Hearts Beat Loud is an independent comedy-drama starring Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Toni Collette, Ted Danson, and others released in 2018 across limited screenings. It followed Offerman as the owner of a failing record store, who hits upon minor viral success when he records a jam session with his daughter, a singer just about to attend medical school, and ends up in several major Spotify playlists. The film was directed by Brett Haley with a soundtrack by Keegan DeWitt of Wild Club, and touched upon themes of loss, familial expectations, and old age, resonating heavily with critics, who lauded the film as one of the best of the year.On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome back Rock Candy's Maggie Noel to the program, as they put on their persnickety Brooklyn hipster hats to review Hearts Beat Loud, and its' Postal Service-esque indie pop soundtrack. Join them as the three annoy Scott with another unwelcome recurring bit, pay proper homage to Mitski (Seriously, she rules), find paralells between dance sequences and guitar pedal noodling, and find it generally hard to make jokes during the episodes where the movies are really genuinely good....with Lilz and Scott!

Ready for a discussion neither Brenna or Joe wanted to have? We're ready to tackle Matthew Quick's 2010 novel Sorta Like A Rock Star and Brett Haley's 2020 (confusingly retitled) All Together Now...so that we never have to talk about them again. We're unhappy with both texts for different reasons. Quick's grating prose, inauthentic voice, and unbelievable characters are deal breakers, and while the film correctly diversifies the cast, it squanders its musical components and leans into the underlying "deserving poor" theme of the book. ‘And Then I Go’ highlights the cruel world of junior high. The protagonist, Edwin, suffers from anxiety and alienation, along with his only friend Flake. Together, they come up with a terrifying idea to get vengeance. The story comes from Jim Shepard’s novel, ‘Project X.’ The book and film showcases an unflinching look at adolescent through childhood friends and an effort to find belonging, even when it means life or death. In this interview, Director Vincent Grashaw discusses his passion for film at an early age, how writers can grow out of material, the tipping point for a character with elevated emotions, how to make a story truly relatable and the importance of focus, lighting, and point-of-view to highlight the headspace of a protagonist. Make sure to also listen to our interview with the screenwriter of ‘And Then I Go’ back in Episode 29, where Brett Haley spoke about ‘The Hero.’ Stay up-to-date on other creative advice at www.creativeprinciples.live
