The city is known for its welcoming LGBTQ+ community, with a gayborhood in the Ghazi neighborhood and a variety of gay-friendly establishments. English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and among healthcare professionals. Athens offers a vibrant arts and culture scene, with theaters, music venues, museums, and festivals. The city has a variety of outdoor theaters and concert venues, including the ancient theater of Epidaurus, known for its exceptional acoustics. The museums in Athens, such as the Acropolis Museum and the Benaki Museum, are top-notch. The city also has a good public transportation system, including metro, buses, trams, and taxis. Born in the ancient Roman town of Esslingen, Germany, given the Byzantine name of Stylianos belonging to his late grandfather, the family moved to the USA in the latter months of 1969, settling in the Philadelphia area, where his mother's family settled years before, and had established themselves in the Greek community of Upper Darby, a suburb of the city. As was the norm in the Greek community of the early 70's, the families steadfastly clung to traditions and the language, where Steve grew up speaking Greek as his first language, while enjoying the rich cultural background of his family and ancestors. Greek was the only language he spoke until entering grade school where the challenge of learning English in school turned into both a daunting and exciting task for a young child whose parents depended on his language skills at later stages of life. Steve spent most of his life living in the Philadelphia area then a career opportunity took him to Miami, where he spent 12 years in the tropical sun, enjoying the gentrification of the region in the mid-90s. Realizing his heart was always in Europe after numerous visits, he ventured into the process of successfully obtaining ancestral citizenship in Greece to initiate the dream of living in his continent of birth, yet the dream took many years to come to fruition. At the peak of the pandemic, and the realization that life is much too short, the dream to live and work in Europe became reality with the move to Greece in early January 2021. Ken Cook, president and co-founder of Environmental Working Group, is widely recognized as one of the environmental community's most prominent and effective critics of establishment agriculture and U.S. farm policy. On November 2, food policy authority Michael Pollan named Cook one of “the world's 7 most powerful foodies”, along with First Lady Michelle Obama, nutritionist Marion Nestle and The New York Times' columnist Mark Bittman. On November 19, The Times' Bittman listed EWG among 25 people and organizations for whom he was thankful as Thanksgiving approached. In its 2011 roster of Washington's top lobbyists, The Hill, the newspaper of Capitol Hill, said Cook “is at the forefront of challenges to corn ethanol and subsidies for Big Agriculture, upcoming hot-button issues as Congress tackles energy matters and starts work on a new farm bill.” Cook was voted the “Ultimate Green Game Changer” in 2009 by the readers of The Huffington Post. As Arianna Huffington put it, “The EWG is an environmental superhero with a full set of digital tools in its arsenal.” Cook is a principal architect of the landmark conservation provisions of the 1985 farm bill, which for the first time attempted to shift U.S. farm policy from a narrow focus on maximum crop production to conservation of land, water, wetlands and wildlife. The legislation was the most important environmental farm policy reform of recent years, affecting more than 400 million acres of privately owned - and publicly subsidized - farmland. EWG's online database listing every farm subsidy recipient in the nation and the amount of money each receives has generated thousands of stories about America's broken farm policy. A New York Times profile of Cook said the website helped “transform the [2002] farm bill into a question about equity and whether the country's wealthiest farmers should be paid to grow commodity crops while many smaller family farms receive nothing and are going out of business.” Cook and EWG played a similarly prominent role during the crafting of the 2008 farm bill. In the 1990s, EWG's research on pesticides was a major factor in the passage of the landmark pesticide reform law, the Food Quality Protection Act. EWG was among the first organizations to draw attention to the health threat posed by the weed-killer atrazine, conducting the first extensive tests for the chemical in tap water in 29 Midwestern cities. Cook has addressed food and agriculture policy in numerous interviews, including 60 Minutes, the CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, the Today Show, MSNBC, CNBC, FOX Business News, CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters, The Los Angeles Times and The San Francisco Chronicle. Cook testifies regularly before House and Senate committees, has briefed top Congressional staff and has met with senior Obama administration officials, including Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack and Environmental Protection Administration chief Lisa Jackson. Cook earned a B.A. in history, B.S. in agriculture and M.S. in soil science from the University of Missouri Columbia. He is a board member of The Organic Center and the Amazon Conservation Team. He is married to Deb Callahan and lives in northern California with their young son, Callahan. Dr. Cassandra Zentner is the Vice President of Technology and Sustainability at actnano, the global leader in PFAS-free nanocoatings used to protect circuit boards across industries. Actano was created after the CEO, while working at a different company, saw factory workers getting sick from handling traditional coatings. Actnano's technology is currently protecting many of the world's foremost consumer electronic brands, safeguarding millions of vehicles, and defending numerous industrial applications against harsh electrical and environmental conditions. Cassandra leads actnano's implementation of innovative protective materials. While driving customer-focused technical initiatives, she also leads the company's sustainability efforts and commitment to protecting human health and the environment. She brings her scientific background—a PhD in Chemistry from MIT—to drive actnano's mission to bring safer chemical alternatives to the electronics industry. In this episode, we discuss: ● PFAS—what they are and why they present a huge problem ● The meaning of “safer chemicals” ● The importance of prevention versus mitigation Key Takeaways: ● Takeaway 1: Innovating Out of a Broken System. When actnano founder Taymur Ahmad noticed the harmful impact of PFAS in protective coatings, he didn't just stand by. He saw a broken system as a call to action. A puzzle to be solved. By developing PFAS-free nano-coating he stepped up as a true innovator, showing us that discovering a broken system is the first step towards creating a solution. It's a reminder that the world benefits immensely from changemakers like Taymur, who not only dream up safer alternatives but also pave the way for others to adopt these groundbreaking solutions in their operations. ● Takeaway 2: The Invisible Threats Among Us. We're naturally drawn to the big, obvious problems. The proverbial elephant in a room. Yet, it's often what we can't see that poses the greater danger. PFAS, a prevalent yet invisible threat found in countless everyday items—from electronics to personal care products—carries serious health risks, including certain cancers, fertility issues, and developmental delays in children. This hidden danger reminds us that sometimes the most significant threats to our well-being lurk out of sight, challenging us to look beyond the obvious. ● Takeaway 3: Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind. Then there are the enormous issues we choose to ignore, like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an immense span of waterborne waste twice the size of Texas, floating in the middle of the Pacific without much attention. This "plastic continent" is a stark example of "out of sight, out of mind," yet its impact on our health and environment is profound. Microplastics, including those containing PFAS, break away from this mass, infiltrating the seafood we eat and carrying with them a host of health risks. It's a clear signal that just because we can't see a problem, or a problem feels far from home, doesn't mean it's any less real or harmful. This unseen danger serves as a critical wake-up call to the interconnectedness of our global ecosystem and the hidden impacts on our health. Amidst the growing concerns over nutritional safety, there is a pressing need for increased awareness about making informed choices and living in a healthy environment. But how can we guarantee the safety of our food, water, and consumer products? Today, I'm speaking with Ken Cook, the President and co-founder of the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG). We delve into the organization's pioneering role in digital innovation. EWG's user-friendly, science-driven tools empower American families to minimize exposure to potential hazards in food, water, cosmetics, and household products. Recognized as a prominent environmental critic, Ken sheds light on the influence of lobbying on environmental policy and the urgent need to rebuild trust in regulatory bodies. Our discussion covers diverse topics, from harmful chemicals in personal care products to the divergent regulatory approaches between Europe and the US. Ken also addresses agricultural subsidies, the farm bill, and the pivotal role of consumer choices in driving positive industry changes. The episode concludes by highlighting EWG's Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists, advocating conscious consumer choices, and recognizing the significant impact of young people in shaping a positive future. Additionally, practical guidance is provided for informed shopping decisions, encouraging using EWG's valuable resources. Ken Cook is the president and co-founder of Environmental Working Group (EWG), whose mission is to empower individuals with breakthrough research to make informed choices and live a healthy life in a healthy environment. EWG lives its mission by empowering American families with easy-to-use, data-driven tools to help reduce their exposure to potentially harmful ingredients in everyday products like foods, personal care products, cosmetics, and cleaning products. Ken testifies regularly before House and Senate committees, and for the past 20 years has briefed top White House officials and every U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and EPA Administrator on EWG's research and policy positions. In the 1990s, EWG's research was a major factor in the passage of the landmark pesticide reform law, the Food Quality Protection Act. In this episode, we discuss: ● Why products containing harmful ingredients are sold in retail outlets across the USA ● The changing landscape of environmental policy in the USA ● The power of the Internet to create transparency and empower consumer choice Key Takeaways: ● Investing in Progress, Not Stagnation - I wonder about the mountains of money poured into lobbying since 1996 to keep industries unregulated, clinging to a harmful status quo. Imagine, for a moment, if those funds were instead channeled into innovating for a better future. Where we direct our resources is a choice between stagnation and evolution. It's high time we bravely choose to evolve, not just for our sake but for the generations to come, shaping a legacy that's woven together with pride and progress. ● Toxic Products – A Call for Responsibility - It's wild to me that a lot of products on store shelves contain known toxic ingredients. Known carcinogens as ingredients. The burden of screening products for safety should not be placed on the consumer, it should be placed on the government setting regulations that make toxic-free products a bare minimum before something can be sold. And the accountability should be placed on business leaders, ensuring consumer safety is standard practice. ● California Leading the Charge in US Product Safety - California's recent legislative victories in banning harmful chemicals in cosmetics are a beacon of hope and a call to action. With Governor Newsom's approval of legislation banning 26 toxic chemicals in 2023, following the landmark Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act of 2020, California is trailblazing personal care product safety. When the federal government lags, states like California step up. As the largest economy in the USA, California's laws can create a domino effect. If a company has to innovate safer products for California, those safer products will probably be sold in all states. But let's be clear: we've only scratched the surface. When you compare California's legislation to the European Union's ban on nearly 2,000 chemicals in personal care products, it's evident that our journey towards safer products is just beginning. Subsidizing food has been a practice in the US government for a very long time; we've subsidized sugar since 1790 and wheat, corn, and soy since 1933. What's the difference between tactics and strategies? In business, we often hear about tactics and strategies. But how do we know about their differences or maybe use them interchangeably? Tactics are specific actions that we take to achieve a goal, while strategies are the long-term plans that we put in place to achieve those goals. As business owners, we face challenges and struggles in so many different ways. We keep striving and finding ways just to go on. Despite the challenges, we make a difference and apply our own tactics to reach our goals. Ken Cook has successfully grown his company from a one-man operation to a small agency employing a variety of talented workers that continually contribute to its success. In 2018, The Prepared Group was voted the #1 fastest growing company in their region. The Prepared Group was created, shifting the focus from tactical agency services to a comprehensive marketing strategy consulting process. In this week's episode of Charged Up Studio, Ken shares his knowledge about what lessons he learned early on in his journey as a small business owner. He talks about working with other business owners and implementing new initiatives to help them succeed. https://thepreparedgroup.com/ 503-300-5999 ken@thepreparedgroup.com Learn more about your ad choices. Ken Cook was a principal architect of landmark provisions of the 1985 farm bill that for the first time shifted U.S. farm policy from a narrow focus on maximum crop production to conservation of land, water, wetlands, and wildlife. The legislation was widely regarded as the most important environmental farm policy reform in decades. He went on to co-found the Environmental Working Group, which created an online database of federal farm subsidy payments and recipients that has generated thousands of stories about the nation's broken farm policies. This week, Ken talks with our host Ron Kroese about the first versions of the farm subsidy payment database as well as his role in Washington, D.C. throughout the years. Ken and the Environmental Working Group played a similarly prominent role during the crafting of the 2008 and 2014 farm bills, fighting successfully to add conservation requirements on farms that benefit from federally subsidized crop insurance. Ken continues to serve as president of the Environmental Working Group and is widely recognized as one of the environmental community's most prominent and influential critics of industrial agriculture, U.S. food and farm policy, and the nation's broken approach to protecting families and children from toxic substances. Under his leadership, the Environmental Working Group has pioneered the use of digital technologies to empower American families with easy-to-use, data-driven tools to help reduce their exposure to potentially harmful ingredients in foods, drinking water, cosmetics, and other household products. Ken is the founding chairman and board member of Food Policy Action, an organization dedicated to promoting food policy that is protective of the environment, farmers, and consumers through education and the publication of the National Food Policy Scorecard. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks with the co-owner of https://thepreparedgroup.com/ (The Prepared Group), Ken Cook. The Prepared Group licenses intellectual property around marketing strategies to other marketing agencies. The reality is that most agencies aren't profitable and they work tireless hours every month for only a few thousand in revenue. They need better strategies to scale and become profitable. As a business owner, you have to both morally and legally make sure your profit margins are healthy. Agencies that want to make an impact and get visibility tend to price their offerings very low. Ken shares that when his group used a high price model and offered higher-ticket services, they were able to tangibly give back to both their team and their community. He explains that because they had healthy profit margins, they were able to work with nonprofits pro bono. Ken offers some candid advice; you can't make an impact if you're broke. You have to have the means financially to make an actual impact. If you want to see change in the world, you have to have the wealth to make those changes. Josh and Ken explore how to start increasing your profit margins. First of all, don't start over and try to find another product. You can grow in many ways, he shares. The number one way to increase your revenue? Adjust your pricing, first and foremost. Ken shares his calculations; you can lose 30% of your customers but increase your profit by 50%, based on the scenario Ken explores. In such a model, you are earning higher ticket prices for your offerings. The reality is that you've probably underpriced what you offer to begin with. That's why this is always step one. Next, Ken says your product should be something you yourself use as a business. In other words, eat your own dog food. If it really works, you won't feel the need to change it, so naturally you'd use your own product. Change what you're selling fundamentally to align with your ideal prospect. You need to frame your value proposition to meet what they're looking for. It's all about how you relay the solution you offer – and who you talk to. As Ken puts it, a prescription without a diagnosis is malpractice. You can't tell your prospects what the solution is before you've even diagnosed the problem. With a clear, repeatable, and proven diagnosis and a clear solution that only you offer, you'll attract prospects who believe in their investment fully. Want to learn more? Glyphosate also depletes glutathione, our master antioxidant and a cornerstone of our biology, and it dramatically impacts our sulfur, methylation, and detoxification pathways that have many essential roles for our health. And not only is glyphosate harming human health and the health of our future generations, it's also destroying our ecosystems. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Stephanie Seneff, Ken Cook, and Dr. Zach Bush about why it's important to be aware of the effects of glyphosate and make choices that reduce our exposure as much as possible.Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has a bachelor's degree from MIT in Biology with a minor in Food and Nutrition Science, and a master's degree, an engineer's degree, and a PhD degree, all from MIT, in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Her recent interests have focused on the role of toxic chemicals and micronutrient deficiencies in health and disease, with a special emphasis on the pervasive herbicide, glyphosate, and the mineral, sulfur. Ken Cook is president and co-founder of the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. He is widely recognized as one of the environmental community's most prominent and influential critics of industrial agriculture and the nation's broken approach to protecting families and children from toxic substances. Dr. Zach Bush is a physician specializing in internal medicine, endocrinology, and hospice care. He is an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease, and food systems. Dr. Bush founded Seraphic Group and the non-profit Farmer's Footprint to develop root-cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including topics such as the role of soil and water ecosystems in human genomics, immunity, and gut-brain health.
