One of the biggest religious storylines of 2023 has been: the huge number of people leaving their faith communities. Because Christianity is the #1 by volume religion in America, the loss has been felt heaviest there. Why has this been happening? And how many have left? The opening scenes of LEFT BEHIND: RISE OF THE ANTICHRIST display the fear, panic and unnatural disasters that result from the sudden, mysterious disappearance of millions of people across the globe. Network news anchor Buck Williams not only reports the resulting stories but uses his investigative skills to get to the truth. Is it aliens, some kind of STAR TREK technology, or a hoax. Meanwhile, airline pilot Rayford Steele is at home with his daughter Chloe as they grieve the disappearances of Rayford's wife and son. Steele turns to the church for answers. The characters will journey to a moment of decision about God's role in these events and in their lives going forward.
We point our GPS towards the Garden State this week, for a return to the days of pro hoops in places like the "RAC" (Piscataway's Rutgers Athletic Center), the "Rock" (Newark's Prudential Center), and the strangely iconic Meadowlands - as we look back at 35 seasons of the oft-forgotten New Jersey incarnation of NBA basketball's peripatetic Nets franchise with sports historian Łukasz Muniowski ("Turnpike Team: A History of the New Jersey Nets, 1977-2012"). Though replete with memorable moments both before (as the inaugural American Basketball Association's New Jersey Americans, and later the twice-champion, Julius Erving-led, Nassau Coliseum-based New York Nets) - and after (as the thoroughly rebranded, Barclays Center-domiciled Brooklyn Nets, since 2012) - it is the club's time as the New Jersey Nets that stands out to fans and scribes alike as the most colorful, bewilderingly forlorn and oddly endearing period of its existence. Join us for memories of players like Bernard "Sky B.B." King, "Super John" Williamson, Buck Williams, Sam Bowie, Derrick Coleman, Stephon Marbury, Jason Kidd, and Vince Carter - and a team that twice came this close to an NBA Finals championship (2001-02; 2002-03), unwittingly solidifying a decades-old inferiority complex that arguably still permeates the franchise today. + + + PURCHASE Łukasz Muniowski's book "Turnpike Team: A History of the New Jersey Nets, 1977-2012" in either paperback or Kindle electronic versions NOW!
Join me for another interview only episode as I sit down with former NBA All-star and Rookie of the Year Buck Williams. Buck and I discuss his lengthy 17 year career in the NBA that featured numerous all-defensive team selections, two trips to the NBA finals and finishing ranked 15th all-time in career rebounding. Later on, Buck discusses his time as the President of the NBA Player's Association and the impact he's had on the players and the league to this day.
Ric catches up with Alaa, whose five-year NBA career with five teams afforded him a chance to play with an array of legendary players and experience everything the league has to offer, from starting out with a veteran-laden, championship-chasing Blazers' squad, joining the Celtics' brotherhood to a young and wild Sacramento Kings' squad. Hear never-told-before insight into such legends as Moses Malone, Buck Williams, Xavier McDaniels and the late Reggie Lewis. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jasmine D. Brown, production assistant for ESPN and former beat writer for Washington Mystics and Capital City Go-Go (the Wizard’s G-League affiliate) joined the Hoops And Talks Podcast to talk about her journey to working full-time in sports. She talked about Trevor Ariza’s time with the Wizards, Maryland alumni who have played for the Trail Blazers and the trajectory of the Washington Mystics leading to their 2019 WNBA Championship. We had a great time learning that there was a Twitter account for Jake Layman’s hair (@jakelaymanshair), how a mechanical engineering major pivoted to sports, and what are some of the highlights of the new WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. All of this and more on the latest podcast. Highlights 1:00 Icebreaker: Favorite kind of cookies these days? 3:00 How did you get into basketball? Never played but loves to shoot. Enjoys the “something to prove” aspect of college hoops. 6:15 As someone dialed in to the Washington DC sports scene, what can you tell us about the newest Trail Blazer Trevor Ariza? 10:45 What is it like working at ESPN? Do you get tired of watching sports? She is always going to watch Maryland and DC area sports. 13:00 Three popular Fan Favorites went to her alma mater, University of Maryland, Jake Layman, Steve Blake and Buck Williams. Thoughts or memories about these guys? She knew who Buck Williams was, remembered Steve Blake most from his time with the Lakers, and she was at Maryland when Jake Layman played there. His hair had its own twitter account! 18:30 What was it like covering the Washington Mystics in their championship run last season? It was great to see them progress because they went from losing in the Semi Finals, to losing in the Finals to finally winning the whole thing. Highlights were a Natasha Cloud buzzer-beater, Game 5 of the finals. 22:00 The WNBA has been in the news lately because of the new CBA. What do you think is most significant about the new agreement? The pay was very significant because people really don’t know how much the players were making. And so many have to play year round to support themselves. The Mystics couldn’t have a championship parade because too many of the players had to leave right away to go overseas. 24:15 What do you think will be the most significant impact this season? The players will probably have a good mindset coming in, feeling like they are being cared for. 28:30 Could this lead to possible expansion of the WNBA? 30:30 Any reflection on Alana Beard as she announces her retirement? You can be a defensive player and still get recognition. 33:30 What is it like working somewhere that famous athletes are either working or visiting all the time? 35:00 How did she get into production? She always wanted to be an anchor person, was an early fan of George Stephanopoulos, but studied engineering in college before deciding she wanted to get into sports. She did a lot of writing for years before she moved to ESPN. Get social Follow Blazer’s Edge on Twitter @blazersedge, WHAT Pod @HoopsAndTalks, Tara @tcbbiggs, and Cassidy @CassidyGemmet. The Big Something high-stepped it into the ad hoc studios just blocks away from the 2017 Sweetwater Music and Arts Festival and sat down with Rob and Seth for a playful interview that captures their unique personalities. After a brief introduction from Big Something fan and collaborator Kris Myers (drums/vocals Umphrey’s McGee) we learn about the band’s songwriting process, the importance of its hidden member Paul Interdonato, the pluses and minuses of being from central North Carolina and how Buck Williams and Mike Mills ended up at a Big Something gig in Wilmington, North Carolina. We also learn about just how important the producer John Custer has been to the band’s development and the low-key way he brings forth his pivotal insight. Custer’s uses his sense of humor and general good nature to make what otherwise might be difficult-to-receive criticism and insight. The band speaks of their close friend and mentor Lee Crumpton in the interview, then the founder of the Homegrown Music Network himself joins Seth and Rob for the outtro to talk about how he first heard of Big Something, his time managing them and his recent experiences at the Lockn Festival and Big Something’s own “Big Wha?” festival. In a world where no one has any concept of “the rapture”, those left behind in its wake are completely dumbfounded when much of the world's population simply disappears. Kirk Cameron plays the part of Buck Williams, a perfectly nice and friendly guy who fails to get raptured. Buck quickly accompanies a good-natured pilot and a neighborly priest, also characters shunned by the Lord. Just how strict were God's requirements to get into Heaven, anyway? Together, these three charming companions strive to live a proper Christian lifestyle while simultaneously defeating the newly risen Anti-Christ.TortureVision Rating: BADGood features were better than expected. High School All-American, NIT Champion, Film Producer & Actor, Nigel Miguel. High School: Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), California As a child, Nigel moved from Central America to California. We talk about his role models as a youngster, before transitioning into his high-school career, where, as a senior, he led his team to a 19-5 record, en route to winning the Del Rey League Championship. He was named a 1981 McDonald’s All-American, in the famous class that included Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullin. He discusses the tremendous opportunities that afforded him, including a crucial role in the USA’s gold-medal win at the 1981 Albert Schweitzer Tournament (often referred to as the Mini-Basketball World Cup, or Junior Olympics). College: University of California Los Angeles | Years: 1981-82 – 1984-85 Nigel played four seasons at UCLA. As a freshman, he was teammates with future Utah Jazz great – and friend of the show – Mark Eaton. In his sophomore season, Nigel’s Bruins made it the NCAA Tournament. He talks about the joy of making it to the tournament, coupled with the disappointment of a first-game exit. In his junior and senior years, Nigel paired with all-time great, Reggie Miller. Prior to his last season with the team, Walt Hazzard – a player on John Wooden’s first NCAA Championship team – took the helm as UCLA coach. We discuss his lasting impact on Nigel and the team.. Miguel ended his Bruins career in style, scoring an equal game-high, 18 points, as UCLA won the 1985 NIT Championship, at the famed Madison Square Garden. CBA / NBA career | Years: 1985-86 – 1986-87 We talk about the lead-up to the 1985 NBA Draft, including team interviews that Nigel undertook, and, his one-on-one workout with the legendary Jerry West, on the court at the Great Western Forum. After being the last player cut from the New Jersey Nets’ training camp, Nigel signed with Wisconsin’s new CBA franchise, the La Crosse Catbirds. He talks about his fondness for that season, where he was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, averaging more than 17 points per game. Miguel was runner-up to future NBA All-Star, Michael Adams, for Rookie of the Year. The Catbirds made it to the 1986 CBA Championship series, before losing out to (former podcast guest) Ed Nealy and his Tampa Bay Thrillers. Continued interest from the New Jersey Nets (and L.A. Lakers), led to Nigel’s return to (Nets) training camp, in anticipation of a roster spot for the 1986-87 NBA season. He talks about the seemingly-innocuous ‘tweak’ of his ankle, during a lead-up game. That quickly led to an inner-monologue: “My foot is on the ground…but I don’t feel anything”. He’d fractured his heel bone and damaged his Achilles tendon. NBA veteran, Buck Williams, helped Nigel put his injury into context – offering suggestions on how to overcome the disappointment of having his professional career, seemingly reach an abrupt end. Entertainment: Commercials, television, movies and more After commencing rehabilitation for the 1987-88 NBA season, Nigel lost the desire to compete at the highest level, making a conscious decision to pursue other opportunities. His love for the entertainment industry, went as far back as high school – he attended classes with peers who had connections (family and otherwise) with the entertainment industry. Miguel’s attorney helped connect Nigel with an agent and key members of the entertainment industry. Not long after, Dennis Hopper - recognizing the former-Bruins player - struck up a conversation with Miguel. Within an hour, Nigel was offered his first movie role, in Colors (1988). Future roles included the TV series, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper (1992) and movies, White Men Can’t Jump (1992), Blue Chips (1994) and the iconic Space Jam (1996), where Miguel appears on-screen and off; he was Basketball Technical Advisor. We chat about his crucial involvement in the behind-the-scenes running of the legendary Jordan Dome, where Michael Jordan took part in amazing pick-up games – including Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Dennis Rodman & Jack Haley – during production of the film. Nigel also details what it was like to be Michael Jordan’s ‘body double’ for seven years. We chat about Nigel being named Belize’s ‘Goodwill Ambassador‘ (1994) and ‘Film Ambassador’ (2008), along with what the prestigious positions mean to him. Nigel also talks about creating II Jam Casting & Production. I ask Nigel to recall “The Game I’ll Never Forget” and round out the conversation with a chat about the significance of his jersey number. Nigel Miguel: IMDb | Media: Ardomi | Twitter: @FilmBelize We discuss Mitchell's career in basketball since he retired as a player. He's been involved in various roles, most recently, accepting a position as a sports agent at Jackson Management Group (owned by Phil Jackson's son, Charles). Adam & Aaron celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's second season in the National Basketball Association. This episode covers: - NBA regular season - October 25 through November 8, 1985 - Insightful minutiae, all but lost to the annals of basketball history In this episode, we discuss numerous happenings from the first 15 days of the 1985-86 NBA season. The Chicago Bulls played seven games in this span – three wins and four losses. Without doubt, the biggest news of the young season, was Michael Jordan's fractured left foot - initially reported to be a 'jammed ankle' - suffered in the team's third game. He'd miss 64 regular-season games. We chat about Larry Bird's near quadruple-double that opened the Celtics' season. That same game was also Bill Walton's debut with Boston. We also talk about the great play of the L.A. Clippers' Derek Smith, who lit up the newly-relocated Sacramento Kings, for 36 points. Patrick Ewing made his NBA debut, however, suffered more losses in his first two weeks as a pro (seven), than he did in his entire senior season at Georgetown (three). Further, we discuss John Paxson signing with the Bulls and Manute Bol's first NBA points. Also, we mention 40-plus point performances from Mark Aguirre, Alex English and Akeem Olajuwon, chat about Chris Mullin's heroics in his first regular-season game and much more. Kirk is best known as the lovable teen heartthrob Mike Seaver, of the award winning series Growing Pains. He entertained audiences worldwide as the charming troublemaker. He is also known to many Christians as "Buck Williams" from the Left Behind films -- based on the NY Times runaway best selling novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. Kirk's most recent role was playing the part of "Capt.
