Capital One is looking at ways to expand the use of AI-based agents on the heels of launching its agentic AI-based tool, Chat Concierge, earlier this year.Chat Concierge answers customer queries and can help with tasks such as comparing available vehicles and exploring financing options online before consumers head to a dealership.  In building its tech stack, Capital One reviewed how consumers use AI-based tools, the types of questions they ask, and how digital communication can be used to drive customers into the dealership, Annie Fallows, head of the bank's dealer-facing Navigator Platform, told Auto Finance News. Navigator Platform, launched in 2023, allows dealers to access information such as inventory searches and pre-qualification to provide more accurate financing offers to customers. “We made an intentional choice that we wanted to lead with being helpful versus lead with immediately trying to collect [a customer's] name and contact info,” she said. “Our dealers are able to take all that information about what's happened on the chat to pick up in store and get to that car sale that everyone is working for. This is just the beginning of the journey.” The bank is reviewing ways to improve Chat Concierge and apply it to other operations both internally and externally, Fallows said, “whether that's making our associates more effective [or] looking at additional places in the dealer process that would benefit from this type of interaction.  “We're at the beginning of a new journey, and it starts with making sure that our models and our technology are working the way that they're intended and providing high-quality interactions.” Capital One's auto originations rose 22.4% year over year in the first quarter to $9.2 billion, while the bank's auto book ticked up 5.2% YoY to $77.7 billion, according to the bank's April 22 earnings supplement. During this special episode of the “Weekly Wrap,” podcast, Auto Finance News Editor Amanda Harris and Capital One's Fallows discuss the latest trends in customer experience, dealer relations and technology.

John is joined by Jim Fallows—former Atlantic national correspondent, National Book Award winner, and author of Breaking The News on Substack—to discuss Jimmy Carter's life and legacy. Fallows, who served as Carter's chief White House speechwriter, discusses the qualities that made Carter an initially mesmerizing but deeply flawed and historically misunderstood figure; his long-underrated policy accomplishments; the personal attributes that made him formidable (focus, toughness), those that were his downfall (vanity, naivete), and those people saw in him that weren't there at all (niceness). Fallows also opines on the importance of Carter's surprising relationships with artists and outlaws such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Hunter Thompson—arguing, in fact, that Thompson's advocacy of Carter was what put him in the White House. On October 10th —25 days ahead of the 2024 presidential election—Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and veteran political correspondent James Fallows sat down to discuss journalism's role in American democracy today. Fallows has been a notable observer of this dynamic since at least 1996, when he published Breaking the News, a book which described the origins of the public's mistrust of the news media.  Fallows believed as much then as now that most political journalism is a source of entertainment focused on the gamesmanship of policymaking, rather than practical information for civically engaged citizens. This disconnect has only grown as many local news publications have proven unable to adapt to the digital age, leaving many communities to become ‘news deserts.' Together with his wife Deborah, both have sought to alleviate distrust of the media and the related knowledge gaps by reporting from small towns in their book and HBO documentary Our Towns. Their work has led them to conclude that the national media lacks sufficient capacity or interest to provide a platform for all the complexity and ideological nuance found among the voting populace. They now operate the Our Towns Civic Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to uncovering stories of civic renewal and local success.  In this live conversation recorded at the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Duke Reiter and James Fallows discuss how the imperfect barometer of national-scale journalism can shape citizen behaviors and tensions between the major parties, especially in an election year.  WATCH THIS DISCUSSION on the Ten Across YouTube channel.Fact check of today's episode:The Barry Goldwater Range Complex located in Arizona's Gila Bend is incorrectly referred to as the John McCain Bombing Range in this discussion.  Relevant links and resources:  James Fallows | Substack: Breaking the News  Breaking the News (Fallows, 1996)  Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey Into the Heart of America (Fallows, James and Deborah Fallows, 2018)  “A Kansas town offers transportation for voters but many are unaware” (NBC News, 2018) “Why Phoenix is the ‘Most American City' with George Packer” (Ten Across Conversations, 2024)

In an exclusive interview with ‘Mehdi Unfiltered,' the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, speaks to Mehdi on the threats that face both Palestinians in Gaza and his own organization. “I don't know how much worse it can become, I have to say, we are losing and we are lacking words to describe the situation,” says Lazzarini. UNRWA is currently fighting a polio outbreak in Gaza, but a successful vaccination campaign there is nearly impossible given Israel's bombardment. “This is a communicable disease which doesn't know any border and could also spread in the entire region, including Israel,” Lazzarini tells Mehdi. In addition to disease, UNRWA faces repeated Israeli attempts at dismantling their entire organization. From accusations that staffers took part in the Oct. 7 attack, to allegations that Hamas builds tunnels under UNRWA schools.“I do not have the military expertise to look at what's underneath the entire Gaza Strip… All these allegations need to be investigated. First, we need to investigate the killing of the UN staff,” says Lazzarini. Watch the full conversation above to hear what the Commissioner-General also has to say about war crimes in Gaza. Also on the show: why can't U.S. news organizations get their coverage of Donald Trump right? Mehdi is joined by journalist and author Wajahat Ali as well as former chief speechwriter to President Jimmy Carter, James Fallows, to talk about it. The conversation includes Ali calling for “fact checkers to retire for this election cycle,” Fallows on the “failure of imagination” among liberal white journalists, and a dark joke about detention camps from one of the two that we'll leave for them to tell. Then there is Afghanistan, where the situation for women and minorities gets worse by the day, under Taliban rule, but which is being ignored by much of our mainstream media.“What we see today in Afghanistan is gender apartheid. Women have been erased from public life. Their basic rights have been taken away from them,” Ali Maisam Nazary, Head of Foreign Relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF), tells Mehdi on this week's show.Watch the full interview to hear more on the status of women in Afghanistan. Mehdi also challenges Nazary on the fighting in the Panjshir Valley, the NRF's record in the last government, and the difficulties that lie ahead. If you're a paid subscriber, be sure to let us know what you think in the comments, and who you would like to see Mehdi talk to next! We touch on all of these to get his perspectives on Trump's presidency and current legal challenges, AI, social media, US/China relations, working as Carter's speech writer, the news industry in general, and much more. A believer that "transparency is the new objectivity," Fallows openly acknowledges upfront the aspects of his political background that are potentially relevant to his views. While today there are so many things happening at a distance that alarm us, Fallows ends by reminding us that he consistently finds great resilience and possibility when he goes local to get a closer look. His observations are informative and sober, but ultimately optimistic. Join us.

In 2023, Aston Martin took a leap to the front of Formula 1. They went from midfield battlers to podium finishers, ahead of Mercedes and Ferrari. How? As the engineer who led the creation of the team's car, Technical Director Dan Fallows, is one of many possible answers to that question. Dan began his F1 career in 2002, as an aerodynamic engineer for Jaguar. Four years later, he joined Red Bull – where he learnt from one of the sport's greatest car designers in the form of Adrian Newey and played a part in the team's most successful period. His first two seasons at Aston Martin were difficult, but it seems to be third time lucky for Dan and the team. He tells Tom Clarkson why the 2022 car is far superior to its predecessor and how the talent of the team's workforce surpassed his expectations. He explains where his passion for aerodynamics comes from, how playing guitar keeps him occupied outside of F1, and why Fernando Alonso has had such a big impact on the team. James Fallows on What is Happening in the Sky It's been an eventful few months for flying objects. A Chinese spy balloon captured national attention and sparked an international incident--and a lot of hot air. But closer to the ground, there have been two near collisions of commercial jets at U.S. airports. This week, Shane talks to journalist (and pilot) James Fallows about “What the hell is happening in the sky?” to borrow from one of his recent posts. Fallows has been chronicling American life for decades, most notably as a longtime correspondent for The Atlantic. Now he's writing about aviation, spy balloons, politics, and whatever else catches his observant eye on his new site, “Breaking the News,” hosted on Substack. Fallows talked about the two near misses at Austin airport and JFK, which could have led to a catastrophic loss of human life, and how an overburdened commercial aviation system may be poised for a disaster. He shared his insights about the Chinese spy balloon kerfuffle, informed in part from his time living in China as a correspondent. And Fallows reflected on the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, for whom he wrote speeches at the White House. “What the Hell is Happening in the Sky?” Fallows recent post on his new Substack page https://fallows.substack.com/p/what-the-hell-is-happening-in-the Fallows on Twitter https://twitter.com/JamesFallows?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Fallows' archive at The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/author/james-fallows/ And his recent reflections on Jimmy Carter's lucky life https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/02/jimmy-carter-accomplishments-james-fallows/673146/ Books about flying discussed on this episode include: West with the Night: A Memoir by Beryl Markham https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780865477636/westwiththenight Fate is the Hunter by Ernest K.
