A. In this episode of the BioAudio podcast we take a look at the emerging field of evolutionary medicine. This discipline asks not "how should we cure X?" but "why are we susceptible to X in the first place, what adaptation has gone wrong?" and these new types of questions are leading to interesting ideas about treatment of common problems. Evolutionary medicine asks us to rethink the question of why we get sick.

Clare Louise share about why an evolutionary perspective is important, sleep through an evolutionary lens, and the physiology of sleep and how the modern culture gets in the way. Interwoven through all of this, she talks about the stress response and Aware Parenting and the innate healing response. Our conversation covered a wide range of topics, from the sense of safety acquired from living and sleeping amongst a community of 30 or 40 people, the effect of electricity and other modern conveniences, and cots. HEALTH OPTIMISATION MEDICINE AND PRACTICE! THE FIRST MULTI - OMICS CLINICAL SPECIALTY WITH A DIFFERENCE! Creating a standard of care in health, not disease. Back on the show is the amazing Dr Ted Achacoso. The genius..Dr Ted as he is affectionately known as, is an incredible human being, who I was immediately fascinated by, for reasons not only that he has an incredible IQ, but because of his beliefs, his amazing way of being a fearless leader and mentor to all that he comes in contact with, but also for his humour and sense of fun and lightheartedness. I'm very lucky to be able to work with Dr Ted as his CEO of HOMeHOPe here in Australia, a non for profit organisation. We chat - - The History of HOMeHOPe - creating a standard of care in health, not disease. - Framework of biohacking and difference of biohacking - Functional medicine difference take out the points of confusion - Speciality on its own. - What is HOMe/ HOPe - the speciality on its own and mini courses - Why this way of practicing medicine? - Complete health care difference - salutongenesis, multi-omics clinical specialty - Protocols and combination of HOMeHOPe with other health technologies. - Troscriptions - How different Troscriptions are from up and coming psychedelic therapies. Pioneered in the Philippines over a decade ago, Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe, for physicians) and Health Optimization Practice (HOPe, for non-physician health care practitioners) is the first and only multi-omics clinical specialty that defines and delivers the standard of care in health, not disease. A self-paced online course on “Essential Health Optimization Medicine and Practice.” This has just been completed with seven modules (the Seven Pillars of HOMe/HOPe --- Clinical Metabolomics, Bioenergetics (Mitochondria), Gut-Immune System (Microbiota), Clinical Exposomics, Epigenetics, Chronobiology, and Evolutionary Medicine), along with the accompanying certification pathways and CME credits. A global effort is being made by Health Optimization Medicine and Practice Association (a US-based, tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization) to train physicians and non-physician health care providers in this new clinical framework. It is during the one-on-one virtual preceptorships that local clinical metabolomics lab options and vetted supplement sources are discussed, as their availability are country-dependent. The global effort currently extends to Europe, UK, Australia, US, and Asia.
About Dr Ted: Dr. Ted Achacoso attained a college degree in biology at the age of 18 and a doctor of medicine at the age of 22. Welcome to the podcast Associate Professor of Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara, Dr. Amy Boddy. Dr. Boddy specializes in evolutionary approaches to human health and researches topics like comparative oncology, maternal fetal transfer and conflict, and much more. Dr. Boddy discusses her academic journey as a first generation student, starting with community college in Michigan and then onto Wayne State where she received her BA and PhD. Dr. Boddy has always been drawn to human health, biology and evolution, but it wasn't until her senior year of college she discovered how she could use an anthropological lens to study the questions she wanted to. We then move into her experience as a post-doc and moving internationally with a young child. Prior to her appointment at UCSB, she worked at the Comparative Oncology Center at Arizona State University where she was a professor. While she still works with this team today, in 2017 she accepted a professor position at UCSB. Currently she teaches classes like Evolutionary Medicine, Human Reproductive Ecology, Genetics, and runs a great lab on campus. We talk the transition from ASU to UCSB, quarter versus semester system from student and professorial point of view, as well as her takeaways from online learning. Currently, she and a team are investigating microchimerism, or the transfer of cells between mother and baby during pregnancy. She has obtained blood samples from a hospital in Santa Barbara to further research these fascinating cells and their role in immune response. In the podcast we discuss with Dr Randolph Nesse his foundational and pioneering work in evolutionary medicine and his work with patients. He talks with his patients and explains to them that, in many cases, their disorders are not a disease or some kind of failing, as they have been told by other practitioners, but rather a natural and inherently useful response that has “gone overboard”. Evolution makes women on average twice as prone to excessive anxiety as men for good reason. Nesse reports that patients who experience panic attacks are invariably “normalised and empowered” by such a perspective.Similarly, those who experience prolonged low mood may be, if not comforted or cured, then perhaps illuminated by the notion that their state of mind has a role to play in Darwinian terms. Nesse presents the evidence to show that the mechanisms of despair have evolved to force us to realign our goals and desires: we would never be forced to make positive choices to influence our circumstances were it not for the anger at loss in our lives or the pain of not reaching our goals.Randolph M. Nesse, MD is Research Professor of Life Sciences at Arizona State University, where he became the Founding Director of the Center for Evolution Medicine in 2014.  He was previously Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan where he led the Evolution and Human Adaptation Program and helped to establish one of the first anxiety disorders clinics.  His research on the neuroendocrinology of anxiety evolved into studies on why aging exists. Those studies led to collaboration with the evolutionary biologist George Williams on Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine, a book that initiated much new work in the field of evolutionary medicine. His research is on how selection shapes mechanisms that regulate defenses such as pain, fever, anxiety and low mood, and how social selection shaped human capacities for morality.  His larger mission is to establish evolutionary biology as a basic science for medicine.  Dr. Nesse is the Founding President of the International Society for Evolution, Medicine & Public Health, a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Sciences, and an elected Fellow of the AAAS. His new book, Good Reasons for Bad Feelings: Insights from the Frontier of Evolutionary Psychiatry shows how asking evolutionary questions about why mental disorders exist can make psychiatry more effective. Bio for Randolph M. Why All Meat Is Not Created Equal | This episode is brought to you by InsideTrackerThere is a lot of controversy around whether meat is good or bad for our health but what if this is the wrong question to be asking? For example, grass-fed beef is extremely different from conventionally raised beef, and people buying grass-fed beef often have many other healthy habits that those buying Big Macs may not. Yet, nutrition research doesn’t take many of these variables into account. This is why when it comes to eating meat, like with all other foods, focusing on quality more than quantity is key to creating good health. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman talks with Chris Kresser about how the type of meat being eaten is an important focus missing from many big dietary studies and they break down the myths and stigmas around red meat consumption. Dr. Hyman also speaks with Fred Provenza about how the way we eat meat, along with what the animal eats, can make such a difference when it comes to our health.Chris Kresser is the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Cure. He is known for his in-depth research uncovering myths and misconceptions in modern medicine and providing natural health solutions with proven results. Chris was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, and his blog is one of the top-ranked natural health websites in the world. He recently launched Kresser Institute, an organization dedicated to reinventing healthcare and reversing chronic disease by training healthcare practitioners in functional and evolutionary medicine. Chris lives in Berkeley, California, with his wife and daughter.Fred grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us AboutRediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-authored with Michel Meuret). Dr. George Diggs is a well-respected, well-researched evolutionary biologist and botanist who has taught at Austin College in Sherman, Texas for 40 years. I took my first evolutionary biology and ecology class from him over 30 years ago. His research interests include evolution as it relates to human health, climate change, the plants of Texas, and biogeography. He has co-authored four books and nearly 40 scientific articles, traveling and completing research in all seven continents. One of his latest books is The Hunter-Gatherer Within: Health and the Natural Human Diet, co-authored with Dr. Kerry Brock. For the past 15 years he has focused on Evolutionary Medicine and Ancestral Health and recently he helped establish an undergraduate program in Public Health at Austin College In this episode, George bridges a clear understanding between evolutionary and environmental science, public health and human behavior. We discuss how we evolved genetically and culturally from our origins in small hunter-gatherer groups to where we are today, comparing the stark differences between the two, noting very different individual and group selective pressures that not only explains why we engage in behaviors we know are harmful to us, but what we can do about them. Along these lines, he clearly explains important concepts in evolutionary and behavioral science, such as cognitive bias, evolutionary mismatch, cultural catalysis and epigenetics, and then uses this understanding as the foundation to reflect on needed policy shifts. George Diggs is one of those great contributors to life that not only has decades of experience under his belt as a research scientist, but is at heart a well-loved and respected mentor and teacher to thousands who genuinely cares about the welfare of others.

On today's episode, I have another customer success series episode.  Today and the show, I have Nicole Jardim. Nicole and I worked together over this year to launch her book, Fix Your Period, and an accompanying group coaching program.  It was definitely an interesting time beginning this project and being in the depths of this project while the world was changing with COVID.  It was very challenging and we had to make lots of different pivots, but in the end, her book was very successful in the launch and led to a powerful program that has totally transformed how Nicole is running her business and where she's at coming into 2021.  We are going to break all of that down for you.   Nicole Jardim is a Certified Women's Health and Functional Nutrition Coach with a specialty in hormonal and reproductive health. In 2010 she trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health coach. Shortly after that, she completed a 3-month apprenticeship at a women's holistic health center in New York City. She then did a 1-year training program with Dr. Sara Gottfried, MD (author of The Hormone Cure & The Hormone Reset Diet). She followed that up with an additional 1-year women's health and nutrition coaching certification program with the Integrative Women's Health Institute. In 2016 she completed a 1-year training program with the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris KresserAs humans, we often fall into black and white thinking. It can be easy to let the constant waterfall of media information and social snippets wash over us without stopping to think of the full context. In this age of COVID-19, though, it’s more important than ever to pause and look at what the science really has to say. When we slip into confirmation bias and seek out answers that solidify what we already believe, we lose the ability to think critically. Now, more than ever, is the time to change that so we can overcome this pandemic. That’s exactly what Dhru and Chris Kresser talk about on this episode of The Broken Brain Podcast. Chris Kresser is the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure. In this episode, Dhru and Chris jump into an open conversation about the most pressing COVID topics and what the latest research is showing. Starting with vitamin D, they look at some dramatic results of several studies, with the takeaway being that a majority of COVID patients have been found to have vitamin D deficiency, and those who are vitamin D deficient have higher inflammatory markers and a higher risk of death. They discuss the science behind mask wearing and why it’s a helpful piece of stopping the spread of coronavirus, but only one piece. They also talk about the latest findings of the vaccine trials and what we know, and don’t know. In this episode, we dive into: -Vitamin D levels among asymptomatic and critically ill COVID-19 patients and the correlation with inflammatory markers (12:56) -Randomized control trial of vitamin D (17:26)-Vitamin D testing and supplement recommendations (32:40) -Why masks are getting so much attention when the data is nuanced (35:28) -The research on COVID-19 and masks (46:06)-COVID-19 vaccine—what we know and what we don’t know (1:08:14) -Concerns around the safety of a vaccine when it’s developed so quickly (1:15:37) -Oxford AstraZeneca phase III vaccine trail and how it differs from Pfizer and Moderna vaccine trails (1:30:42)-Rapid at home COVID testing (1:41:01)-What you can do today to take control of your health (1:49:03) For more on Chris Kresser, be sure to follow him on Instagram @chriskresser, on Facebook @chriskresserlac, on Twitter @chriskresser, on YouTube @chriskresser, and through his website https://chriskresser.com. Do anxiety and depression have an evolutionary function? Why do we sleep? And is the explosion of neurological conditions we now see perhaps a result of selective processes?  In the third and final episode of the Evolutionary Medicine series, Dr Mark Donohoe dives into why dysfunction may be happening as a result of evolution occurring faster than humans can adapt, resulting in widespread depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and neurodiversity, and why it is important to take natural cycles and seasons into account when treating patients, rather than offering therapies designed merely to cover them up.  Using Dr Donohoe's functional approach to symptomatology, we'll delve into WHY the body responds to various disease states and how we can both assess and intervene to bring the patient back to normal functioning.  Find today's transcript and show notes here: https://www.fxmedicine.com.au/podcast/evolutionary-medicine-part-3-dr-mark-donohoe *****DISCLAIMER: The information provided on FX Medicine is for educational and informational purposes only. How do we determine when intervention is necessary in our health and wellbeing treatment strategy? In our quest to conquer pathological processes, are we overlooking the fundamentals within evolutionary biology and thus potentially doing a disservice to our patient's health?  In today's podcast, part one of a three part interview series, Dr Mark Donohoe explains the concept of evolutionary medicine and the adaptive response. Mark illustrates how our adaptation response may lead to disease and dysfunction but that equally, there is value in looking beyond symptoms to discover the “why” of illness and how we may work in with it, rather than against it.  Find today's transcript and show notes here: https://www.fxmedicine.com.au/podcast/evolutionary-medicine-part-1-dr-mark-donohoe *****DISCLAIMER: The information provided on FX Medicine is for educational and informational purposes only. Nutrition experts have long debated whether there is an optimal diet that humans evolved to eat. Studies show that modern hunter-gatherer groups across the globe generally have phenomenal heart and metabolic health, yet they eat a variety of diets, and tend to avoid the chronic diseases that kill most Americans. In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Anahad O’Connor and Chris Kresser about modern hunter-gatherer societies and why they tend to avoid chronic diseases, why one specific diet is not right for everyone, and how to personalize your diet to fit your lifestyle, genetic blueprint, and specific health conditions. Anahad O’Connor is a bestselling author and reporter for The New York Times. Anahad covers nutrition, medicine and chronic disease. He has published a number of groundbreaking investigative stories for the Times, including a series in 2015 that exposed Coca-Cola’s funding of scientific research that sought to downplay the role of sugar-sweetened beverages in the obesity epidemic. In 2018 he and his colleagues won an award from the Association of HealthCare Journalists for “Planet Fat,” a series that examined the food industry’s role in the spread of global obesity. Anahad is a frequent guest on national news programs, such as PBS NewsHour, Good Morning America, and NPR’s All Things Considered, and the author of four books. Anahad is a graduate of Yale University, and lives in San Francisco with his wife, a women’s rights attorney, and their son. Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador, interviews Dr. Dana Rashid, Assistant Research Professor, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, at Montana State University. Ira Pastor Comments In the 1990 science fiction novel, Jurassic Park, written by Michael Crichton, a fictional genetic engineering start-up based in Palo Alto, California, called International Genetic Technologies, Inc. (InGen), has discovered a method of cloning dinosaurs using blood extracted from mosquitoes, trapped in amber, during the Mesozoic era, the interval of geological time from about 252 to 66 million years ago, comprising the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Most viewers and listeners will be familiar with the amazing movie franchise that this seminal novel subsequently spawned. Many are probably aware that 30 years into this franchise, that tracking down the blood of dinosaurs in this fashion, and accomplishing anything akin to the biotechnological feats of Dr. Henry Wu, chief geneticist in Jurassic Park, are a bit remote - DNA sequences long enough to be usable and readable for cloning purposes can’t survive more than 1.5 million years. But what about a different approach? On previous episodes, we have independently talked about a range of themes from microevolution, to the physiological dynamics of how biological form is established, to the unique genomics of regenerative organisms like the amphibians. We’ve also dabbled in a bit of sci-fi type topic, not shying away from some “bleeding edge thinking” – cryonics, astrobiology, etc. Today we are going to merge a lot of this together. Dr. Dana Rashid: I’m joined today by Dr. Dana Rashid, Assistant Research Professor, Cell Biology and Neuroscience, at Montana State University. With a PhD from University of California, Davis, Dr. Rashid is an evolutionary biologist who in addition to studying dynamics such as the tail evolution from dinosaurs to birds which occurred over the last 150 million years, and the mutations events that transitioned the long tails of dinosaurs to the short, fused tails of today’s birds. She also oversees the Dino-Chicken lab, established by paleontologist Jack Horner, with the goal of taking living descendants of dinosaurs (chickens) and reverse genetically engineering them to reactivate ancestral traits, including teeth, tails, and even hands, to potentially one day make a "Chicken-osaurus". In addition to the obvious “Consumer Biologicals” opportunities (as baby dinosaur pets are referred to in the Jurassic Park book), there are also fascinating human biomedical learnings stemming from such biotechnological work, related to diseases where we see a disruption of biological form, as in the case of the inflammatory disorder Ankylosing Spondylitis, a devastating and common human back disease where back bones fuse together. On this episode we will hear from Dr. Rashid about: Her background; how she became interested in science, evolutionary biology, and in the intersection of such biological knowledge with paleontology. A background of the genetic learnings emerging from the dinosaur-to-bird evolutionary events. "Baby Dinosaur" applications stemming from Dino-Chicken research. Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador, interviews Professor Dr. Frank Rühli, Director of the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine and on the Medical Faculty of University of Zurich, and Founding Director, Chair, Full Professor of Evolutionary Medicine. Ira Pastor Comments: Famous prominent Russian-American geneticist and evolutionary biologist, Theodosius Dobzhansky, stated in a 1973 essay that “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." When one applies this principle to medical research, it suggests that if you study only the proximal causes of health and disease (pathophysiology), you get a limited picture, and such dynamics could be better understood within an evolutionary framework. While traditional biomedical research is often concerned with pathophysiology, it is the relatively new science of evolutionary medicine that seeks to link human pathology with our past, present, and future evolutionary trajectories. Combining the study of proximal and distal reasons underpinning medical disorders yields a deeper understanding that may help to improve the ways diseases are screened for, treated, or prevented. Professor Dr. Frank Rühli: Professor Dr. Frank Rühli, is Director of the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine and on the Medical Faculty of University of Zurich, and Founding Director, Chair, Full Professor of Evolutionary Medicine. In addition to being the director of the institute he is also Head of the Paleopathology and Mummy Studies Group, as well as Head of the Museum‚ Medical Collection and Human Remains Group. On this fascinating show we will hear from Dr. Ruhli: About his background and how he developed an interest in science, medicine, and the unique intersection with the study of evolutionary biology. The principle of "Micro-Evolution" and the fact that humans (Homo-Sapiens) "evolve" every day. His unique study of human mummies and application towards understanding our health "past." This is part two of an interview with Dr. Ted Achacoso. Dr. Achacoso continues to blow me away with his knowledge and ability to make complexity fun. Part two includes deep dives into nootropics, Health Optimization Medicine, Blue Cannatine, and microdosing.Who is Dr. Ted Achacoso? Dr. Ted Achacoso earned his college degree in Biology at the age of 18 and his Doctor of Medicine degree at the age of 22. At 25, he was a fellow of interventional neuroradiology, a research professor of pharmacology and toxicology, and a clinical professor of neurology in Manila. At 28, he became a professor of medical informatics and of interventional neuroradiology in Washington, DC, where he also performed artificial intelligence research biased towards connectionist systems. At 30, he began science and technology consulting for socially responsible investment funds. At 35, he founded and ran a group collaboration software company and created the first wireless groupware. At 40 he traded currencies using artificial intelligence predictive techniques for a private fund. At 45, he retrained in Interventional Endocrinology (Anti-Aging Medicine) and in Nutritional Medicine in Paris, and became double board-certified in both specialties. Dr. Ted wrote the first-ever connectome (of C. elegans) in a book, is published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, holds US patents and software algorithms, provides TV and podcast interviews, and delivers lectures. He currently has a tri-continental practice in Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe), a clinical framework that he pioneered to include health management in a disease management practice. He also formulated the Blue Cannatine nootropic troche, a product in the Troscriptions line of Smarter Not Harder, Inc.What is HOMe? Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) is a new specialty that takes care of the health of the basic cell that is common to all cells in the body --- the nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria and other organelles, cell membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasm, microtubules, etc --- which forms the base of specialized cells like muscle cells and neurons, and which in turn, makes up the specialized organs in the body like the heart and the brain. HOMe is for physicians and HOPe (Health Optimization Practice) is for non-physician healthcare practitioners.“Illness Medicine” diagnoses and treats disease at the level of the organ, for example, cardiology and neurology. In contrast, “Health Optimization Medicine” detects and corrects imbalances at the level of the metabolome, for example, intra-cellular mitochondrial metabolites, extra-cellular microbial metabolites, and inter-cellular neurohormones. HOMe and HOPe use the sciences of Clinical Metabolomics, Epigenetics, Bioenergetics, Gut Immune System, Exposomics, Chronobiology, and Evolutionary Medicine – subjects currently not taught in medical and allied health schools. The science of HOMe/HOPe is “network-wide range shifting,” meaning shifting the objectively detected levels of metabolites, especially of the major hormone and nutrient networks, into the optimal ranges seen in healthy adults aged 21 to 30. This means that HOMe/HOPe does not use the same reference ranges for laboratory tests used in Illness Medicine, for example, for hyper- or hypothyroidism. This also means that an entire metabolic subnetwork of values is shifted and not just one value, for example, in nutrient optimization, Vitamin E is never given singly but always in relation to the measured levels of all the other major antioxidants in the Antioxidant Regeneration Pathway. Since manipulating one node within a network contextually affects the other nodes to which it is connected, the art of HOMe/HOPe is in manipulating the metabolic subnetwork such that borderline deficiencies and subtle toxicities are corrected to the point of concomitant subjective increase in well-being and health, for example, experiencing increased libido and decreased frequency of self-limiting infectious illnesses.Whereas Illness Medicine is after diagnosis and treatment of disease, lifespan, and quantity, Health Optimization Medicine and Practice is after detection and correction of imbalances, healthspan, and quality. Illness Medicine asks for Immortality. Health Optimization Medicine and Practice asks for Eternal Youth. This is part one of a two-part episode with Dr. Ted Achacoso. In this recording, Dr. Achacoso blows me away with his ability to distill knowledge into actionable and usable information. Part one is a discussion around complex systems, consciousness, health optimization medicine, and eliminating jet lag.Who is Dr. Ted Achacoso?Dr. He also formulated the Blue Cannatine nootropic troche, a product in the Troscriptions line of Smarter Not Harder, Inc.What is Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe)?Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) is a new specialty that takes care of the health of the basic cell that is common to all cells in the body --- the nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria and other organelles, cell membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoplasm, microtubules, etc --- which forms the base of specialized cells like muscle cells and neurons, and which in turn, makes up the specialized organs in the body like the heart and the brain. Her research is focused on understanding the relationship between the environment (both social and natural) and behavior, and ultimately how this influences health and wellbeing. Her background is in evolutionary approaches to human behavior (in particular Human Behavioral Ecology), therefore her research seeks to test hypotheses developed from evolutionary theory and ultimately, to understand the function of any given behavior. Dr. Page's interests are also influenced by Evolutionary Medicine and Applied Evolutionary Anthropology and Demography. In this episode, we talk about several aspects of human sociality from a human behavioral ecology perspective. We first discuss alloparenting, and the tole of fathers. We talk about what we can learn about human nature from traditional societies. We then get into studies Dr. Page did with the Agta, a population of Filipino hunter-gatherers, and particularly what happens when some of their groups adopt a more sedentary agriculture-based lifestyle, particularly in terms of health, fertility and demography. Kevin Boyd, DDS, MS, discusses his innovative medical theory known as Darwinian Dentistry. Dr. Boyd's theory and hypothesis is based on the study of prehistoric fossil remains of human ancestors and could offer much information about the past, and future, of children's health care. Dr. Boyd is a board-certified pediatric dentist with over two decades of experience. Dr. Boyd explains the history of evolutionary medicine, commenting on some of the early pioneers of medicine who looked at modern diseases that seemed to be a function of cultural industrialization. Dr. Boyd discusses pathogens and causes, and focuses on how people adapt over geological time to gradually changing environments, and he discusses how it all impacts the genome. He cites examples of mammals that experience illnesses and survive to live another day, within the context of evolutionary fitness. Continuing, Dr. Boyd discusses tooth decay and why we now need orthodontists, considering the history and the time chronology, meaning when that first entered the human condition. He explains how he adapted the model of evolutionary medicine specifically to evolutionary oral medicine, or Darwinian Dentistry, aligning his theories with his 20 years of expertise as a dentist. Dr. Boyd discusses his work in pediatric dentistry, talking about orthodontics, and the management of anxiety in kids. Early oral evaluation, beginning at or around the ages of 3 or 4 is recommended, he states. Around this age, thumb sucking, pacifiers, or other oral habits can greatly influence the shape of a child's jaw, teeth, and even face. The doctor explains the merits of early orthodontics, widening the jaw and airway, etc., and how there is clear evidence of kids doing better in school, ending their bed wetting, and experiencing many behavioral improvements, after orthodontic procedures. He provides further information on the many problems that can be created and caused by crowding of the airway, and how early orthodontic procedures can facilitate and improve potential problems.

We all know there are universal rules to follow when it comes to eating a healthy diet, but personalization should be at the top of the list. While we have a lot in common as human beings and there are certain nutritional guidelines applicable to all of us, we’re different in important ways too. We have different genetics, constitutions, health status, activity levels, lifestyles, and goals, and all of these factors determine what an optimal diet is for each of us. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Chris Kresser, the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure. In 2016, Steve went through the Kresser Institute’s Practitioner Training Program for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine, completing the ADAPT Level 1 Framework.  Since then, his focus has shifted to working more with clients who are ready to make a deeper commitment to their health. Steve is on the podcast today talking about his transition into Functional Medicine and his practical application of our Blood Chemistry Calculator to guide treatment decisions and keep clients motivated.  Steve is currently running his busy clinic in Australia and is now introducing an easy way for Aussies to get lab work done locally and try the calculator for themselves. The synergy of astrology and herbalism provides a truly holistic framework that unites the physiology, psychology and soul of the person, with the physical, energetic and spiritual properties of plants. The result of this synergy gives us as herbalists the ability to attend to every layer of the human organism through the power of the holistic plant- especially when the plants are prepared according to the tradition of Alchemy. Each planetary force represents a spectrum of potential energy, a particular aspect of the psyche, and specific evolutionary pathways for the soul. We all have every planet within us, though some we are more "comfortable" with and express in a healthy and harmonious way- others we may express more of their "dark side," or less evolved qualities. These unintegrated planetary forces can manifest physically in the body, psychologically and emotionally, and show us the specific areas of the life where we need deeper levels of healing and transformation. The work of the Evolutionary Herbalist is to understand these patterns of the macrocosm within the microcosm of people and plants, and to support in the transformation of each celestial principle within the person in order to establish harmony within their inner astral body, and thus coherence with the macrocosm- or nature and cosmos. ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ ———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham, founder of Organic Unity and The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, is committed to creating a new paradigm of plant medicine anchored in herbal, medical, and spiritual traditions from around the world. Patreon.com/learntruehealth Menstrual Cycle  http://learntruehealth.com/menstrual-cycle Menstrual cycle and how to balance our hormones is something every woman should know. Studies show that balanced hormones are also connected to our mental health and longevity. So my guest today, Nicole Jardim will teach us exactly how to take care of ourselves especially during our menstrual cycle. Great Childhood Nicole Jardim says she had a great childhood. But when she was 11 years old, her dad suddenly passed away. It turned her world upside down. Around 14 or 15 years old, Nicole Jardim had no idea why she suddenly developed significant period problems. Her mom experienced the same thing until her 20s, so she didn’t think her menstrual cycle was amiss. Heavy Periods Nicole Jardim recalls that one of her major menstrual problems was having heavy periods. Then suddenly her menstrual cycle would halt and come only every three to four months. She continued this way for the next four years during her teenage years. There were times that it would give her terrible cramps and unable to go to school. Finally, at around 18 years old, she decided to go to an ob-gyn doctor to discuss her menstrual cycle problem. That doctor recommended that Nicole Jardim start taking birth control pills because that was the solution in conventional medicine. Effects Of Taking Birth Control Pills Upon taking birth control pills, the menstrual pain subsided and Nicole Jardim’s periods only lasted around two days. Gone are the days of heavy menstrual periods. But Nicole Jardim’s hormones swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. It turned out she was estrogen-dominant and had low levels of sex hormones. It was like at pre-menopausal level by the time Nicole Jardim went off the pill in her early 20s. “By that time, I was having serious health problems. I had serious gut issues, and my hair was falling. Then I had melasma all over my face and experienced UTIs and yeast infections,” recalls Nicole Jardim.  Seeing An Acupuncturist Because of her numerous health issues, Nicole Jardim ended up seeing an acupuncturist. After an initial consultation, the acupuncturist told her that the birth control pills caused all her menstrual cycle problems. Eventually, she got off the pill, and her health did improve. Nicole Jardim finally realized she wanted to learn more about women’s health and understand more about the female body. Institute For Integrative Nutrition During her period of research, Nicole Jardim discovered the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). However, they were only doing live courses in New York City at the time. And with Nicole Jardim living in Florida, it initially seemed impossible for her to enroll. After meeting a friend who was a graduate of IIN and teaching Holistic Nutrition, Nicole Jardim finally decided to move to New York City to go to the school. Luckily, he husband was supportive of her decision. Hence, Nicole Jardim attended her first class in 2010. Later on, after her apprenticeship, Nicole Jardim realized that she genuinely wanted to pursue a career in women’s health. It became a life mission for her to help women cope with their health issues, especially about menstrual periods. There’s More To Nutrition “One thing I learned is how food is connected to our hormones and our period,” said Nicole Jardim. Apparently, there is so much to learn about food and nutrition. I’ve had a few medical doctors on the show who said they pay so much for their education, such that they are made to think they are taught everything there is to know about healing, health, and nutrition. And in over eight years of education, they only have one class on nutrition. Hence, they think that is all they need to know about the subject. Current State Of Women’s Health Nicole Jardim thinks that one of the most significant problems of women is they are right now under an unprecedented amount of physical, emotional, psychological stress. Apparently, we’re at a breaking point already. So we have to figure out some way to live in the world as it is right now. “When we’re in the state of chronic overstimulation, what happens is, our brains are being hijacked. And what that looks like is we have issues like blood sugar roller coaster, food sensitivity or gut inflammation,” said Nicole Jardim. “We end up in this chronic state of fight or flight. Our bodies are constantly in the alarm mode.”  Bioidentical Hormones When it comes to having hormones that are regulated or imbalanced, Nicole Jardim thinks that you have first to figure out the root cause. One way is looking into the food you are eating. You also have to figure out your chronic overstimulation. “There’s a lot of different factors that you have to address before jumping into a hormone replacement therapy,” said Nicole Jardim. Some of you may have heard of Dr. John Lee. He was the pioneer of bioidentical progesterone. His work is outstanding. Regarding bone density, he was able to reverse osteoporosis with bioidentical progesterone. Unfortunately, he already passed away from a heart attack in 2003. Success Stories Nicole Jardim has earned a lot of praise from clients who have all benefited from her programs to improve their reproductive health and fixed their hormone issues. Some women suffering from infertility and PCOS have identified the root cause of their health problem after signing up for Nicole Jardim’s Fix Your Period Course. “Every woman who comes to me doesn’t have a clue about what is going on with her body. She doesn’t understand what ovulation is or why she gets her period and so many other things,” reveals Nicole Jardim. “It’s a serious problem. So I first have women understand their bodies and the phases of their menstrual cycle.”  Changing Diets I know you’ve heard it again and again. Diet makes a big difference in improving health. Nicole Jardim says it can be overwhelming, but the secret is to take baby steps towards changing your diet. “Think about all the green vegetables in the world, and choose a few of them that you love. And start to have that every day of your diet,” advises Nicole Jardim. “So many women did that and had amazing changes.” These vegetables are critical to women’s health because they contain compounds that help reduce estrogen dominance. They help your body produce estrogen better. Nicole Jardim says two to three cups of vegetables a day is an ideal amount. Some vegetables include kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli, etc. Nicole Jardim also advises watching our fat intakes and consume coconut oil, coconut butter, animal proteins, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds. Consequently, Nicole Jardim says when we’re not giving out body enough nutrients, we will be unable to ovulate consistently. Do try out Nicole Jardim’s recipe for pumpkin seeds and flax. Take one tablespoon of each, put it into a smoothie, salad, soup or breakfast food. You can also grind up the seeds before ingesting it. You can also use sunflower seeds. Changing Lifestyle Nicole Jardim also suggests creating a routine at night by limiting phone use and watching TV. It is also advisable to restrict the use of the computer. Using essential oils also helps. “What you need to be doing is winding down and optimize our sleep. That will drastically change how we function and how resilient we are to stresses in our life,” Nicole Jardim said. Nicole Jardim is a Certified Women’s Health + Functional Nutrition Coach with a specialty in hormonal and reproductive health. In 2010, she trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health coach. Shortly after that, Nicole Jardim completed a 3-month apprenticeship at a women’s holistic health center in New York City. She then did a 1-year training program with Dr. Sara Gottfried, MD (author of The Hormone Cure & The Hormone Reset Diet). Nicole Jardim followed that up with an additional 1-year women’s health and nutrition coaching certification program with the Integrative Women’s Health Institute. In 2016, she completed a 1-year training program with the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. And finally, she is pursuing her national certification to become a licensed health coach. Get Connected With Nicole Jardim! In this episode, we explore the science of breastfeeding. Making milk is something that only mammals do, but why did it evolve, and what benefits does it provide? What’s actually in breast milk, and what impact does breastfeeding have on the health of the baby and the mother? Our guests have the answers. Katie Hinde, Ph.D., (https://isearch.asu.edu/profile/2740008) is an evolutionary biologist and lactation specialist who studies the biology of mother’s milk. She’s an associate professor in Arizona State University’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change. Her blog, Mammals Suck … Milk!, (http://mammalssuck.blogspot.com/) is a funny, informative summary of breastfeeding research, written for the general public. Nicole Burt, Ph.D., (https://www.cmnh.org/burt) is the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Curator of Human Health and Evolutionary Medicine. She’s a biological anthropologist whose research involves breastfeeding and weening patterns in ancient and modern humans, and the impact of breastfeeding on maternal and child health. Her work in breastfeeding education aims to reduce infant mortality in Northeast Ohio.

Evolutionary Medicine is becoming a hot topic in the world of fitness and nutrition.  What did our early ancestor's lives look like? Was it scary or friendly? What did we do all day?  Clearly, all of our ancestors knew what they were doing. Today, Anthony Sanna talks with Michael Smith about Evolutionary Medicine and the Four Worlds of most Indigenous cultures. Michael describes each World's way of living life together; the diet, cultural drives, lifespan, stress levels, and style of cooperation.  If you have ever wanted to travel back through time and see how humanity came into being, sit back and enjoy the show!

Spit and Twitches: The Animal Cognition Podcast

Aaron Blaisdell is a Professor in Learning & Behavior and Behavioral Neuroscience in the UCLA Psychology Department. He presides over the Comparative Cognition Lab, studying cognitive processes in rats, pigeons, hermit crabs, and humans.Aaron knows the best way to carry a rat is on your shoulderAfter receiving his BA and MA in Biological Anthropology (at SUNY Stony Brook and Kent State University, respectively), Aaron realized that animal cognition was even more interesting than dead humans. So he trekked on over to SUNY Binghamton for his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology with  Ralph Miller, where he studied learning, memory, and temporal cognition in the rat. This was followed by a brief stint as an NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow with Bob Cook, an expert on Avian Visual Cognition at Tufts University, where he learned how pigeons perceive and think about the world. In 2001, he emigrated to the climatological and cultural paradise of sunny LA where he has remained ever since.  A second interest of Aaron’s is in how human ancestry and evolution can inform us about health and well being in the modern world. He is currently studying the interaction between diet and cognition. He is a founding member and Past President of the Ancestral Health Society, Past President of the International Society for Comparative Psychology, an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Evolution and Health, and a member of the Brain Research Institute, the Integrative Center for Learning & Memory, and the Evolutionary Medicine program all at UCLA.We talked about a lot of different things, including reasoning in rats, sensory preconditioning, how diet affects cognition, representation in rat memory and Aaron's crowdfunded research proposal. Thanks again to Red Arms for letting me mash up their music in the closing theme. Evolution plays an important though underutilized role in medicine. Evolution guides how our bodies respond to various treatments, how pathogens will respond to treatments, and how pathogens' responses will change over time. Pathogens oftentimes will evolve to an intermediate level of virulence where they become strong enough to infect a host and reproduce, but not so strong as to kill the host before it can spread the pathogen.
