00:00 - IntroductionTyler's got rib issues. Yes, of course it's from pickleball. Yes, the injury was earned during a match against an 80-year-old lady. Would we all love to hear her account of the story? Very much. This leads us into a brief sharing session about embarrassing recreational injuries. We also talk about what catches our gaze 08:50 - Getting to know Chris and TrevorAnyway… Today we welcome Chris Patton and Trevor Owen from Rogers-O'Brien Construction. Chris and Trevor give us a run-down of their construction history (some BIM coordination, some electrical work, and recently some begging and a little attempted beard construction).Trevor talks about his love of innovation and how that has driven his work at Hilty and now at Rogers-O'Brien. Then he and Chris share with us about 15:50 - Reality capture and the ROCCChris leads us into the topic we were looking forward to discussing today. He shares that several years ago he and others at R-O saw that reality capture would become increasingly important in construction. They assessed the various strategy and personnel adjustments that would need to be made in order to capitalize on this tool. The ROCC is the RO Command Center, a training approach that would ensure that up-and-coming field directors, superintendents, and other senior builders would be better prepared to be better builders across all of their projects. Eddie asks for details, and Chris discusses the idea of bringing platform data and observational data together in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of project execution. Autonomous reality capture provides much of the data that is channeled into the ROCCTrevor shares about the reality-capture logistics as well as some of the benefits that come with this approach. The ability to access data from a comfortable venue–an office, trailer, or truck–means less of the physical strain that often leads people to consider career changes or to retire early. Tyler asks about the role AI may have in this process, and Chris explains that their vision for AI is to expedite data collection and access rather than to replace human supervisors and decision-makers. 27:23 - Loom and AITyler mentions the benefits of thoughtful training. He shares about how Loom and similar tools can exploit AI in a way that makes things smoother and easier for various team members. Trevor ties this training efficiency to the labor shortage issues, discussing how increased efficiency helps maximize productivity. Eddie raises the likelihood that AI will be taking our jobs. He points out that even much of our creative work is going to be done very differently. Chris shares some counterpoints, laying out his speculations about how things will shift, including AI augmentation rather than replacement. Eddie discusses the ongoing rotation of new jobs that enable automated equipment to reliably do the jobs that people were doing yesterday. Tyler connects this to a recent visit to Walmart.Chris discusses the futuristic processes related to drone fleets. Trevor builds on this with some insights about 360 camera walks and other platform-specific data-analysis insights. 48:48 - Megaphone MessagesChris says not be scared of these changes. Don't be intimidated by them. Embrace them. For people coming out of school, he says this: There are many different routes for getting into the construction industry. It's a dynamic industry with lots of opportunity. If you like dynamic, collaborative, problem-solving environments, consider education. Trevor has these words: Be curious, be gritty, be patient. The Word of God would have been extinguished thousands of years ago if not for parents passing faith down to their children. “Her children arise and call her blessed…” (Proverbs 31:28) is the legacy of a mother who has put Christ in the center of her heart and home, and who has led her children to fall in love with Him. Casey Hilty has written Her Children Arise and she is on the show sharing stories of biblical moms who remind us that the home is and has always been a mission field for mothers to live out the gospel of Jesus Christ. Even in the throes of sleepless nights, toddler tantrums, and the challenging teen years, we can find our joy and purpose through guiding our children to see the heart of God. The secret is that it's less about family devotions and more about our devotion to Jesus. Connect with Casey: https://www.caseyhilty.com/her-children-arise

Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees

So many of us adoptees feel so many painful feelings. Suppressing them leads to explosions later on. Numbing them through alcohol and drugs often leads to more pain. Fighting them never leads to peace. So what does? Listen as transracial adoptee Abby sheds her light on finding peace.Abby was adopted from Bogotá at the age of two months and grew up in a small suburb of New York City. She received her bachelor of science in human biology from the State University of New York at Albany and her master of science in medical anthropology from University College London. Abby enjoys hiking, dancing, writing, traveling, exploring nature, and being with beloved friends and family. She lives in Toronto with her life partner and their two children. Since 2012, Abby has been reunited with her familia in Colombia. She is the founder of Decoding Originshttps://twitter.com/AbbyForeroHiltyhttps://www.facebook.com/abby.forerohiltyDecoding Our Origins: The Lived Experiences of Colombian Adoptees is written by seventeen authors who were born in Colombia and adopted internationally. Their individual stories illustrate different aspects of the transracial adoption experience. The traumatic loss of their mothers, culture and identities; racism; and severe abuse are amongst the tough topics addressed frankly and head on. However, these first-hand accounts also highlight the indomitable tenacity and perseverance embodied by the authors as they negotiate their way through childhood, parenthood, search, reunion, and the nail-biting wait for DNA test results. Intimate and honest, the powerful and moving stories in the words of the transracial adoptees themselves result in a unified voice that reminds us to never, ever give up hope.http://decodingorigins.com/Here's a link to the book https://decodingorigins.com/en/welcome/#bookHere's a link to the podcast I mention https://dramyjohnson.com/2023/04/ep246-noticing-the-story-that-says-everything-would-be-better-if-this-wasnt-happening/

Widespread sexual harassment draws discipline, resignations in Wisconsin police department

The story was reported by Wisconsin Watch's Phoebe Petrovic in collaboration with Sheboygan Press reporter Maya Hilty. In late 2022, Petrovic and Hilty obtained more than 200 pages from the three sexual harassment probes from 2021, which resulted in discipline and counseling for 12 male and female officers. The internal investigations started with complaints from two female officers that semi-nude photos had been taken and passed around the department without their consent. A third probe was launched after female trainees reported inappropriate behavior by a male training officer. A review of the records showed the department failed to use best practices in carrying out the series of internal investigations and that female officers were, in some ways, more harshly punished than their male colleagues. Mo asks Linda Klein: Tell us a business development story that you are particularly proud of. Many years ago Linda did a favor for an accountant without sending him a bill. Five years later, the accountant called mainly to thank her and ask if she could help a friend of his. The new client was entering a mature market with lots of competition, but after Linda helped him start and grow his business, within nine months his company was the largest client for Linda's firm. Linda was able to make a difference in two people's lives. For the client, she helped him start a business that changed him and his family's lives, and for the accountant, she impacted him deeply enough for it to come back to her five years later. Linda has developed a business development program by volunteering. Linda doesn't have a lot of free time, but for her, volunteering and being helpful is fun and enjoyable so the business development benefits come naturally. If you're curious and read the news about your clients, you will find opportunities to reach out and be helpful. Being involved in your community gives you scale in meeting new people. Find what you like and get involved in that community. There are an infinite number of opportunities to get involved and meet like-minded people.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: Tell us a development or growth story that you're really particularly proud of. Jonathan tells the story of a complex corporate partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Hilty, and how they've worked together closely after building a relationship over the years. Each year, the two organizations began to work more closely together and started developing new innovative approaches to achieving their mutual goals. There's not only funding, but it's making both parties better. They are achieving their goals as well inside a full strategic partnership which is much more exciting than just a transactional donor relationship. Jonathan's role was in building trust with the head of the foundation. Without that relationship, the partnership probably wouldn't exist. It also taught Jonathan a lot about building trust and being direct.   Mo asks Henning Streubel: Tell us a business development story that you are particularly proud of. Henning's story begins with a rough start where a client CEO read an unflattering internal email about himself that he was never meant to see. Henning went to apologize in person and ended up having a great conversation that turned into an offer to have a second lunch in the future. During the second conversation the client began to open up about the challenges he had been experiencing, and Henning realized that he had gained this CEOs trust. Henning engaged some of his colleagues to help with the challenges the CEO was facing and this created the basis for a larger transformative project with the company. Today, Henning and the CEO are good friends. Henning is most proud about being able to overcome his discomfort with the initial situation and doing the right thing. Growth and comfort can't coexist. The skills needed to develop a relationship aren't innate. You can start right away to develop your skills, and it is possible to add value to someone else's career even when they have more years of experience than you. Henning is always thinking about how to take his professional relationships into a more personal realm because that's where he can deliver the most value. The challenge is in connecting with people with different personalities and experiences and then helping his team do the same thing.     Mentioned in this Episode: GrowBIGPlaybook.com lklein@bakerdonelson.com linkedin.com/in/lindakleinlaw habitat.org linkedin.com/in/jonathanreckford Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World by Jonathan Reckford linkedin.com/in/henning-streubel-phd on.bcg.com/henning - Use the envelope icon on this page to get in touch with Henning directly

Jonathan Reckford shares his incredible experiences at the helm of Habitat for Humanity and how he's helping to change the world by creating strategic partnerships with other organizations, and how it all starts with building relationships first. Find out how the CEO of Habitat for Humanity, one of the biggest non-profit organizations in the world, can still make time each month to work on his Protomoi List and why aligning a potential partner's desire for impact with your goals is a great foundation to build a valuable long-term relationship on.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: When did you realize you wanted to grow something big and make an impact? Jonathan had a lot of great role models growing up, with his grandmother being one of the first women in Congress. She would always ask Jonathan what he was going to do to be useful, a mindset that he eventually adopted and grew into. Jonathan assumed he would follow her footsteps into politics and law, but quickly realized after college that law wasn't what he wanted to do. He later talked his way into a job at Goldman Sachs, received a grant and moved to South Korea to work for the Seoul Olympic committee, and ended up working with the rowing team as their coach for a few years. That experience allowed him to reorient his perspective and after returning home, Jonathan came back with a mission. He went into business school and spent the next 15 years helping large organizations grow. After that time in the private sector, Jonathan went to India on short-term mission trips. Seeing the challenges and suffering in rural India touched his heart and he realized the power of small interventions in dire situations. Jonathan began focusing on helping churches grow and contributing to the mission of alleviating international poverty, ultimately culminating in working for Habitat for Humanity nearly 17 years ago. You can't always connect the dots going forward, but when you look back you see how everything got you to where you are now. Jonathan's experiences in his career lend themselves perfectly to his current role as the leader of Habitat for Humanity. Work on the ‘who' before the ‘what'. Build your character and skills instead of looking for some grand career plan. No matter what you do in your 20s, consider it continuing your education. As long as you're learning and aligned, you will eventually find your vocation where you have an impact that lines up with your passion and skills. Habitat for Humanity is thinking big for the future and is focused on making markets work more effectively to create just societies where really everyone can access safe, decent, affordable housing. Really bold leaders are ones that reframe everything. If you have the right mission for the problem you're trying to solve, you'll gain the power you need to get there. If you're focused on gaining power, that's ultimately going to be self-defeating. Start with crafting a story around why what you're doing is making the world a better place and get clarity on your true purpose.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: What's your personal definition of growth? Ultimately, it's all about impact, but in order to make an impact you need fuel. Creating complex partnerships is very aligned with good development practices, which is valuable for Jonathan because growth at Habitat for Humanity means having conversations around fundraising. When he made the mindset switch to solving someone's problem, raising money became much easier and simpler. It's not about pressuring, or trying to get somebody to do something they don't want to do. It's about really trying to understand what people are trying to accomplish or the impact they want to have, and then looking for a fit and where there is one, finding ways you can help them have that impact in a really joyful way. Before a big meeting, you have to do the research. Jonathan will have a brief on the person's biographical information, passion, and overall strategic goals so that he can create alignment in the potential partnership. Creating win/wins is the goal and when you can do that, growth becomes easy. Negotiation is usually won or lost based on preparation and framing, not on the actual tactics of the conversation. After the research, the first step of the meeting is creating a point of connection and establishing the relationship. The goal of the first meeting is to come away with clear next steps, not to close the deal.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: What's your favorite science, step, or story from GrowBIG Training or the Snowball System? Jonathan's first favorite is the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument. He uses it all the time in talking with potential partners and tailoring the conversation to how they process information and think. Wrapping your data into a story is a great way to hit on more of the four ways people think, but also make your data more memorable at the same time. Jonathan's second favorite is simply discipline with the Protomoi List. Every month, Jonathan and his team review his list and look at how they are adding value to those relationships. The takeaway was the discipline and rigor of being very intentional about your most important relationships. Jonathan makes sure that there is time booked into his calendar to make connections, either physical or digital, with the most important relationships in his life. Sending a note to someone has more weight to it when they know you're busy.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: Tell us a development or growth story that you're really particularly proud of. Jonathan's role was in building trust with the head of the foundation. Without that relationship, the partnership probably wouldn't exist. It also taught Jonathan a lot about building trust and being direct.   Mo asks Jonathan Reckford: You get to magically record a video and send it back to your younger self with some advice. What do you say? Jonathan spent most of his youth thinking about what he wanted to do instead of who he wanted to be. He would tell his younger self to focus on the ‘who' before the ‘what' first. If you never fail, it's likely you're not going big enough. Hope is built in the community. Volunteering gives you a sense of the community and how you can bring the virtues of kindness and love into the world. Following your passion is incomplete. You need to search for the intersection between what you're passionate about and where your skills, ability, and talent lie. Jonathan tells the story of Doris, and how he grew up in a poor neighborhood in North Carolina and how his life completely changed after his mom qualified to buy a Habitat house in Optimist Park. Doris is the first person to grow up in a Habitat for Humanity house and to serve on the board as well. The story perfectly encapsulates the mission and purpose of Habitat for Humanity and how giving people a platform and foundation for a stable, healthy life can impact their community and society as a whole.     Mentioned in this Episode: GrowBIGPlaybook.com habitat.org linkedin.com/in/jonathanreckford Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World by Jonathan Reckford

For full show notes and photos: https://www.allthroughalens.com   We talk to Jon Hilty (@amphetadreamer on IG) because we were wrong about Autochromes! There's also some history about the View-Master, and we take a good look at two books of early crime scene photos. There's also Tiffen (@tiffen.sinclair on IG), zine reviews and some other fun along the way. Jon Hilty: DIY Autochromes In our last episode, we talked about autochrome color photos, basically saying that it couldn't be done. And with that, we got a bunch of folks messaging us, saying that we should talk to Jonathan Tod Hilty who had done it. IG: @amphetadreamer https://www.jonhilty.com/ A guide to making autochromes: https://www.jonhilty.com/autochromeguide It's a bit older, but here are some more pictures of the autochromes he's made: https://www.jonhilty.com/autochromegallery Here are some examples of the Lippmann plates: https://www.jonhilty.com/lippmanngallery Here are a few of his latest:   Short History of the View-Master The View-Master was introduced in April of 1939 at the New York Worlds Fair. This was also where RCA introduced television, Dupont introduced Nylon, and Einstein gave a speech about cosmic rays. What fairgoers witnessed was a futuristic improvement upon the stereocards of old. Using a stereoscope (which every antique store is legally required to sell), the grandparents of these spectators could look at 3D renderings of individual photographs, taken with special stereo cameras. Stereo photos pre-dated the Civil War, and so by 1939, they were old hat. What View-Master provided was an exciting update.  Round cardboard circles (which they called “reels”), held 14 16mm Kodachrome transparencies, which made seven pairs of photos – one for each eye. When looked at through a View-Master, they would be rendered in 3D. And with the flick of the lever, the reel would advance to the next 3D photo.  Here's a bunch of ads:   Murder vs. Death: Early 1900s Crime Scene Photos Back in April, we did an episode called Mugshots and Memorials (episode 41 if you were wondering). In the main feature, we talked about Alphonse Bertillon, the French police photographer responsible for the creation of mugshots. Bertillon, an exacting fellow, noted all sorts of things about the human face. He believed that things like ear size or arm length might determine someone's criminal potentiality. But oddly enough, we're not here to talk about Bertillon and his crime scene photographs. Not directly, anyway. A while back, we picked up two books on crime scene photos in hopes of making some larger piece with them.  The first, Murder in the City, a collection of glass plates from New York City in the 1910s and 20s, is very much in the vein of Bertillon – it's almost classy. The other, called Death Scenes, is a book of crime scene photos from 1940s LA. It's very candid, very matter-of-fact. Though the subjects are dead bodies, the way they are photographed is nearly the opposite of Bertillon – at least as far as unintentional artfulness went. It might seem a little obvious that photos of murder victims would be potentially unnerving and upsetting. But we weren't really prepared to deal with the photos in one of these two books. We're not sharing many photos from either book, but here are some photos about the God's Eye View Tripod setup: But here are some of Eugene de Salignac's photos:   Zine Reviews Future Condos by Jesse Rinyu – @jrinyu on IG   Toy Golf by Garon Kiesel (@grain_or_die on IG) PATREON Thank you to everyone who supports us!
