Themes of food in literature inspire questions of resistance, cultural memory, gender and identity. This episode titled Khayali Pulao: On Food Writing touches upon food and food politics in Indian writing. Here, it is not merely a marker of identity, but can be a source of joy as well as pain and alienation. Writers Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Sumana Roy discuss the ways in which food operates to construct nostalgia and to evoke historical and individual memory. Along the way, it can also expose class, caste and gender divides in society. It may mean coming together as family and sharing bonds of sisterhood but fictions about food can also express hunger, poverty, displacement and subsequent marginalization. Roy reads the poem "The Astonishing Smell of Rice" by Birendra Chattopadhyayon which is about hunger and how the refrain is a reminder of circadian rhythms broken by hunger pangs. Divakaruni's writings use food as symbols of diasporic identity and even feminist solidarity. She argues that food can bring about an ethos of feminist empowerment and sisterhood beyond the stereotypes of gender. Both writers come together to engage food in Indian writing across various registers. They highlight the significance of “eating cultures” and also reveal their favorite foods and what they like to cook! Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an Indian-born American author, poet, and Betty and Gene McDavid Professor of Writing at the University of Houston's Creative Writing Program. Divakaruni started out as a poet and her poetry collections include Black Candle and Leaving Yuba City. Her first collection of stories Arranged Marriage won an American Book Award and a PEN Josephine Miles Award. Her novels include The Mistress of Spices, Sister of My Heart, Queen of Dreams, One Amazing Thing, Palace of Illusions, Oleander Girl and Before We Visit the Goddess. She has also written a young adult fantasy series called The Brotherhood of the Conch which is located in India and draws on the culture and folklore of that region. Divakaruni's work has been published in The Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, and her writing has been included in anthologies including the Best American Short Stories, the O. Henry Prize Stories, and the Pushcart Prize anthology. Her fiction has been translated into 29 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Indonesian, Bengali, Turkish and Japanese. Divakaruni's novel The Mistress of Spices was made into film of the same name in 2005 starring Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai. and her novel Sister of my Heart was made into a television series by Suhasini Maniratnam in Tamil and aired in India, as Anbulla Snegithiye (Loving Friend). Sumana Roy is an Indian writer and poet. Her works include How I Became a Tree (2017), a work of non-fiction; Missing (2019), a novel; Out of Syllabus (2019), a collection of poems; and My Mother's Lover and Other Stories (2019), a short story collection. Her unpublished novel Love in the Chicken's Neck was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize (2008). She is the co-founder and co-editor of the journal On Eating : A Multilingual Journal of Food and Eating. Her first book, How I Became a Tree, a work of non-fiction, was shortlisted for the 2017 Shakti Bhatt Prize. Roy is from Siliguri, a city in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. The more experienced writers are aware that the hardest thing to do is to write without trying to be clever. Some writers are born to coruscating prose. And then there are those who can entertain readers without having to use words like...coruscating.My guest today—Chitra Divakaruni— is such a writer.Reading Chitra is like traveling in a car with an excellent suspension—you don't feel the potholes. Or maybe that's because there are no potholes in her prose. Her writing is not only honest, sincere and without artifice, but also vivid. So vivid that film makers seem to be falling about making movies out of everything she writes. The Mistress Of Spices—starring Dylan McDermott and Aishwarya Rai—is one famous example. Sister Of My Heart was turned into a TV show in Tamil called Anbulla Snegitheiye (Beloved Friend). Her stories have been turned into movies, plays, even opera. To say that Chitra Divakaruni's prose is romantic or evocative is to fall to spewing platitudes. What any writer, critic or serious reader of books needs to understand is that Chitra's consistently good writing comes from craft not from a random muse. For that qualification, she is a professor at Houston University teaching creative writing. Her most recent book The Last Queen is a historical account of Rani Jindan, wife of then Maharaja of Punjab, Ranjit Singh and mother of the next Maharaja, Dalip Singh. The book may be categorized as historical fiction but the fiction is in the gaps of the story. The historical account is rich and—I'll say it—evocative. And now it is my pleasure to present one of the best known Indian writers Chitra Divakaruni.ABOUT CHITRA BANERJEE DIVAKARUNIChitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author, poet, activist and teacher. She is the author of 20 books including Mistress of Spices, Sister of My Heart, Oleander Girl, Before We Visit the Goddess and Palace of Illusions. Her latest novels are The Forest of Enchantments, a feminist retelling of the epic The Ramayana in the voice of Sita, and The Last Queen, the story of Maharani Jindan, the indomitable queen regent of Punjab who fought the British in many ingenious ways. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Priya Atwal have both evoked the spirit of the beautiful Maharani Jindan Kaur through fiction and fact. Kaur was regent of the Sikh Empire from 1843 until 1846. She was renowned for her energy and strength of purpose with the Governor General Dalhousie writing of her, “She has the only manly understanding in the Punjab”. Divakaruni has previously authored the celebrated books The Palace of Illusions, Mistress of Spices and The Forest of Enchantment. Her latest book is The Last Queen. Atwal's recent book, Royals and Rebels: The Rise and Fall of the Sikh Empire, showcases the centrality of female agency within the expansion of Sikh sovereignty. In conversation with Navtej Sarna, author of several works of fiction and non-fiction including The Exile, a novel based on the life of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Sikh King and son of Maharani Jindan, the three authors bring alive a fascinating tale of the splendour and downfall of a mighty kingdom, court intrigue, colonial deception and greed, as well as motherhood and feminine strength.

Jenn and guest Christina Orlando discuss novels in verse, Hannibal read-alikes, fiction about Lyon, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by TBR and The Lost Man by Jane Harper. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Questions 1. Hi guys! I’m looking for some novels in verse to read. I’ve always been a big fan of poetry, but never read to many novels in verse. Recently however I read Anne Carson’s amazing Autobiography of Red, and discovered a new favorite book. Now I’m looking for more novels in verse, but don’t know what’s good, or really where to start. I know of Brown Girl Dreaming from this show and have ordered it- so I’ll be reading that soon. Obviously I’ve read the classic epic poetry, like Homer, Virgil, and Ovid, etc. I’m open to any genre or themes, and I enjoy a wide variety of different poets. I read a lot of classic and modern poetry, so I’m not afraid of jumping into anything a bit dense. -Lisbeth   2. I am going to Lyon in March and would love some reading material to get me even more excited than I already am. Historical Fiction is definitely my favorite, but I like all genres, including romance, young adult, and non-fiction. Some of my most beloved authors include Ruth Reichl, Rose Lerner, Barbara Pym, Becky Chambers, Jess Kidd, Naomi Novik, and Patricia Lockwood. Please only women authors. Thank you! -Hillary   3. Hello ladies! I’ve been a fan of the podcast for a year now and because of it, my TBR seems endless. Yet here I am! My all time favorite show is NBC’s Hannibal (I do like the movies and books, but the show is light years better in my opinion) and after watching it for the fifth time I decided I need something else that is similar because my friends and family will murder me if I ever mention it again. I’m looking for something that’s equally dark and twisted but aesthetically beautiful. My favorite thing about the show was the complex, love-hate relationship between protagonist and antagonist, the way they blurred into one at times, their exploration of good and evil, but also how intentionally pretentiousness the whole show is. Some books that have kind of helped fill the hole so far were Song of Achilles (mostly because of the wonderful, flowery writing) Vicious, If We Were Villains, The Secret History and Born, Darkly. I’d love anything you could find that is remotely like this, bonus points for good queer rep. Thank you and hope y’all are doing good. -Celina   4. Hi ladies! Thanks so much for all the bookish fun! I’m looking for a book of poetry as a gift for my spouse. They like Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus, Paul Celan, and other lyrical poems about the human condition. Themes of love and inspiration are ideal but not required. I would prefer to support a living poet, and appreciate any recommendations! Thanks! -Lindsey   5. The greatest tragedy of my life is that Hanya Yanagihara has only released two books. I loved them both, particularly A Little Life. For two years I’ve been looking for books that give me the same feelings, especially books with queer characters and I need some help. Thank you! -Ellie   6. Hello! I typically read hard fantasy, but once in a while I crave something a little lighter. When I’m in that reading mood I have really enjoyed magical realism stories with a romantic plot or sub plot. I love the lush and lyrical writing. I enjoyed The Weight of Feathers and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. The Night Circus is definitely on my list, but I was hoping you could give me some more diverse options please. I enjoy Toni Morrison and Octavia Butler because of their strong voices and unique subject matter. What I am really looking for is beautiful writing, a ending that makes you feel happy and fulfilled, and a story that makes you turn the page because it is just so darn lovely. Thank you for the recommendations! -Kyla   7. Hi ladies! I recently finished reading Red Clocks by Leni Zumas, and I really, really loved and related to Ro (the biographer) and Gin’s (the mender) independence. They didn’t have current romantic/life partners, and they weren’t agonizing over being alone or over trying to find someone. I am getting sick of novels where women spend a lot of time worrying about being “on the shelf.” I would like to read more books with women who are single and proud, and romance isn’t anywhere near the top of their priority list. I am willing to read any genre, length, or format. Can’t wait to hear what you have to recommend! Thanks so much!
