This week, Kate is joined by Dr. Kara Davey, Senior Clinical Psychologist, trauma specialist, and adult ADHD expert. Dr. Davey shares both personal and professional insights into how unresolved trauma can amplify ADHD symptoms, especially in women, and why understanding this connection is vital for healing and long-term wellbeing.Dr. Davey discusses her own ADHD diagnosis following a stillbirth, which deeply shaped her clinical perspective. Together, we explore how trauma, especially “small t” traumas like chronic stress or emotional invalidation, can go unrecognised but significantly impact mental health and functioning.Throughout the episode, Dr. Davey emphasises the need for trauma-informed, ADHD-aware care and the benefits of therapies like EMDR and somatic work in processing trauma. What You'll Learn in This Episode:✨ How trauma (both “big T” and “small t”) can worsen ADHD symptoms in women✨ The emotional toll of undiagnosed ADHD and its link to complex PTSD (cPTSD)✨ Delayed ADHD diagnosis in women, often triggered by grief or life stressors✨ The generational impact of undiagnosed ADHD in families✨ Why validating emotional and relational trauma is key for ADHD support✨ How therapies like EMDR and somatic work can help process trauma✨ The importance of ADHD-aware, trauma-informed therapy✨ Why remote therapy offers accessible, ADHD-friendly mental health careTimestamps:

In my last episode, Dr. Awais Aftab and I explored the controversial nature of Borderline Personality Disorder as a diagnosis. One of the reasons I wanted to discuss BPD is that it opens the door for digging into psychiatric diagnosis itself, and that's part of what I want to discuss more today. What is our purpose in using diagnosis? How does it benefit us as clinicians and the clients who receive that label?Getting more clear about the constellation of things we may be referring to when we talk about diagnosis, in general, is a crucial prerequisite for using specific diagnoses wisely, especially for using highly controversial and stigmatized diagnoses like BPD.Even if you never use diagnosis, the language and concepts of psychiatric diagnoses are out there. It shapes our professional discourse, past and present, and increasingly impacts our clients' thinking when they arrive in our offices. Diagnosis is complex, multifactorial, and profoundly impacted by context, and we must contend with it.Listen to the full episode to hear:Why it is vital that we understand diagnoses and their value–or lack thereof–as constructs and constructs as toolsHow holding diagnosis as a lens, not a label, allows for more flexibility and curiosityThe heavy lifting we expect from diagnostic constructs applied across multiple contextsWhy it's not always necessary to share how you're applying a diagnostic construct to your therapeutic relationship with a clientWhy we have to learn to uncouple “difficult” from “bad” with our clientsLearn more about Riva Stoudt:Into the Woods CounselingThe Kiln SchoolInstagram: @atherapistcantsaythatResources:Management of Countertransference with Borderline Patients, Glen Gabbard

Why you've got to check out today's episode:Discover how to secure more sales without the fear of being too pushy, aggressive, or salesyFind out how you can use your personality style to increase your sales and attract the right clientsLearn how to stop the “bright shiny object” syndrome and start closing sales through conversationsResources/Links:Want to find out what your personality style is to attract the right clients for you? Click here: https://www.nancyzare.com/alikeability-assessment/Summary:Do you keep on trying different marketing tactics but struggle to secure a stable stream of sales?Marketing doesn't automatically equate to sales. For you to successfully grow your business, it is important to generate visibility and credibility. But for you to close sales, connecting with prospects through conversations is crucial.Using psychology, Nance Zare, Ph.D. teaches caring professionals how to get clients without being salesy.Marketing isn't enough if you don't know how to close sales. Sit in and listen to Nance as she shares how to authentically secure more clients without wasting a penny on your marketing. She also talks about how you can use LinkedIn to help grow your business through connecting and conversing.Check out these episode highlights:02:17 - Nancy's ideal client: It is that smart, caring professional who is invested in his or her occupation to have that advanced degree perhaps a certification or license.02:43 - The problem she helps solve: The problem I solve is that these people are shy about self-promotion. They don't want to be pushy and aggressive, as you suggested. And at the same time, they need to make a good living. 03:39 - The symptoms of the problem: As I mentioned a moment ago, they have some sort of credential that enables them to give their service. They believe that no one taught them in the school or the training program they attended how to market, run a business or perhaps sell.05:26 - Clients' common mistakes before consulting Nancy: I believe that they suffer from what's called the "bright shiny object" syndrome. In other words, they are lured by marketing messages that say, "You can 10x your income. You can make 10k a month by just following our techniques."06:52 - Nancy's Valuable Free Action (VFA): So the tip has to do with reading LinkedIn profiles. You know, we look at somebody's profile usually when we don't know them, maybe they're on our calendar. But what are we looking at?08:42 - Nancy's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Want to find out what your personality style is to attract the right clients for you? Click here: https://www.nancyzare.com/alikeability-assessment/09:23 - Q: Who am I as an individual? A: I'm very heart-centered and spiritually based. And I think that the people who work with me likewise gravitate to somebody who is also heart-centered and cares about people.Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode:“Marketing fills the sales funnel, as you know. It should generate visibility and even credibility. But in order to close sales, you're going to have to have a conversation with that prospect.” - Nancy Zare

When you think about your week, what are the most important things you focus on to move your business forward?Maybe you want to get posts up on social media so you can grow your audience. Maybe you want to tweak your lead magnet. Maybe you're so busy with client work and you want to hire a freelancer so you can outsource some of the work. Those aren't bad things to do. Posting on social media is a great marketing strategy. Working on your lead magnet so people happily hand over their emails builds your list. Using freelancers that you up-charge the client for so you can free up your time is a great idea. But the question is, are those the right things for you to do at this moment in your business?Maybe not.If you're working too many hours for too little money, I can pretty much guarantee you that at least 50% of the things that you do each week are probably not going to help you make any more money or work any less.Imagine if you could identify 50% of the things you were doing that aren't helping you grow your business and you could just stop doing them. Host Jeremy C. Park talks with cityCURRENT partner, Harlan Schafer, CEO and Chief Visionary Officer of Human Capital Concepts, who highlights his company and the power of partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO). During the interview, Harlan talks about how they help businesses simplify being an employer by sharing the responsibility of having employees, which means that HCC handles benefit plan administration, HR issues, payroll, compliance, 401k administration and the technology to support it all. HCC is one of the only 15% of PEOs that have committed the extra effort, reporting, and expense to meet the Certified Professional Employer Organization (CPEO) standards via the IRS. Harlan talks about these benefits to companies and nonprofits, along with some of the important HR trends and topics, including the hiring and retention of employees, remote workforces, and COVID work policies. He also highlights their philanthropic efforts and how his team gives back to support the communities in which they live, work and play.Professional Employer Organizations (PEO) are a rapidly growing industry.Currently over 173,000 SMB with more than 4 million employees use a PEO; this is 15% of all employers with 10-99 employeesHCC helps small businesses simplify being an employerWe do this by sharing with employers the responsibility of having employees. The owners and managers retain managing and motiving their staff. HCC takes on the rest. This means that HCC handles benefit plan administration, HR issues, payroll, compliance, 401k administration and the technology to support all this.HCC is proud to be only one of the 15% of PEO's that have committed the extra effort, reporting, and expense to meet the Certified Professional Employer Organization (CPEO) standards via the IRSMost companies have employees. With this comes the legal/compliance and human responsibility that most are not prepared for. Furthermore, most are not large enough to have an internal staff to focus in this area. That is where HCC comes in.We allow owners to focus on the parts of the business that only they can do.Additionally, Covid has added rules and legislation that has really challenged business owners.Change is constant and quick- today the top three topics concerning businesses are hiring and retention, remote workforces and Covid work policies. All areas we help our clients navigate. Our biggest competitive weapon is our staff and our delivery model. We understand that how we treat our employees is how they will treat our customers. Each client has a team assigned to them from each discipline. No call centers or 800 numbers. Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Jeff Hallam, Vice President of Business Development at Human Capital Concepts, who discusses how the company helps small businesses and nonprofits simply being an employer by helping them offload the administrative and regulatory work and responsibility that goes along with having a team of employees. During the interview, Jeff talks about being a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), how they have been helping their clients over the past year with all of the challenges and new regulations that have come during the pandemic, including PPP loans, PPP forgiveness, FFCRA, ERTC and the newer ARPA. Jeff also highlights their philanthropic efforts and some of the many ways the company and his team give back to support nonprofits and the community.HCC helps small businesses simplify being an employer We do this by helping them offload the administrative and regulatory work/responsibility that goes along with having a team of employeesLots of components = onboarding, online benefit enrollment, payroll, taxes, benefit plan administration, 401k administration, HR issues, compliance guidance & assistance, etc.Term for what we do is Professional Employer Organization (PEO)We've committed the extra effort, reporting, and expense to meet the Certified Professional Employer Organization (CPEO) standards via the IRSMost owners or CEO's want to focus on growth vs government-mandated rules and regulations = we help them stay focused by taking on these distractionsFor many small businesses = this is a logical part of their organization to outsource, just like accounting and legal. Going this route leads organizations to faster growth and better recruiting/retention of talent. We've been able to significantly help our clients over the past year with all of the challenges and new regulations that have been by-products of the pandemic. Instead of them having to figure things out on their own (PPP loans, PPP forgiveness, FFCRA, ERTC, and the newer ARPA) we've done the legwork and have provided them with timely guidance on what these things mean and how they impact their companies. Our biggest competitive differentiator (relative to larger, national providers) is how we match clients with 1:1 team members in each area of expertise -- this avoids call centers, 800 numbers, and lots of red tape for clients and their employees. People really like working with people they know and who get to know them.We focus a good amount on giving back to the community in a variety of ways: Employee-led donation committee that selects annual targets for HCC company donationsHCC matches us to $100/year/employee for charitable donations of their choosingWe provide up to 16 paid hours/year/employee for them to volunteer their time to organizations of their choosingWe discount our fees to nonprofit clients, as well as to start-up clientsLearn more:Website: https://hcchr.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hcchr/Twitter: https://twitter.com/HCCHR3LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/human-capital-concepts/
