It's Wildcard Wednesday!Today, a look at the sixth commandment of Self-Brain Surgery: I must stop making an operation out of everything.Scripture: Isaiah 30:15Article about Dr. Peter JannettaBook Mentioned: The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain SurgeryI must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.I must believe that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain. I must believe that most of my thoughts are untrue.I must believe that my brain is designed to heal (Ryker's Regular Legs)I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now. (No Tomorrow Tax! Corollary: I must not treat bad feelings with bad operations.) Mental health problems like depression and anxiety affect enormous numbers of people and severely interfere with their lives. By contrast, we don't see similar levels of physical ill health in young people. At any point in time, something like 20% of young people are working through anxiety or depression that's seriously interfering with their lives — but nowhere near 20% of people in their 20s have severe heart disease or cancer or a similar failure in a key organ of the body other than the brain. From an evolutionary perspective, that's to be expected, right? If your heart or lungs or legs or skin stop working properly while you're a teenager, you're less likely to reproduce, and the genes that cause that malfunction get weeded out of the gene pool.So why is it that these evolutionary selective pressures seemingly fixed our bodies so that they work pretty smoothly for young people most of the time, but it feels like evolution fell asleep on the job when it comes to the brain? Why did evolution never get around to patching the most basic problems, like social anxiety, panic attacks, debilitating pessimism, or inappropriate mood swings? For that matter, why did evolution go out of its way to give us the capacity for low mood or chronic anxiety or extreme mood swings at all?Today's guest, Randy Nesse — a leader in the field of evolutionary psychiatry — wrote the book Good Reasons for Bad Feelings, in which he sets out to try to resolve this paradox.Links to learn more, summary, and full transcript. In the interview, host Rob Wiblin and Randy discuss the key points of the book, as well as:How the evolutionary psychiatry perspective can help people appreciate that their mental health problems are often the result of a useful and important system. How evolutionary pressures and dynamics lead to a wide range of different personalities, behaviours, strategies, and tradeoffs. The missing intellectual foundations of psychiatry, and how an evolutionary lens could revolutionise the field. How working as both an academic and a practicing psychiatrist shaped Randy's understanding of treating mental health problems. The “smoke detector principle” of why we experience so many false alarms along with true threats. The origins of morality and capacity for genuine love, and why Randy thinks it's a mistake to try to explain these from a selfish gene perspective.Evolutionary theories on why we age and die.And much more.Producer and editor: Keiran HarrisAudio Engineering Lead: Ben CordellTechnical editing: Dominic ArmstrongTranscriptions: Katy Moore

How could a good life include one with anger, or jealousy, or spite? In Dancing with the Devil: Why Bad Feelings Make Life Good (Oxford UP, 2023), Krista Thomason flips the script on popular ways of dealing with our emotions, including neo-Stoicism, mindfulness, and even the prosperity gospel. She makes the case that we should get rid of the double standard we have towards "good" and "bad" emotions, and that we should not aim to be emotional saints. Instead, because "bad" emotions are an essential part of our attachments to our selves, they help us discover what we care about. Thomason, who is an associate professor of philosophy at Swarthmore College, guides the reader through philosophical traditions regarding the relation of emotion to reason and the various approaches thinkers have come up with to deal with our "bad" emotions. Carrie Figdor is professor of philosophy at the University of Iowa. Learn more about your ad choices. As you can imagine, many fans were disappointed, including a caller who paid $1500 per ticket for him and his kid to go. Load management is a huge problem in the NBA. How was your Summer?! Good? Great! Mine was an emotional rollercoaster mostly a slow disassociated climb ending in a free fall of despair and identity crisis! Wheeee!! Fun! I talk about the dangers of trying to compartmentalise sadness or bad feelings (and why it's absolutely to be expected that so many of us are still struggling more than we used to) How unhelpful tendency to isolate ourselves when we are drinking from The Cocktail of Bad Feelings and how to find good friends, even if you never leave your house. In part two, I talk about the small shift that got me back on track to feeling a lot more like myself and how your own shift might be so much more attainable than you might imagine. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kirsty-sayer/support
Welcome to Best Friend Therapy, where we chat about what's on our minds, to get deeper in our minds, and this week we're bringing you a Feelings 101 - everything you ever needed to know about what we feel, why we feel, and how feelings can be our best guides when it comes to meeting our needs.Sadness, anger, fear, joy, jealousy, envy, guilt or shame. Pick your poison. There's a feeling for every situation and an action required for every feeling. This week we join the dots to help you know what action you need to take, to feel more authentic and empowered in life.Emma explains the 'core feelings' and the needs they signal, and Elizabeth tries to disarm her with the cuteness of a baby deer.---This week we reference some previous episodes of Best Friend Therapy: Games, Competition, Imposter Syndrome from Season 1, and Jealousy from Season 2."Good Reasons for Bad Feelings" is by Randolph M. Nesse: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Reasons-Bad-Feelings-Evolutionary/dp/0241291089Accessible and informative summaries of Richard Erskine's work on 'Racket Feelings', Jackie Schiff's work on 'Reparenting' and Eric Berne's 'Parent-Adult-Child' model can all be found in a fantastic book called "TA Today" by Ian Stewart and Vann Joines: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Today-New-Introduction-Transactional-Analysis/dp/1870244028And thank you Merriam-Webster for confirming the true etymology of the 'fawn' response: Middle English speakers adapted an Old English word meaning "to rejoice" to create the verb faunen, which shifted in spelling over time to become fawn. That Old English word, in turn, derives from fagan, meaning "glad." Fagan is also an ancestor of the English adjective fain, whose earliest (now obsolete) meaning is "happy" or "pleased." This fawn is not, however, related to the noun fawn, referring to a young deer. For that we can thank the Latin noun fetus, meaning "offspring."
