My views on the 67th Annual Grammys.
First, Phil and David recap the 67th Annual Grammys with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes who gave the uplifting opening performance of Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." with his brother Griffin Goldsmith and an all-star band of Grammy winners, including past "Naked Lunch" guests Brad Paisley and Sheryl Crow, as well as John Legend, Brittany Howard and St. Vincent. Then, it's Part 2 of Phil and David's live "Naked Lunch" with Paul Reiser, host of the 37th Annual Grammy Awards in 1995, recorded January 25, 2025 at the iconic Palace of Fine Arts Theatre as part of SF Sketchfest -- The San Francisco Comedy Festival. The 67th Annual Grammys delivered a night packed with unforgettable moments, and Chris and Matt are here to break it all down. From Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé's big wins to Doechii's historic Best Rap Album victory, they cover the night's highlights, surprises, and controversies. They discuss powerful speeches—like Chappell Roan's industry callout and Lady Gaga's advocacy for trans rights—along with memorable performances from legends like Stevie Wonder. Sabrina Carpenter's charm, Benson Boone's unexpected entrance, and St. Vincent's well-earned recognition all add to the mix, leaving us with one big question: is pop music in a better place than it's been in years? Bianca and Julian step away from their usual programming for a quick but in-depth discussion of the 67th Annual Grammy nominations. They break down the big categories—Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album—and explore the logic behind the picks. Are politics driving some of the nominations (and snubs)? Are we stuck in algorithm-driven bubbles? What's going on with Jacob Collier's hair? We have a lot to discuss. anythingbuttoto@gmail.com Music by Daniel Konikoff
The Blind Boys of Alabama are a legendary American gospel group founded in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. Originally called the Happy Land Jubilee Singers, the group consisted of mostly visually impaired students who found solace and inspiration in singing together. The original members were Clarence Fountain (baritone), George Scott (baritone and guitarist), Johnny Fields (bass), Velma Traylor (tenor), and Olice Thomas (baritone). Though the lineup has changed throughout the years, with none of the original members remaining, the core mission of the Blind Boys of Alabama has stayed consistent: creating uplifting and powerful gospel music. The Blind Boys of Alabama are credited with pioneering a unique approach to gospel, incorporating elements of soul, blues, and R&B into their sound. Their music has resonated with audiences for decades, and they've achieved incredible success, including: Winning six Grammy Awards Being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Receiving the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts The Blind Boys of Alabama have also collaborated with a wide range of artists from various genres, including Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and Ben Harper. Their enduring legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike. Khoree 'The Poet' is a Contemporary Spoken Word/R&B Artist who delivers clever, thought-provoking, mesmerizing poems with silky smooth music that leaves his listeners applauding, talking, laughing, and gasping while his eloquent words take them on an exciting and unique lyrical journey. Khoree's poems are about uplifting, empowering, and encouraging women to not give up on love and/or hope. His sensual style and delivery is fused with Jazz/R&B instrumental elements, accompanied by smooth background vocals. Khoree is creating quite a stir with his deep Barry White toned voice, blended with an aggressive Teddy Pendergrass attitude and style of poetry setting him apart from other poets in the entertainment industry, and several promoters are taking notice. The Gospel Single, Thank You, featuring Lenny Williams, was recently released in April 2018. The single was produced by Levi Seacer (New Power Generation and former Music Director to Prince.)Additional releases include the 2016 The Love Movement CD with includes 3 singles listed 'For Your Consideration in the 58th Annual Grammys. The main concern from the residents is traffic and safety. - Looks like the event side of things is picking up a bit of steam – we talked last week about the rocky mountain oyster fry in VC still taking place, and last week the announcement from both CA & NV saw some easing of event restrictions – and yesterday, Mike, you pointed out the concert listings on Harveys website, starting with Kenny Chesney on June 30/July 1 - Very unfortunate accident that happened late Sunday where a 3-car collision on highway 50 near Zephyr Cove claimed the life of one and sent another to the hospital via careflight. Impairment is suspected and the NHP said they’ve seen far too many crashes due to impairment over the past week - Speaking of auto accidents, yesterday morning a driver on Highway 89 lost control of their Subaru between Tahoe City & Alpine Meadows and eventually came to rest in the Truckee River. The pitch: Men's athletics kind of hog the limelight—a 2018 UN report found that only 4% of total sports media coverage focused on women's sports. Classically trained in voice from the age of 5, Nikhil Korula first lent his dulcet tones to sing with the likes of opera giants such as Placido Domingo, pop stars, Barry Manilow and the late Luther Vandross. As a boy soprano, Korula performed at Carnegie Hall by the age of 10 and also sang for one of Danny Elfman’s first film scores. In 1990, Nikhil Korula performed at the 32nd Annual Grammy® Awards with Mike and the Mechanics, sharing the stage on that fateful night with legends, Ray Charles, Miles Davis & Don Henley. However, after graduating from the USC Thornton School of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Operatic Vocal Performance, his creative talents drew him to the intense world of songwriting, jazz and improvisation which led to his playing many acoustic sets throughout Los Angeles. This experience, in turn, helped him to collaborate with some of the city’s finest jazz musicians to form the Nikhil Korula Band (NK Band). Due to its ever-increasing fan following, this vibrant musical act has traveled all over the globe playing festivals such as BONNAROO (2008 & 2009), PLAYBOY JAZZ FESTIVAL (2011), THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL (2013-2019) & SUMMERFEST (2007-2019), gathering worldwide attention one fan at a time. Blending the sounds of calypso, rock, reggae, African and Latin grooves, this unique sextet infuses extraordinary musicianship with irresistible dance jams, a combination that has led the NIKHL KORULA BAND to open for such esteemed artists as Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Ben Harper, Ray Lamontagne, Gavin Degraw, Gary Clark Jr, Thievery Corporation, Sublime with Rome, The Fray and countless others while also headlining venues like the House of Blues and performing at the Apollo Theater. In 2013, Nikhil Korula had the pleasure of recording 5 new songs for a new EP called SOLO SESSIONS with musical heroes of his, Butch Taylor and Jeff Coffin, from the Dave Matthews Band. One of the songs from the EP, "Fade Away," charted, debuting at #106 and moving all the way to #10 on the Hot AC charts. Singer-songwriter, Nikhil Korula also wrote the opening track, "Start It Up," for Ziggy Marley's new self titled album which recently won the Grammy for BEST REGGAE ALBUM, giving Korula his first Grammy® certificate as a songwriter. In 2017, Korula and his band would open for Ziggy Marley at Summerfest 2017 and also perform at Arroyo Seco, a new music festival put on by the creators of Coachella at the Rose Bowl alongside Tom Petty, Mumford & Sons, Weezer and The Meters, to name a few. Korula and his eclectic band opened for Robert Randolph at Summerfest 2019 in front of thousands last summer so look for the NK Band to make their return to Summerfest 2021 next summer. Currently, Nikhil Korula and the band are in the studio recording and mixing their 8th album, REVOLUTIONS, which will be released on January 29, 2021! With dedicated fans, exceptional live shows, and consistently strong songwriting, the Nikhil Korula Band continues to have a remarkable effect and amazing impact on audiences globally. Natalia Lafourcade, 33, is a highly acclaimed Mexican singer/songwriter who was recently nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 60th Annual Grammys for her album, Musas Vol.1 (Un homenaje al folclore Latinoamericano en manos de Los Macorinos), and is also the singer for the Oscar nominated song “Remember Me” from Pixar’s hit film “Coco”. In this episode, Natalia and I sit down to talk about her upcoming album “Musas Vol. 2,” out February 9th. We tackled the question…what’s better… a Grammy or a Latin Grammy? We then strayed into the subject of the music business, reggaeton, Broadway and how that song “Remember Me” came into her life. Episode Summary Potentially performing at the Oscars How Disney approached her about Coco's "Remember Me" Working with R&B star Miguel Is a Grammy more important than a Latin Grammy Musas Vol. 2 album "Hu Hu Hu" album Dreaming of Broadway Music business and reggaeton Natalia Lafourcade explains her concert experience If you’d like to listen to more episodes with this format, leave us your thoughts on Twitter @jackricofficial. Hey Clinkers, Aaron here -- I am out of town this week so welcome to an episode Jack and I recorded on a Monday. We never record on Mondays. It was weird. In this episode, we cover the pending return of "Magnum P.I.," The CW's new "feminist" angle for "Charmed" and the awful new version of WGN America. Also, Aaron had an Aziz Ansari conundrum he really needed to work out ... just listen, you'll see. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: 19.8 million viewers tuned into the 60th Annual Grammys, which is a 24% drop in ratings from 2017 — and it's an all-time low in viewership for the awards show CBS officially ordered reboots of "Cagney and Lacey" — described as "a reboot of the iconic series about two female police detectives and friends who keep the streets of Los Angeles safe" — and "Magnum P.I." — described as "an update of the classic TV series and is set in Hawaii. It follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator." SYFY has renewed "Happy!" for Season 2 Netflix has renewed "Fuller House" for Season 4 The CW has officially ordered a pilot for the new "Charmed" reboot series. It's been a year since the network announced the show, which was originally supposed to take place in the '70s. The network has allegedly scrapped the '70s theme for a "feminist angle," according to the show's official synopsis. Instead, we: - Questioned Mo'Nique's "legend" status - Traded baldhead secrets - Tried to figure out why Puff doesn't do more with Revolt - Looked at a fine-ass sex doll named Salma And some other shit, too.

Some things in life and business are to be expected. In this weeks news, there was a little bit of both involved - good and not so good. This "expectation" is in order for congratulations. Singer and reality TV regular Ray J is set to become a first-time father. Ray J and Princess Love wed in August, 2016. An additional congrats, goes to rapper Rick Ross as he has scored a high-profile deal with luxury rap watchmaker Hublot to named the official brand ambassador the company, which was established in 1976. Meek Mill and his legal issues seemed to be gaining some positive progress with names such as Jay-Z and Rev. Al Sharpton lending time to his probation violation case via their platforms. Unexpectedly, he hit yet another roadblock to freedom after a legal motion aimed at hopefully gaining freedom was denied. Keep hope alive for Meek! Donald Trump’s actions will forever keep him in a sunken place. Native Americans have confirmed that he uses the word Pocahontas as an offensive term used towards Senator Elizabeth Warren. “You were here long before any of us were here, although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas,” he joked. This guy has a lot of nerve! Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle. We’re only reporting on this for cultural purposes because the actress is a Black woman, lol. Congrats to them though! The 60th Annual Grammy nominations are in and we have to admit they are pretty lit. Cardi B has been nominated for two Grammys in the categories of Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and SZA has racked up a total of five nominations making her the most nominated woman for next year’s awards. The “Ctrl” singer is up for Best New Artist, Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best R&B Song, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best R&B Performance. We hope this dream will come true for them both at the 2018 award show taking place January 28...fingers crossed! How Does Your Upbringing Influence Your Behavior In Your Relationships? The crew had something interesting things to say on this one, lol. Get caught up with this and more next Wednesday, 9-10pm!
Marky Sal of Marky Sal Wall Decor joins us to break down the 2017 Grammys (2:02 mark), The State of the "Rap Game" (20:30 mark) and somewhere around the (28:20 mark) - Andrew Patterson and Marky Sal get a little President Trump "first 30 days" analysis going - so if you're conservative, might want to exit the "pod" when we officially launch into that part of the show
