Robbie Rozelle is a beloved cabaret artist, director, producer, housewives aficionado, and my friend. He identifies as a Charles Nelson Reilly with a Paul Lynde Rising. And guess what?! We're going back to basics! Robbie joins me in person, in my living room, and we talk about his Hamilton experience as well as pretty much everything else. As a kid, Robbie fell in love with classic movie musicals (The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Annie (1982 ONLY), Bye Bye Birdie, Damn Yankees) and became transfixed. By the time he was cast as Scarecrow his freshman year of high school he knew he was going to be a performer. As a young gay kid in the middle of the AIDS crisis, Robbie found hope, joy, and a sense of belonging in theatre, which is why he's made it his life goal to preserve musicals through producing cast and artist albums. This week, Robbie talks about his journey to New York City by way of upstate New York with a quick stop in Pennsylvania, how he became the Creative Director of Playbill, his transition to Center Stage Records, and how wise words from Jan Maxwell led to his "second life" as a cabaret icon. Composer Jerry Herman (Composer and lyricist; born July 10, 1931, in New York City) It only takes a moment to realize that Broadway's Golden Age is alive and well and thriving as long as Jerry Herman's around. "When they passed out talent," the legendary Carol Channing has said, "Jerry stood in line twice." Almost single-handedly, the creator of Milk and Honey, Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage aux Folles and so much more has revitalized and nourished the all-American tradition of great and unstoppable show tunes. His music and lyrics have kept audiences tapping their feet, humming along, and wiping their eyes with tears of joy for generations. Even as often he's been underrated as being too easy to like in a world of dark and foreboding musicals, too entertaining, too tuneful and much too upbeat, the genius of Herman's deceptively simple songs cuts through any shortsighted criticism. "Jerry has succeeded so well in his mission that people don't give him credit," said Michael Feinstein, "because to be simple without being cliche is nearly impossible." Herman's genius, in truth, is not so much simple as it is subtle. For all his cock-eyed optimism-and very much in the tradition of his forefathers Rodgers and Hammerstein-a Herman musical always carries a message of timeless values, of humanity's triumph over hatred and ignorance, of happiness over despair. 1983's La Cage aux Folles, a smash hit on Broadway and a Tony Award winner in all three of its Broadway productions-and counting-is not only a bona fide crowd-pleaser but also the most sweetly radical musical of its age. Here on the Broadway stage, decades before the fight for marriage equality hit the headlines, was a pair of gay dads raising a family, and here was "...a man singing a love song to another man-I don't think that's ever been done in a Broadway musical before." Herman told The Washington Post that during previews in Boston "I didn't know whether or not they'd throw stones. The audience gave it an ovation." "By the time Georges and Albin-having weathered a son's passing ingratitude and a zealot's intolerance-walked hand in hand into the St. Tropez sunset, the audience was on its feet," The Washington Post reported. "What La Cage aux Folles celebrates, after all, is loyalty and love, respect for others and respect for self and, yes, even family. The good old values." Gerald Herman was born in New York in 1931 and raised in Jersey City. His parents Harry and Ruth ran a children's summer camp in the Catskills, where young Jerry surprised everyone by teaching himself the piano. Once, he recalled years later, "my parents took me at a tender age to see Annie Get Your Gun, and I was absolutely dazzled. I have one of those retentive ears, and when I came home I sat down at the piano and played about five of the songs. My mother was amazed." Many more would be amazed. At 17, he was introduced to Frank Loesser, who encouraged him to continue composing once he heard some of Herman's songs. He went to the University of Miami, joining its adventurous theater program and himself appearing in undergraduate shows including the musical Finian's Rainbow. His alma mater since then has honored this distinguished alumnus and today boasts the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the heart of its drama program. After graduation from Miami, Herman headed back to New York and put together a review of his songs so far: I Feel Wonderful opened at the Theatre de Lys in Greenwich Village October 18, 1954 and ran for 48 performances. He was just getting going. While playing piano in a New York jazz club called the Showplace, Herman brought together his friends Phyllis Newman and Charles Nelson Reilly for another review called Nightcap, which opened in 1958. This one ran for two years. In 1960 came Herman's Broadway debut, alongside material by Fred Ebb and Woody Allen, in the review From A to Z. That same year came Parade, also at the Showplace, starring Reilly and Dody Goodman. A hit, Parade moved to the Players' Theatre and it was during this run that a producer asked Herman if he would be interested in writing a musical about the founding of the state of Israel. Milk and Honey, starring Molly Picon as the ultimate Hadassah lady, opened in 1961. It earned Herman his first Tony nomination for Best Musical of 1962. He had arrived. It was David Merrick who brought together Herman and the first of his vulnerable but ultimately invincible heroines, Dolly Levi. Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing opened in 1964, ran for 2,844 performances, became Broadway's longest-running musical and has been revived often since. It swept the Tony Awards, taking home a then unmatched 10 including Best Musical and becoming one of the happiest episodes in the history of the Broadway musical. Mame followed in 1966, starring Angela Lansbury and teaching the world that in the toughest times "We Need a Little Christmas." What has followed amounts to a life-affirming body of work rivaled by few: Dear World, the underappreciated Mack Mabel, The Grand Tour, Mrs. Santa Claus, Jerry's Girls, and of course La Cage aux Folles. The theater world knew a good thing when it heard and saw it: Tonys, Drama Desk Awards, Theatre World Awards all followed, as did a 2009 Special Tony Award for Lifetime achievement, and a 2010 Drama Desk Special Award for "enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century." Right now in the 21st Century, we can be sure that someone, somewhere is singing a Jerry Herman song. That's one happy way we know the man's been right all along: the best of times is now.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to actor Christopher Murray, who we find out, was quite literally born into show business. From both his maternal and paternal grandparents as well as both of his parents, Christopher likely couldn't have escaped a career in front of the camera if he tried. So who are his parents? Well, both are Oscar nominated and his mother is a two-time Emmy award winner. Can you guess? None other than actors Don Murray & Hope Lange. Between his parents, they have starred in films and TV productions with Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Robert Wagner, Charles Laughton, Roddy McDowell, Michelle Lee, Kathleen Turner, Joan Crawford, Glenn Ford, Suzy Parker and more. And if that isn't enough, his stepfather was a giant of a director, Alan J. Pakula who directed some of the best films of the 70s as well. Our time with Christopher was more a conversation than an interview and frankly, those are the ones we love best on this podcast. We jumped around a lot but the connections were never more apparent than when we were discussing how it is that Charles Nelson Reilly spent so much time at his house. We delved into just about everything with Christopher to the story of how his parents helped displaced European war refugees from WWII & the Korean War that still functions to this day as well as the fabulous dinner parties his mother gave that were a safe haven for gay Hollywood couples in an era when things like that were very rare. This conversation that spans the stage, film and television and involves everyone from Hubert H. Humphrey to Eleanor Roosevelt, Sean Connery to Ed Harris & Freddy Kruger to Don Deer. But to hear all of those stories, we had to spread this episode into two parts – there was just too much great stuff to cut out. You'll have to take a listen to this episode, part one, of the Rarified Heir Podcast to begin this verbal scavenger hunt. Everyone has a story.
Back on March 1, 2012, I got a Tweet from Patricia Tallman saying that she would like to discuss her new book "Pleasure Threshold" on "The Zone". I'm a sucker for a redhead, so I said yes. Of course. Patricia is a stunt woman, a mother, author and actor in everything from Star Trek - "The Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" to playing "Lyta Alexander" in the Hugo Award winning series "Babylon 5" where she just announced that she is currently writing the pilot for a REBOOT of "Babylon 5". She also played "Barbara" in the best remake of George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" 1990. She is a very close friend, my newly adopted sister and surprisingly wonderful interview. Joining me is my best friend and the most best'es wife ever that has been, Joan. The interview is 19:04. Wrapped with "Babylon 5" music & audio with a hint of "Charles Nelson Reilly" (Patricia Tallman's true to life mentor). I hope you enjoy our interview with Patricia Tallman. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thezonewithtimmmccoy/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thezonewithtimmmccoy/support

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for another TV retrospective. Joining them is Digital Trends Editor Allison Lips as they talk about Match Game ‘73. Match Game ‘73 (retitled for every new year) is the first revival of the 1960s game show The Match Game. The show premiered on CBS in 1973. Though CBS canceled the show in 1979, a new syndicated version premiered later the same year and ran until 1982. On the show, contestants attempt to match a panel of celebrities' answers to humorous questions. Regular panelists include Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly, and most notably Betty White, who appeared on the old Match Game. Original host Gene Rayburn also returned. Match Game has seen more revivals since the 1970s, the last of which was hosted by Alec Baldwin and ended in 2021. Aaron, Josh, and Allison briefly look at the ‘60s version before going into ‘70s iteration and its unique humor. They also discuss game shows in today's TV landscape. For another podcast with Allison, you can listen to them chat about Bill Nye the Science Guy. “Gabby has fired you”. For many people, being fired as the assistant to a Dog may have ended their career. But not the guest on this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar. Writer, actor, TV therapist and big winner on Scrabble Terry Ray talks with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence.Terry has gone on to write 11 TV Movies, an award-winning short Film and the longest running play in Palm Springs. That play, Electricity, will be moving off-Broadway in the very near future. Terry's career seems to have been one story after another (all of them, except with Gabby, very successful). Honestly, do any others have stories of meeting with Batman while he was getting ready and still in his tighty-whities? Terry has Patrick and Randy gasping for air as he tells more about his days as a student of Charles Nelson Reilly, writing a show that starred Loni Anderson and doing TV therapy for some of the most iconic characters in TV (think Eddie Munster, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island, Isaac from the Love Boat). You'll become a huge fan of Terry's after listening to his infectious and hilarious personality!

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we teach you many life lessons in this very special compilation. First, three years after the end of Full House and nearing the end of the original TGIF lineup, ABC brought back The Olsen Twins as tweens in this one-season vehicle, whose legacy lasted well beyond its one year. Then, did you ever notice some people have some shows essentially omitted from their resumes? We had never heard about Charles Nelson Reilly on Uncle Croc's Block until Mike went down a rabbit hole one night. And after seeing this and its associated cartoons, you can't blame CNR from forgetting this misstep. Finally, we watch a very special episode that we have referred to on and off throughout the podcast. Find out why drugs are bad when Robbie gets hooked on thornoids on Dinosaurs. Mike and I grew up watching the Munsters on TV (like alot of people our age) so this was such a great thing for us to be able to talk to Butch Patrick for the podcast and a great way to kick off the new Munsters Movie coming out September 27th on Netflix. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BUTCH PATRICK: Butch Patrick (born Patrick Alan Lilley; August 2, 1953) is an American former child actor. Beginning his professional acting career at the age of seven, Patrick is perhaps best known for his role as child werewolf Eddie Munster on the CBS comedy television series The Munsters from 1964 to 1966 and in the 1966 feature film Munster, Go Home!, and as Mark on the ABC Saturday morning series Lidsville from 1971 to 1973. After The Munsters ended, Patrick continued to appear in guest-starring roles on various popular television series of the 1960s, including I Dream of Jeannie, Death Valley Days, Gunsmoke, The Monkees, Daniel Boone, and Adam-12, as well as a recurring role as Gordon Dearing on the CBS family comedy series My Three Sons. During this time, Patrick also appeared in several Walt Disney films, including Way Down Cellar, The Young Loner and The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, as well as portraying the role of Milo in the 1970 MGM live-action/animated film The Phantom Tollbooth. In 1971, Patrick landed the starring role on Sid and Marty Krofft's Saturday morning children's program Lidsville, broadcast on ABC. In the psychedelic fantasy series, Patrick portrayed Mark, a boy lost in a strange land of walking, talking, singing hats, opposite veteran character actors Charles Nelson Reilly and Billie Hayes. The show was in production from 1971 to 1973. Butch can be heard in the new Rob Zombie Munsters movie as "the tin can man". ************* COPYRIGHT CLAIM: Eddie & the Monsters song "Whatever Happened to Eddie used with permission from Butch Patrick. ************* Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Nothing like a kid's movie about the forced sexual pressure put on actresses. Also, don't make the kid with the adorable speech impediment try to say "Chanticleer" 1000 times. How will Rock-A-Doodle hold up? Host: Nic Panel: Matthew and Daniel Directed by: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, Dan Kuenster Starring: Glen Campbell, Christopher Plummer, Phil Harris, Eddie Deezen, Toby Ganger, Charles Nelson Reilly

Things are extra tuneful on this week's new episode! Jim, James, and Gerald all face off for pop culture games and trivia that really test their musical minds. A cello-themed round of My Champion gives way to a round one filled with some unexpected movie-singing (though some of these examples are VERY expected if you have been tracking the types of movies Taylor likes to put in games). Gears shift in round two where players try to un-confuse pop culture properties that each have characters who share a first name. And as always, it's not over until everyone gets a crack at the lightning round! NOTES ⚠️ Inline notes below may be truncated due to podcast feed character limits. Between 2 Butts: The Podcast That Lets Nothing Slip Between The Cracks
We open in crisis mode, as the Between 2 Butts crew's beloved satellite member Echo may have asthma. Still, Becca switches on her tiny kitty-sized humidified and carries on as we catch up with Tice and Jay's old improv buddy Matt McDermott. Matt takes us all the way back to "Klinkenschnell, the Christmas Bell", his acting debut at age 12. Then it's on to his transition into the tech world and some mechanical misfires in a Titanic play. We then reminisce about his time in ComedySportz Improv, and his present-day activities of swing dancing, professional photography, teaching improv, and keeping a menagerie of animals in his home! Finally, we try to Make a Match together as Tice pulls out his best Charles Nelson Reilly impression in aid of an extremely time-sensitive joke.
Comedian, musician and multiple Grammy winner "Weird Al" Yankovic returns to the show to talk to Gilbert and Frank about the influence of Mad magazine, the golden age of Top 40 radio, the reclusiveness of Tom Lehrer, the cultural importance of "Word Crimes" and the mystifying longevity of "The Joe Franklin Show." Also, Little Richard buys a vowel, Al and Coolio bury the hatchet, Jerry Lewis tries to take over "Comic Relief" and Charles Nelson Reilly makes "sweet, sweet love" to a manatee. PLUS: Pat Boone! "The Rutles"! Remembering Frank Jacobs! The wit and wisdom of Shel Silverstein! The rise and fall of Allan Sherman! And Al narrates the Tiny Tim documentary! Learn more about your ad choices. It is an adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel The Wind in the Willows. Set in a pastoral version of England, the film focuses on four anthropomorphized animal characters (Moley, Ratty, Mr. Toad, and Mr. Badger) and contains themes of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The film features the voices of Charles Nelson Reilly, Roddy McDowall, José Ferrer, and Eddie Bracken. The screenplay was written by Romeo Muller. 1 The music for this episode is Simpler Times by Man DeLorean. 1 Wikipedia
It's 1944, it's Hartford Connecticut and this may be the most horrible episode we've ever done. In what grisled old circus types are already calling the Greatest Podcast on Earth, join Phil Jerrod and Phil Lucas as they discuss the truly terrible Hartford Circus Fire - the awesome conflagration that descended on the good people of Connecticut one beautiful summers day in July. Should they have used petrol to waterproof the tent. Nope. No. Absolutely not. TRIGGER WARNING. This is a bad one, and it gave both of us a bit of a shock. Seriously, one of the worst. So proceed with caution. It involves children being burned alive. Sandy does her mentor Charles Nelson Reilly proud by nailing her audition for a horror movie and booking the part. Naturally, her friends and neighbours are thrilled for her, but when she has to blow off their surprise party for a networking bash in the Hollywood Hills, everyone starts being a little less thrilled for her. Sandy's own excitement starts to ebb when she gets to the set and finds out the director wants to shoot her topless. Billy realizes he can't blow off his father's birthday party, largely because his sisters already decided to, so he tries to minimize the hassle his dad is going to give him about his career by bringing Alison (though he's also kind of forced to given that he's told his parents she's his girlfriend). Instead of standing firm with his father about pursuing his writing, Billy decides to honour the deal they'd made, and spend a year working in the family furniture store, though maybe his father wouldn't have pushed it if he'd known Billy planned to bitch about it the whole time. Speaking of furniture: Michael injures himself trying to move a dresser, and overestimates his ability to use his body while it's injured, finally admitting to Jane that he's trying to keep her from having to exert herself in any way during her pregnancy. We'll discuss more, much more than this, in our podcast on "My Way"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB
