Send us a textPicture this: It's Christmas Eve 1984, and outside your home sits an unexpected gift—a 1971 Buick Skylark, your first car! As we travel back to that exhilarating moment, you'll feel the thrill of youthful freedom as I recount installing a pricey stereo system and turning the Skylark into a mobile hub of adventure and camaraderie. Next, we discuss Def Leppard drummer, Rick Allen's horrific car crash 40 years ago and how his determination and an electronic drum kit has kept him rocking all these years. But that's not all. We take a step back to the birth of VH1 on January 1, 1985. Reflect with me on the first ten music videos that hit the airwaves and the quirky stories behind them, including Burt Bacharach's unexpected role in one of the classics. Relive the glory days of music television, laugh at Stevie Wonder's looped love song story, and cherish the unforgettable moments from beloved VH1 shows such as "Pop-Up Video" and "Behind the Music."As the journey progresses, we'll revisit the comical chaos of the Y2K scare, the Snoop Dogg Bowl, and a legendary Ramones concert with Amy Carter. Reflect on the legacy of bands like The Zombies and The Pretenders while uncovering intriguing connections like those of Chrissie Hynde. "Music in My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease Like and Follow our Facebook and Instagram page at Music In My Shoes. You can contact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.com.

Also, Atsuko describes cultivating her incredible HBO comedy special The Intruder, her colorful and vibrant aesthetic, working with Tig and Mike Birbiglia to bring the story of The Intruder to life, and being responsible for the phenomenon that is "The Drop". Christine McVie has passed so we open with Songbird in remembrance. Obviously Scott is very upset about this death. Scott says Stevie Nicks is the Michigan football of the music world. Only one email today. It comes from Danny who thought the latest rendition of Scott's Plan was first-rate! Danny also watched Nope and wants to know what everybody thought of it. Govier watched Kinsey over the weekend. He found a girl in the film who likes just like Adam Scott. Have you seen This is Pop on Netflix? T-Pain was crushed by the overwhelming hate for his endless use of Autotune. This moment reminds us of how much we enjoyed Pop-Up Video on VH1. This opens a rabbit hole of discussion about the year 1999. Was it the best year for film? What jobs were you working that year? Do you remember when Payne Stewart died in that weird jet plane accident? Govier remembers watching the Music City Miracle in real-time while working on a Saturday at Lonestar Steakhouse. Willie Beamen also left the ladies creamin' in 1999. Never forget. Luke drops a bomb about Chomsky expressing that sports are a tool of submission by the masses. Amy Adams has a great sense of humor as she proved for her appearance on Between Two Ferns. Jalen Rose is married to an ESPN talking head and Govier had no idea. Luke is wondering why there is so much sexual deviancy within the ranks of college and professional athletics. Luke also squeezes in a quick word about the possible railroad strike looming over the holiday supply chain. We love you people! We close today's show with a farewell to Christine McVie with Fleetwood Mac's Tell Me Lies. It fills my heart to discuss Storytelling Through a Lens with my long-time friend, six-time Emmy-nominated writer-director and multimedia journalist, Michael Nigro, on this episode of Camera Ready & Abel. Michael brings heart, humanity and a powerful, fresh perspective to everything he does from photography to film to video to print. You have seen Michael's photojournalism, unforgettable images of the January 6th Insurrection, the Caldor Fire in California, Standing Rock, Charlottesville, Virginia, COVID 19 workers, Occupy Wall Street and the migrant caravan in Tijuana. You've also seen Michael's work as a director on National Geographics' Brain Games and as a writer on VH-1's beloved Pop-Up Video. How exactly does one jump from television, to film, to photojournalism? Per Michael: Diversify, diversify, diversify. When Michael knew he was ready to evolve from writer-producer to director he studied what successful directors were doing then created opportunity for himself by shooting short films and a self-funded documentary to build a body of work that demonstrated his skills, talent and point of view. From catwalks to conflicts, Michael will go anywhere (with his camera) "except shopping." View Michael's work here and consider supporting his work as an independent journalist by making a donation.

We began our theme episode with the late-'70s satire Soap. Do the problematic parts justify the hilarity around them? Is some of the bad acting and slow pacing an homage of sorts to daytime dramas? Should you (re-)watch, or just find a supercut of all the previouslies and next-ons? Surprise, we're back! After a couple of weeks away Marvelvision has returned. But no, it's not because Loki is debuting earlier than expected, it's because we're covering the first season of the stop motion comedy series MODOK, which is not set in the MCU but is full of deep, deep nerd cuts. The first 22:26 minutes of this episode are all about the news, including The Eternals trailer and the confirmation that yes, Oscar Isaac is playing Moon Knight. That means we have to talk about how weird it will be if Moon Knight, an eternal D- list character, ends up becoming very popular. Then it's on to MODOK! We certainly don't go into every Easter Egg - this is a show that need Pop Up Video - but we do try to talk about some of the better deep cuts in the show - especially in Episode 4, If Saturday Be... For the Boys! (this show has the best  episode titles). This episode only covers episodes 1-5, and there are no spoilers for episodes beyond that. We will be back next week with the remainder of the season and then it's on to Loki!By the way, if you enjoy this show you might like our other shows. One thing most businesses have in common, especially when it comes to marketing, is they need to get noticed. The attention of followers and potential customers is the key to marketing success. What if you could drastically increase your followers? What if your product or business was at the top of everybody's mind? This recognition would ultimately lead to more sales and business success.    It's actually possible to create legitimate recognition through hype. This is the process of getting more eyeballs on your business by generating and leveraging hype for positive purposes. Hype can be used to create legitimate business success. It can be used to help people. It can also be a catalyst for effecting positive change in your community.    Michael Schein is the author of The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers. He is here today to talk about how recognition and hype can be used for legitimate business recognition. We get to learn how his book and the idea of hype is the culmination of his life's work. We dive into several of the book's concepts, and Michael breaks it all down along with several real-life examples.   Michael is the CEO of Microfame Media, A marketing agency that turns consultants into celebrities in their chosen niche. He has also facilitated content creation and production for companies like the Medici Group, Magento, LinkedIn, and more. He has a degree from the University of Pennsylvania and got his start at Spin the Bottle Inc., which is the production company behind the VH1 show Pop Up Video. He has wanted to be a writer since he was 5 years old, and he's also a contributor to several major online publications. I'm happy to have him here with us today.   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Michael Schein thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. Be proud and keep changing the world.   Join 17,000 subscribers looking to do "business with a soul" and sign up to receive my Self-Employed Nutshell Newsletter! Sign up here!   Highlights –   [02:34] Michael is excited about his book coming out. It's the culmination of his life's work. He's wanted to be a writer since he was 5 years old. [03:52] Recognition and hype are legitimate strategies in business today. A business's biggest challenge is getting eyeballs. [05:58] Human beings respond emotionally to very different stimuli the same way.  [06:23] Michael defines hype as any activity that creates a large emotional reaction in a large number of people to get them to take an action.  [09:18] It's Michael's goal to help great people doing great things use the strategy of hype. [11:48] Picking fights and making enemies. Michael was struggling to get visibility. He wrote a column disagreeing with Gary Vaynerchuk. He received a personal response from Gary Vaynerchuk.   [14:32] Positioning his ideas against Gary Vaynerchuk's ideas launched his career. [17:14] Tribal mentality. The tribal tendency is why creating the us versus them dynamic works so well. We're all tribal about something like an idea or an identity. [20:22] People often get meaning through their tribal identity.  [21:50] Inverting norms. Not all disruption and publicity is created equal. With inverting norms there is already a conversation or trend happening. You want to ride on the coattails of that by flipping it upside down.  [23:34] An example of inverting norms is when the Rolling Stones became the anti Beatles. [24:06] Find your mini Oprah's. She makes careers. Find your niche or area and find an Oprah equivalent in that space and partner.  [26:28] People struggle with change. Small steps make it much easier. [28:39] Are influencers legitimate? Some are really just a new kind of star, but some really do have influence. If the real influencer spread the word about you, you will become noticed. [31:30] Narrative arc. Everyone thinks of themselves as a protagonist in a drama. If you understand that you aren't the protagonist, but the other people are, and what you are offering is the tool to get them where they want to be. [35:06] Start small and reframe what you're doing to help other people's lives. [35:46] Michael tackles the Rapid Round and shares how he calms himself, why you need to find your mini Oprah, and more.    Guest Contact –   Michael Schein Microfame Media Michael Schein LinkedIn Michael Schein Twitter Michael Schein Facebook The Hype Handbook: 12 Indispensable Success Secrets From the World's Greatest Propagandists, Self-Promoters, Cult Leaders, Mischief Makers, and Boundary Breakers Get the HYPE Book Reading Recommendations   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Hugh Grant - Pop! Goes My Heart A Munich Disko Mix By Mr. Turner & Antoine DL >> https://hypeddit.com/track/z3d2v4 "Pop! Goes My Heart" is a song from the movie Music and Lyrics, performed by Hugh Grant, as the singer from fictional eighties band "PoP!" While not credited on the track itself (in the movie's end credits), the second lead vocal performance is provided by the song's co-writer Andrew Wyatt. In the film, the song is categorized as a hit from 1984. It is a parody of the typical songs of the 1980s, including a music video featuring imagery common to the era. The music video plays during the introduction of the film (as well as the beginning of the end credits in the style of Pop-Up Video), and features Grant and Scott Porter. During a Reddit AMA in 2016, Hugh Grant says that he likes to perform all the song's dance moves with his children every day.

How do you feel about marketing? If you’re in sales or have a business, it may be your life blood. But we are all consumers, and sometimes we may feel a bit overwhelmed, spammed and scammed. If that resonates with you, then you’re going to like this episode with Michael Schein, sort of a guerrilla Seth Godin in my opinion.  Michael is the CEO of MicroFame Media, a digital marketing company that implements systems and process that turn businesses into recognized authorities in their fields. His approach is as refreshing as it is successful. He has created or facilitated the production of content for companies such as eBay, LinkedIn, TESLA, and Citrix to name a few. Michael graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with Honors and got his start at Spin the Bottle, the production company behind the VH1 hit show, Pop Up Video. He also created, ran, and moderated the New York Tech Alliance’s Interactive Marketing panel series. Michael was an original co-host of the podcast “Access to Anyone” with Michael Roderick, he writes regularly for publications such as Fortune, Forbes.com, Huffington Post, and Inc. I first came across his work via two pieces he had written—one on Tony Robins and the other on Gary Vaynerchuk, both of which took a bit of a different view than that of many—somewhat of an Emperor and no clothes perspective, and I liked that. No drinking of the Kool Aide in this episode where he discusses the response he got back from Gary following his post, and the counter-tribe that evolved following that. In some ways, this may be one of the most controversial episodes to date, as Michael takes on some of the proverbial sacred cows of the marketing industry with an intelligent and informed point of view. It’s not to be missed no matter what you do. Michael is a sharp-witted writer in an entrepreneur’s clothing. His perspectives on “hype” are historically informed and used for good rather than evil. He lives his life in full, and is not afraid to take more challenging, authentic paths in his work.

Will Marlon Brando's anguished shout from A Streetcar Named Desire survive as a cultural meme long after Brando himself is forgotten? Will the Stella scream become an enduring cultural reference in the vein of Shakespeare's quotations? In 2011, essayist Elena Passarello won New Orleans' annual Stella scream competition by channelling Brando's abject bawling. This week we speak with her about screams, cries, and the full range of the human voice. How does the body play into the sound of our voice? Is it possible to hear a broken foot bone when a performer speaks or sings? As interviewer Niela Orr puts it, “Passarello's essays are what would happen if Joan Didion wrote captions for VH1's Pop-Up Video.” Passarello's work explores the physical and cultural aspects of the human voice and how they might be connected. Our discussion encompasses vocality from opera, Flavor Flav, and James Brown, as well as automated voices, such as the classic Bell telephone operator, the voice of the Moviefone hotline, and contemporary AI, including Alexa and Siri—and how these automated voices mimic accents and human confusion. You'll also hear Passarello's rendition of how Koko, the gorilla with a lexicon of 1000 signs, tells the legendarily dirty vaudeville joke “The Aristocrats.” You'll also hear fiction from Chelsea Martin on attempts to woo an estranged ex—written in the form of a review of The Organist podcast itself. Special thanks to Mickey Capper and Sidewalks podcast for the use of “Someone like Baby.” Produced by Jenny Ament and Niela Orr.

Welcome to episode #542 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Our team at Mirum has launched a interesting program for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. It's a series that takes places across multiple InterContinental properties to tell stories that will get consumers excited about what travel brings into their lives (beyond visiting a different city or country). The first part of this program has been focused on the theme of "fascination." With that, our team connected with famed bestselling author, Julie Klam, at the InterContinental New York Barclay's Gin Parlour for a conversation about the power of fascination. Truthfully, I had nothing to do with this project, but jumped at the opportunity to have Julie on this show. I've been a fan of her work for a long time. Julie Klam interned at Late Night with David Letterman and went on to write for the likes of Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar, and The New York Times Magazine. She also worked on the VH1 television show Pop-Up Video, where she earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Class Writing. She's the author of many narrative non-fiction books like Friendkeeping, Love At First Bark, You Had Me At Woof and Please Excuse My Daughter. Her next book, The Stars In Our Eyes, will look at celebrities, memes and what makes us all so enraptured by those who have influence. So what makes us fascinated? Do we all have the same ability to capture attention like celebrities? Where do great stories come from? Enjoy the conversation...
