Ant Williams is a freediving athlete featured in the third episode of The Adventure Series titled "Ice Dive" that's co-produced by Apple and Atlantic Studios (formerly Atlantic Productions). In the episode, Williams attempts to swim a world record distance 182 meters under ice, and I wanted to get some additional behind-the-scenes context on his experience as well as what it was like to have the most intense month of his life condensed down into a 15-minute Apple Immersive Video. Williams is a sports psychologist who wanted to put his theories into practice by taking what he calls "positive, calculated risk-taking challenges" that allow him to deal with overwhelming anxiety, and overcome his fears, uncertainty, and self-doubt. I also wanted to get some additional context on the production of the episode as Apple has otherwise been pretty tight-lipped about the series, launched with which launched with "Highlining" on the same day as the Apple Vision Pro launch on February 2, 2024. Apple Immersive Video is a different format than spatial video. Apple says "spatial videos are captured in 1080p at 30 frames per second in standard dynamic range," and these are what can be captured by either an iPhone or Apple Vision Pro, and they are displayed in a windowed frame where you see the stereoscopic effects. Apple describes Apple Immersive Video as "a remarkable storytelling format that leverages 3D video recorded in 8K with a 180-degree field of view and Spatial Audio to transport viewers to the center of the action." Apple Immersive Video is much closer to what we've seen from the XR industry and VR 180 filmmakers from the past decade, and Apple's technology is likely derived from their 2020 acquisition of NextVR. NextVR focused on live stereoscopic broadcasts of sports events on VR headsets starting with the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift in 2014. A lot of the technical specifications of the Apple Immersive Video format have not been officially confirmed by Apple, but there are a couple of breadcrumbs that give us some more details. Thanks to iFixIt's breakdown of the Apple Vision Pro on February 7, 2024, then we know the microOLED display size is reported as "the lit area totals 3660 px by 3200 px." 360 Labs' Mike Rowell wrote a post on March 19, 2024 saying, "Apple Vision Pro's screens are a whopping 3660 x 3200 pixels per eye. Although they haven't made any official claims as to the FOV of the headset, 3rd party developers claim that it looks to be around 100° horizontal. With each screen having 3,660 horizontal pixels, this would mean that a 180° immersive experience would need about 6,000 x 6,000 pixels per eye to saturate the display. Apple's own immersive experiences have been reported at being 4320x4320 per eye at 90fps and in HDR10." The reporting of Apple's immersive experiences was detailed by Mike Swanson, who announced a spatial video tool on March 7, 2024 that leverages the Apple's AVFoundation to properly encode video into the "multiview extensions of the HEVC codec, known as MV-HEVC" format. Swanson says in his post, "I receive multiple messages and files every day from people who are trying to find the limits of what the Apple Vision Pro is capable of playing. You can start with the 4320×4320 per-eye 90fps content that Apple is producing and go up from there. I've personally played up to “12K” (11520×5760) per eye 360-degree stereo video at 30fps." Another clue can be found in the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera that was announced on June 10, 2024, which says, "The sensor delivers 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye with pixel level synchronization and an incredible 16 stops of dynamic range, so cinematographers can shoot 90fps stereoscopic 3D immersive cinema content to a single file." Incidentally, Currents director Jake Oleson told me that he used Swanson's tool to create his immersive film after shooting it in 8k on the Canon EOS R5 Camera Body with Canon's Dual Fisheye lens.
Actor. Podcast host. Comedian – and no, we're not talking about Tabari. This man is also a father (which Tabari is not even close to ever being as of yet). He's Yannis Pappas – and he's the latest guest to grace the mic on the latest episode of A Tight 45. A man of many talents (and characters), there are plenty of places you've probably seen Yannis, even if you didn't know it. There's his 2014 Comedy Central Presents half hour special and his 2019 hours special Blowing the Light (available directly on his website and YouTube). He was also the host of NextVR's 2018-19 pre-pandemic virtual reality live stand-up series, Live In Gotham (44 episodes 2018-19), AOL's award winning original series, 2 Point Lead (a sports comedy show) ... In addition to serving as the co-host of MSG's sports fan show, The Bracket as well as ABC's Fusion Live. His 2016 album Let Me Be Yannis is available on iTunes and Spotify. He has also been part of the international Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, the New York Comedy Festival and is known for his immensely popular characters Mr. Panos and Maurica. He is also the co-host of the podcast Long Days with Yannis Pappas, which is available on YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts. On this episode (out on all major platforms on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021), the newfound friends come out the gates firing talking about a bunch of stuff at a rapid fire pace. (Seriously, we hope you can keep pace!) The episode ends, however, with a much more solemn tone as Tabari talks about a friend that is no longer with us. Check out this episode and others you may have missed at https://atight45.buzzsprout.com/or wherever you get your podcasts today! 5G speeds are being adopted more quickly every year. As I have mentioned before in this Industry 4.0 blog, 5G speeds will provide the backbone for automated factories and that is becoming more of a reality every day. Believe it or not, the discussion around 6G speeds is already beginning. It is estimated by 2025 that 48% of the US or 205 million users will adopt 5G devices. Much of the adoption of 5G speeds will depend upon when Apple releases an iPhone with a 5G chipset in them. Could it be this fall? Hard to know, but I would think it will be soon. Apple bought Intel's smartphone modem business in the fall of 2019 for 1 billion dollars. This gave Apple 17,000 wireless patents and intellectual property. As stated in a joint press release this was to give Apple the ability to design its 5G modem technology. In June 2020, they bought NextVr for $100 million. This gives them access to a company in the virtual reality space. NextVr primarily focuses on the sports and entertainment world. I know there is an overlap between the virtual reality and augmented reality world, which will benefit immensely from… Samsung is releasing what they believe 6G will bring to the table as far as speed and user applications. Probably the most impressive detail is 6G speeds are expected by 2028. This is only 3 years after half the US will adopt 5G. Does that sound a little aggressive? Regardless, here are the expected benefits of 6G. 1. Increased density6G speeds will allow 10X the connected devices per square mile. I've mentioned before that a huge benefit of 5G is the number of connected devices that can be handled in a crowded space. Think about trying to get a signal in a pre-COVID pro football game with 4G. Not happening. 6G will be an improvement over 5G's ability to handle density. 2. Reduced latencySamsung is estimating that latency, or delay, will be 100 microseconds. I'm struggling to find comparisons for that speed. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsecond (Wikipedia), a finger snap is 150,000 microseconds. That is 1/7 of a second. This is still 1500 times longer than the latency of 6G speeds. An enormous benefit will be in autonomous cars and AGV's in a manufacturing plant. There will be almost no delay. Sensors can send data in true real-time. 3. XR glasses, Digital Twins and hologramsForget augmented and virtual reality. The next frontier will be extended reality glasses. These will be immersive and allow you to see motion. Think about the Matrix. You can guide your cobot to pick items off of the warehouse shelf. Holograms will be realistic. Forget telemedicine, your fitness device can take an EKG and send it to the doctor. Then they can look at your body using a realistic hologram. Swallow some dye and your doctor can see how your organs are working. Voila! No need to visit the doctor's office. Businesses will enjoy this technology because it will allow a more accurate digital model or digital twin. You can model actual usage in full immersive accuracy from far away. Imagine a piece of equipment going down and you could direct a cobot to fix it by entering the control panel from halfway around the world. Red or blue pill? As always, it's an honor to serve you, and I hope this helps you and your organization get a little better today. http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1499224100 (Rate and Review Here) More show notes are https://americanlean.com/blog/5g-will-support-factory-automation-and-economic-impact-of-1-5-trillion-by-2023/ (here) https://americanlean.com/contact/ (Schedule a free 1/2 call) with Tom Reed.https://www.amazon.com/dp/1645162818 (Buy) the Lean Game Plan Follow me on https://twitter.com/dailyleancoach (Twitter@dailyleancoach)Join me on https://my.captivate.fm/www.linkedin.com/in/tomreedamericanlean...

Hey, good afternoon from Engadget! It's Tuesday, May 26th. I’m Kyle Sauerhoefer, and here’s what’s happening in the world of technology. Since 2009 a startup called NextVR has been developing proprietary cameras and striking deals to bring live events -- think sporting events, wrestling matches and concerts -- straight to the VR headset of your choice. It sounds like a potent cure for FOMO, and maybe it was for some people.

Uber looking to buy Grubhub. Facebook buying Giphy. Apple nabbing NextVR. Host Molly Wood speaks with Mark Lemley, who teaches antitrust and internet law at Stanford University, about whether regulators will take action against any of these deals. He says Facebook buying Giphy, for example, may not be any worse than its purchase of Instagram. But the combined weight of so many acquisitions could prompt regulators to wade in.

Apple Acquires NextVR, Rumours Of New iPads & AR Glasses & More Tech News The post Chris Voss Podcast – Apple Acquires NextVR, Rumours Of New iPads & AR Glasses & More Tech News appeared first on Chris Voss Official Website.
In this episode, Shawn and Ross look at how Big Tech is taking advantage of market volatility to swoop in and acquire companies that fill out their offerings. These include direct competitive response in the case of Facebook buying Giphy and Uber eyeing GrubHub, market expansion in the case of Microsoft buying Metaswitch, and farther-flung VR dreams in the case of Apple buying NextVR. Plus, we look at the competitive dynamics of the video meeting market among Zoom, Microsoft and Google in the context of office population. Finally, we end with a note about Huaweii's clever circumvention of the U.S. tech ban as it puts a sheen of new tech on last year's P30 smartphone.

Prediction Review for 2017 It's hard to believe that another year has gone by! With that it's time to see how we did with our 2017 predictions. This year's scorecard: Ara: 3/5 A very respectable 60% Braden: An awe inspiring 2/5. (.5 + .5 + 1) = Nailed it! Ara: DirecTV Now will announce more than 250K Subscribers by year's end We have no official number on how many subscribers there are to the satcaster's IPTV product and there are some missing pieces to the offering. I am betting that DirecTV will add a cloud based DVR and sign deals with local channels to really make this a service that you would make cutting the cord worthwhile. Well I am off to a great start! There were one million subscribers as of December 5th! And that with a service that doesn't have DVR. Networks will allow streaming of their live feeds without the need for a TV subscription This is the year the networks realize it's about eyeballs! It doesn't matter whether your viewers receive the signal over the air, through satellite/cable or via the Internet. It's about how many people watch your content. And add to the fact that streaming over IP means you can't skip commercials and it becomes a no brainer! I can't believe it hasn't already happened. So far the only network that I know of that does this is The CW. I guess the networks don't want to upset the cable and satellite companies. At some point with all the cord cutting that is going on this won't be an issue. I may have been a couple of years early on this. Apple will introduce a competitor to the Echo and Google Home It wouldn't be a prediction list from Ara without at least one mention of Apple on it. Apple already has all the pieces required for this type of product. Siri for voice, Homekit for automation, and the AppleTV for content. The only thing missing is the actual device. Look for that some time in 2017! Chalk up another prediction come true. Although it's not shipping, the Apple Airpod was introduced earlier this year and will be shipping soon! Look for a review when it arrives. Netflix will stream live sports Granted this is a long shot, but Netflix is looking for content and what better than live sports. This year twitter streamed live NFL games so why not Netflix? Then why not stream live network content and voila! Yet another IP based TV service. If I had only said Amazon Prime! At least I am batting 500. Virtual Reality will arrive thanks to live events This will be the year that you will be able to experience live events like a concert of sporting event from the comfort of your home. And you will have the best seat in the house!! Virtual reality has come a long way but who wants to watch a movie when the experience is marginally better. But watching a live concert or say the World Series from the best seat in the house. Well that's pretty cool. You would have a full 360 view of the show and venue. And if done right, they could use Dolby Atmos to give you 360 degree sound experience as well! I was worried about this one but there is a company called NextVR that uses headsets like Oculus, Playstation, Microsoft, and Google to put you right in the middle of the action of NFL, NBA, Concerts and more! If they get the NHL I may get one myself! Braden: Day and Date Movie Streaming It's going to happen this year. Either Sean Parker's ‘The Screening Room' will finally go live, or someone else will figure out a way to work with theater owners to make this a reality. Could be someone we've talked about like Fandango, or possibly even a big theater chain. It happens this year. I hope. I'd like to claim partial credit on this one. Just because Bright was a flop doesn't mean we didn't get a true, first-run blockbuster movie in streaming form on the day it was released. Will Smith has dropped some terrible movies (Wild Wild West, After Earth, need I go on...) so Bright is a legit, first-run “blockbuster.” Hopefully we get more in 2018. And hopefully they're actually worth watching. 80” Televisions for under $2000 Going to carry-forward yet again. I think I was just two years too early. Both OLED and 4K will push prices down for 1080p TVs. Wanting to capitalize on the desire for a larger screen, Manufacturers will push prices down for the big 1080p sets to get them flying off the shelves. So the price for a starter series 80” TV will drop to under $2000 at some point this year. Maybe Black Friday, maybe for another event, but it'll drop. Not sure if it's legit, but a site called Joe's AV has an 85” Samsung on sale right now for $1795 (Samsung 85inch Series 7 LED 4K Ultra HD - UN85JU7100FXZA). Phew. At least I didn't get blanked this year. It's the 2015 model, but that was the plan, the new stuff pushes down the price for the old stuff! Amazon or Netflix content on Traditional TV Either Amazon or Netflix will create and produce an original series, be it drama or sitcom, that will air on a traditional broadcast network using traditional weekly distribution. They already have a ton of customers, so they don't really need the extra advertising, but many of those customers still aren't tuning to Amazon or Netflix for original content. This will help them make that offering more tangible. Nope. Swung on and missed. Next Gen TV (ATSC 3.0) equipment available They've already proven ATSC 3.0 by broadcasting it live in 4K using the ATSC 3.0 standard. LG made the antenna and receiver used in that test. Since the FCC won't give broadcasters a second channel to use for the new format during the transition like it did with 1.0, it's going to be a hard cutover, so some means of introducing the new technology will be necessary. Everyone will need to have the new tuner before the switch flips, and that could take a couple years to fully roll out. Partial. On January 6, 2017, LG Electronics announced that their 2017 4K TVs sold in South Korea would include ATSC 3.0 tuners. But in the US, the FCC just finally officially approved 3.0 on Nov 16, so there just wasn't enough time between then and now to get the gear to market. Everyone must have been waiting for that final approval, otherwise this prediction was a lock. There are some pro level tuners available, but nothing consumer. Surround Sound from a Single Speaker Sure, we already have sound bars, but this is different. This is one speaker, mounted in your ceiling, that can aim sound in any direction, or all directions. There already relying on, and working to perfect, shifted and reflected sound in technologies like Atmos. Why not use a single source mounted where your ceiling light or ceiling fan used to be, heck maybe even build lights into it, and there you go. Could set the stage for 360 projection down the road. I knew this one was way out there, a sci-fi enabled prediction. Didn't happen this year. Oh well. There's always 2027.
On a cutting edge edition of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio — scintillating paranormal talk radio every Thursday 9-11pE with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we dive down the virtual reality rabbit hole with NextVR CEO David Cole, whose brand new program Paranormal Evidence immerses viewers in an investigation of wildly haunted locations, beginning with the Pennhurst Asylum. We talk with David at 10pE; at 9pE Joel and Eric review the week’s top paranormal news and peer intently through the veil. The line between paranormal reality and virtual reality just got very blurry. Paranormal Evidence is a brand new virtual reality investigation TV series exploring unexplained phenomena reported at wildly haunted locations, beginning with the notorious Pennhurst. The original program developed by NextVR immerses fans in the investigation as events unfold around them. The engineering team at NextVR designed and built a proprietary VR camera system to capture full spectrum footage in the pitch-dark environment, enabling the audience to see things imperceptible by even the investigators. A team of investigators, led by Jack Kassewitz who has years of investigative journalism and linguistics experience, selected Pennhurst Asylum for the premiere of Paranormal Evidence with one goal: to capture evidence of what is lurking in the dark. Known as one of the most haunted locations in North America, Pennhurst opened in 1908 to care for children with severe mental and physical disabilities. In the decades to follow, the isolated facility also housed society’s outcasts and criminals, became dangerously overcrowded, underfunded, and understaffed. After nearly a century of controversy and accusations of abuse and neglect, the institution was finally closed. Unexplained occurrences have been reported for years, including strange voices, slamming doors, shadowy figures
