Today's guest is Chelsea Martin. I adore indie queens like Chelsea. She has been incredibly prolific thus far in her literary career, and I love her "just do it" approach to publishing. We talk about how to balance perfectionist tendencies with being productive and putting out a lot of work, how to deal with a shitty publisher, the joys of having a good agent, and more. This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats). Episode 7: Chelsea Martin: Tell Me I'm an Artist, Simulacra, and False Consciousness In her newly released Tell Me I'm an Artist, Chelsea Martin's obliquely autobiographical protagonist embarks upon a seemingly absurd project of self-disclosure, embodying the Self as a homebrew remake of Wes Anderson's Rushmore, a film she's never seen. In so doing, she reifies her own identity -- alternately self-reflexive and self-abolishing, embodying the deepest contradictions of the archetypal Outsider -- in ways not possible in any other form. The threat that this project, through its knowing absurdity, poses to the enveloping class-narrative of the elite art school overseeing its creation becomes overwhelming, at last liberating protagonist, author, and reader from the bounds of a totalitarian false consciousness. In this episode, we pay homage to Martin's anarchic methods by meowing nonstop for over twenty-five minutes, an act which has nothing to do with her book, which we know little about and have never read. MEOW is the first and only literary podcast for your cat, conceived and presented in its native language. This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats). Welcome to Open Form, a weekly film podcast hosted by award-winning writer Mychal Denzel Smith. Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. * In this episode of Open Form, Mychal talks to Chelsea Martin (Tell Me I'm an Artist) about the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. BUSINESS BUILDING INSIGHTSWhen someone you don't know has a powerful response to your product, that's a great validation there’s a market for your product. Create connections with potential clients by getting them to experience your product. Putting your product in front of them will do a lot of the selling. Research as much as you can during product development so you can come up with effective strategies to scale your business. There will be investments to produce the quality of the product you are aiming for. Find a way to stand out in your industry. Understand where your product fits in your niche and differentiate to create a unique product. How To Sell Corporate Gifts To CompaniesDon't send your logo-marked products to potential customers you have no relationship with. There's not much motivation for them to keep it. Once you do have a relationship, your logo products will be more welcome. Make sure you're in the right place of the customer journey or are already connected.

There are many things we can look forward to with direct mail. In this episode, Chelsea Martin, the co-owner of Nom's Bake Shop, talks about how direct mail is the new email. Chelsea and her partner didn't begin their journey with direct mail immediately but as they grew the company, they ventured into the direct mail space. This strategy became even more important as they shifted from a cookie company to a gifting company. From a cookie company to a gifting company A lot of people forget about direct mail and how it's an effective way of communicating with clients and prospects. The bake shop started out as a family project for their father who recently retired. It was a hobby that he could enjoy while getting a chance to interact with other people. The company was built with her husband, father-in-law, and sister-in-law. They started with a cookie company and expanded into a gifting company. Entering into the gifting industry as they created cookies that are individually packaged with the customer's or recipient's logo, the cookies are then mailed out in customizable gift boxes. This shift moved them into direct mailing at the same time. The power of direct mail Direct mail allows them to send gifts conveniently and still make the gift meaningful. For companies and clients, it's important to know the specific person you are gifting to versus blindly sending to a company and hoping that it lands in the right hands. To ensure that their cookies don't go stale, they employ different campaigns to reach out to prospects/clients/recipients in order to ask about their shipping addresses and inform them a package is coming. They aren't sending out emails through an automation platform. People are more receptive when there's another human on the other end. Chelsea has been seeing their range and she thinks that it's due to how warm their leads are. They also make case studies to present to their clients/prospects. Regardless of the marketing strategy you employ, it all comes down to who your ideal client is and where your leads are. In business, people generally respond positively when they're treated warmly. There should be an underlying motivation to connect with people. Be authentic in your giving. People are attracted to an energy that is genuine. “Why Direct Mail is the New Email” episode resources Connect with Chelsea Martin on LinkedIn. I know, I get it. We should give gifts to customers. It shows we are paying attention. It shows are thinking a little more about our customers than just, “when can we close this deal.” It’s just that I have received too many emails from sales people saying, “I’ll give you a pair of headphones or a fleece jacket or a gift card, if you meet with me and let me show you our "wiz-bang, automated, AI, big data, digital transformation, IoT, machine learning, data lake product" that will transform how you deliver value to your customers. I have taken up sales people on this offer twice in my life. For two reasons; 1) the gifts were excellent and irresistible (see it works); and 2) I had some interest in the product type they were pitching. After a discovery call and a demo with each, I decided I was not going to buy the products. The gifts arrived. I felt a little guilt. Is gifting worth it? Buyers feel guilty and sellers feel cheated? Then, I spoke to Chelsea Martin, co-owner of Noms Bake Shop about gifts, and she turned me around. There are many ways to give gifts that don’t require a quid pro quo. We talked about gift giving throughout the customer journey. I like that. All of us spend a lot of time mapping out customer journeys and milestones. We should start adding gift giving at the right steps in the customer journey. I can get down with that. Then, Chelsea dropped a bomb of a story about what I believe is the best, creative, COVID-19-world gift a B2B company can deliver. One of her customers ordered cookie boxes to be set to webinar attendees. Let me say that again: A gift box. To webinar attendees. The instructions in the card were to wait to open the box until during the webinar. When they ran the webinar, the host asked everyone to open their boxes, and they all did it together. What a creative, fun thing to do in a webinar to pull people in and bring people together. I am sold. You gotta listen. Chelsea is a genius. Chelsea Martin is the Co-Owner of Noms Bake Shop, the industry expert in the art of convenient corporate gifting that leaves a lasting impression. Often, home-baked cookies toted to soccer practice and school events are birthed from a box mix or store-bought refrigerated dough. The result? A blah-at-best response to a too-familiar flavor and texture. But that was never the case with the cookies Chelsea Martin’s father-in-law made for his children when they were growing up. The goodies were so coveted that their classmates and friends eagerly anticipated their appearance at sports practices and games, and neighbors looked forward to getting a homemade cookie basket at the holidays, which soon became an annual tradition. During this episode of the Lab Coat Agents Podcast, host Jeff Pfitzer speaks with Noms founder Chelsea Martin. Chelsea shares the background of Noms Bake Shop, and how the developments they have coming up could be of particular interest to real estate agents. Plus, find out which cookie flavor she had a hand in creating! Episode Highlights: The Noms cookie recipe comes from Chelsea’s husband’s family, and the company grew incrementally over years until they outgrew the home kitchen and needed a commercial space. They had to think about where they fit in the cookie company market, deciding on a premium presentation, nicer than a basket. The company ended up finding a space in corporate gift giving as a gesture for holidays, birthdays, and events. The gift box has staying power because it’s beautiful and personalized, so recipients are compelled to keep it around. Jeff uses Noms cookies as closing gifts for clients. Cookies are a feel-good gift. One of Noms’ top industries they sell to is real estate and mortgage. Chelsea says now that everyone’s email inboxes are so full of marketing emails that we all know the tricks, so direct mail campaigns are having a comeback. Real estate is a business of relationships and that’s also how Noms started. Chelsea is especially proud when she hears or sees Noms being bought outside of their home base of Arizona. Noms has ideas for upcoming premium boxes that include things like a video message. They do everything, including all customization in house, with no outsourcing. They are rolling out brownies and bars. Noms boxes include a prompt for the recipient to send a video thank you message back to the sender, which also has the dual purpose of generating social media content for your business. They have about 16 flavors including the standard varieties like chocolate chip, plus more unusual and seasonal varieties like peanut butter and jelly, cinnamon pumpkin butter, pineapple and coconut shortbread, and lemon poppyseed. Boxes start at $29.99 and all prices include nationwide shipping. Noms has an in-house designer for the etchings on the boxes and they can help you design something if you don’t have a personal logo or need something to say “Happy Housewarming” or another basic message. They offer bulk orders with discounts if you hit certain thresholds. 3 Key Points: Think about where your business fits in the market. Premium packaging inspires recipients to keep it, and when it has your branding on it, that’s increased exposure. Do one thing well before you branch out. You carry a child. You endure the pain of labor and the joy of looking upon their face for the first time. You care for and nurture this child. One night, you lovingly place your child in its crib and go to bed. You wake in the morning, enter the nursery to check on and feed your baby, you approach the crib and when your eyes meet the tiny little being lying in your babies bed… is not the baby you placed in there the night before. Caca Dolce: Essays from a Lowbrow Life (Soft Skull Press) From a cult favorite and indie-press bestseller who has been called “the preeminent chronicler of Internet-age malaise” (Lena Dunham) and “an exquisite original” (Chloe Caldwell), a candid, tender, and very funny book about relationships, class, art, sex, money, and family. In a fresh, subversive voice that charts her trajectory from a dead-end California town to a burgeoning career as an author and illustrator, cult favorite Chelsea Martin returns with her debut essay collection, Caca Dolce: Essays from a Lowbrow LIfe. Blending the poignant wit of David Sedaris in his bestseller Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim with the feminist candor of Melissa Broder’s So Sad Today and Jessi Klein’s You’ll Grow Out of It, CACA DOLCE is a book about relationships, class, art, sex, money, and family—and about growing up weird, and poor, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Chelsea examines her varied experiences: as an eleven-year- old atheist, trying to will an alien visitation to her neighborhood; fighting with her stepfather and grappling with a Tourette’s diagnosis as she becomes a teenager; falling under the sway of frenemies and crushes in high school; going into debt to afford what might be a meaningless education at an expensive art college; navigating the messy process of falling in love with a close friend; and struggling for independence from her emotionally manipulative father and her hometown family and friends. Praise for Caca Dolce: “Martin’s honest writing exists above the confines of fear and social norms. She is a breath of pure oxygen in a literary environment that often shies away from female grit. . . her writing is sweaty, uncomfortable, and enchanting. She taps into the consciousness of her past selves with precision and care, respecting the integrity and desires of those younger women. A sure hit for fans of Sara Benincasa’s Agorafabulous! and Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl.” —Booklist (starred review) “A wild ride of a memoir, and a true glimpse into the mind of an artist as she’s figuring out what life is all about.” —Nylon “Martin, a writer who’s earned a cult following with her books Mickey and Even Though I Don’t Miss You, turns to nonfiction in her debut essay collection, bringing her irreverent voice to tales of childhood, crushes, art school and the California town she grew up in where people just can’t seem to leave.” —Huffington Post “The arc of growing self-awareness lends the story both gravity and an odd appeal.”—Kirkus Reviews “Deeply human—it’s a lonely book that made me feel less alone.” —Melissa Broder, author of So Sad Today “I highly enjoyed Caca Dolce—a weird, funny, moving, complex memoir that’s excitingly like if Diane Williams edited a 500-page novel down to 200 pages.” —Tao Lin, author of Taipei “Chelsea Martin is one of the best American writers alive. Savage and sharp, tender and hilarious, Martin’s Caca Dolce is a book like she’s never written before. You’ll only think one thing after reading it. Chelsea Martin can do anything.” —Scott McClanahan, author of The Sarah Book “Chelsea Martin delivers neon electric jolts of reality in deadpan perfection. Refreshing, hilarious, self-deprecating, as far from pretentious as you can get.” —Molly Brodak, author of Bandit “I’m probably not Chelsea Martin’s biggest fan because I’m sure she has legitimate stalkers, but I’m way up there. Gold, gold I tell ya.” —Mary Miller, author of The Last Days of California “If David Sedaris were younger, hipper, and had once subscribed to Cat Fancy, he might write like this.”—Elizabeth Ellen, author of Person/a Chelsea Martin is the author of Everything Was Fine Until Whatever; The Really Funny Thing About Apathy; Even Though I Don’t Miss You, which was named one of the Best Indie Books of 2013 by Dazed magazine; and Mickey. Her work has appeared in publications including Buzzfeed, Hobart, Lenny Letter, Vice, and Catapult, and chosen as a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2016. Will Marlon Brando's anguished shout from A Streetcar Named Desire survive as a cultural meme long after Brando himself is forgotten? Will the Stella scream become an enduring cultural reference in the vein of Shakespeare's quotations? In 2011, essayist Elena Passarello won New Orleans' annual Stella scream competition by channelling Brando's abject bawling. This week we speak with her about screams, cries, and the full range of the human voice. How does the body play into the sound of our voice? Is it possible to hear a broken foot bone when a performer speaks or sings? As interviewer Niela Orr puts it, “Passarello's essays are what would happen if Joan Didion wrote captions for VH1's Pop-Up Video.” Passarello's work explores the physical and cultural aspects of the human voice and how they might be connected. Our discussion encompasses vocality from opera, Flavor Flav, and James Brown, as well as automated voices, such as the classic Bell telephone operator, the voice of the Moviefone hotline, and contemporary AI, including Alexa and Siri—and how these automated voices mimic accents and human confusion. You'll also hear Passarello's rendition of how Koko, the gorilla with a lexicon of 1000 signs, tells the legendarily dirty vaudeville joke “The Aristocrats.” You'll also hear fiction from Chelsea Martin on attempts to woo an estranged ex—written in the form of a review of The Organist podcast itself. Special thanks to Mickey Capper and Sidewalks podcast for the use of “Someone like Baby.” Produced by Jenny Ament and Niela Orr.

The New York Times Book Review calls it "Wise and engaging...a provocative study of the way war culture ensnares both participant and observer, the warping fascination of violence, and the disfiguring consequences of the roles we play in public...[a] layered, gorgeously nuanced work…the ending is a quiet bomb, as satisfying as it is ambiguous." And The Daily Beast says "Alarcón is a young, talented writer who is on the cusp of a breakthrough, a state of mind perfectly captured by the compulsively energetic voice of At Night We Walk in Circles...a gripping story."
