Columbia city manager De'Carlon Seewood is celebrating his second anniversary on the job. He became city manager in January 2022. Mr. Seewood joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable" program. Mr. Seewood, who has 28 years of experience in local government, grew up in East St. Louis Illinois, before moving to Kansas City at the age of 12. He graduated from Kansas City's Rockhurst University, before earning his master's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. He began his career in mid-Missouri's Osage Beach, before moving to Fulton, Ferguson and Berkeley and then to Columbia. Mr. Seewood and Fred focused on numerous topics during the show, including his hiring of new Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude and the current CPD restructuring. Mr. Seewood tells listeners that the overwhelming majority of citizens he's heard from who served on interview panels and who attended forums are pleased with Chief Schlude's hire. Mr. Seewood also addressed January's brutal cold weather and its impact on Columbia's homeless population. He says Room at the Inn (RATI) traditionally saw about 70 guests prior to the cold spell and that once temperatures dropped to single digits, they reached capacity of 85. Mr. Seewood says no one was turned away and that anyone who wanted shelter received it. Columbia's Room at the Inn (RATI) is now in the former VFW Post 280 building on Ashley street. It's located near the city's municipal power plant:

Education Evolution

Imagine being at a school where 80% of the students look like you…but you're the only one like you who is in the honors and advanced classes. That's where this week's guest, Carlon Howard, found himself as he readied to graduate from high school. And that experience put him on the pathway that landed him as a leader and impact-maker in educational equity.   Carlon has a passion for supporting individuals who feel stuck in cultural narratives due to a lack of equity, inclusivity, and diversity in leadership. And his organization, Equity Institute, is taking what they've created and teaching organizations how to develop these initiatives in their own communities.   In this episode, Carlon and I talk about doing the work in the messy gray space, why teacher pathway programs are so valuable, why schools need support outside the traditional education space, and how he built Equity Institute organically from a place of connection and decompressing.   I love Carlon's philosophy of teaching others to do the work, rather than assuming his organization knows the answers for every situation. We need more of this in leadership roles. About Carlon Howard: Carlon is the Chief Impact Officer and Co-Founder of Equity Institute. In his role, he leads organization-wide strategic and operational planning, ensuring EI's vision is realized through clear prioritization and high-impact operational execution. In addition to helping launch the Equity Institute, he also co-founded re*generation (formerly EduLeaders of Color R.I.). Now an initiative of the Equity Institute, re*generation hosts monthly meetups designed to support education leaders from underrepresented backgrounds.   Before entering his current role with Equity Institute, Carlon was executive director of Breakthrough Providence, served as a City Year AmeriCorps member and Impact Manager, was a classroom teacher, and was a policy fellow for a former Colorado Senator. He graduated from the University of Georgia with undergraduate degrees in criminal justice and political science and completed his graduate degree in education from Rhode Island College. He also earned a graduate certificate in nonprofit management and leadership from the Institute of Nonprofit Practice, in affiliation with Tufts University's Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. Additionally, he completed formal training as a leadership and performance coach. Outside of his full-time work, Carlon is an adjunct instructor at College Unbound. There are many things that can help ease the uneasiness.  Working out and eating right can really truly help with those anxious feelings. Regular exercise releases “feel good” endorphins (natural cannabis-like brain chemicals) and other natural brain chemicals that enhance your wellbeing.Research has shown that regular exercise can release overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize your mood, improve sleep, and also improve your self-esteem. Also eating the right foods and taking specific vitamins can help as well.  Listen to this episode to get great tips on fighting those awful feelings that come with anxiety and depression... we get great advice from all of our guests on this subject who are in the backyard of Weston, Connecticut, Westchester County, NY as well as Boonton, New Jersey! https://uncorkingastory.com/author-services/conversation-with-a-desperate-man/https://www.yourdailydosetribe.com/Jim is the founder and chairman of the Fairfield County Bar Association's Wellness Committee, and is a frequent speaker on the topic of mental health in the legal workplace. I have easily interviewed a few thousand people in my career as a moderator and interviewer. I can honestly say that Interviewing my twin brother about his book, Conversation with a Desperate Man, was one of the toughest interviews I’ve ever had to conduct. It isn’t easy hearing someone you love describe the pain they’ve faced in their lives and the darkness that enveloped them. But his story isn’t a tragedy; far from it. It’s actually a love story and you will hear how Jim was able to overcome the challenges he faced. I had to cut it into two parts because, frankly, it’s a lot to take in at once. Also, Jimmy can be a bit long winded, but I didn’t want to cut anything. Look for the second part to be released this Friday. If you know someone who would appreciate listening to this interview, please share it with them. Jim’s book is available for sale now in paperback or ebook formats wherever books are sold online. Why not show a little love to your local independent bookshop and ask if they can order it for you?  As always, thanks for listening.

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2020 69:45

Today, the Carlon brothers are joined by filmmaker Joe Indusi to discuss 1982s MegaForce. When this film came out, Mike and Jim were 8 years old. Looking back, that must have been the prime demographic for this film because it included flying motorcycles,  glorified dune buggies with lasers, and men with feathered hair—lots of feathered hair. For all the missiles launched from motorcycles, there we no fatalities in this movie which makes us think that the inspiration was the GI Joe cartoon which was becoming popular around the same time. Watching it at 45 is a difficult thing to do, and that's putting it mildly. The plot (is there one?) makes no sense, the gold spandex jumpsuits are cringeworthy, and the one liners just don't land. And wait, is that a Confederate Flag on the sleeve of a character named Dallas? It's like if The Road Warrior and Star Wars had a baby and that baby grew up to wear gold jumpsuits and over use hair mousse, you'd have MegaForce. There is one scene, though, that really stands out. Ace Hunter (yes, you read that right) played by Barry Bostwick (again, you read that right) is mansplaining something to Major Zara, played by Persis Khambatta (you might know her as the Bald Lady in Star Trek The Motion Picture). The scene is a silhouette shot and Barry Bostwick is clearly making a statement with the placement of his right hand (while the left one is finger wagging like Kamala Harris, the right one is placed strategically below his waist).  Unfortunately, while we had fond memories of this flick as kids, it just doesn't hold up but that's okay because it makes our discussion all the more colorful. Happy listening! This episode of Celluloid Zeroes is brought to you by All the F*cks I Cannot Give by Mike Carlon. The writers and director of MegaForce gave no F*cks when making that movie so this is your chance to learn how not giving a F*ck can be the path to self-enlightenment. You can purchase All the F*cks I Cannot Give in audiobook, paperback, or kindle format at Amazon.com. Enjoy the show.

They ask the big questions such as what kid of dirt did the producers have on Jack Palance and was this really just a Dungeons and Drago's rip off of Star Wars? As you may have guessed from the title and cover, this novel is classified as humor and romantic comedy. Lisa tiptoed around stating the complete title like a good Indie Chick! In addition to reviewing the story, Lisa also gave a positive assessment of the book from a self-publishing perspective. I had lots of questions for Lisa about the book and the author including point of view and tense. A brief discussion about POV and tense choice ensued. To read more, visit www.indiechicks.net!

Imagine going through basic training for the US Army as you approach the age of 40. It's a pretty hard thing to do at 18, but at 40 - come on it takes a special kind of person to raise his or her hand and say, "Bring it on," but that is just what Captain James P. Carlon of the US Army Reserve did just a few years ago. If that last name sounds familiar, it should - because it's my last name as well. Jim is my twin brother.  You might be wondering, why interview your twin? Don’t you know everything about him? Well, I’ll tell you why I wanted to talk to Jim and why you should listen – he’s got a great story. Ever since he was in law school, Jim wanted to join the Jag Corps and become a lawyer for the Army but because he was born with asthma, he could never pass the medical exam. But did he give up on his dream? No, he kept at it and finally got in right before the cutoff age of 40.   There’s another reason I wanted to talk to Jim, though. We were pretty inseparable growing up. I mean, we are twins – kind of built in best friends. In fact, I crafted a character in the Farrah graham book series after Jim (for those of you who have read either Uncorking a Murder or The Last Homily – Jimmy Doubts is my brother Jim Carlon). Over the past decade or so we haven’t seen much of each other and I thought it would be a good idea to connect on a Wednesday afternoon on my back porch, roll tape, and see where the conversation takes us. So here it is, my talk with Captain James P. Carlon of the US Army Reserve. This interview is brought to you by my new novel The Last Homily. A Catholic priest is murdered on the altar at a church in Chatham, MA and it is up to Farrah Graham, the host of the uncorking a murder podcast, to find out who did it and why, before the killer strikes again. You can find it at Amazon.com or wherever books are sold online.

Michael Carlon interviews Michael Carlon. Have I finally lost my mind? Should they come and take me to South 1 (the psychiatric ward of Stamford Hospital)? Don't judge me too quickly! In this episode I interview my cousin who also happens to have the same name as me; although he goes by Mick and I go by whatever name anyone in my family is willing to call me at any given time (unfortunately, my mother typically calls me Jimmy but that is another story). Mick Carlon has written two novels based on the lives of famous Jazz musicians; Riding on Duke's Train involves a fictionalized slice of Duke Ellington's life and was published in 2010.  Mick's followup, Travels with Louis, was published in 2012 and involves a story around, you guessed it, Louis Armstrong. Musicians who played with both Ellington and Armstrong have reached out to Mick to let him know how closely he channeled the essence of each musician. Listen up as we discuss where Mick's love of Jazz came from, how he was able to capture and portray with empathy the racism that these musicians faced, and why he does not want to jump on the Zombie bandwagon. I believe that this episode pairs well with nice single malt scotch because, lets face it, Jazz and whiskey go together like the Pope and his ruby red shoes! If you have any feedback on this episode please send along to mcarlon@vertigopartners.com.  If you know someone who would appreciate it, please pass it along.
