Welcome to the Monday Breakfast show for Monday October 28th, 2024.  Last week, Eric spoke with Myles Russell-Cook about Reko Rennie's REKOSPECTIVE exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia in Fed Square. The pair spoke about the exhibition, the importance of platforming Indigenous artists, toxic masculinity as well as art being inherently political.  This Saturday, there was an anti-military rally on the Geelong waterfront organised by IPAN Geelong & Vic Southwest, and Elbit out of Vic (an initiative of Free Palestine Coalition Naarm), denouncing the push by ALL levels of Government to make Geelong a Military hub under the guise of 'job creation'. We will now hear from Zelda Grimshaw, an antimilitarist organiser with 'Wage Peace/Disrupt Wars' and a core organiser at the recent Disrupt Land Forces mobilisation. Zelda zooms out to discuss links between militarism and climate collapse from a decolonial perspective - bringing us the personal story of Wity Unue, a young man from the highlands of West Papua. The speech mentions an article about Wity's story, which includes the video of him singing with his friends prior to his murder.  [CW* This segment makes mention of military violence].  On Wednesday of last week around 300 workers from the Qantas Engineers Alliance, a coalition of workers from the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, the Electrical Trades Union, and the Australian Workers Union, walked off the job for 24 hours. The strike is part of industrial action that the Qantas Engingeers' Alliance has been taking for weeks and was a response to Qantas' refusal to discuss a new enterprise agreement with the alliance. The current enterprise agreement expirence at the end of June; the alliance is asking for a 5 per cent per year pay rise as well as a 13.5 per cent first-year increase to compensate for three and a half years of wage freezes and to align wage levels with elsewhere in the industry. To talk about the action and the wider campaign for better conditions and wages for workers in the Qantas Engineers' Alliance, Rob spoke with Michael Wright, National Secretary of the ETU on Friday. NSW Police have conducted almost 900 strip searches at train stations since 2016, data released by Redfern Legal Centre last week has revealed. Of the 883 strip searches conducted, a disproportionate number were conducted on First Nations people, making up 9% of all searches. A total of 66 searches involved children aged between 10 and 17. To speak more about the data and the legality of the searches, Rob spoke with Sam Lee, supervising solicitor at Redfern Legal Centre. A class action filed by Inner Melbourne Community Legal launches today to find answers about why the Victorian Government made its decision to 'retire and redevelop' 44 public housing buildings across the state. Lead plaintiff Barry Berih argues that the Victorian Government did not properly consider the human rights of residents when making its decision to demolish the towers. To find out more about the class action Rob interviewed Harry Millward, General Secretary of the Renters and Housing Union. The class action will be taking place today and tomorrow at the Supreme Court on Lonsdale St, with the residents requesting for Community Members to come down in support if possible. You can also find out more at imcl.org.au ; and listen back to the last episode of Raise The Roof on the 3CR website, which presented voices of affected older residents. Raise the Roof is hosted by the Housing for the Aged Action Group, and you can find that previous show at 3cr.org.au/HAAG.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Monday Breakfast show.  Winner of the best short film at the recent Melbourne Documentary Film Festival director Matt Deavin talks to Annie McLoughlin of the Solidarity Breakfast show about Making Revisions. The Walpiri community collaborate with British artist Patrick Waterhouse as they look over colonial documents and artworks and how history was written under a European gaze. In this collaboration, they look to revise the story that was told. The interview originally aired on Saturday the 21st of September's Solidarity Breakfast show. Listen to the full episode here or catch the show live on Saturdays from 7:30 to 9AM. On Wednesday 11th Sept, Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) hosted a roundtable at Victorian Parliament in which Ministers, housing experts, and people with lived experience of the housing crisis came together. We hear some troubling housing trends presented by Professor Wendy Stone from Swinburne University, in a piece of research conducted by herself and colleagues, in conjunction with HAAG, Western Sydney University, and Curtin University. This paper is available on HAAG's website: oldertenants.org.au. Listen in to Tuesday Breakfast tomorrow morning for some of the firsthand accounts presented at this roundtable by older women and members of Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG), and listen in to their program this Wednesday (every 2nd and 4th of the month) on 3cr, from 5:30pm. Lucifer has faced forced marriage, conversion therapy, and imprisonment as a result of who they are. Rob spoke with Lucifer to hear more about their story as well as their experience settling here in Naarm following such trauma. Rob then spoke to Laura about the fundraiser itself as well as the community efforts to rally behind Lucifer in support of them. You can donate to Lucifer's fundraiser here or buy tickets to the event here. Finally Rob spoke to Flora, member of the Renters and Housing Union about the Federal Government's Build To Rent scheme as well as tax concessions to support it, which aims to allow corporate investors to invest in the renting market as a means of fixing the housing crisis. During the interview Rob and Flora unpack whether this approach will actually work. Join RAHU here. Songs played: Leave It All Behind - Charm of FinchesIt's You - Emily Wurramurra

It is a huge week in housing this week after the detention of 3,000 public housing tenants has been announced and enforced by police in Victoria.  Today Kevin and Meg kick off the show with an interview with Scott Stewart, a tenant from one of the 9 blocks in so-called "hard-lockdown", who is joined by Daniel Nair Dadich, Victorian Socialists Candidate for Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne. We discuss the online forum ("Public Housing Residents in Lockdown Speak Out"), co-hosted by Vic Socialists and Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, as well as Scott's lived experience in his Flemington high-rise flat. Next, we are joined by regular Shane McGrath from Housing for the Aged Action Group to chat about housing insecurity, anecdotes on a lack of real legal tenants protections, why there's no better time to join your union, and more. Lastly, we speak with Howard Marosi from Friends of Public Housing and Dr. Sam Lieblich, to take a look at housing insecurity as a direct cause for many psychiatric issues, classism, and how the immediate mobilisation and work of community-led organisations such as AMSSA have put DHHS to shame in supporting residents in the towers thus far.

We exist because we provide a service customers around Australia want. The whole business is based on giving people a fair go. For many people, renting these goods is the only way they can get them, since they don’t have the money to buy them outright and, for varying reasons, may not qualify for a loan. In this sense, it is no different from rental accommodation. Radio Rentals adheres fully to responsible lending guidelines, including all customers being provided a copy of the terms and conditions prior to installation. We have a strong code of ethics and we are very committed to protecting customers. Thorn holds an Australian Credit Licence and adheres to the responsible lending policy, which means that product costs are fully disclosed in contracts prior to signing and rigorous processes are in place to ensure we don’t commit people to payments they cannot afford.  When comparing pricing of Radio Rentals’ products with other household goods providers, it is important to incorporate risk and cost of credit as well as the fact that the goods are delivered, installed and serviced throughout the contract for free. Thorn also allows for a product downgrade or upgrade in case of change of circumstances."
