She opens up without filter, and she issues a flirty invitation on the chorus, “Turn the lights low, love me slo-mo.”About the song, she commented, “It started with me playing piano chords. I was vibing over the harmonies and finding the mood. It's more of a sexy and vibey song. It's about this feeling when you meet someone and connect. Dear Listeners,Our special guest this week is Allen Barton, Owner/CEO of the Beverly Hills Playhouse.Allen is a nationally known acting teacher, a Steinway Artist (concert pianist), and an accomplished playwright. We won't hold his Harvard pedigree against him, for Allen is “fighting the good fight” for freedom of artistic expression in the theatre and broader Hollywood community.Courageously, after Covid shutdowns and being cancelled by many, Allen has kept the esteemed doors of the Beverly Hill Playhouse open, writing on his website (bhplayhouse.com): “At this stage (the physical stage at the BHP), anything goes. Any writer goes. Anything any writer wants to say — they get to say it, the actors get to act it.” The result: The Beverly Hills Playhouse is flourishing.Simply put: Allen is a great advocate for freedom. Mr. Horsley has crafted arrangements and orchestrated for popular musicians Michael Bublé, John Legend, Ben Folds and The Pet Shop Boys. He has also scored 25 films and his work has been screened at every major film festival around the world. Chad Lawson, a Steinway Artist and composer, has released numerous number one recordings including his most recent release, “You Finally Knew” (Decca Records/Universal), recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. He has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's All Things Considered and is usually found on concert stages around the world (at least...until Covid hit the playbill). He began the podcast, Calm it Down, after receiving countless emails from listeners detailing how his music is helping them calm their anxieties and emotional struggles. “I simply had to do something.” he states. “I wanted to go deeper in trying to help others in their most difficult times of life.” During the pandemic, Lawson widened his reach with the launch of “Calm It Down” in September 2020, a turn of events that's further heightened his sense of purpose. A fully independent one-man show, “Calm It Down” finds Lawson expounding on an inspired range of topics (forgiveness and anxiety, butterflies and Snoopy), setting his insightful yet charmingly candid ruminations against a tranquil backdrop of his own solo piano music. Referring to himself as “an extreme empath by nature,” Lawson began classical training in piano as a child and later developed a thriving career as a jazz pianist, but eventually felt compelled to follow an entirely new direction in his music. “The reason I stopped playing jazz is that I didn't feel it connected on an emotional level,” he says. “When I made my first solo piano album, I was incredibly sick with ulcerative colitis and found that creating this music was very healing to me. Then after I put it out, I started hearing from listeners who'd say things like ‘I just lost a loved one and felt like you were holding my hand through the most difficult time in my life.' That's when things started making sense for me, in terms of making emotion the core of everything I do.” As his audience grew exponentially, Lawson soon found himself featured on the likes of “CBS Sunday Morning” and NPR's “All Things Considered,” in addition to turning out a series of #1 releases and landing high-profile sync placements with such shows as “The Walking Dead” and “Viceland.” www.chadlawson.com calmitdownpodcast.com

TPP Team had a wonderful conversation with Mr. Geroge Ko: Young Steinway Artist/Composer/Improviser for this episode. George is a concert pianist pushing classical music forward by blending "Chopin-like virtuosity with the vast soundscapes of cinema." His music revolves around improvisation - a practice typically confined to jazz music - which he's brought into the realm of classical music. Many of his songs are one-take improvs, allowing maximum creativity and spontaneity. George has appeared on stages worldwide, from 2000-seat auditoriums to Carnegie Hall. In addition, his music has been heard at film festivals, television broadcasts, and music festivals in Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, and China. George is also a successful entrepreneur, having founded several companies and nonprofits. He received the CES Innovation Award in Robotics in 2019, the Harvard Gov 2.0 Award for innovation in politics, and a patent in data management. During the pandemic, despite his success in the tech and media sector, he realized his true calling was playing the piano, so he left his job and began focusing on playing piano professionally for the first time. He's now a Young Steinway artist. And Steinway has described him as "making classical music accessible and exciting for the masses.” In this episode, you will hear about George's complicated yet fulfilling relationship with the performing arts world, his discovery of his mission – entertaining his wide-range audience with his improvisatory skills on the piano as a classical pianist, his candid views about the trajectory of the classical music industry and more. [George Ko] Young Steinway Artist/Composer/Improviser

This episode was a total delight - not only did I get to interview the pianist Nicolas Horvath, who is a Steinway Artist and a fascinating musician, but we were also discussing the compositions of William Susman. Bill and I chatted for episodes 16 and 31 of Harmonious World and he was generous enough to introduce me to Nicolas (virtually, at least). These compositions on Quiet Rhythms Book 1 are stunning and Nicolas plays them with panache. Listen to the album if you can, but I hope you enjoy listening to the extracts you can hear before and after our conversation.Follow me on instagram.com/hilaryrwriterFollow me on facebook.com/HilaryRobertsonFreelanceWriterFollow me on twitter.com/hilaryrwriterDon't forget the Quincy Jones quote that sums up why I do this: "Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing."Support the show

Guest: Arturo O'Farrill, Founder, Artistic Director, Afro Latin Jazz Alliance; Professor, Global Jazz Studies, The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Arturo O'Farrill builds campfires and connects music, activism, and community to build momentum to change his areas of passion in the world -- especially in New York. He recalls his desires to conduct back at age 6 and breaking into his father's record collection and finding Seven Steps to Heaven, locking in his passion for music. He states with bold examples how "Happiness is marrying your conviction with your art," which frames most of his adult work. He speaks the vigor about the results of unbridled capitalism -- and does not mince words. Our GuestARTURO O'FARRILL, pianist, composer, and educator, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. An avid supporter of all the Arts, Arturo has performed with Ballet Hispanico, Ron Brown's EVIDENCE Dance company, and the Malpaso Dance Company, for whom he has written several ballets. Olga Scheps was born in Moscow in 1986, the daughter of two pianists, and discovered the instrument for herself at the age of four. She began studying the piano more intensively after her family moved to Germany in 1992. At an early age she had already developed her own unique style of keyboard playing, which combines intense emotiveness and powerful expressivity with extraordinary pianistic technique. Among those who discovered these talents was Alfred Brendel, who has encouraged the young pianist. A holder of scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, she completed her studies with Professor Pavel Gililov in her adopted home of Cologne in 2013, passing her Concert Examination with Distinction. She rounded out her training with Professor Arie Vardi and Professor Dmitri Bashkirov. Olga Scheps now performs with great success in world-famous concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie, the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Cadogan Hall London, the Zurich Tonhalle, and the Suntory Hall Tokyo. She is a sought-after guest at festivals like the Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kissinger Sommer, Heidelberger Frühling, Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Lucerne Festival am Piano, ACHTBRÜCKEN Festival in Cologne, Mozart Festival Würzburg, Mersin Festival in Turkey, and Menuhin Festival Gstaad. Since 2009 Olga Scheps has been an exclusive Sony Classical artist. Her debut album ‘Chopin' immediately won an ECHO Klassik award. The two recordings that followed, ‘Russian Album' (2010) and ‘Schubert' (2012), were also highly praised by the press. Her fourth Sony Classical CD was released early in 2014 and features Chopin's Piano Concertos nos. 1 and 2 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. The success of her solo-album ‘Vocalise', published in 2015, was surpassed by her latest album ‘Satie' which Olga Scheps has recorded on the occasion of the French composer's 150th birthday: It reached top 1 of the German classical music charts at first go. Her CD "Tchaikovsky" was released in October 2017 and she broke new ground with the album "100 % Scooter - Piano Only", on which she recorded arrangements of the most famous Scooter hits by Sven Helbig. In March 2019 Olga Scheps' album “Melody” was released, containing pieces spanning four centuries, from Bach to Aphex Twin. By the age of 19, Leonard Gilbert won four Canadian Music Competitions, won the 2010 Canadian Chopin Competitions, and became the first Canadian to represent Canada at the prestigious International Chopin Competition, viewed by most pianists to be the “Olympics” and “Paralympics” of classical music competitions. Join Amos Vang and Leonard Gilbert as the two classical concert pianists discuss in great detail the wondrous world of classical concert piano performance, the similarities between pianistic practice and athletic practice, the prestige of the International Chopin Competition, the philosophies of piano performance and virtuosity, the philosophies of piano technique and preparation, the centuries-long evolution of piano tuning and musical counterpoint, and the importance, benefits, and transferability of a classical music training into a legal career. 0:00 for the Introduction. 8:09 for the beginning of the interview. David Cutter comes from a lineage of great teachers and brings the artistry of playing the piano to his students. After years of formal instruction, performance experience and hard work, he has learned many of the secrets to playing the piano and he shares this rich oral tradition with his students.Over the last seven years David has gone back to studying classical music, working from the Well Prepared Pianist Curriculum. For almost three years he studied privately with Well Prepared Pianist author, composer and Steinway Artist, N. Jane Tan.After concluding study with Professor Tan, David has been practicing to assimilate and perfect the techniques learned. Performing, teaching and directing multi piano ensembles, David is dedicated to preserving the knowledge of how to play the piano and the oral tradition that’s come down from many teachers to the present.David’s twenty years of classroom teaching gives him the experience to know how to listen to a student, how to assess what is needed and how to quickly respond to the learning opportunity. He has also written educational courses during his career, most recently, a piano appreciation course for the Pasadena Senior Center. In his private piano teaching practice, David uses his creative problem solving skills to motivate students, particularly when they hit road blocks. He is open and flexible about how to work with each person, always starting with where the student is at. That way he discovers what works for a particular student and customizes lessons accordingly. “The Lady Plays,” is Robin's tribute to the Piano Queen, Marian McPartland. Robin taped a one-hour segment on Marian's program, NPR's Piano Jazz, twelve years ago, when her first book, Piano Girl, was published. “Marian's joy rubs off on me. Look at her go—here's a ninety-year-old woman playing piano the way she wants to. She has grown into her music and stayed young because of it. She listens, she responds, she encourages the rest of us to keep going. Marian doesn't need magic, luck, or soothing words to keep her plane in the sky, because she's the pilot. If there's a better role model for a musician, I don't know who it is." Sometimes poignant and often hilarious, Robin Meloy Goldsby, host of The Piano Girl Podcast ,reveals the comedies, tragedies, and mundane miracles witnessed from the business side of the Steinway. A pianist in lounges and lobbies around the world, Goldsby tells her stories by connecting people she has met with places she has played. Along the way she discovers the human side, for better or worse, of her audiences—mobsters and moguls, the down-and-out and downright scary, and ordinary people dealing with life in extraordinary ways. Her stories deliver insights into the art and craft of piano playing—and inspiring lessons in life—as she pursues her dreams on her own terms. Robin Meloy Goldsby is the author of Piano Girl; Waltz of the Asparagus People; Rhythm; and Manhattan Road Trip. She has appeared on National Public Radio's All Things Consideredand NPR's Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland. Robin is a Grammy-nominated lyricist. She is a Steinway Artist and cultural ambassador with artistic ties to both Europe and the USA; her newest solo piano album, Home and Away, launched at Buckingham Palace in November, 2017, at a gala hosted by HRH, the Prince of Wales, in honor of In Kind Direct, an organization that encourages corporate giving for social good. Robin currently performs plays about 150 live piano gigs a year at Excelsior Hotel Ernst in Cologne, Germany, and tours internationally with her popular concert/reading program. My guest today is Professor John Mortensen, a leading performer, scholar and teacher in classical or historic improvisation, Steinway Artist, Fulbright Scholar, and is a professor of Music at Cedarville University. His new book is “The Pianist's guide to Historic Improvisation”, published by Oxford University Press. Kate Boyd, Professor of Music at Butler University reviewed the book by saying, "This book fills an important niche in the world of piano and keyboard pedagogy. In each of the chapters Mortensen encourages the reader's creativity, simultaneously exposing the musical building blocks used by some of the great composers and allowing the reader to apply those same compositional techniques to improvising in a stylistically-appropriate way.” Noam Sivan, Professor of Piano Improvisation, Hochschule of Music and Performing Arts, Stuttgart reviewed the book saying, "Any language study based solely on reading without speaking, would be incomplete. Similarly, the study of improvisation is indispensable for learning music. In this important book John Mortensen wonderfully demystifies the creative process and presents a clear and gradual method for learning to speak the language of J. S. Bach and his contemporaries. Highly recommended!” It debuted at #1 on Amazon's Piano and Music Instruction category. ------- 1:41 What was the landscape for books on classical improvisation before the publishing of his book 3:35 How long did it take you to write the book, and did you have to revise the book as new information kept coming out? 4:22 Who is the book written for? 5:37 Does the book lean Italian or German in it's approach? 7:12 What prerequisites do you need to create a figuration prelude? 8:12 What harmonies do you need to know to start your figuration prelude? 10:01 How do you break up the chord and how many types of figurations that you can come up with? 10:46 The effectiveness of figuration preludes in getting newcomers to creating music right away 11:29 Why is Toccata chapter 2? 12:56 What's the amount of harmonic knowledge you need to improvise Toccatas? 13:37 Do you teach cadences in the book? 13:57 The Rule of the Octave and how important it is? 16:08 Which version of the Rule of the Octave do you want students to start with? 17:50 CPE Bach's multitude of Rule of Octave versions 18:51 Diminutions 21:19 What about 16th notes? 22:14 How do you avoid contrapuntal mistakes in improvisation? 23:37 Do you encourage students look at the piano literature and steal ideas? 24:23 Variations 27:48 What's the way to develop melodic lyricism? 31:42 How do I finger all these examples in the book? 32:36 Friedrich Erhard Niedt and the suite 35:52 Imitation 38:30 Counterpoint 39:57 Is Counterpoint not being taught correctly? 40:57 Partimento 42:27 The benefits of partimento with regular music students 45:09 The overwhelming positive feedback to classical improvisation 46:00 How does the scene compare to 10 years ago? 48:17 Schemata 50:00 Interest in traditional Irish music? 50:51 The parallels between Celtic improvisation and Classical improvisation 52:28 On being denied visiting a University because the top professor could not improvise 53:44 Is a classical improvisation renaissance happening? 54:20 Publishing with Oxford University Press? 55:52 What are your thoughts on hexachordal solfeggio practiced by the Neapolitans as researched by Nicholas Baragwanath? 58:57 Wrapping Up

Piano Girl Robin Meloy Goldsby's definition of an Accidental Insult: a comment that causes the recipient to say thank you and cringe at the same time. Most of the musicians she knows have developed thick skins underneath their little black dresses and tuxedos. Like it's not hard enough to smile and remember 3,000 tunes while playing for a chiropractor convention—they must also suffer the slings and arrows, the digs and dings, of well-meaning, slightly-idiotic customers. In Part Two of "The Accidental Insult," Goldsby describes an indirect meeting with Madonna and how the two of them have more in common than one might expect. Blond ambition, indeed. Piano Girl Robin Meloy Goldsby and her partner Joe get an exciting songwriting commission. The subject? World peace and brotherhood. It takes five songwriting sessions, a plate of cold gnocchi, three slices of stale pizza, a few bottles of wine and half a chicken, but eventually they come up with a suitable composition. They show up at a synagogue in Princeton, New Jersey, to present the song to the congregation at a special ceremony. And that's where things take a left turn. Robert Thies has been a friend of mine for about ten years or so. We see each other around town and the last time we worked together was on Happy Feet 2, with John Powell. Rob is a tremendous pianist with a great career. He won the Prokofiev competition, plays with the Phil and with many ensembles around town. He's a Steinway Artist, session player... and on and on. Rob is also just a plain old good guy, and I'm glad to be his friend. Thanks for listening and I hope you end up liking this guy as much as I do. Enjoy! George earned the title of Young Steinway Artist, appeared with Harvard’s prestigious River Charles Ensemble, the Carnegie Hall for more than half a dozen times, and Steinway Hall that led one critic to proclaim “a rising star if ever there was one.” With over 2,000 fans on Facebook, George continues his journey of spreading the word for classical music today. George had an unusual path to becoming a successful pianist. As a young boy, his mom refused to prescribe medication for his ADHD and instead invited a piano teacher to their home. What's the purpose of playing music for George? He says that it's about creating an experience that reminds the audience of something important in their lives, or inspires in some way. They are not only enjoying music as entertainment but a piece of reflection. We also talked about being Chinese / Asian American. George believes: "It is our duty to show people our culture. Being part of this ethnic group is part of being American. America is a melting pot - we are a group of people forming this wonderful fabric of culture and experience that supports one another. My favorite part is probably having George play along during the interview while he was giving examples or telling a story. Playing the piano is second nature to George that unexpectly integrated into our conversation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

Every artist has an epiphany. For classically-trained, award winning pianist Richard Glazier, it happened at age nine, when he saw the film “Girl Crazy” with a score by George & Ira Gershwin. So excited was he by the music he heard, Glazier was prompted to write a fan letter to famed lyricist Ira Gershwin. After corresponding with each other for three years, Gershwin invited his young friend, then 12 to meet him in Beverly Hills. During their visit Ira asked Glazier to play a Gershwin tune on the piano that once belonged to his brother legendary composer George Gershwin. Fueled by Ira's encouragement and interest, Glazier dedicated himself that very day to the Gershwin repertoire and the American Popular Songbook, eventually becoming one of the genre's leading authorities..Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Glazier began studying piano when he was 6 years old. Trained in the classics, Glazier earned Bachelor and Master degrees in Piano Performance from Indiana University School of Music, Bloomington, where he studied with famed pianist and teacher, Menaham Pressler, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition to Ira Gershwin's blessings, Glazier has received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music for his contributions to the American Popular Song. He also won several major international piano competitions including the Pro Musicis International Award and the National Federation of Music Clubs' Grand Prize. He also was selected as a Steinway Artist.Glazier's concerts have inspired two national television specials: "From Gershwin to Garland A Musical Journey With Richard Glazier, which was broadcast on PBS stations throughout the country in 2010& "From Ragtime to Reel Time Richard Glazier in Concert, which starts airing on PBS stations in March 2012.
