We head to Sustainable fashion Boutique Agora in todays New Moon episode to hear about Sky Diamonds and a new collection launched by activist, author, actor and podcaster, Lily Cole. She explains how the lab grown gems are created through carbon dioxide collected from the atmosphere and gives us her thoughts on how the fashion industry needs tighter regulation. Next we hear from Belgian journalist Bart from Antwerp, who gives us a humbling insight into farming Alpacas close to Es figural about how he made it through what was a rather rough winter but ended on a high after his Black Gold was commissioned by the mayor of Santa Eulalia to nourish the plants of the province. We close with a LIVE talk recorded at Juntos farm this weekend with Medicine festival co founder and host Josh Dugdale on how the event grew from 200 in 2020 to 7,000 people this year and how they support and celebrate indigenous rights all over the world. Last but not least, Pablo, founder of the Fundacio Actividades Biosfericas explains how they restore critical watersheds at the top of the Andean mountain range through a process they have called - "Milking the clouds".

Dive into the world of Burning Man with Erica Blair, Associate Director of the project. Uncover the essence of this annual Nevada desert gathering where 80,000 creative souls unite, igniting a global community-building movement. Explore the ten principles driving Burning Man's ethos, from leaving no trace to radical inclusion. Discover the transformative power beyond the surface perceptions of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. Get insights into the vision, governance, and financing of the project. This episode features an interview with Erica Blair, the Associate Director of the Burning Man project.Exploring Burning Man Culture:[2:54]: What is Burning Man? It's an annual event held in the Nevada desert where 80,000 burners come together to explore their creativity. However, it's more than just an event; it's a larger movement that enables people worldwide to build communities in their own locales.[4:07]: What's the symbolism behind burning the Man? There is no official interpretation; it's open to anyone's personal understanding when witnessing this showcase of ingenuity.Burning Man's Ten Principles:[5:31]: We begin with Erica discussing the ten principles of Burning Man, one of which is "leaving no trace." The idea is for people to leave the world in a better state than they found it.[7:41]: Let's delve into the gifting principle, one that is sometimes misconstrued. Giving is central; you can offer your energy, but monetary exchanges are discouraged. It's not a transactional environment. Burners themselves uphold this culture, co-creating the experience.Sustaining the Culture:[11:29]: How can this culture be sustained?[14:26]: Radical inclusion is a fundamental principle of Burning Man. If you aspire to be a Burner, the community will warmly embrace you.Participation and Accessibility:[15:30]: However, attending Burning Man can be expensive. That's why people are encouraged not only to visit Black Rock City but also to participate in local events.[18:00]: What happens to the art created for Burning Man? Not everything is burned!Engaging with the Principles:[20:39]: Another principle is participation. You don't have to lead a workshop, but this principle is an opportunity to contemplate how you can genuinely contribute.[22:04]: And what about immediacy, the principle added after the initial nine? There's always so much to be present for. We should engage with the moment rather than constantly having our sights set on the future. This is deeply rooted in the present.Beyond Stereotypes:[23:58]: There's a common perception of Burning Man involving Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n Roll. With the radical inclusion principle, anyone can find something enjoyable. While this image may attract certain individuals, people's experiences surpass these superficial aspects. It's a chance for personal transformation to take place.Behind the Scenes:[27:37]: What is the vision of the Burning Man project? How is its governance structured, and how is the event funded?[29:32]: Erica Blair comes from the branding world. What about the concept of the "brand" for Burning Man (although "brand" is seen as a controversial term for BM)?Current Discussions and Future Projects:[32:12]: What are the current discussions and topics of interest within the Burning Man project?[37:20]: How about pursuing other projects beyond the Burning Man event?Harvest of the Day:[38:38]: What is the one thing that gives Erica Blair hope? brief interview with model and environmentalist Lily Cole. She will discuss the fashion industry's efforts towards greater sustainability.Harvest Series is produced in partnership with

Mystic. Painter. Feminist. Fantasist. Forgotten pioneer. Who exactly was Hilma af Klint? In this very special live episode of The Last Bohemians, as part of Tate Lates, host Kate Hutchinson talks to actor, model and activist Lily Cole and Amrita Dhallu, Assistant Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, to discuss the life (1862-1944) and work of the once forgotten Swedish pioneer of abstract art. Cole stars as one of De Fem ('The Five'), af Klint's Stockholm-based spiritual group who communed with spirits during séances in the late-1800s, in Lasse Hallström's brand new biopic of the artist. Dhallu is part of the team who put together Tate Modern's latest exhibition, boldly pairing Klint's extraordinary paintings with those of Piet Mondrian and asking us to consider the role that the natural world played in their work. Together, they consider how great women artists throughout history have been criminally overlooked, the legacy of af Klint's work today and why the af Klint renaissance is in full-swing. Hilma is streaming now on Viaplay; Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life runs at Tate Modern, London, until 3 September This episode was produced by Sarah Myles and hosted by Kate Hutchinson. The Last Bohemians theme music is by Emmy The Great.
What is that people hate about the Pre-Raphaelites? From the 19th century to the present day their detractors have been remarkably consistent in the language that they have used to the describe their visceral dislike of these artists and their works. Dinah Roe, Greg Tate and Lynda Nead join Matthew Sweet to examine what makes Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his gang such a polarising force in art history. They also delve into the powerful and sensual poetry of Christina Rossetti and Walter Pater's scandalous book about the Renaissance. My guest today on the Green Dream is Lily Cole, British model-turned-environmentalist and author of https://www.lilycole.com/who-cares-wins-the-book (Who Cares Wins: How to Protect the Planet You Love), an eye-opening book about climate change. Lily began modeling twenty years ago and has been named “Model of the Year” and one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. When Lily was 17, she modeled for a jewelry company that was later accused of exploiting local Bushmen with its diamond mining practices. Lily traveled to Botswana to understand the situation, and she was so moved by what she saw, she helped the Bushmen export their own jewelry and keep the profits. This was her first campaign to help the planet and humanity, and it put her on the path toward activism. Since then, she has woven together her modeling and climate awareness work. Following the publication of her book, Lily launched a podcast of her own, also called https://www.lilycole.com/podcast (Who Cares Wins). On it, she discusses climate solutions with guests such as Chelsea Clinton, David Attenborough, and Elon Musk. I heard Lily speak at the TED Countdown Summit in Edinburgh last year, during a dinner she hosted at the botanical gardens for conference attendees, and was truly moved by her passion for climate reforms. I think you will be too. Huckletree, Ireland and the UK's leading independent workspace brand, have announced their impressive lineup of influential minds set to lead the annual Earthrise Summit on 28th September. The event, in partnership with CMS, Silicon Valley Bank and Replenish Earth, will be run in a hybrid model both online and in-person, hails over 50 world-renowned visionaries from Dublin, London, Berlin, Copenhagen and New York. In 2021, Earthrise Summit was host to over 1,000 start-up founders and operators as well as investors and VC's. The Summit's mission is to bring together the most innovative, exciting, mission-led brands and funds to drive tangible impact for a better, more sustainable and equitable future. The theme of this year's Earthrise Summit is Urban Futures. Currently 55% of the world's population is now living in urban areas and the UN predicts this number will rise to 68% by 2050. The Earthrise Summit will put a specific focus on the ways in which we can use our urban centres and cities to support a more sustainable future. The keynote speaker will be the world-renowned Jan Gehl, a Danish architect and urban design consultant whose life work has centred around reorienting our cities for pedestrians and cyclists and his work has transformed the very fabric of urban spaces worldwide. Previous headliners included model and actress turned activist and social entrepreneur, Lily Cole, and Oscar winning filmmaker, athlete and photographer, Jimmy Chin. Jan is credited with bringing about some of the most successful urban planning transformations in history, and through educating the world of urban design on the intrinsically linked value between well-planned and used public spaces and liveable cities. He has worked across the globe with governments of all sizes and ambitions to remodel city centres where public realms were at best an afterthought and at worst actively shunned. “Sustainability is at the forefront of discourse, and that is where it needs to be – we are delighted at Huckletree to be able to bring some of the best minds available together and have these important conversations. These messages need a platform – and I am excited for Huckletree to be that stage for Earthrise Summit 2022,” commented Andrew Lynch, COO & co-founder of Huckletree. “This year's Earthrise Summit is a call to the industry to rethink how we better build cities for tomorrow, from today, and to galvanise some of the most influential people in the urban planning industry, from developers to creatives. I am so thrilled that Huckletree is in a position to bring an event like Earthrise Summit to life and to bring it to so many people in our industry across the world. The data shows – we are at a crucial tipping point- and I believe we all have a role to play in ensuring our urban centres focus around both people and sustainability,” added Gaby Hersham, CEO & co-founder of Huckletree. “CMS is delighted to partner with Huckletree to bring the Earthrise Summit and its messages to the fore in 2022. Having sustainability at the heart of urban planning and development is the only way our cities will adapt to tackle the climate crisis head on. We believe the Earthrise Summit will bring together people with the vision required to enact the changes we all want to see,”Anthony Waller, Partner at CMS, commented. Fourteen years ago this week, 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher was sexually assaulted and killed in a brutal attack in her apartment in the Italian city of Perugia. As the world's media descended, a narrative quickly emerged around Amanda Knox - Meredith's American flatmate - and her then boyfriend Rafaele Sollecito. After being found guilty and serving four years in prison, Amanda was fully exonerated by the Italian Supreme Court on appeal in 2015. Amanda Knox talks to Emma about trying to restore her reputation, losing control of her identity, and speaking out. The starting gun has fired on COP26 - we hear from Laurence Tubiana, France's Climate Change Ambassador and Special Representative for COP21, and Amber Rudd - Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change at the time of Paris and the then leader of the UK's COP21 negotiating team. Kathleen Stock was, until last week, a professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex. In the last few years she has become better known for her gender critical views, contributing to the highly charged public debate over trans rights and what she and others see as the re-defining of the word ‘woman'. She gives an exclusive interview to Emma Barnett. We meet the first woman to write a James Bond novel. Award-winning author Kim Sherwood is to write three new books set in the iconic world of James Bond.
Lily Cole is a model, actor, filmmaker, entrepreneur, podcast host and environmental activist. She's written a book about the climate, offering solutions to global challenges. She now lives in Portugal but we speak to her from COP26 in Glasgow. We also speak to the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg who sets the scene for us in Glasgow. We go back to Hasina Safi, who used to be Women's Minister in Afghanistan. Now she's a refugee in the UK, living in an hotel. We find out how things are for her and her family since we spoke to her last month. We speak to Dr Youmna Mouhamad who's designed a new comb to make conditioning and combing afro hair easier and less painful. She explains how she came up with idea and how she moved from a concept to a engineered product. And finally Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green about secondary school children getting vaccines, and protests outside schools. Labour are now calling for exclusion zones around schools to "stop the spread of misinformation".
The Conservative MP has died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in Essex. As politicians on all sides pay tribute to one of their colleagues, Laura and Alex Forsyth get together with Adam to reflect on Sir David's life and death, as well as the issue of MPs' safety. In this episode you can also hear an interview that we recorded earlier this afternoon, with the environmental activist, Lily Cole. Lily has been at the TED climate conference in Edinburgh, discussing her campaigning on solutions to climate change. Today's Newscast was made by Danny Wittenberg with producers Georgia Coan and Alix Pickles. The studio director was Emma Crowe and the assistant editor was Sam Bonham.

Carlo Rovelli is the internationally bestselling theoretical physicist whose many fans include Benedict Cumberbatch, Antony Gormley, Neil Gaiman and Lily Cole. In May 2021 he came to Intelligence Squared to talk about the themes of his new book Helgoland, in which he takes us back to the birth of a revolutionary idea that has reshaped the whole of science and our very conception of the world.Rovelli told the story of the brilliant young Werner Heisenberg who, suffering from hay fever, retreated to the treeless island of Helgoland in the North Sea where he began to glimpse a world in which nothing exists until it interacts with something else, upending our all-too-solid conception of reality. This is the world of quantum theory. Now a century on from Heisenberg’s extraordinary insight, Rovelli has done what he dared not do before – to connect quantum theory with a panoply of philosophical ideas, including Buddhist thought, the problem of consciousness and even the discussions between Lenin and Bogdanov at the time of the Russian revolution. He explained that the way we interpret this insight has profound implications for our culture and philosophy. As he says, ‘Our ‘I’ is made of relations, as is our society, our cultural, spiritual and political life… It is time to take this theory fully on board, for its nature to be discussed beyond the restricted circles of theoretical physicists and philosophers, to deposit its distilled honey, so sweet and a little intoxicating, into the whole of contemporary culture.’Rovelli was in conversation with Philip Pullman, author of the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, and named by The Times as one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. These two master storytellers discussed how it is only through our imaginations that we can truly understand the world we live in.To buy the book click here: https://www.primrosehillbooks.com/product/helgoland-carlo-rovelli/ Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/intelligencesquared. In this episode, actor and WWF ambassador Cel Spellman explores the environmental impact of our clothes, with the help of supermodel, author and climate activist Lily Cole, and WWF's Apparel and Textiles lead Alexis Morgan They uncover the carbon and water footprint behind our clothes, the impact fast fashion has on people and rivers around the world, and how to make a sustainable fashion statement. Today on the REV podcast we speak to Lily Cole - model, actress, entrepreneur and now author of an incredible book, Who Cares Wins - reasons for optimism in our changing world. Lily started her career in modelling early, and quickly took advantage of the education she was getting into consumerism and unsustainable production to explore her own interest in ethical manufacturing and environmentalism. She became a spokesperson for animal cruelty, human injustices and detrimental fashion practices from the inside of the industry, and has only allowed her voice to grow with each passing year. She has set up a sustainable sunglasses brand called Wires which we are thrilled to have here on REV, and she has dedicated the past couple of years to speaking to as many people as possible about our solutions to the climate crisis. At a moment when so many of us are despairing about the future, Lily is trying to offer optimism and actionable tasks for us all. Within her book Who Cares Wins, we learn so much about the brilliant people forging a more sustainable future and today we are going to discuss the movement towards a green future and how we can all engage with it. Also, how to not let fear and anxiety overtake our feelings towards the climate crisis and allow for apathy over action. Lily is a trailblazer and we can’t wait to share her story with you all as she’s such an inspiration. We hope this conversation will lead you to action and conversation as we need more than ever to be tackling the climate crisis together.
In this week’s episode, I’m thrilled to be joined by the incredible Lily Cole. Lily is a model, actor, filmmaker, all-round multihyphenate and wrote a book last summer called Who Cares Wins, chronicling a thousand ways in which we can halt the Sixth Mass Extinction. It was Lily’s extraordinary curiosity and desire to know what was happening in the world that led her to research the industry she was working in and explore the impact of capitalist businesses on people and planet. Initially tentative because she felt she was criticising the same industry she was working for, Lily decided to work for and create businesses that accelerated positive change, working with brands like The Body Shop and co-founding Impossible, a purpose-driven technology group and Wires Glasses, a sustainable eyewear company. In this episode, we discuss why Lily felt drawn to social impact work, what makes Lily hopeful about the future and how living a balanced life helps you connect to your purpose. The ask: Question the cultural conditioning we’ve all received and be independent in your thinking, this is a way to find your inner truth.Do you have a comment, question or would you like to share your own advice on Starting Somewhere? How do we merge indigenous intelligence and modern technology to co-create better societies? In this episode Amisha talks to Lily Cole, sometimes filmmaker, writer, public speaker, supermodel and actor. She is an advocate for sociopolitical and environmental issues and a patron of the Environmental Justice Foundation. She co-founded Impossible: a technology company that solves social and environmental problems. Lily's most recent book and companion podcast, ‘Who Cares Wins: Reasons for Optimism in Our Changing World', is a rousing call to action that will leave you feeling hopeful that we can make a difference. Amisha and Lily explore the idea of co-creating communities that are powered by our commonalities, indigenous intelligence and modern technology. Lily talks about her personal observations gathered during times spent with different indigenous communities. She speaks of the intelligence rooted in egalitarian value systems of indigenous cultures, the reverence and understanding of the natural world, storytelling and spirituality as powerful offerings to modern society lacking collective values systems. Lily shares her experience and challenges building Impossible, applying cutting edge tech to build a digital community and gift economy. Together they reflect that we don't need expensive apparatus to encourage a shift of consciousness and the activation of generous community spirit. It is the combination of all instruments and skills available to humankind that will afford us the co-creation of new types of conscious consumerism and dynamic communities for the future. We learn that listening to each other, taking small actions and making more conscious lifestyle choices aligned with our personal truths, are the mirrors of hope that will affect change of the mainstream and the political economic status quo, so we may conceptualise new outcomes for society. Welcome to episode #769 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #769 - Host: Mitch Joel. These past few years have seen many fascinating books in the non-fiction and business book genre. Look no further than the archive of podcasts and conversations that have taken place right here. With that, James Suzman's latest book, Work - A Deep History, from the Stone Age to the Age of Robots, seems to be the one that has me most excited (and the one I tend to recommend when asked). What Yuval Noah Harari did to explain humanity with Sapiens, James has done the same with work. It's a book that still rolls around in my mind like a marble (and it will keep you thinking too). James is an anthropologist who first wrote the book, Affluence Without Abundance - The disappearing world of the Bushmen in 2017. James was the first social anthropologist to work in Namibia's eastern Omaheke among "Southern Ju/'hoansi", where he exposed the brutal marginalisation of San people who had lost their lands to white cattle ranchers and pastoralist Herero people. James has worked tirelessly to help the communities in Namibia. In 2007, Suzman joined De Beers, where, as global head of public affairs, he developed the company's award-winning sustainability functions. In 2013 Suzman and Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales teamed up with Lily Cole to launch Impossible.com at the Cambridge Union. As we all ponder the future of work, let's dig deep into how we work and why we work. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:00:08. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. Feel free to connect to me directly on Facebook here: Mitch Joel on Facebook. or you can connect on LinkedIn. ...or on Twitter. Here is my conversation with James Suzman. Work - A Deep History, from the Stone Age to the Age of Robots. Affluence Without Abundance - The disappearing world of the Bushmen. In this week’s episode, Anna Jones is joined by actress, model, entrepreneur and author, Lily Cole. In their conversation, Lily talks about entrepreneurship, activism, the environment and sustainability, giving us a great insight into her book, ‘Who Cares Wins: Reasons For Optimism in Our Changing World.’ Anna and Lily also discuss developing resilience and practical tips for what we can all be doing differently to help redesign a hopeful future. In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew talks with anthropologist James Suzman about his new book, Work: A Deep History, From the Stone Age to the Age of Robots. With a head full of Laurens van der Post and half an anthropology degree from St Andrews University under his belt, James Suzman hitched a ride into Botswana’s eastern Kalahari in June 1991. He has been working with the Bushmen ever since. He remains involved in a number of Kalahari initiatives through the Cambridge based research and support organisation he heads, Anthropos. James is an anthropologist and the author of Affluence Without Abundance: The disappearing world of the Bushmen published by Bloomsbury in 2017. He is the nephew of Janet Suzman and great-nephew of Helen Suzman. Suzman was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and educated at Michaelhouse. He graduated with an MA (Hons) in social anthropology from the University of St Andrews in 1993. He was awarded a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in 1996. Suzman was the first social anthropologist to work in Namibia's eastern Omaheke among "Southern Ju/'hoansi", where he exposed the brutal marginalisation of San people who had lost their lands to white cattle ranchers and pastoralist Herero people. In 1998 Suzman was appointed to lead the landmark study, "The Regional Assessment of the Status of the San in Southern Africa", based on an ACP/EU resolution. Suzman later led an assessment by Minority Rights Group International to assess how Namibia's ethnic minorities had fared in the first ten years of Namibian Independence. The subsequent report was published in 2002. Emerging during period of political upheaval in Namibia, it led to calls for the better protection of ethnic minorities in Namibia. The Namibian Government rejected the report's findings and the President, Sam Nujoma, accused Suzman of amplifying "ethnic tensions". In 2001, Suzman was awarded the Smuts Commonwealth Fellowship in African Studies at the University of Cambridge. Suzman later established a program to establish opportunities for Hai//om San to benefit from tourism revenues in Etosha National Park. He was also involved in the dispute that arose as a result of the illegal relocation of Gwi and Gana San from Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve. He was highly critical of the Botswana Government's actions and, later, Survival International's campaign, which he claimed undermined ongoing negotiations between the Botswana Government and a coalition of organisations supporting the evicted San. Survival International, in turn, criticised Suzman and members of the negotiating team led by Ditshwanelo, The Botswana Centre for Human Rights of complicity with the Botswana Government. In 2007, Suzman joined De Beers, where, as global head of public affairs, he developed the company's award-winning sustainability functions. He resigned in 2013. In 2013 Suzman and Jimmy Wales teamed up with Lily Cole to launch Impossible.com at the Cambridge Union.[citation needed] In the same year he was invited to deliver the second Protimos Lecture at the Parliament Chamber of London's Inner Temple. Suzman has published widely on San and other issues in academic journals, magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times. In 2017 he published Affluence Without Abundance: The Disappearing World of the Bushmen. Work: A History of How We Spend Our Time, was published in September 2020. Learn more about your ad choices. Why should we be optimistic about the solutions to climate change? Why is positivity more likely to give us better results and what does the latest research show? We talk to Lily Cole about everything from rewilding to the power of technology, the role of food, the limits of the individual, eco-anxiety, conscious consumerism, green washing and how contradictory and imperfect many of the solutions are. Plus what Elon Musk thinks and how hard it was to follow Greta Thunberg’s advice. Lily Cole: Who Cares Wins See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The model and activist speaks with BoF Founder and Editor-in-Chief Imran Amed about the lessons she learnt while writing her new book Who Cares Wins. LONDON, United Kingdom — Lily Cole was once on the side of every bus, fronting the industry’s biggest fashion campaigns. But the more time Cole spent in the industry, the more she became aware of widespread problems and structural inequalities that prop up its glamorous facade. She cut back on modelling jobs and instead prioritised working on improving the fashion system from within. In the latest episode of the BoF Podcast, Lily Cole speaks with BoF Founder and Editor-in-Chief Imran Amed about the lessons she learned while writing her new book Who Cares Wins: Reasons For Optimism in Our Changing World, published by Penguin, a call to action that emphasises the importance of optimism and collaboration in times of uncertainty. The fashion industry must grapple with the role consumer culture plays in upholding social, environmental and ethical problems. “There is a practical need for new stuff that we don’t want to shut down entirely, so while we’re making it in a better way,” said Cole. “Equally, can we think of new business models that don’t require people to buy new things to make them economically sustainable?” These may include more transparent supply chains or adopting a circular business model. The very way progress is measured must also be reconsidered. Economic growth must be replaced by alternative metrics like happiness, health and environmental wellbeing. “It’s about quality rather than quantity… about loving material things more,” Cole told Amed. “The more you love something the more you respect it.” For consumers, buying fewer products of higher value is less wasteful and also places more emphasis on the artisanal craftsmanship of each garment. Cole is optimistic about the future generation of consumers who put more emphasis on sustainability. When the scandal broke that Boohoo paid workers less than minimum wage for example, the ultra fast fashion e-tailer’s share price plummeted. This, Cole said, indicates that the market expects consumers to stop shopping from unethical brands. “It’s a tangible reflection that people do care when they are given information,” she said. If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink and waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, he scratches away at his reworking of the comic medieval poem The Owl and the Nightingale. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, music, art, sheds, sherry, owls, nightingales and to throw light on some of the poem's internal themes. So when Lily Cole - model, actress and entrepreneur - extended an invite for him to visit her shed, he couldn't refuse. With a touch of shed envy, Simon discovers that Lily Cole's own writing shed has a wood-burning stove and superb views. Their conversation ranges from the true story of her discovery as a model at 14, wearing dramatic clothes and accidents on the catwalk, to working with tribes in the Amazon. From environmental concerns to running a business, from being bullied at school to a Cambridge degree.
Poet Laureate Simon Armitage is a former probation officer, DJ and a poet celebrated for his witty and profound take on modern life. In this podcast, he invites guests to join him in the writing shed in his garden to talk about life, language and the human voice. Surrounded on all sides by the Pennine hills and the Pennine weather, Simon welcomes, even encourages, the distractions his guests offer through talk of music, art, sheds, sherry and his latest poetic undertaking: a translation of the Middle English poem The Owl and the Nightingale. Over 12 episodes, guests include acclaimed spoken word performer Kate Tempest, Turner Prize recipient Antony Gormley, model and actress Lily Cole, DJ and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, actress Maxine Peake, poet Jackie Kay and World Record beatboxing champion Testament.

Lily Cole rose to fame as a model. She was the youngest model to appear on the cover of British Vogue, and was listed by French Vogue as one of the top 30 models of the 2000s. Her pictures, shot by some of photography's greatest names (think Tim Walker, Nick Knight, Steven Meisel) are some of the most memorable in the business, but these days Lily has other fish to fry. An environmental advocate, actor, writer and filmmaker, she is also a social entrepreneur. She is the founder of Impossible.com, a B Corp that uses technology to solve social and environmental problems. It began as a platform for the gift economy and today, she says, is focused on "trying to use tech in a positive way, and doing that through collaborations." In this lovely and intriguing Episode, we discuss Lily's love for nature and the ways in which that informs the work she does today. We talk climate change and the power of positive messaging. We get into frameworks for business with puropse, the need to rethink how we measure success and encouraging more women to enter the tech world. And fashion, natch. This is a slightly different episode. I interview artist and activist Lily Cole and British fashion designer Henry Holland and a handful of other people who are all behind BRITA’S #SWAPFORGOOD campaign. This campaign is to raise awareness of the 7.7 billion single-use plastic water bottles that end up in seas and landfill every year and the fact that by 2050 there is a good chance there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Pretty horrifying stats. Henry Holland and BRITA have teamed up to create two powerful slogan tees that were made using plastic that might otherwise have ended up in the sea and landfill. The limited edition t-shirts will be sold on HouseofHolland.co.uk from 20th July, at £30, with profits donated to the Marine Conservation Society (@MCS). In this episode we talk tips on how live more consciously, how plastic waste is harming our planet and how something as simple as having a refillable water bottle means you aren’t just using plastic bottles once and then binning them.
