This is Empires of the Future, conversations to understand culture and encourage the Church in a time of change. “What do we do with Club Sports?” Over the last twenty years, club sports have come to replace many other activities that used to take place in the recreational life of a young person. In this podcast, we consider the article “Why We Pulled Our Kids from Club Sports” by Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra and Ross Douma for The Gospel Coalition. What's the difference between club sports, rec. leagues, and Kiwanis Baseball for that matter? What is the value of kids' sports programs? How does all this fit into Christian faithfulness? All these questions and more are considered on this episode. https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/pulled-kids-club-sports/ "The Empires of the future will be Empires of the Mind." - Winston Churchill

In the studio for this episode are some of the competitors for the Missouri State University Handball Team. The women's team captured another national title this past week and the men finished 3rd in the nation, while they received runner-up in the combined category. We celebrated, yes, but we did not just talk about handball, but also the value of club sports and being a part of something in college and how it helps graduation rates and the physical and mental health of students. Being involved and socially interacting on a team can be a great retention variable for college students. Joining us tonight representing Missouri State Handball: Christian Madsen, Trey Safford, and Bri Still. My guests do a great job of keeping their eye on the ball and staying focused on and off the court!
Going to take a look at where we are in this country as parents who push their kids into super competitive sports before they are even in high school. What pressure does this put on the kids and are we burning them out before they can even be successful, in the same light CrossFit has a bunch of young SuperStars and the first one has had to take a leave from the sport to get right. Is this just the beginning or are we looking at a trend that is about to begin?

Does your kid love sports? Whether they're sliding into home base or scoring a touchdown, sports can be an incredible way for kids to stay healthy, make friends, and learn the value of teamwork. For some kids, sports can become a way of life, granting them a chance to travel or even bringing in college scholarship money. With so much to offer, it seems like sports are the perfect activity to sign kids up for.But it turns out that kids' sports aren't always the character-building extracurriculars we think they are. The youth sports industry is valued at over nineteen billion dollars, and that money is coming from parents who feel obligated to pay for everything from equipment to sports tourism. Severe injuries from playing too much can destroy our kids' long term health, and the status-driven nature of these sports takes a toll on our families and our culture as a whole! It's time to take a critical look at our kids' sports teams, and decide if they're doing more harm than good. This week, we're joined by Linda Flanagan, author of Take Back the Game: How Money and Mania are Ruining Kids Sports. Linda is a freelance journalist, researcher, former cross country coach and mom to an athlete herself! Her work has been featured in The Atlantic and Runner's World, and she's a regular contributor to NPR's education site MindShift. Today, Linda is warning us about the dark side of kids' sports, and what we can do to help our young athletes stay happy and healthy despite it all.In the episode, Linda and I are covering the damaging effects sports can have on families, why the pressure to win is harming our kids, and how we can help teens create a healthier connection to the sport they love.

Chrissi Rawak joined Higher Ed Athletics to talk about leading the Blue Hens and begins the conversation with an institutional profile. Rawak had several different roles in college athletics and shares what made her decide to pursue an AD position. Rawak talks about the decision to create a chief of staff position at Delaware and advice for what other athletic directors might want to consider if they are thinking about creating a chief of staff role after doing some research of her own. The conversation then turns to the role of talent management and professional development of her staff and why investing in them is so critical to the success of the department. Rawak knew it was incredibly important to integrate with the university and explains how and why the athletic department decided to create an internship program with 12-16 interns each semester that goes towards their degree. I then ask Chrissi what it takes to be a successful fundraiser and how someone without fundraising experience, or nervous to make the ask, can do to improve (the worst thing that can happen is they say "No"). Keeping with the tactical advice in this episode, I asked Rawak her philosophy on hiring and evaluating head coaches and she shares her thoughts on internal promotions and why she understands coaches moving for other positions is sometimes okay. The conversation ends with a discussion on the athletic department being responsible for oversight of recreation and club sports at Delaware, and whether that might be a trend in the future at other institutions. 0:20 Institutional Profile 4:42 Deciding to Become an AD 9:52 Chief of Staff Positions in Athletics 17:40 Talent Management in College Athletics 22:54 Creating a Robust Internship Program 29:45 Growing to Love the Role of Fundraising 39:15 Head Coach Hire & Evaluation Strategies 47:22 Athletic Departments Supervising Recreation & Club Sports
