Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 3 (5.7) It’s Melanoma Monday, and Tim asks the important question: Do you know how to identify melanoma before it becomes dangerous? The crew breaks down the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color changes, Diameter larger than about 6mm, and Evolving spots. A new mole, a changing spot, or one that looks different from the rest — the “ugly duckling” sign — should be checked by a doctor. Plus, a reminder to check your skin regularly, look at both sun-exposed and hidden areas, and take any unusual, bleeding, itching, growing, or changing spot seriously. Early detection can make a major difference. Clean Segment Line: Ask Melanoma Monday: How to identify melanoma and when to get a suspicious mole checked. Welcome back to Scaling Theory. My guest today is Albert-László Barabási, Professor of Network Science at Northeastern University and one of the most cited scientists alive with over 320 000 citations. His books include Linked, The Formula, and Network Science. In 1999, Albert-László Barabási published a paper that changed how we understand networks. The finding was this: real-world networks are not random. They are dominated by hubs. A few nodes collect most of the links, and they do so because they already have them. In this episode, he explains the details of what he actually found. We then move to the scaling of networks, and the temptation to control them. We conclude with a discussion about art, ballet dancers, architecture, and what mapping careers across disciplines reveals about how networks really work. You can follow me on X (@ProfSchrepel) and BlueSky (@ProfSchrepel).References:➝ PapersBarabási, A.-L. & Albert, R. Hamstring autograft has been a widely used graft option for ACL reconstruction surgery for years. Data over the last decade, however, has called into question its performance versus other autograft options particularly when it comes to the rate of re-tear. One potential reason for a higher rate of re-tear may be that hamstring grafts tend to be smaller in diameter compared to patellar tendon autografts, for example. Historically, a hamstring graft diameter of 8 mm has been considered a critical value that could determine long-term success versus failure, however an exact graft diameter has not been identified. Dr. Raffy Mirzayan, MD from Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park joins us to discuss his study aiming to find that threshold diameter for hamstring autograft. We discuss how the fear of a smaller diameter graft may influence surgeons to look at other options such as quadriceps tendon autograft.

On this episode, co-hosts Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr and guest Dr. Michelle DeBoer discuss the hotly debated topic of whether or not horses actually need blankets in the winter, based on scientific research, including: Changes in hair coat length and diameter in blanketed and non-blanketed horsesHow body weight, body condition score and dry matter intake are impacted in blanketed horsesThe next scientific research project in the works to evaluate whether horses should be blanketed or not Can horses actually TELL us if they want a blanket or not? Dr. DeBoer also shares the results from a fascinating research study answering this question. This is only part one of our interview! In Episode 72, the second part of this conversation, releasing Tuesday, December 5, Dr. DeBoer discusses the physiological processes that keep horses warm and if deciding to blanket, the right way to do it to keep horses at a healthy body condition and safe through the winter. In this week's episode of The Deer Gear Podcast, I am joined by Firenock Owner/Operator Dorge Huang to discuss the pros and cons of Micro Diameter hunting arrows. Micro diameter arrows, specifically the .166 shaft has been ultra popular for hunting for the last few years, but is it for the right reasons? In this podcast we discuss the best use case for .166 shafts, how they perform compared to other shaft diameters, how to make them better, and why modern day compound bow shooters may want to consider an alternative shaft! If you are a micro-diameter shooter and want to learn all about the construction, pros, and cons of your arrows: Tune in! In today's episode of The Exodus Podcast, we are unveiling our brand new Exodus NIS .204 diameter hunting arrow! The team discusses the development and benefits of the Exodus NIS Arrow, offering customization options. They also answer questions on arrow building, nocks, and broadhead weight. We discuss: The NIS is a high-quality, multi-layered carbon shaft that offers strict tolerances for straightness and spine The product development process focused on creating a lightweight arrow at a good price point The NIS has a true .204 diameter shaft and is built with precision It is a lighter weight shaft, offering more variability and a faster set-up Eliminating weak spots found in traditional .204 builds with components The NIS is crafted with strict straightness tolerances in mind The NIS offers high performance at an affordable price Two different insert options for more flexibility CTI is still present in the NIS Arrow but is transferred differently due to its lightness Spine alignment after cutting for arrow to arrow consistency Added Fletching Options Added Nock Options Packing a punch further down range And so much more! My guest this week is Scott Goodwin. Scott is the co-founder and managing partner of Diameter Capital Partners, which he started as a credit hedge fund in 2017 and has expanded into a $13 billion investment firm that covers all credit markets. Scott spent the first 8 years of his career at Citi where he rose to head of High Yield Trading before moving to Anchorage Capital in 2010 where he led their global trading desk. Scott is one of my favorite examples of the joke I used to make about this show, when I said it should be called - "This is who you're up against." He's one of the sharpest investors I know and I'm sure you'll see why. Please enjoy my great discussion with Scott Goodwin. I want to share some perspective on hair texture especially when it comes to hair coloring and lightening. When I say texture, I am referring to the DIAMETER of the individual hair strand, not necessarily texture in the curl pattern or the density of the hair as a whole. When you understand the ROLE that the texture of the hair plays in the hair color world, a lot of formulation mishaps will make sense, and a lot of future problems can be avoided. In this debut episode of season 2, host Mike Dawson demos 12", 13", 14", and 15" snare drums at identical tunings, interviews Stella Mozgawa and Bryan Hollon of the EDM project Belief, visits Hawthorne Drum Shop to check out some vintage Ludwigs, and fields a few listener questions. We also have a great lesson on jazz drumming essentials with Thomas Wendt.
Today Max, Josh and I answered more of your questions including an interesting one about what would happen if we changed the diameter of the plates for official competitions.Join weightlifting.AI - https://weightlifting.ai/ and get access to an individualised program that responds to your needs, as well as world class form check help from coaches in the Performance Community.WH Patreon (extra podcasts & videos) - https://patreon.com/weightliftinghouseShop WH - https://www.weightliftinghouse.com/Follow Seb https://www.instagram.com/seb_ostrowicz/Follow Max https://www.instagram.com/max_aita/Follow Josh https://www.instagram.com/josh_philwl/Follow WH https://www.instagram.com/weightlifting_house/
Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a tree well-known for its ability to negatively affect other plants growing nearby, a phenomenon known as allelopathy. But is Black Walnut really as allelopathic as the Internet would have you believe? In this episode, the guys go nuts: delving into this question and many other facets of the fascinating (and tasty?) Black Walnut, including and on-air tasting of Black Walnut Syrup. Enjoy! This episode was recorded on May 11, 2022 at the Beaver Meadow Audubon Center in North Java, NY.Episode NotesThank you to listener Mark Carroll for giving us the idea for this episode and providing the paper on which much of it was based. Is Black Walnut wind pollinated? Bill mentioned during the episode that he thought the flowers were insect pollinated. He was WRONG! According to Floral Biology And Pollination Of Eastern Black Walnut, a publication by the National Forest Service, “Walnut trees are wind-pollinated and classified as monoecious; male and female flowers are on the same tree, but separated from each other.” Bill stands by his assessment, however, that the distinctive, seldom-seen flowers are worth checking out. This page provides some nice pictures; scroll down to see both the male and female blossoms. The female flowers look like milkweed pods with a sea anemone stuck on top! What is the correct measurement of diameter at breast height (DBH)? Diameter at breast height, or DBH, is a standard method of expressing the diameter of the trunk or bole of a standing tree. Tree trunks are measured at the height of an adult's breast; in many countries, DBH is measured at approximately 1.3 m (4.3 ft) above ground, but in the US, DBH is typically measured at 4.5 ft (1.37 m) above ground. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter_at_breast_height Does Steve know about honeysuckles? Steve claimed that honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) with a hollow pith are not native to eastern North America and that the ones without a hollow pith are native. According to Iowa State University, “Twigs of all species can be hollow. However, the twigs of native species tend to be less hollow with a white pith whereas the exotic species are more obviously hollow with a brown pith.”Are there other plants with a chambered pith? Yes! Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) is another species, unrelated to walnuts, that has a chambered pith. What does microcarpa mean? During their discussion of other walnut species, Bill mentioned the Little Walnut (Juglans microcarpa) , and Steve wondered what “microcarpa” means. The answer? Small fruit.LinksThe Get Crackin' Nut Cracker SupportThe Field Guides PatreonMake a onetime Paypal donation. The Field Guides Merch ShopOur SponsorGumleaf Boots, USAPicture CreditThank you to Always Wandering Art (Website and Etsy Shop) for providing this episode's artwork, as well as the art for many of our previous episodes!
