Forts part 2 Mexican – Anglo Relations Welcome to the Hidden History of Texas. This is Episode 47 – Mexican Anglo Relations - I'm your host and guide Hank Wilson. And as always, brought to you by Ashby Navis and Tennyson Media Publishers, producers of a comprehensive catalog of audiobooks and high-quality games, productivity, and mental health apps. Visit AshbyNavis.com for more information. Relations between the Anglo settlers and Mexicans or Tejanos (Tejanos are those of Mexican or Spanish decent who were born in Texas, either when it was a province of Mexico or as a Republic) have almost always been strained. The Anglo settlers who immigrated into Texas were primarily from the South and as such they carried with them all of their innate prejudices. While some of the earliest settlers did learn to adapt to a Spanish way of life and to live in peace with their Mexican neighbors, many of the newcomers had no such desire. One area of conflict concerned itself with the issue of slavery. Mexico began to restrict slavery during the 1820s and finally completely outlawed it in 1829. However, the Mexican government exempted Texas from this law in order to appease Anglos. Initially that didn't seem like very important because it is estimated that in 1825 there were only about 400 slaves in Texas. However, by 1835 and the real beginning of the battle for Texas independence it is believed that there were more than 5,000 slaves in the region. In 1836 after Texas won at the Battle of San Jacinto, and claimed to be an independent republic there was still trouble. Because there was no formal treaty solidifying Texas status as independent. Mexico refused to recognize Texas' independence and considered it a rebellious territory. The Mexican government believed that Santa Anna had no legal authority to sign the Treaties of Velasco while a prisoner, and that the Mexican government had no obligation to honor the agreements. Now because of that, there was the very real fear that Mexico would invade and try to take Texas back. Then when in 1837, Mexico abolished slavery, this time without any exceptions, the Anglo residents of Texas began to fear that their slaves would start to side with Mexico in any type of dispute. And since many of the Anglos already distrusted the Mexican people in the state as the Texas Republic took shape, officials placed more and more obstacles before the non-Anglo population. For example, In the world of politics, Anglo leaders excluded Tejanos from almost every type of meaningful political participation. For example, Juan Seguín, one of the most influential Tejano political leaders, an Alamo defender, and who played an important role in the development of the Republic, and who fought for and stood side by side with those opposing Mexico and Santa Ana, was forced to flee to Mexico after a white mob chased him out of San Antonio. When it came to education, well Texas wasn't big on public schools as a way of insuring equality. In fact, from 1836 to 1900 private individuals, such as the Catholic Church, Protestant groups, and public officials all regarded schools as critical to preserving the social order. They saw them not only as ways to increase literacy, but also as vehicles to perpetuate existing class, sex, and ethnic roles. After Texas became a state, Mexican children often had no access to public schools. As the decades passed, that began to slowly change and by the 1880s the children did increasingly have access to rural schools. By the 1890s Mexican working-class children in urban areas were admitted to city schools. In both cases access was limited to segregated classes in the elementary grades. No secondary or postsecondary facilities were available to them. Only the children of wealthy families attended colleges and universities. The decision to segregate elementary schools in Texas was due to racial prejudice, residential location,
After Texas' resounding 31-12 road win at No. 9 Michigan, the Longhorns are trending like a national championship contender early in the season. With Texas returning home for a date with UTSA, Longhorn legend Alex Okafor joins columnist Cedric Golden for Episode 343 of the On Second Thought podcast and discusses why the Horns are off to such a fast start and what has to happen between now and the SEC opener against Mississippi State in three games to keep the team improving. Ced also discusses what coach Steve Sarkisian did to keep the Horns focused one week after a massive upset that rocked the college football world.
After Texas passed a six-week abortion ban and Roe v. Wade was overturned, many abortion clinics had to close in the Lone Star state. Some providers considered opening clinics in eastern New Mexico, so that they could keep providing services to women from Texas and other states where abortion is banned. But some neighbors in eastern New Mexico were not so welcoming to this idea. In this episode of our continuing series “The Latino Factor: How We Vote,” we travel to eastern New Mexico to meet Latinas and Latinos who have mobilized politically for and against abortion in the region. We also learn about how the anti-abortion movement is trying to revive an obscure law from the 19th Century, the Comstock Act, to stop clinics from opening by passing local ordinances. Episode 40 - The Cherokee - the "Principal People" Conclusion Welcome to Episode 40 of the Hidden History of Texas, this episode concludes my discussion of the Cherokee. Before I get started, just a quick reminder that I have 3 audiobooks based on this series. You can find information about them at my website https://arctx.org. On the menu, under Digital Products -> Audiobooks. Check them out, thanks, Now back to the Cherokee. Ever since Europeans had landed on the continent, the Cherokee had done their best to coexist. Unfortunately, their desire to live in peace on their ancestral lands conflicted with the new settlers desire to own that same land. As a result, they were forced off their land and as I mentioned in the last episode they arrived in what is now East Texas where they lived in relative peace for a few years. They did their best to maintain neutrality when conflict started between the Anglo Texans and the Mexican Government. After Texas achieved independence in 1836, Texas Republic President Sam Houston was a strong advocate for peace with all Texas tribes. He spent many hours working to keep the Cherokees as allies as he tried to negotiate treaties with the Apache, Comanche, and the Kiowa. This even included the Cherokees agreeing in 1836 to send a company of 25 rangers to help patrol the land west of their settlements. In 1837 Cherokee leader Duwali agreed to be the republic's emissary to the Comanches. However, in 1838 relations began to fall apart after a raid on settlers in East Texas was blamed on a combined Cherokee and Mexican force. As he was getting ready to leave office, Houston once again tried to keep the peace between Texans and the Cherokees. He established a boundary that could have served as a boundary separating the groups. This line upset the Anglos who wanted the land and who believed the Cherokees were actually allies of the Mexicans. Mirabeau B. Lamar who took Houston's place as Republic President was an ardent foe of the Cherokees and wanted them completely out of Texas. He initiated his campaign of elimination by sending troops to the Neches Saline (a small community in East Texas). When Chief Duwali had his people block the Texans and in response Lamar told the chief that the Cherokee would be relocated beyond the red river. His words to the chief were, "peaceably if they would; forcibly if they must." Lamar then put together a commission who were told they could compensate the Cherokees if they left their land. The Cherokees said no, and the result was what is known as the Cherokee War. The war, although it was really more of a pitched battle took place in the summer of 1839. That was when Chief Duwali led several hundred of his warriors in a fight that took place near present day Tyler Texas. The result was a disaster for the Cherokee as more than a 100 warriors including the chief were killed. The Texans then drove the remaining Cherokees across the Red River into what was then labeled Indian Territory. Not all Cherokee were exiled to the territory, some stayed and lived as fugitives in Texas and still others moved into Mexico. There were some Cherokee who conducted raids and fought for their lands, but they had little to no success. In 1841 Sam Houston was elected to another term as president and he instituted a policy that he thought would help end future hostilities between the tribes and the settlers. This policy gave two treaties with the Cherokees who remained in Texas in 1843 and 1844. After the Cherokees who had been moved north of the Red River they were able to reunite with the much larger group of Cherokee who had been settled in the northeastern corner of the territory. In 1846, the Cherokee signed an agreement with the U.S. that specified that all the Cherokee, those from Texas and those who were already in the Territory had equal rights to the lands of the Cherokee nation. This union lasted until the Civil War.
THE U.S. GOVERNMENT is in a legal standoff with the state of Texas over control of the border with Mexico. After Texas refused to comply with a Supreme Court ruling to allow Border Patrol agents to a park in Eagle Pass, the White House announced a freeze on the sale of liquefied natural gas, which amounts to economic sanctions on Texas—but it also threatens the energy security of our NATO allies in Europe, which have replaced some of the natural gas it imported from Russia with LNG from the US. Also: Yemen effectively blockades Suez Canal (except to Russian and Chinese shipping); Türkiye drops opposition to Sweden in NATO (and gets new F-16s); US federal debt growing faster than GDP; and the influence of Inanna and Molech. This past Tuesday, May 24, 2022, an 18 year-old walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas and shot and killed nineteen students and two teachers. Almost immediately, many around the country, and right here in Connecticut, began to draw comparisons to the December 14, 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Mariam Azeez was a first-grader in Newtown when her peers at Sandy Hook Elementary were killed. Now, Mariam is 15 years old. She is an outspoken activist, a poet, and a sophomore at Danbury High School. On Thursday night, Mariam performed a powerful new poem at a vigil in Newtown, where residents and neighbors gathered in solidarity with the Uvalde, Texas community. During this episode of Mic Check, Mariam shares about her journey, her activism, and her poetry, and performs the piece she performed at the vigil for Uvalde at Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursday night. Then we give our thoughts on the 2021 season, what went wrong in the 2021 season for Texas, and what needs to happen for it to get fixed.
The Left continues to attack our culture, especially the American man. Playboy decided to have gay Filipino social media influencer Bretman Rock as the new digital cover Playboy bunny. Has Playboy forgotten who buys the magazine? Is this too woke? Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is going around with his apology tour, and this time he's apologizing for a “subtle sexual aspect” between a bee and a human in “Bee Movie.” Do people really care? After Texas passed the “abortion ban” law, many actors have come out against this law. Actress Jennifer Lawrence, who is currently pregnant, was seen with Amy Schumer advocating for the right to kill unborn children. Can you see how the Left continues to attack our values? When we talk about abortion access in the U.S., we talk a lot about Roe v. Wade, the actions of state lawmakers, the court system. But we don't talk about doctors — and what they do or don't say to patients behind closed doors. Read more:After Texas passed the country's most restrictive abortion law, many abortion rights advocates feared that other states would follow suit — states like West Virginia that have already made moves in the past to restrict access to abortion. But reporter Caroline Kitchener has found that there are other barriers to abortion already in place, some of which are invisible to us: “I had never even thought about this other barrier that is doctors,” Caroline said. “Doctors who might not talk to women about the option of abortion.” Caroline has spent many, many months reporting on Byron Calhoun, the only high-risk pregnancy OB/GYN in central West Virginia. He also happens to be staunchly antiabortion. Today on “Post Reports,” we talk about what that means for his patients — and, more broadly, how doctors' political beliefs can affect the kind of care they provide their patients.
I asked, and you answered. After Texas passed its Heartbeat Law, I asked people to share their stories about abortion. I felt as though no one had given space to the very people this law seemed to affect. I wanted to expose the arguments people give for denying a person autonomy over their body by using your stories to surround and crush those fragile arguments. Your stories are valid, raw, and unapologetic. Thank you for being courageous and sharing them with me. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heather-stark4/support
After Texas made it illegal for abortions to take place after a certain "time" the liberals and women everywhere have been up in arms. Emma however being pro-choice is up in arms too, she's extremely heated because abortion doesn't even need to happen if we are responsible for the absolute most part. Instead we made bad choices, the baby suffers who is innocent, and the abortion can be subsidized by the government so the woman doesn't have to pay... making it her responsibility to pay for and everyone else. So why is that fair to people that are anti-abortion. IT"S NOT and she's fired up. She has no problem with someone aborting a baby, but do it on their own dime and if you make better choices it shouldn't even come to that. Our own desires put in that situation for the most part and the baby suffers. There are exceptions, she covers Roe vs. Wade and what are the ONLY exceptions for an abortion according to the law. It's gonna get hot, she speaks her mind unabridged, she points fingers at everyone and makes us all responsible - but she will still fight for your choice and love and not judge as long as you use your own funds.

After Texas went 1-2 in the opening series against the Royals, one thing is clear: they are who we thought they were. Twenty-one runs in three games undone by creatively demoralizing pitching. But! The trio of Mike, Max, and Hayden believe there are many reasons to watch the Rangers this season, and two of ‘em are starting games against Toronto this week. *Before we jump into today’s newsletter, Texas is in a really bad place right now and a lot of people need help. Check this Twitter thread for a list of organizations to consider donating to.*My Apple Watch probably thinks I'm dead.I haven't worn it since Sunday, when the snow and the frigid temperatures hit Texas like we all knew would happen but seemingly without a clue what would happen next. And also, that's a lie. I haven't worn my Apple Watch, but Apple (of course) has tracked me the entire time through my iPhone and AirPods and Macbooks. Our power, for some reason, hasn't gone out yet. Everything is fully charged.I primarily use my Apple Watch as a daily activity tracker, but since the streets and outdoors have been rendered useless and the temperatures have remained low, I haven’t worn it. No worries! We'll be back to highs in the 60s, come Sunday!Sunday is just three days away of course; the people of Texas are more than halfway through the worst of the weather and past the zero degree nights. The snow will be fully melted by Saturday. And yet we won't yet know the physical, economic, and psychological damage done nor will the damage be fixed for quite some time.I'll admit that last week I had a cavalier, smug Northern outlook when predictions of multiple winter storms and days of freezing conditions hit the news. Surely those in charge would be on top of it all if, indeed, something more catastrophic was coming our way. This is me admitting my ignorance. What I failed to realize is how the buildings here are built to let heat out. Our heating and cooling systems are optimized for summers. That so many people, through no fault of their own, didn't know how to protect their pipes and water (and in a lot of cases, even that wouldn't matter).Texas has its own power grid, where as the rest of the contiguous states were split into two grids. Why? Because Texas just can’t stand the federal government. And so if that grid goes down, well, it's on Texas to make it right. And if Texas energy can't make it right, then what? Well, here we are: Texas' predominantly fossil-fuel energy system is basically frozen. Millions now suffer for days in weather, and a situation, they've never experienced and didn't have to experience so drastically. This one story in the Dallas Morning News alone highlights that:People are dying in fires caused by trying to stay warmPeoples are dying from or going to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning, after they sit in warm cars in their garage, or use their stove for heatBurst residential pipes are wreaking havoc in homes across the stateSome cities are telling residents to stop using water. Here's an actual quote from a city official in a city of 45,000 people: "Water should only be used to sustain life at this point"Other cities are asking residents to boil their water before drinkingFirefighters are watching houses burn because there isn't enough water pressure for their hosesHow grim is that? How brutally unfair is that? The policymakers, state leaders, and this whole fear-of-regulation system they set up has turned Texas into an unprecedented disaster in the middle of an unprecedented disaster. Gov. Greg Abbot, ERCOT (the organization that operates the grid), Republican lawmakers, and Texas' energy industry created a Russian nesting-doll of suffering and death. This, after Republicans at the federal level created just a Macy's parade-sized doll of suffering of death with the coronavirus response.Could they have prevented the storm? Obviously not. But the lack of communication, preparation, support, and resources they gave to the people of Texas leading up to this is unconscionable. Except this is by design. This is what fierce de-regulation and platitudes of freedom and liberty get you. Sometimes they might sound innocuous on a rainy day. But in a true climate emergency—that they saw coming, for weeks—it becomes cruel and deadly. Only then will the feign interest in people. The freedom defenders will posit that individuals should know better, prepare better, and make accommodations for themselves. Which is to say: they don't care about you. This is not an anomaly in their system. This is the system. This entire political, economic, and physical infrastructure is designed this way. After Texas had a massive winter storm with blackouts in 2011, the federal government strongly recommended weather-proofing our power infrastructure. But Texas, beholden to nobody, moved forward like nothing happened. And here we are. It happened again. Only worse. And lest you think I'm "playing politics" in the middle of an emergency, spare me. Determining who and what is responsible for a calamity is not playing politics. It just so happens that at every step of the way, one political side and one industry made the decisions and the infrastructure that got us here. I won't dig into how confident I am that current leadership "on the other side of the aisle" will be able to make systemic changes, but you can probably guess that.Unfortunately, this is very much a "welcome to Texas" moment for me. I've only been here for four-and-a-half years. Lifelong residents, of course, know the red politics and oil-driven laissez-faire economics of the state. I suppose my living in Dallas instead of a place like Fort Worth, for example, somehow planted the seed in my head that somehow, some way, given a scenario like what happened this week, the outcomes would be different. But now that's hard to believe in the middle of incalculable suffering that seems to only be accelerating in lieu of systemic change at the federal and state level. Our most vulnerable people are becoming more vulnerable. Our climate more unpredictable and destructive. Some are content merely watching how it plays out, with privilege. Others are fighting, sometimes out of necessity, life or death. For racial justice. For equal treatment. For equal pay. But the oppressed alone can't—and shouldn't—be responsible for overturning an oppressive system.I don't think I have a moral to today's story. I sat down to write about how I haven't used my Apple Watch in days and I was somehow going to connect that to technology and culture and what that meant, and the general topics of this newsletter. Oh, and then how I wanted to go on a run. And that in just a few days, this snow and this freezing weather will be gone. A week of frigid destruction followed by highs in the 60s.But maybe that's the point. Cruel politics, cruel policy, and power-for-power's sake can impact communities and nations with a slow burn temperatures ebb-and-flow over years and decades and centuries. They can also incite a raging fire.In the end, they destroy. The current pace is accelerating. It's happening on our watch. Get full access to Greg's Newsletter at greg.substack.com/subscribe
President Biden and his Shadow advisors have lost no time in issuing a large number of Executive Orders to enforce their progressive agenda after vowing not to during the Presidential campaign. Orders such as the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline is hard to justify on any grounds. Others affecting border security and deportation of Illegal aliens including criminals, threatens domestic safety and security and will certainly create chaos. Former acting homeland security secretary Chad Wolf says the Biden immigration action goes against the law. Today a federal judge temporarily blocked Biden's attempt to put a moratorium on deportations for 100 days. After Texas sued over the policy, the judge blocked Biden, via a temporary restraining order, from moving forward for 14 days. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer thinks President Biden should declare the climate change crisis an emergency so he can “do many things under the emergency powers - without legislation”. The Biden administration has taken aim at the energy sector. What other sectors are on notice for job losses? We talk to Blake Christian a national Top 25 OZ influencer, and tax partner at HCVT LLP in Long Beach, California, and Park City, Utah. Blake has over 35 years of experience providing tax consulting and compliance services to multinationals, publicly traded corporations and owner-managed businesses. Blake's industry experience is broad and includes manufacturing and distribution, service companies, restaurant, shipping and transportation, energy and health care. And have we uncovered the real Chuck Schumer.
Land feuds are among the oldest conflict known to mankind. The right to say "I am in charge here" is not earned easily. It is often bought with blood and tears. In the 1800s, there was a piece of land in Texas called the Neutral Ground. After Texas became a state, the name faded away, but its legacy remained. A place where bandits and bad men hid out and preyed on settlers, this dark place among the pines was fierce and untamed. Some men rose up and tried to settle it but they were carried away by the lust for power. Others rose up to staunch the flow of violence and the result was only more bloodshed. Tune into this episode of the Nowhere Dispatch to learn about the largest land feud in the nation's history, one that surpassed even the Hatfields and the McCoys. This is the story of the Regulator-Moderator War, also known as the Shelby County War of the 1840s, a strange tale that left a bitter legacy.
