Democratic incumbent Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs' recent recount-confirmed victory over Republican challenger Judge Jefferson Griffin by just over 700 votes was, while certainly newsworthy, not unprecedented. In 2020, Republican challenger Paul Newby defeated Democratic chief justice Cheri Beasley by just over 400 votes. Unfortunately, one very big difference surrounds the responses of the […]

In local news, the Appalachian reported on the results of the Watauga County election. In the sheriff's seat, congratulations to the projected winner, the incumbent Len Hagaman Jr.. Hagaman, a Democratic candidate and Watauga local, will be serving his fifth term in the sheriff's position. In the Board of Education, congratulations to projected winners Gary Childers, Jay Fenwick, and Marshall Ashcraft. All three have previously served on the Board and will certainly continue to do a great job working to serve education in Watauga County. Thank you for voting, Watauga County listeners! In statewide results, the Associated Press has called the North Carolina race for a hotly contested Senate seat. Republican Ted Budd defeated Democratic candidate Cheri Beasley with 50.7% of the vote to Beasley's 47.1%. With 98% of the state reporting results, Budd had secured over 100,000 more votes than Beasley. In the House, meanwhile, Democratic candidate Wiley Nickel prevailed over Republican Bo Hines, securing 51.3% of the vote. Nationally, the race is still on, but the Associated Press has called 30 of the 35 seats in contention. At the time of this recording, neither of the major parties have secured the Senate majority, with Democrats at 46 seats and Republicans at 47, and it's looking like it'll be a tight race all the way to the finish line. Over the past couple of years, The Indypendent News Hour has become the premiere news and public affairs show on WBAI, a listen-sponsored community radio station whose signal beams 90 miles in all directions from atop a Midtown skyscraper. On Nov. 8 2022, we expanded our normal one-hour news show into a five-hour election night special. We not only keep track of key races in New York and nationally but provide a deeper analysis of the issues that have animated the midterms — crime, inflation, abortion rights, the threat to democracy — and ones that haven't been discussed nearly enough: the racist backlash to Black Lives Matter, the demise of local news and the spread of conspiracy theories, the growing power of the billionaire class over the rest of society. Throughout the show, we heard live interviews with NYC voters by roving Indy reporters. Here is the five-hour breakdown. FIRST HOUR —Interview with Ben Max, editor of Gotham Gazette, about the most competitive governor's race in New York in a generation as well as key congressional and legislative races that could swing the balance of power in Washington and Albany. —Interviews with Socialist state legislators Jabari Brisport and Phara Souffrant Forrest about Kathy Hochul turning to the New York Left to save her floundering campaign. SECOND HOUR —Interview with legendary NYC journalist Tom Robbins. —Interview with Bob Hennelly about the demise of local media and the national media echo chamber that has been promoting the “red wave” for weeks. —Grassroots report from Florida where Gov. Ron DeSantis is pioneering is testing out his version of homegrown American fascism as prepares to run for President in 2024. THIRD HOUR —Interview with acclaimed Marxist-feminist-anti-racist scholar Linda Martín Alcoff. Will there be a backlash against the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade? If not, why not? —Interview with Indy Contributing Editor Nicholas Powers about the underlying causes of the public hysteria over crime, the rise of conspiracy theories and why working class people of color are now also starting to move away from supporting the Democrats. FOURTH HOUR —Grassroots report from North Carolina where Cheri Beasley is trying to become the first Black woman from the South to be elected to the Senate. —Interview with Mondale Robinson of the Black Male Voter Project. —Interview with Carrie Santoro, executive director of Pennsylvania Stands Up. —Interview with historian Max Elbaum about what the left must do to defeat MAGA and reset U.S. politics in a more progressive direction FIFTH HOUR —Interview with Linda Sarsour, Brooklyn-born Palestinian-American activist, Women's March co-founder and national surrogate for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020. —Grassroots report from Arizona. —Interview with Ron Daniels, President and Founder of the Institute of the Black World 21s Century about the Midterm elections and their impact on Black America.

Vince also shares updated numbers from an Emerson poll detailing the advantage Budd has and compares the races around the nation to the situation in the White House and why it is "elder abuse," + why Vince and Brett think that faith has taken more of a back seat in this election to other issues due to the win at all cost mentality surrounding politics today. North Carolina has been a target for Democrats this election cycle, with Democratic Senate candidate Cheri Beasley out fundraising and outspending her Republican opponent, Congressman Ted Budd, seeking to flip this seat blue. While the Beasley campaign pushes to sway voters in the state, Budd has consistently outpolled Beasley throughout the race, suggesting he may have a slight edge in the election to replace retiring Republican Senator Richard Burr. GOP Congressman Ted Budd of North Carolina's 13th District joins to explain how he sees inflation severely hurting his constituents ahead of the midterms, how he would address rising crime by supporting border control and law enforcement, and he later shares why he believes his America-first campaign is resonating with voters. In a speech he gave last weekend, Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed that he would not rule out the reunification of Taiwan by force, suggesting Beijing will speed up plans to annex the island. In her debate with Republican Rep. Ted Budd on Friday, Cheri Beasley said she supported the "protections and restrictions" of Roe v Wade. At Friday's US Senate debate between Cheri Beasley and Ted Budd, the Democratic candidate stated that inflation was the most pressing issue facing the nation, but that it was driven by corporations "price gouging" and by the cost of prescription drugs. "Corporations are seeing 70-year record profits and using that as a cover for inflation and jacking up prices," Beasley said. But this doesn't make any sense, as profits don't "cover for inflation." If anything, record-high inflation would make profits look higher, due to the inflated value of the currency. Friday night saw the first (and only) debate for US Senate in North Carolina. It was aired on Spectrum News: The two top candidates running for North Carolina's open seat in the U.S. Senate, Republican Ted Budd and Democrat Cheri Beasley, met for a debate in Raleigh on Friday night. Hosted by Spectrum News 1, Friday's debate is the only time the two candidates were scheduled to meet before the Nov. 8 election. Writing at Longleaf Politics.com, Andrew Dunn said Budd hammered Beasley as a rubber stamp for the Biden agenda, and didn't make any serious mistakes. Debates are about moments, as Democratic strategist Morgan Jackson pointed out when he made the rounds on the state's political podcasts this week. Last night's U.S. Senate debate between Ted Budd and Cheri Beasley really had just one. Moderator Tim Boyum asked both candidates about their relationship with the leaders of their parties — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Budd handled it decently well, pointing out economic growth under the previous administration, and saying Trump endorsed him because he's “America First.” Beasley … well, she didn't handle it well at all. When asked whether she'd stand on stage next to President Biden were he to come campaign in North Carolina, Beasley awkwardly danced around the question. After stumbling, she said she'd have to see if she was available. As Western Carolina University political scientist Dr. Chris Cooper said, "There was no mic drop moment." The Democrat candidate for US Senate in North Carolina is trying to put distance between her campaign and the "Defund the Police" movement that infected the party over the past 2 years. Cheri Beasley held a news conference yesterday surrounded by about a dozen current and former law enforcement officials. She said, "I do not support defund the police." Beasley's Republican opponent, Rep. Ted Budd, has won endorsements from law enforcement groups like the NC Troopers Association and the National Border Patrol Council. But Beasley has cozied up to far left Democrats. She signing on to a joint fundraising committee with socialist Squad member Rep. Corrie Bush (D-MO). In 2020, as NC Supreme Court Chief Justice, she donned her robe and issued a video from her chambers pronouncing the NC judicial system unequal. "Too many people that there are two kinds of justice. They believe it because that is their lived experience - they have seen and felt the difference in their own lives. The data also overwhelmingly bears out the truth of those lived experiences. In our courts, African Americans are more harshly treated, more severely punished and more likely to be be presumed guilty." Her words were later used in criminal appeals. She lost her re-election bid later that year. Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You're likely pretty familiar by now with emails from politicians asking you to donate to their campaigns, but today on "Breaking with Brett Jensen," Brett talks about the data these politicians use and how it is presented. Recently here at WBT we got very similar emails from Ted Budd and Cheri Beasley who are set to face off in this November's Senate election. While using very different language, both emails said essentially the same thing: donate to us or you're doomed, with both citing data from the same polls as reasons why. Brett dives into these polls as well as the emails themselves to demonstrate how Budd and Beasley managed to send such different messages with the same information + shares his thoughts on how he sees polls for both candidates changing between now and election day. For more tune into "Breaking with Brett Jensen," each weeknight here on WBT from 7-8! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with how the reversal of Roe v. Wade is rocking America, and the fact that Justice Clarence Thomas wants the Court to take away even more rights. We also discuss the January 6th committee's surprise hearing on Tuesday, and the possibility of new evidence requiring this special hearing. Then, an executive at a real woman's health center warns us about deceptive "crisis pregnancy centers," which are in reality anti-abortion entities that spread disinformation to women in need of reproductive healthcare. Plus, Cheri Beasley, a former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice, who is now the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in that state, explains how voters must be engaged in this election in order to protect reproductive freedoms. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

This week on FLASHPOINT, WCNC's Ben Thompson is joined by U.S. Senate hopeful Cheri Beasley. Beasley was the first African-American woman to serve as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Beasley discusses why she thinks President Biden has earned a 'B' grade for his first seven months as head of state, her plans for NC ahead of the 2022 election, and more. Next, Ben sits down with Republican National Convention spokesman Paris Dennard on how the committee wants to appeal to voters of color ahead of the 2022 election. This week, Dennard spoke to a group of Black conservatives in Charlotte. Dennard said the RNC is putting down roots in key battleground states, hoping to make inroads with black voters. "When you look at the things people are concerned about; safety and security, making sure they have jobs and the economy. Those are things that are applicable to all walks of life," Dennard explained. All of this and more on FLASHPOINT!
