This mix is a collage of bass experimentation and music that can flirt with what usually works in a club, 3h of music glued in 1h. Brazil-born, Berlin-based alys(alys)alys explores the (un)common ground between experimental, club, and soundcloud music; crafting a dynamic approach to her own productions and eclectic DJ sets. Since 2018, she has performed in venues and parties such as Berlin Atonal, CTM Festival, Venice Biennale, Herrensauna, as well as in some of the notorious Brazilian parties such as Mamba Negra. Limerick-based electronic duo 40hurtz and rapper Hazey Haze are gearing up to release one of the year's most anticipated projects, a Berghain-inspired record, this Thursday. Known for their experimental approach, the collaboration fuses the bass-heavy energy of Limerick's dubstep and grime scenes with the industrial, techno-infused sounds of Berlin's Berghain. Inspired by a surprise booking at Berlin's legendary Berghain, 40hurtz and rapper Hazey Haze dove into the studio to create a fresh batch of tracks, gearing up for their performance at the CTM Festival in February 2024. The result is an album that fuses 40hurtz's hard-edged, groove-laced UK-influenced production with Hazey Haze's gritty, hard-hitting lyricism. 40hurtz, known for his innovative and uncompromising production, has crafted a collection of tracks that push boundaries, delving into the darker, more atmospheric side of electronic music while preserving a distinctly Irish edge. Teaming up with Hazey Haze added the final touch, infusing the project with sharp, witty lyricism and a vernacular rooted in Irish culture. Together, they deliver a sound that is both bold and unmistakably tied to the Emerald Isle. 40hurtz said “A product of a crazy gig booking, and not wanting to bring old music to Berghain. Myself and Haze Locked ourselves away for a month and a half and crafted some songs worthy of the legendary venue. So, here is this bunch of bass heavy , distorted vocals , gritty imagery and hopefully danceable grooves!” We premiere “The Maze” over on our Soundcloud now. 40hurtz ------------------------- SC: @ck-66228354 IG: https://soundcloud.com/eoin-b Four Four Magazine

An Emotional Encyclopedia of War

SEMI SILENT

An Emotional Encyclopedia of War is a radio art project launched in the summer of 2022 that investigates the transformation that comes with war via the locus of emotional emergency. Trying to get a grip on the new emotional states she'd undergone, Anna Kravets still questions the imperceptibility of war experience. Having realized how discordant it is with the life beyond its borders, she tries to invent frameworks that would pass under the framing barriers of mass media coverage. In her auto-ethnographic radio piece, Anna describes her feelings of living during war, integrating them in a palette of experiences which belong to others, strangers, foreigners. Called out in a time of war, those experiences are featured in her piece together with her desperate attempts of reflection and composing sound in a post-invasion paralysis.   The project was born during SONIC FUTURE RESIDENCIES program of SEMI SILENT, made possible together with Q-O2 and ASCR in Brussels, and co-financed by AFCN. In 2023, it traveled to CTM festival as part of its Radio Lab with Deutschlandfunk Kultur (winner of the 2022 edition), ORF musikprotokoll im steirischer herbst festival, Ö1 Kunstradio, The Wire magazine, and Goethe Institut. A new iteration of Emergency Rehearsal took place during Sonic Narratives festival in Timișoara (Romania) in 2023, and the Week of Sound in Brussels and Charleroi in 2024.   An Emotional Encyclopedia of War was premiered (in German) in February 2024 at Deutschlandradio Klangkunst.   Photo: Udo Siegfriedt, 2023   Anna Kravets is a radio and performance artist, journalist and podcast producer. In her work, she uses direct and recorded speech, stages recorded interactions, makes sonic experiments with materials, spaces and soundscape, exploring the experience of the self with its limits and possibilities. Anna studied cultural studies in Kyiv and anthropology in Marseille. In 2017-2022, Anna presented the Art Of Work Talk Show on Radio Ukraine International and Cashmere Radio. In 2017-2018, Anna also produced and organized an experimental media platform called Radio International during the Kyiv Biennial and the Warsaw Under Construction Festival. Anna is based in Kyiv, Ukraine.   Voices, contributors, and participants: Aditi Srivastava, Alessandra Prado Soler, Alice Hui-Sheng Chang, Amin Behmanesh, Annu Koetter, Carmelo Ianuzzo, Caroline Profanter, Constanze Aka, Diana Duta, Dimitra Kousteridou, Erika Sirola, Golo Föllmer, Greg Kieser, Hanna Sauer, Joachim Glaude, Julia Eckhardt, Juliette Escudé, Kai-Uwe Reinhold, Laetitia Defendini, Mamoru Watanabe, Michel Ivor, Nir Jacob, Sabri Meddeb, Tanya Ringer, Virgile Loiseau, Wouter Hillaert, and Wynona Ringer. The voices were collected in different places from 2022 onward as part of Emergency Rehearsal series of performative interactions, that became a tool for mutual translation and acknowledgement of complicated experience.   Production: SEMI SILENT, Q-O2, ACSR, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, CTM Festival, Goethe-Institut, and ORF.

In 2022 she has regularly presented BBC 6 Music live coverage of festivals at Glastonbury and Cardiff. At the end of the summer she curated the 6 Music stage for London festival ‘All Points East'. Her DJ style is a synthesis of Drexciyan and Underground Resistance-inspired selections, intercut with a variety of forward thinking UK techno such as Bola and Lego Feet. Forever evolving a fully live hardware show, AFRODEUTSCHE debuted it at the opening of CTM Festival at Berghain in February 2020, integrating classical piano and hardware along with visuals. https://linktr.ee/afrodeutscheCaro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Anastasia Kristensen's greatest gift is to weave an electrifying sonic thread through her DJ Sets. She gathers sounds from a vast array of styles, enthusiastically researches off-grid electronics and blends them together through an adventurous, if not infectious, mixing technique. Dance oriented Avantgarde - that is exactly her edge. Her BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix turned so many heads that it got nominated for the Best Essential Mix of 2022 and is a testament to her ability to select and synthesize.
To become the selector that she is today, Anastasia embraced non - conformity and fortitude throughout her life. Non - conformity, that means a musical curiosity that explores the less conventional places in electronic music, but it also means continuously aiming for her audience to let go on the dancefloor. At present she hosts regular all-nighters at Den Anden Side, a new underground venue in her hometown Copenhagen and holds a residency at Mainstream, the city's most reputable LGBTQ party. Both platforms stand for her versatility and community orientation and are key contributors to her experience of playing foggy high quality basements and festival stages dexterously and with devotion. I's a rare quality to perform with such an ease in these divergent ambiances. Even more so, to provide such an engaging variety of sounds there and to captivate the audiences in an instant. Whoever attends one of Kristensen's kaleidoscopic sets should be ready to get lost and experience the unpredictable. Having played the experimental UNSOUND Festival, and clubs like FOLD, BLITZ and Elysia in Basel, the Danish DJ convinced many knowledgeable crowds and gained praise for it. This is no different for her rare live performances - like the opening of the CTM Festival in 2018. To care for a community and to further build it up is of significant importance for the artist. Her 2020 efforts to curate the compilation “Rewire and Acquire” and bring 18 producers together in service of the organization “Equality Now”, show that she walks the talk intrepidly.
Being a producer, too, the energy of dance - oriented Avantgarde is detectable in her releases and remixes. Following the debut “Maxima” (2019) on the cutting edge outlet Houndstooth, the EP “Ascetic” on Warps sub- label Arcola exhibits a futuristic genre blend between electro, IDM and spooky techno. Houndstooth is also the home for her latest release “Volshebno” that captures mesmerizing dancefloor moments. Fittingly, “Volshebno” stands for “magic” in Anastasia's mother tongue, Russian. 2023 will be a continuation of her mission to represent musical curiosity and community, as Anastasia will host listening sessions in Copenhagen. Community Members will showcase music they love and tell the connected stories around them. Besides that, she will hold a residency at the highly reputable NTS Radio. By embodying authentic, tasteful curation and selection, by connecting individuals in communities they feel belonging to, Anastasia Kristensen will no doubt further transcend her inspiring artistic footprint into the electronic realm. Lush Lata's Wild City mix moves from thumping kicks-backed Sarod meanderings of 'Maharaj Trio and Nickodemus' to the booming hip-hop beat of 'Go Again' by A-STAR to cuts by Overomono, SBTRKT, Romare, Breaka and Fred Again alongside works by homegrown talents like Oceantied, Potter and Stain, while also slipping in Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Swarnalatha and Karsh Kale. With 40 tracks in less than an hour, the New Delhi selector's mixing moves quickly just like her trajectory as an artist. Starting as a member of the femme collective Coven Code and a staple figure of boxout.fm, Lush Lata has built her work over an embrace for Bollywood and the grooves most Indian kids grow up around while connecting it to her deep love for hip-hop and bass. The individual voice recently led her to be featured at Berlin's CTM Festival this year with a talk, DJ-ing workshop and a performance at the Panorama Bar of the dance music's most iconic club The Berghain. "I am way more open to new sounds and musical experiences than before. Also, they love what's going on in India right now," says Lush Lata, recounting her time in Berlin which she also does by ending her mix with Shy FX and T-Power's 'Shake Ur Body (feat. D.I.)', a track that she describes as "the tune that took my night at Berghain to another level when I heard it on the dancefloor in DJ Voilet's set at CTM festival." Porous Borders: Experimental Music in the Southern Hemisphere

Kok Siew-Wai is a vocalist, festival director, and video artist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For the past 10 years, Siew-Wai has been the organiser of KLEX, an independent Kuala Lumpur experimental film and music festival. As a musician, Siew-Wai frequently performs as a vocalist in the free improv scene in KL and she's performed and curated film programs all over the world. Siew-Wai is a fantastic performer who brings a really strong presence to group she plays with. I've been lucky to see her play many times on my trips to KL. I last saw Siew-Wai perform at KLEX 2019 as a trio with Burkhard Beins on percussion and Yuen-Chee Wai on guitar, and you can find a link to a video of that performance in the show notes. Siew-Wai went to university in Buffalo, New York, and by chance found herself studying with Tony Conrad. Buffalo's arts community and Conrad's teaching had a significant influence on Siew-Wai's work, so that's where we start our conversation. Quick reminder to share, rate, review, and subscribe if you're enjoying the show. Also to check out Sonic Vortex, which is a big compilation of noise and experimental music from South-East Asia released by the Mindblasting label. Few nicknames in dance music have been as rightfully earned as DJ Storm's "First Lady of Drum & Bass." It all began in early 90s London, when she discovered the weird and wonderful world of UK rave. By the end of the decade, Storm and her friend Kemistry had become the quiet force behind Goldie’s Metalheadz empire. As part of the 2018 CTM Festival in Berlin, she sat down for an inspiring conversation about the joys of the mix and the trials and tribulations of maintaining a DJing career.

Milo - Grimecore ────────────────────────────────── Milo aka milo schlimmfingr is curating the monthly mixes on bassmusik.ch. He develops conceptual dj sets mostly under different aliases. «Grimecore» was a set played on February 2017 for an experimental & noise night (w/ Fezaya, Purpura and Musikgesellschaft) at the collective-run clubspace at Wasserwerkstr.89a in Zurich. «Grimecore» is based on a deep research about queer identities and the role of LGBT music producers and the collective form of releasing music. Some of the featured artist in this set are dealing with postcolonial topics, questioning roles of identity and the economical, neoliberal and technological influences on our society. You can hear an assemblage of spoken word pieces, bullet shots, scarps of weird noise, industrial and vaporous sonics. A fictional drift into a dystopian future. photo credits: «The Great Disappointment», Performance by NON Collective at CTM Festival 2017. But many small circles of individuals constantly make their own personal contribution for a sustainable and wide-ranged bass driven music. there is a lot of talented musicians to be heard and of which you can be inspired.
