, rather a highly specific profiling of your most likely and best prospects. Mark Packard, in episode #62, called them “high knowledge” customers. They know what they want, they know the category and they're precise about what experience is satisfactory and what is not. There is no shortage of data for you to utilize. Make sure you select the most important and useful data: Attitudinal data: how your customer feels, especially if they are expressing dissatisfaction; Behavioral data: behavior reveals preferences — “motivations are embedded in behaviors”. The best sources of data are first hand observation and one-on-one conversation. Organize your data in an insightful way. To avoid data overload (there's so much of it to collect!) Trini suggested couple of organizational techniques. One is visualization: build a visual profile of the customer with photos and notes indicating their hobbies, favorite brands, activities — visuals that depict their behavior and preferences. A second is personalization: write a composite profile as if it were one individual and use it as a “one perfect customer” persona. The objective is to change behaviors. Insight is the required key to unlock the possibility of doing so. Trini cited the example of his own wine brand from Sonoma County, California: Gracianna. For example, the objective may be to get people to visit the tasting room who have never visited before. That's a behavior change. Why do people behave the way they do? One inquiry tool is the 5 Why's, which is a way to examine the sequential rungs on the individual's means-ends ladder to identify their highest value, the motivation that is ultimately driving them. Trini used the example of why some people feel better about buying a Tesla than an alternative vehicle. Ultimately, they want to feel that they are better citizens of the planet. Trini entertainingly ascends the rungs of the ladder from “need a new car” and “get from A to B” to arrive at “the feeling of being a better citizen”. Using these tools, we arrive at a deep understanding of why customers make the choices they make — that is, an insight. The Insight feeds the Behavior Modification tool. The definitive “Why?” that emerges from the 5 Why's inquiry becomes the current state in the behavior modification tool. This tool has two components: Attitude Modification: behaviors are related to attitudes, and so to change an attitude can lead to a change in behavior. Attitude modification documents the FROM (the attitude we want to change) and the TO (the new attitude we want to encourage). Key Marketing Platform: a marketing platform is a staging point for all initiatives aimed at achieving the desired attitude among target customers: communication, promotion, innovation, distribution, relationship. Continuing the Tesla example, we want our prospective customer to feel that Tesla is the most progressive electric car that helps save the planet in the coolest, most prestigious ultra-premium way. If we can get them to feel that way, they'll buy. The entrepreneur imagines the future behavior, and then acts through the marketing platform to cultivate that motivation. How? Consider all resources that fall under the headings of communication, innovation, promotion, expanded distribution, and enhanced relationships. Experiment, experiment, experiment. Test, test, test. We'll discuss the techniques in a future episode of Economics For Entrepreneurs. Marketers know that the value of data from the past helps them strategize for the future. However, it may be time to gather data in a different and proactive way. Why not try an organic and mathematical approach? Today’s guest is Susan Baier of Audience Audit, a marketing research company. She describes how attitudinal research can be more effective than demographics research. Susan explains the difference between audience and customer research. Some of the highlights of the show include: Audience Audit: Attitudinal audience segmentation research that gains quantitative insight into audiences trying to be reached via marketing efforts Attitudinal Research: Understanding how opinions, assumptions, perspectives, and preconceived ideas affect purchase decisions Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research: Each offer value, including quantitative statistically significant insights of things affecting some of your audience Marketers need to answer ‘Why?’ by providing reliable data Audience Research: Only listening to customers, can create skewed perspective Who is your sample? Talk to past, present, and potential customers in the market to solve a problem that you understand Where to find your audience? Don’t rely on a single source; understand audience via email subscriber list, customer files, and social media platforms Why are people here? What kept them from getting help sooner? Focus on what problems your company’s products and services solve, not on what they do What does CMT stand for? Write compelling content using existing customers language/lingo to attract a similar audience What method(s) to use to gather research? Survey of connotative data; avoid pushing your assumptions that artificially stratify people and don’t make sense What doesn’t matter? 95% of studies that identify attitudinal segments reveal that company size, gender, household, and other factors aren’t important Crafting Questions: Remove bias from data gathering and analysis processes to improve product positioning, audience targeting, and personas Segmentation: Understand, implement, and use information/data Links: Audience Audit How To Do Remarkable Customer Research With Rand Fishkin From SparkToro [AMP081] Gartner Magic Quadrant Content Marketing Platform SurveyMonkey SurveyGizmo Qualtrics CoSchedule Marketing Software Suite

When considering musical artists, your favorite record of theirs is often the first to which you listened. It makes sense that the first album one encounters of a band will, over time, accumulate the most repeat listens. It has the chance to rack up plays before the listener explores the rest of the catalog. However, there might be more to this. Jeff and Anthony liked this study better after a few reads through. Yes, I really can be my own worst enemy. Yes, I can find myself in great spiritual darkness. God, however, knows when I have laid seige to my own life without a cause. God knows when I decide to turn on myself because sometimes self-reproach is what I desire. What triggers this behavior, or this journey into the Slough of Despond? God will not leave me to my own devices. He will come to me where I have abandoned myself because he loves me.
This episode of Pneumatikos will explore the inherent power of the doctrine of conformity to the image of Jesus. It is within this powerful doctrine that we discover a remarkable oasis of spiritual self- understanding that provides healing and hope for us in very unstable times. God has made us a new creation in Jesus, and this dynamic reality builds within the heart attitudinal wellness. Both inner and outward conflict become different for us when we are challenged to change our self-defeating thinking and a mere subjective orientation to our lives. We really do belong to God.
This episode of Pneumatikos will explore the necessity of the New Exodus event because the world today is upside down, manic, and drunk with demonic abandon. Sanity is a relic of the past, and culture has morphed into a species of madness that is no longer capable of self-reflection. The Road Less Traveled is all too real these days. The Striptease of Humanism has shown the world that it was threadbare all along. The religious claims of politics cannot heal the wounds of the culture. Only God can heal this nation that has lost its identity.
