Replatforming isn't always the best solution to technology challenges. An ecommerce platform can be fit-for-purpose but the implementation flawed, or outdated, resulting in the business thinking the issue is the underlying tech. Sometimes it's quicker, cheaper and more effective to improve how the current platform is built rather than pivot to a new vendor ecosystem. For this podcast, James Gurd and Michal Klim discuss the complexities of re-engineering ecommerce platforms, particularly focusing on Shopify. Michal is the CTO of respected development agency Commerce UI, and recently helped Pangaia re-engineer their Shopify storefront and tech stack. James & Michal explore the concept of technical and process debt, the importance of thoughtful maintenance, and the challenges of historical decisions in technology. Michal shares insights from his work with Pangaia, emphasising the need for a clean slate approach to build better solutions. The discussion also covers the role of automation, the use of Shopify Flow and MetaObjects, and the integration of third-party tools, culminating in a conversation about transitioning from classic to new customer accounts. Key takeaways: Re-engineering can be a better solution than re-platforming. Technical debt accumulates over time and needs addressing. Thoughtful maintenance is crucial for long-term success. Historical decisions can complicate current technology choices. A clean slate approach can lead to better outcomes. Simplifying complexity can enhance user experience. Automation tools can significantly improve operational efficiency. Shopify Flow and MetaObjects provide powerful solutions to operational challenges.

With great privilege, believes the humanitarian and entrepreneur Nachson Mimran, comes great responsibility. Brought up in a family that operates one of the largest agri-industrial businesses in West Africa, Mimran comes from considerable wealth, but unlike so many who have a background such as his, he is open and forthright about his inheritance and the responsibility he sees of doing good with it. With his decarbonization, refugee empowerment, and “human optimization” organization to.org, he's creating deep impact through various design and development projects in refugee settlements—including the Bidi Bidi Performing Arts Center, completed last year in Uganda—and empowering individuals and communities via what he describes as “venture philanthropy.” At The Alpina Gstaad hotel in the Swiss Alps, which he's the co-founder of, he provides exceptional hospitality experiences that subvert certain traditional industry codes, fostering a relaxed but elevated environment. On the episode, recorded in front of a live audience at The Lobby “hospitality event” in Copenhagen earlier this fall, Mimran discusses his big-picture view of the word hospitality; how a family tragedy led him and his brother to found to.org; and his bold vision for building transformative spaces for refugees.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Nachson Mimran[00:44] The Lobby[03:46] to.org[09:37] The Alpina Gstaad[09:37] Jean Claude Mimran[11:00] Marcel Bach[13:47] Arieh Mimran[19:29] Pangaia[23:28] Regenerate[23:28] Kakuma Refugee Settlement[23:28] Sumayya Vally[26:04] Hassell[26:04] Xavier De Kestelier[27:06] Bidi Bidi Performing Arts Centre[27:06] Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement[27:49] Mike Zuckerman[27:49] Nakivale Refugee Settlement[32:11] The Throne[38:16] Kutupalong Refugee Settlement[48:09] André Balazs

Flexible working is a hot topic. Amazon is the latest company to stir up debate around the virtues of giving employees the best possible work/life balance. A CBI Employment Trends survey found that 99% of all businesses surveyed believe that a flexible workforce is vital or important to competitiveness. BUT... Flexibility means different things to different people e.g. working around school runs, being able to work from home, starting later and finishing later, not having to take annual leave for appointments etc. And you need to consider diversity and inclusivity.... it's not as easy as it looks! We borrowed a quote from Sara Russell, Marketing Director at 5874 Commerce to kick start our debate: “So does the eCommerce industry need flexible working? If we want to attract and retain top talent, keep our teams engaged and provide top-level customer satisfaction then yes we do.” Tune in to listen to different approaches from three highly respected digital leaders: Ross Allsop, Director of Growth at PANGAIA, Dan Partridge, CEO at leading Shopify partner Swanky (Shopify Plus Agency) and Paul Rogers, MD at award winning digital agency Vervaunt.

Every brand wants to build brand love. If you're not actively working on it, you're actively falling behind the competition. Do you know the one thing it takes to get there? Building a Brand Universe first.  By giving your community something to fall for, you build a world your customers, creators & Brand Advocates can find meaning and love in.   That's why, this week, Verity's welcoming Sekai Masunda (Senior Brand & Content Marketing Manager | ex-Jigsaw, ex-lululemon, ex-Pangaia) to the podcast.  From a marketing career affirmed when lululemon slid into her DMs, Sekai has fast become an industry go-to for all things content, brand & Advocacy. While she never intended to go into brand building, brand building found her; and the rest is history.  Now, she's sharing her tried-and-tested tactics for turning your customers into Advocates via Brand Universes and tapping into taste communities (a term coined by our past guest, Ana Andjelic). From Sekia's exact formula for good content to her take on why brands must stop taking themselves too seriously, there's disruptive wisdom afoot.  Tune in to hear Sekai's expert advice on… Making Money While Making Room for Brand: To drive impactful Brand Advocacy while helping the bottom line, bridging the gap between community feedback and C-Suite decisions is crucial. It's not just listening to what your community says; it's seamlessly translating those insights into strategic actions. Sekai knows how. Actually Knowing Your Advocates: REFY set a new standard, with community events that put their customers in the spotlight. Lululemon's affinity for community led the charge and, while at Jigsaw, all VIP events hosted through Sekai were also customer-only. While influencers still play a role in brand strategy, your customers are now your most powerful Advocates. Each customer and every store has unique needs. It's time to get on the ground, understand those differences, and deliver what your customers truly want — not what you assume they want. The Key to Disruptive 360° Campaigns: Dive into the data behind Jigsaw's ‘New Age Denim' campaign. This campaign was all about authenticity — featuring real bodies and real store managers, wearing their favorite denim as uniform. With a focus on understanding the customer journey, Sekai asked; when do people actually buy denim, and how can we address their fit concerns? From there, her team built category awareness step-by-step. Now, she's sharing the playbook.  Listen. Learn. Before the dawn of time, Gaia, our Mother Earth, gave birth to the first trees. With their strong trunks and majestic crowns, they quickly converted the fallow land into fertile soil. They cherished the everlasting rituals of Gaia that sent a ferocious force through their veins, bringing life to the highest branches and deepest roots. It did not take long for them to cover the whole continent and create the vast Forests of Pangaia by Thomas Franken from Pangaia Games. Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2023/05/20/forests-of-pangaia-saturday-review/ Correction The publisher pointed out that the backside of the box shows two FSC certificates, one for the paper and cardboard and the other for the wooden components. All wooden components are sourced from 100% FSC-certified beech and all paper and cardboard components are FSC-certified as well, with the exception of the German black core cards, which were not available in FSC quality. Why We Care
Rethinking waste, the microplastics problem and women in science with Dr. Amanda Parkes, Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA

In this week's episode I'm chatting with Dr. Amanda Parkes, the Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA and a materials engineering lecturer at Harvard. Amanda is really difficult to introduce in a few sentences as she has experience across such a wide range of sectors, from computer science, mechanical engineering, and biotech, all the way to fashion and material innovation. I met her when I was working on the Impact team at PANGAIA, and one of my favourite memories from that time was the science sessions she would run on Friday afternoons to introduce us to all the amazing science behind the material innovations we were working with. I have to admit that growing up I did have a bit of a love-hate relationship with science, and Amanda was one of the people who made me rediscover and love that space! We spoke about how we can rethink our approach to waste and how by looking at places of abundance in nature we can find “new” materials to work with – through a process she refers to as high-tech naturalism. An example of this is FLWRDWN, an alternative to animal and synthetic down made using waste wildflowers. She also explained how microplastics are shed when we wash some synthetic materials, how these end up polluting our rivers, lakes and oceans - and what you can do to avoid this.Want to dive deeper?Learn more about PANGAIA's innovations on pangaia.comFLWRDWN https://eu.pangaia.com/pages/flowerdownPicture A Scientist documentary - https://www.pictureascientist.com/Fashion rental platforms: By Rotation, Hurr, Rotaro, Rent The RunwayLittle linksAmanda on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandaparkes/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love! The app not only extends the lifespan of our clothes but allows us to fall in love with them all over again and has already been integrated by several brands including Ganni and Hurr. Sitting within the Gen Z category herself, Josephine is startlingly aware of her eco-conscious yet convenience-obsessed generation and her aim is to shift the mindset within this space, making sustainable choices more accessible for the masses. Having recently raised over $2.4 million in pre-seed funding invested by the likes of the Founder of Depop, Pangaia's former COO, the president of menswear at Tom Ford and myself, this is just the beginning for Sojo, and the start of Josephine Phillips becoming a force of her generation within the sustainable fashion space. In this week's episode I'm chatting with my friend Jesse Adler, a biomolecular scientist and materials innovation researcher at PANGAIA. Jesse is one of my favourite people - she is one the most enthusiastic, smartest, and overall just wonderful human beings I know. We spoke about materials innovation and what in her view are the most pressing issues in terms of materials that we need to find alternatives for, and about biomimicry and how so much of what we design as humans have been inspired by nature, including for example planes. We also discussed the cyclical nature of the world we live in and how the concept of waste doesn't exist in nature.Aside from her job at PANGAIA Jesse is also a future materials research fellow at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on finding replacements for artificial colorants in fungi. So we spoke about the makeup collection she created using pigments extracted from various types of fungi, and how she approaches this as a collaboration rather than an exploitative extractive practice. She shared her tips for ethical foraging and also how she practices mindfulness to connect with the wider ecosystems we are part of.I've had bits of this conversation with Jesse over the past few years and it is so nice to have finally recorded it, I hope you'll find it as exciting as we did!Want to dive deeper?Jesse's portfolio - https://www.jadlerdesign.com/Learn more about Alchemical Mycology - https://www.jadlerdesign.com/alchemical-mycologyLearn more about biomimicry - https://biomimicry.org/what-is-biomimicry/Watch Fantastic Fungi on Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/81183477Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/merlin-sheldrake/entangled-life/9780525510321Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/thich-nhat-hanh/peace-is-every-step/9780712674065The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/siddhartha-mukherjee/gene/9780099584575Little linksJesse on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jadlerdesignWhy We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.Thank you for caring and sending you lots of love! Lisa McSherry is an Author, Priestess, and world traveler. In late 2021, after living in the Pacific Northwest for more than 25 years, I retired from the workforce and moved to Portugal along with my husband to create a new life. It was the fulfillment of a dream long held — to travel Europe, experiencing the culture, history, art, and food(!) in a slow, deeper fashion. After coordinating the Review Circle for The Beltane Papers magazine for seven years, I used that as a model to create Facing North: A Community Resource, in 2006. There I and my Review Circle have published hundreds of reviews of items we think the Pagan/New Age/Spiritual community would find interesting. Since 2000 I have led JaguarMoon coven. Together we teach the Art of Ritual class, a year long course of “witchcraft 101”. Together we celebrate the seasons, work magick, and share the Mysteries in a unique, mentor-based setting. I am the author of many books: CyberCoven.Org (self-published, 2004 [oop]), The Virtual Pagan (Red Wheel/Weiser, 2002 [oop]), and Magickal Connections: Creating a Healthy and Lasting Spiritual Group (New Page, 2007). In early 2021 I re-published The Virtual Pagan 2.0 after a massive revision. My newest book, tentatively titled A Witches' Guide to Crafting Your Practice, is due out from Llewellyn Worldwide in the Fall of 2022. Over the years I have contributed articles to several magazines, including Witches & Pagans, SageWoman, PanGaia, newWitch, and The Blessed Bee. Its collection of colorful wardrobe basics are not as basic as they seem. Lift the lid and you'll find biodegradable sweat suits made from eucalyptus plants, accessories made from a mushroom leather alternative, and sunglasses made from carbon dioxide. With a background in computer and material science plus a wealth of art and design experience, Dr. Parkes operates in an interesting space. Her role as Chief Innovation Officer means she oversees how the company sources materials and which projects it invests in.In this interview, she discusses what she calls the “valley of death” between the research lab and the commercial fashion industry, and how PANAGAIA acts as a bridge over that gap. She also gives us her thoughts on regulations in the sustainability industry, coming into fashion through the back door, and what we're getting wrong about microplastics.Sustainability is not about finding one perfect solution. It's about progress. The only competition for brands should be the materials and processes that are harmful to our planet. “In the same way that nature functions best when you have biodiversity, we really see that in the same way for the material ecology and economy of our brand,” says Dr. Parkes.Sit back and enjoy our conversation with the wonderfully insight Dr. Amanda Parkes. If you enjoyed this episode, or any of our episodes, please subscribe, rate us and leave a comment. A large portion of a garment's environmental footprint is determined at the raw material level, so for many designers and brands, the easiest first step on their sustainability journey is to begin by replacing existing materials with sustainable alternatives. However, sustainable material sourcing is no easy task. Whether plant-based, animal-based or synthetic manmade fiber, every material choice comes with trade-offs. The extraction, processing, and manufacturing of materials is inherently accompanied by challenges that can have short-term and long-term implications on people and the planet. Whether a fiber is better or worse depends on the numerous factors influencing the life cycle of fabric – from the cultivation of the crop through to processing, assembly, transportation, use, and the subsequent disposal of the garment by the consumer. Adding another layer of complexity, just like "sustainability" can mean many different things depending on personal ethos, the same can be said for determining sustainable materials. A sustainable material could refer to it containing no animal byproducts, or it can mean no plastic (not even recycled). It could be defined as less water use, fewer carbon emissions, or fewer chemicals. How should brands approach material sustainability with so many contradicting and differing perspectives? What makes a sustainable material? What questions should brands ask when determining what materials to use? How should data be used to compare and contrast materials? What is the role of third-party ranking systems and certifications? During the 2022 Sustainable Fashion Forum, Dr. Amanda Parkes, Chief Innovation Officer at PANGAIA, Diana Rosenberg, Sr. Manager, Product Sustainability at GAP Inc, Adam Taubenfligel, Creative Director at Triarchy Denim, and Tara St James, Founder of Re:Source(d) and Vice President of Supply Chain and Sustainability at Another Tomorrow, hit the SFF digital mainstage for an industry roundtable moderated by Jasmin Malik Chua, Sourcing Journal's Sourcing and Labor Editor, exploring the nuances layers of material sustainability.

When the start-up launched a pop-up at Selfridges in Oxford Street last Spring, huge queues snaked around the store as shoppers, emerging from a long and tough lockdown, waited patiently to get their hands on one of their super bright sweatshirts and joggers. The sustainable values and optimistic colour palette struck a chord with a customer looking for style that combined optimism and purpose in pandemic-ravaged world. However, what's interesting, is that Pangaia isn't really a fashion brand in the traditional sense, and it doesn't just produce brightly coloured sweats (its clothing takes in a range of jersey products and denim). Founded in the UK in 2018, Pangaia is a materials science company with a vision to unite scientists, designers, producers and brands and retailer in the pursuit of a more sustainable future for fashion. Its clothing is a manifestation of what's possible when all these communities come together to create desirable, ethical and sustainable product. In this episode of the In Conversation podcast in partnership with Klarna for Business, Lauretta Roberts, Editor in Chief of TheIndustry.fashion speaks to Christine Goulay who has been nothing short of a trailblazer in the realm of sustainable fashion. Christine is now the Global Director of Science B2B at Pangaia and part of her role is to encourage other brands to collaborate with Pangaia through the white-labelling of their know-how to corporate gifting. Her career in sustainable fashion dates back to 2006 when she began working with Edun Apparel, the ethical clothing company founded by Ali and Bono Hewson. Until April of last year she was head of sustainable innovation at luxury conglomerate Kering and she sits on various advisory boards. She tells us what drew her to Pangaia, what it does that is so special and how transparency and collaboration, combined with science and creativity, will lead to a better future for our industry.Get breaking news as it happens and be the first to know when our podcasts go live by following:  INSTAGRAM  ***  LINKEDIN  ***  TWITTER  ***  FACEBOOKGet breaking news, big name interviews & insights delivered to your inbox daily HERE

Pangaia chief innovation officer Dr. Amanda Parkes: 'Fast fashion is slowly dying'

Amanda Parkes never thought she'd wind up in fashion. Then again, 2-year-old Pangaia, where she serves as chief innovation officer, isn't your typical fashion company.  "We are a materials science company," Parkes said on the latest Glossy Podcast. "We're all about the future of materials, and we really think that's an approach that can change the fashion industry from the inside out." However, many fashion fans best know Pangaia as the brand behind the rainbow-bright sweatsuits with lines of text that have been worn by Harry Styles and Kourtney Kardashian. Parkes started her career as a mechanical engineer and product designer, before eventually going back to school, at the M.I.T. Media Lab. There, she earned a hybrid computer science-materials science Ph.D. and the rare job title of fashion scientist. "I came into fashion through the back door," she said. "When I was in college, 20 years ago, there was no such thing as a fashion scientist." But, she said -- despite the lack of interplay between the two worlds -- fashion and science go hand-in-hand. "Fashion is an amazing platform to be able to show off science," she said, adding, "I was really shocked when I got more into the fashion industry to realize that big fashion companies don't have internal research. I was coming from tech, working with companies like Intel and Google. They are doing their internal R&D 5-10 years out to change and transform and make their industries what they want them to be. Fashion didn't have that as much inside of the big companies or at all. So I saw that as first of all massive opportunity for [Pangaia] to fill in the space." Parkes also discussed the power of the Gen-Z shopper, the state of greenwashing and the future of sustainability in fashion.

To achieve optimal eyeshadow application, Cowen reaches for a folded piece of toilet paper to create a border that runs from the edge of the eye to the end of the brow. From there, a wash of orange shadow serves as a base to taupe accents and a diffused blend of nude, making for a warm, Earthy-ombré moment.
