Hidden within the ridges of East Tennessee, Oak Ridge—the "Secret City"—stands as a monumental site of American ingenuity and ethical weight, where a city was built overnight to change the course of history and usher the world into the Atomic Age. A monumental triumph of American grit over nature, the Hoover Dam stands as a concrete titan that tamed the Colorado River, sparking the rise of the modern West and serving as an enduring symbol of the nation's ability to engineer the impossible during its darkest hours. The Bennington Museum stands as a vital sanctuary for the American rural identity, preserving the rustic, soulful legacy of Grandma Moses—a woman who proved it's never too late to become a national icon by painting the simple, enduring beauty of the American dream. As a unique guardian of the American story, Colma stands as a sprawling, hallowed necropolis where the "silent" population outnumbers the living a thousand to one, preserving the ancestral heritage and diverse history of the West in a landscape dedicated entirely to the legacy of those who built it.

A whimsical tribute to an enduring piece of the American mythos, the OZ Museum serves as the emerald heart of the Midwest, preserving the ruby-slippered legacy of a story that taught a nation there truly is no place like home.
Colma occupies a singular place in the American narrative—a vast and reverent city of the dead where those laid to rest outnumber the living by a thousand to one. In this landscape devoted entirely to remembrance, the rich and varied history of the West is preserved through the legacies of those who came before.

In this episode of the Unscaled Travel Show, we explore Colma, California, a unique town known as the City of the Dead or the City of Souls. With a living population of less than 2,000 and over 1.6 million deceased residents, Colma's history is intertwined with the expansion of San Francisco, which relocated its cemeteries to make room for development.____________________________________S03 Ep115____________________________________Connect with us on social media: Instagram: @unscaledtravelshowTwitter: @fullmetaltravlrFacebook: @fullmetaltravelerWebsite: https://www.unscaledtravelshow.com/
This is Part 2 of my interview with author Terry Hamburg, author of "Land of the Dead, How the West Changed Death in America". In this episode Terry tells us how the four main cemeteries dealt with evicting the dead by the 1940s. I assure you, it's a fascinating story and it will give you historical reference for many parts of San Francisco as well as Colma's necropolis history. This episode is an interview with author Terry Hamburg, who wrote a very interesting book on all things dying, death, and burial in San Francisco history. We cover the earliest history of Colma and specifically discuss one cemetery, Cypress Lawn. This subject matter might not be for everyone, but please know I approach the discussion about the history of death and burials in San Francisco with respect and genuine curiosity. I think you'll find it fascinating. monkeyblocksf@gmail.com (email me directly)monkeyblocksf.buzzsprout.com (for transcripts and cited sources)buymeacoffee.com/monkeyblocksf (support the podcast)twitter.com/monkeyblocksf (follow me)facebook.com/MonkeyBlockSF (follow me)

(RV1960)

Between 1895 and 1945 San Francisco not only outlawed burial within city limits, but within the entire county. Following that, a fast-growing western port town hungry for land rallied for the removal of the thirteen major cemeteries. Meanwhile, to the south a quiet farming community, less than two square miles was slowly transforming into something extraordinary, America's first true necropolis with more than 1.5 million burials. Did you know there are actually no cemeteries in San Francisco? It's because even back at the turn of the 20th century, in 1900, city leaders realized they were running out of room for its living residents. So the dead were relocated to the city of Colma. Matt Pitman takes a walk through the graveyard and some pretty remarkable stories, in this Halloween edition of Bay Current. In this special episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we are honored to welcome Senator Scott Wiener of the California State Senate. Sen. Scott represents District 11, which covers the scope of San Francisco and its southern areas, as well as Broadmoor, Colma and Daly City. In his work as a government official, Sen. Scott has advocated for solutions to address housing problems, mental health issues and food security. He champions the LGBTQ+ and civil rights. Among these advocacies, he also campaigns for animal rights and welfare. This year, Sen. Scott reintroduces the Senate Bill 879, also known as the Prohibiting Extraneous Testing (PET) Act. The bill will put an end to activities that involve testing household animals such as cats and dogs to determine the effectiveness of chemical-induced products. Some of these products include pesticides, food additives, and medications. Sen. Scott also explains how San Francisco has been partnering with the humane society to address animal issues in their community. By phasing out pet stores that sell pets and closing down puppy mills, the government encourages people to adopt rescues from shelters. Providing homes for animals in need of care is one of the priorities in San Francisco. Sen. Scott also encourages communities to collaborate with local advocacy organizations to campaign for certain legislations that need to be implemented in their locality. He points out that people's engagements matter during a bill's legislation process and a certain bill would have more possibility of being passed once people express their support for it. “When people call their representatives and register their support or opposition to a particular piece of legislation, that has an impact.” - Sen. Scott Wiener Tune in to find out how you can express support or opposition to your local government when it comes to the policies involving animal rights and welfare! Otra cosa no podía hacer.
