Chris DeStefano brings a rare set of skills to the writer's room. Trained in film scoring at Berklee, Chris's knowledge of musical mechanics allows him to break out of ruts in writing sessions and infuse his songs with depth and gravitas. From singing in a boys choir in Austria, to session work in LA, to playing in a Salsa band in Las Vegas, to writing hits for Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood, Chris's story proves of one of our favorite themes on this podcast: no matter where your songwriting journey takes you, nothing is wasted. Hey friends! We are back with another episode of Stories Behind the Songs and this week we sit down with Chris DeStefano! Chris has written songs for so many amazing artists like Luke Bryan, Chase Rice, Dan and Shay, Carrie Underwood, Chris Young, Morgan Evans, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Jake Owen, Thomas Rhett, Jason Mraz – JUST to name a few... I mean the list goes on and on. Chris is not only an incredible writer, but he is an amazing guitar player and has a great voice... If you've never seen him live or play at the Listening Room, you are going to hear exactly what I mean later in this episode when he plays a couple of his songs... Chris came to Nashville from New Jersey back in 2013 and started to hit the ground running with his first write in town turning into a cut for Eli Young Band. Chris has been dedicated to his music since the beginning spending 10 – 12 hours a day learning guitar and traveling with his choir group growing up... Moving to Nashville was a no brainer for him. We cover topics like the difference between the songwriting community in Nashville and LA, a deep dive into several of his cuts including “Something in the Water” and “Good Girl” for Carrie Underwood, “I Feel Like Dancing” for Jason Mraz, “Rewind” for Rascal Flatts, and his cut for Chris Young - “End of a Bar”. Chris takes us into the writer's room with Carrie Underwood and Chris Young – you're going to feel like you were there with them that day – these are incredible stories. We also touch on his publishing company “Winsongs” and Chris discusses how he started it and how it has taken off since, with writers like Emily Shackleton, Jason Duke, and Eric Van Houten on the roster – and all of them have found their way on this podcast. Give Chris a follow in the liner notes below to stay up to date and give us a follow if you enjoyed the episode – we are able to sit down with amazing songwriters and artists thanks to your support! We also want to give a special shout-out to our sponsors Sennhesier, Imperfect Aesthetician, and Alclair In Ears – if you're looking for a good set of in-ear monitor make sure to take advantage of our code “SBTSONGS” at checkout for 10% off! Recorded: July 6th 2023 | On this weeks episode, Willy is back from his Italy trip and he gives us the full rundown on it all. He also gets into the full blown war he got into with Expedia and how he came out victorious. Will also gets into how his boss, Dave Portnoy, bought back Barstool for $1 and how massive that is. We have your favorite weekly segments as well. Following the intro, the boys sit down with comedian Chris DeStefano. Chris and the boys immediately get into the hard hitting topics of American Pride and that we should have gender reveals on the 18th birthday. Chris is a New York guy through and through and talks about how he never sees himself leaving the state. Chris then talks about how there was a period of time where he didn't like who he was becoming because he felt that he was only doing things for the money. He talks about the toll that it all took on him and how he got out of that funk. Chris also talks about how if he were to ever get canceled, he would just make content out of it and be able to make fun of himself. The boys then bounce around all of the place. They get into the GOATs of the food industry, a list that you would not see coming. How people should not make being a sports fan their entire identity and that only children should be the only ones who wear jerseys. Also the moment that Will and Taylor realized that they were good enough to make it to the NFL, which is a cool story. Chris also gives some insight into the comedy culture. He talks about how many comedians can truly sell out wherever they go, which the number might surprise you. He also talks about how inviting the comedy community is and how some guys will help each other out. Chris is a hilarious dude and has some really good one liners in here that will definitely give you a chuckle. West Seneca's Eric Van Houten is now a Nashville resident pursuing his dream of country music superstardom. His 2022 full length album "Dreamers" (available everywhere music can be found) is gaining national recognition. His talent has been so recognized that country songwriter Chris Destefano, who's written #1 hits for Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and MIranda Lambert, has started writing for Eric. He'll be back in WNY performing live at the Howl in the Hills concert August 6th at Holland Speedway. The show also features Gary Levox from Rascal Flatts. I'm admittedly rock n roll to the core but this interview impressed me enough to dip my toe into the country world and I was moved for sure. Enjoy it! Subscribe, like, laugh, share with every country music fan you know and spread the Bull in the Basement love! Thank you as always!
