We are in conversation with Sicilian artist and scholar Elisa Giardina Papa whose practice explores subjects that resist definition. Elisa lives and works between New York and Sant'Ignazio, Sicily, and teaches Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. She was one of the artists invited by curator Cecilia Alemani to exhibit in the main international exhibition of the 59th Venice Art Biennale in 2022, The Milk of Dreams. Our conversation delves into the first two works in her trilogy set in Sicily—installations that blend myth, memory, and submerged histories, both literal and metaphorical. In She Flickered In and Out of History, Elisa explores the story of a short-lived volcanic island that emerged between Tunisia and Sicily in 1831. Claimed by various European powers before disappearing beneath the sea just five months later, the island becomes a symbol of ungovernability and resistance to imperialism. We also discuss U Scantu: A Disorderly Tale, presented at the Venice Biennale 2022, which reimagines the mythic figure of the Donna di Fora—queer, multispecies women healers—drawing on both oral folklore and Inquisition archives. Set against the backdrop of the postmodern town of Gibellina, the work brings together sonic street culture, ceramics, and archival fragments to challenge how histories are told. Elisa reflects on her Sicilian upbringing, the layered cultural influences of the island, and her interest in forms of knowledge that defy categorisation. Together we explore what it means to live, think, and create on the edges — where ground shifts, language carries memory and stories flicker in and out of view.

At a retreat organized by the Heroic Hearts Project, Mike and other veterans stepped back into their traumas through a supervised psilocybin mushroom ceremony.“I was faced with an extremely concentrated experience of fear,” he says. The experience led him to a profound realization: “The tiny bits of fear that I feel daily, that force me to keep my walls up and protect myself and keep tension within the body — it fucking hit me in the face. In football we often speak of sudden change. This can be described as a turning point where your team fumbles the ball or throws an interception. Our guest this week knows all about sudden change on the field and from a personal standpoint. Frank Giardina has been involved in athletes for over 40 years but in 2015 he experienced sudden change when he suffered a stroke. It was a turning point in his journey but not in his desire to Power Up for Christ.    Guest Bio: Frank Giardina has worked as a college football and basketball broadcaster. and athletic administrator, for the last 45 years.  Worked at Marshall University, East Carolina University and Penn State University.  Frank also has worked as a broadcaster for the ESPN Sports Properties, the Big Ten Network and for many years with Sports Spectrum radio. He is a member of the Broadcasting Hall of Fame in the state of West Virginia. Member of the Marshall University School of Journalism Hall of Fame. Frank suffered a massive stroke on Valentine's Day, 2015. I couldn't help but think of Tory Giardina when Cheryl and I launched our sexy summer series. I'm excited to have her on with us to talk about pleasure and to talk about the joys of loving our body and being in our body. I met Tory when we both lived in Brooklyn. We lost touch for a while, but we've reunited and I'm so happy to share her with you as she talks about her self exploratory journey and what she's done since we first met. We talk about how she got the nickname “Death Doula” and why that makes perfect sense. Tory was having a conversation with her Mom when she had an aha-moment that changed the trajectory of her life. She learned over the next several years that what she was doing was feeling like a death star and dancing became her way out. But over the next few years, as Covid hit, Tory felt like she was burning her house down, and then rebuilding. A friend of hers watched from the sidelines and offered to work with her. She did a sacred Yoni body work ritual on Tory and as she explains she “went from dead to radiant in like in two hours”.We also get into what it really means to be a witch. Tory has coined the term “Woman In TouCH”. She says, “I'm a witch, I'm a healer, and my focus is on connection related to sexuality. It's about integration. It's a holistic process of becoming who you really are. Really at its essence,what I call my work is rituals and ceremonies for liberation.”In this episode we talk about being in a very dark place, what it takes to come out of that, and what it feels like to be on the other side. It's a journey. One that we have to do ourselves, but not alone.
