We’re going to find out on todays episode. If you think about it, the comms channels are the same and we would go through the same Marketing planning or strategy, but there must be some differences by way of using the rational and emotional to influence how we think and feel. To help us understand all this we’re chatting to Chris Strub. Chris helps non-profits make a huge impact by leveraging the power of video to create meaningful change. Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and The Salvation Army to name just two charities Chris has worked with, he is currently focused on hands-on training sessions and live-streamed event hosting in communities around the world. Chris’s notoriety came in the summer of 2015, when he quit his job to take a solo, unsponsored road trip to all 50 US states, over 100 days visiting and helping charities along the way – inspiring the book ‘50 states, 100 days’ Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/oZjrHcwjcIA Takeaways - Think about the emotional connection you can create. Take a look at some of the most successful brands in the world – Apple, Coca-Cola, Disney, they all use emotion to make a connection with their audience and stay front of mind. Be it through lifestyle, innovation and latest tech or imagination. So how will you spark emotional connections with your audience? - Use video to show the impact your service is having. It’s not about what you do, no one really cares, it's the problems you solve (this we found out on the special episode recorded with Ryan Foland back in October 2019 - https://bit.ly/39dSMA9) and showing this through video content can work amazingly well. - Finally, go behind the scenes. Consistency in content is key and we all need to be thinking like a TV station and producing quality content on a regular basis that goes behind the scenes of what we actually do. Letting people in, being authentic, open and honest can resonate much better than the standard corporate business ‘this is what we’re all about’, staged video can – so let’s be seeing the real you, the real business and the problems that you are solving. Chris Strub returns to What's The Word? to share about the growth of live streaming. Strub is the founder of I Am Here, LLC, a company that work with both for-profits and nonprofits to help them improve their social media strategies andlevel up their use of video. He has spoken at events like Social Media Marketing World and is a contributor to Forbes. Website: www.teamstrub.com Twitter: @chrisstrub LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/chrisstrub/
Chris Strub's goal is simple: to grow his personal brand, to try to use that brand for social good by promoting nonprofits, and to make the world a better place. His I Am Here organization is an “umbrella” over the wide variety of entrepreneurial marketing activities he pursues around the U.S. . . . and the world. He feels the power of personal branding can be assessed through an individual's use of Twitter and Instagram. For his “50 States, 100 Days” project (May 15th to August 21st, 2015), Chris, a native New Yorker, traveled clockwise around the United States, starting in Greenville, SC, his adopted hometown, and ending his 4,500 mile journey in Asheville, NC. He traveled alone. In each state, he worked with a different youth-related nonprofit organization, shared all of their stories on iPhone-generated livestreaming video and Snapchat, and earned bragging rights as the first person to live-stream in all fifty states. Chris has a hunch that 50 States, 100 Days will be his keystone project – it has opened thousands of doors for him. Chris authored the book, 50 States, 100 Days. The Kindle version of this amazing journey through 50 States in 100 Days is available on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/50-States-100-Days-Book-ebook/dp/B019J7MA3Y. The print version is at: https://www.amazon.com/50-States-100-Days-Book/dp/1483594726. Oh, and the movie? Chris admits that the quality was not the best, but you can order a screening of that . . . and get tips for nonprofits who need to “up their game” with improved technologies he has since discovered on his website at teamstrub.com. In Fall of 2018, Chris launched GivingDayGuy.com. In this capacity, he partners with “giving days" nationwide, promoting collaborative localized fundraising events, training nonprofit organizations on social media marketing strategies, and live-streaming their stories. These efforts produce a phenomenal financial “harvests” for the nonprofits, donor satisfaction, and strengthened community ties. A win all around. Chris was interviewed at the 2019 Social Shake-Up in Atlanta, GA, where he spoke on Visual Storytelling. Chris Strub is the creator beyond “50 States, 100 Days: The Film”, a documentary that chronicles the life-changing adventure that Chris Strub took to work with nonprofits nationwide in the summer of 2015. Chris also authored ’50 States, 100 Days: The Book’ and today is known as the Giving Day Guy, partnering with communities of nonprofits around the United States to help them use live-streaming video to connect in real time with their audiences during 24-hour online giving days. Beyond his work with nonprofits, Chris is a sought-after speaker, a Forbes contributor, and is widely known as an expert on creating engagement through organic social media. During our interview we discuss the origins of Chris’ mindset, how to leverage social media to create real relationships, giving out loud, and much, much more. Places to Find Chris: On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/chrisstrub/ (@ChrisStrub) On Twitter https://twitter.com/ChrisStrub (@Chris Strub) Show Notes: [3:00] minute: Set the stage for us first, what was life like for you growing up, and what was the mindset around money and success and giving that was instilled in you? Raised in a healthy family with a close relationship with his parents. Treat people how you want to be treated, use respect. Morals most important; work hard to create larger financial return. Where and how Chris met Dorothy. Meeting someone in real life so important. [7:30] minute: You are really known for being an expert at creating relationships with people through social media. If someone is in a position where they are just starting a business and don’t have the ability to travel to a lot of events right away, how can they leverage social media to create relationships? Creating local meet ups through social media. See that return on investment locally and then move onto regional travel after that. Don’t be intimidated by the larger events as the smaller ones can often be the most impactful. [10:00] minute: So let’s shift gears and tell me the story of how this 50 States, 100 days adventure, how was that inspired and what sorts of organizations were you working with? In 2015 Chris quit his job and visited non-profits in all 50 states in a 100 day road trip. Made a film about it. Inspired by his friend and his organization Payaway Layaway, decided he needed to change more people’s lives. “Why not go? What’s stopping me? Nothing.” Worked with organizations of all sizes and all different types. [13:45] minute: When you give out load, you inspire other people. The perception of giving in secret has downsides. The power in giving out loud is immense. Most are shy about wanting their stories told or their efforts noticed. Explanation of Giving Days [16:45] minute: You have a backround in newspapers and you said in your book that you knew how to make a story compelling, so could you share with our listeners what some of those elements are? Did all his own PR and messaging during his trip. Local news outreach; they didn’t need to care where else he had been because he is there and with them. Having someone else do it for him would have felt sterile. [19:30] minute: Majority of my listeners are online business owners, so for them, how can they leverage the power of storytelling with media and their own content? Starts with video. People want to connect with people. Businesses want to support the other businesses around them. What are you creating? Not just a video, but a series of videos. [21:45] minute: I’m curious what your strategies are in creating consistent engaging content. Your time can be pulled in so many directions, so what tips do you have for busy entrepreneurs who struggle with getting that content out day to day? Keep up with the people who reach out to you. Don’t create content to create content. Important to be responsive, that is first. Doing “Twitter and treadmill”...

Chris Strub is the CEO of I Am Here, LLC, a social media consultant agency, and an expert on how to get your brand noticed, discussed and promoted. He is also the author of 50 States, 100 Days - The Book and the first person to livestream in all 50 United States, both of which allowed him to promote youth-centric nonprofit organizations across the country. Through his extensive experience with social media over the last decade, Chris knows what will and what will not get people talking about you. In this episode, Chris lays out how he and other experts have pioneered this era of social media branding, reveals how you can make a name for yourself on Twitter, and explains why everything boils down to getting people to talk about you. The Finer Details of This Episode: Chris explains the 50 States, 100 Days challenge and the roadtrip that gave him the idea. The very personal reason Chris got into nonprofit work. How old media actually helped Chris develop his skills with new media. Explaining why this decade’s successful social media brands will be seen as pioneers by future generations. Chris makes his case for Twitter and how it’s an excellent tool for professional AND personal networking. Why he thinks Twitter is far from the dying platform some people have said it is. Chris’ biggest piece of advice for getting started: ignore your follower account. The one tweet that can help you set yourself up for success as an online destination. Having an excellent product does nothing unless people are talking about it. Why selling and branding won’t mean much unless you have a solid product or service to back it up. The sheer hard work and coordination it takes to turn your brand into something reputable. What Chris hopes his customers and the people he regularly engages with would say about him. Chris Strub has such a giving and kind way about him - the future of how leadership should be viewed. Leading with vulnerability, hope, and social giving for good, Chris has already been to all 50 states and the first to livestream/Snapchat in all of them. He's also a well-sought after keynote speaker and really ready to ascend the mountain and take center stage to national giving day events. Yet, he's slept in his car during his journeys and currently is an Uber driver and working at a pizza shop to make sure that his dreams have enough runway for takeoff. How do we get Chris to propel his Next Action to success? Listen in as we discuss the power of national media, focus on key events/sponsorships, leveraging your network for press, and LinkedIn video.

Can and should businesses be using the social media platform Snapchat in their marketing strategy? In this podcast, we are chatting with Snapchat darling, Chris Strub. Chris is passionate about helping nonprofits develop real-life social media strategies, especially with LIVE VIDEO! Connect with Chris here: http://www.teamstrub.com/ HOW DO YOU USE SNAPCHAT TO DELIVER YOUR MESSAGE? The best feature of Snapchat is THE CAMERA!! Just get on and talk with people, tell them who you are and what you are about, and if they like what they see and hear they will connect! Stringing 10-second videos together throughout the day is definitely something marketers need to take a serious look at. HOW DO STORIES WORK IN SNAPCHAT? There are many different ways to tell a story on Snapchat. You could tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Or you could use it to give viewers a glimpse into your business. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR STORY SHOULD LOOK LIKE? We are all famous to a group of people, so it all depends on your audience. Speak to your audience!! Give your customer the information and entertainment they are looking for. "IT IS OKAY TO SERVE THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU! Remember your message has value and there are people who want to hear it. Communicate with the people who want to connect with you! Not all your Snaps will be a home run, but you take that knowledge and improve. Social Media can feel like an arms race to see who can come up with the "next best thing," but completely useless unless you connect with your customers!

Frankie Greek (@FrankieGreek) is Social Media Manager at Fuse Media and Social Media Coordinator for the Shorty Awards. Her background in television and radio have also helped her establish the skill sets required to succeed in both Snapchat and live-streaming. My actual introduction to her came when I learned she would be running the Snapchat account (which she launched, by the way) for the Times Square Ball. This episode is a long-time coming and it was joy to learn about how Frankie went from Penn State Grad to where she is today. This week's episode also features questions from Chris Strub and Patrick Jervis-Stone This Week on Why I Social, Frankie and I discuss: How studying radio and broadcast helped her get where she is now. Most startups depend on word-of-mouth marketing to create awareness of their new product, and iOgrapher is no different. But what makes iOgrapher unique is its focus on customer service as a driver of that word of mouth. “The convergence of marketing and customer service is key for us,” says Founder and CEO David Basulto, who describes iOgrapher as “literally a garage startup” (and we can confirm: his interview on Blab was done from his garage!). iOgrapher sells a proprietary line of cases, lenses, microphones, tripods, and LED lighting to turn almost any iPhone or iPad owner into a traveling video producer. The company’s motto is “Life, Camera, Action”, and it counts Brian Fanzo, Mari Smith, the Miami Dolphins, the Boston Celtics, Manchester United, the BBC, and Harvard University as its fans. “You have to live and breathe and believe your vision, your company, 24/7,” Basulto says about being an entrepreneur. He has a background as an executive producer at Lifetime Television and more recently as a teacher, but today he spends much of his time personally responding to customers on social media. His goal on Twitter is to answer questions “within a few minutes” – “unless I’m sleeping”. Customer service is what caused Brian Fanzo (a Shorty Awards nominee for Periscoper of the Year) to talk about iOgrapher during a ’Scope at the Periscope Summit, and what caused fellow live-streamer Chris Strub to tweet about it using the Focus on Customer Service hashtag (#FOCS). A week later, iOgrapher’s founder and CEO is a guest on the Focus on Customer Service podcast – talk about word of mouth! Basulto’s newest fixation? Snapchat. For customer service. “I love the personal-ness of it,” he says, telling the story of how he easily rectified a new customer’s problem via the video platform because he could see that the man had plugged in his cables backwards. The result: A happy customer who tweeted “Wow, I just talked to the CEO and he told me how to fix it”. iOgrapher has also used social media listening to determine what kind of content to create, including tutorials on Snapchat and Instagram. “I’m providing an entire online film school,” says Basulto, adding that he tracks questions he gets on Facebook, and if he gets enough of the same one, he’ll create a video tutorial on YouTube and point people there. He has also used social media feedback for product development – including an upcoming line of Android cases. With its active presence on multiple social media channels, and Basulto’s willingness to engage with customers wherever they are, iOgrapher has created a community of influencers who “feel like part of the family” because the company continually engages with them with both text and video. Startups and existing businesses alike can learn a lot from Basulto’s approach to social media engagement and customer service, which he shares in Episode 24 of the Focus on Customer Service podcast. Here are some of the key moments in the podcast and where to find them: 1:43 David’s background and how he developed the first product that became iOgrapher 4:35 How David ended up at “the right place at the right time” with the advent of livestreaming 6:06 How iOgrapher uses multiple channels – including video – for customer service 9:34 How David plans to scale social care to handle larger volumes 11:05 Using Snapchat for customer service 12:57 David’s strategy of using influencers for engagement for both marketing and service 16:32 How other brands might use video or livestreaming for customer service 18:53 (Audience question) The challenges of tracking customer interactions on Snapchat 20:56 The role of iOgrapher’s Facebook community in content creation and product development 22:38 What’s next for iOgrapher and why it’s the “year of customer service” 26:22 David’s advice to other entrepreneurs on how customer service plays a role in making a startup succeed
