This week, we turn the spotlight on Dennis Miller, one of Weekend Update's most iconic and polarizing figures. Joining host jD and regular contributor Bill Kenney is Deremy Dove (Pop Culture 5 Podcast), making his case for why Miller deserves enshrinement in the SNL Hall of Fame. From his sardonic delivery to his cultural relevance in the late '80s and early '90s, Dennis Miller helped reshape what Weekend Update could be—and arguably saved it during a chaotic SNL transition period. Whether you loved his razor-sharp wit or found his obscure references head-scratching, there's no denying his impact on SNL's legacy.

Raised in New Jersey and New York, Rick Overton comes from a musical family. His father, Hal Overton, was Thelonious Monk's big band arranger as well as a music teacher at the Juilliard Institute. His mother, Nancy Overton aka Anne Swain Overton, sang in personal appearances as a member of The Chordettes, the girl group most famous for their singles “Lollipop” and “Mr. Sandman”. Rick has dabbled in the music industry himself as he plays the harmonica occasionally with local blues bands. Rick began his stand-up career while in high school as one half of the comedy team “Overton & Sullivan” but eventually went solo as he broke in at the New York Improvisation in the early 1970s. As a 40 year comedy vet, Rick Overton has starred in numerous HBO and Showtime specials and has had countless TV stand up appearances. He played The Drake on “Seinfeld” and Pam's Dad on “The Office.” He currently recurs on Adult Swim's “Children Hospital,” ABC's “Last Man Standing,” TNT's “Leverage” and recently guest starred on “The League,” “The Middle,” “The Kroll Show,” and “Newsreaders.” Rick has also guested on classic TV series like “Lost,” “E.R.,” “Mad About You” and “Married With Children.” On the big screen, he has worked with A-list directors like Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, Harold Ramis, Jay Roach, and Steven Soderberg, with roles in films like “Bad Teacher,” “The Informant,” “Dinner for Schmucks,” “Cloverfield,” “Groundhog Day,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Willow.” He also has an Emmy Award for writing on HBO's “Dennis Miller Live.” Rick is currently a semi-regular contributor to the Huffington Post and hosts a popular podcast called “Overview” that is available on iTunes.
George McFly's A Match Made in Space, from “Back to the Future”… Hank Moody's God Hates Us All,” from “Californication”… Dr. Frederick Frankenstein's How I Did It, from “Young Frankenstein”… Some of our best-loved movies and television shows feature books written by one of the lead characters. In many cases, the publication of those “books” becomes a central plot point or a running gag. (Think Handbook for the Recently Deceased, from “Beetlejuice.”) In other cases, those books leap from the screen and onto our bookshelves—IRL, as the kids like to say. That's the case with Look Out for the Little Guy, the in-movie memoir by Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, as seen on screen in the Marvel Studios blockbuster, “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.” The book was published by Hyperion Avenue in September and became an immediate New York Times best-seller, but here's a news flash: it wasn't really written by Scott Lang, the “Everyman Avenger” played in the movie by actor Paul Rudd. And no, it wasn't really written by Paul Rudd, whose face graces the front cover of the book in stores and online, and as it appears as a prop in the movie. In fact, the book was really written by our guest Rob Kutner, a veteran comedy writer who has collected five Emmys, a Peabody and a Grammy writing for such shows as “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” on Comedy Central, and “Conan,” on TBS. Rob's other television writing credits include “Teen Titans Go,” “Angry Birds: Summer Madness” and “Dennis Miller Live,” and he has also written material for the Oscars, Emmys, and MTV Movie Awards broadcasts, as well as for two White House Correspondents Dinners. He is also the author of Apocalypse How: Turn the End-Times into the Best of Times! and the just-published Snot Goblins and Other Tasteless Tales, with illustrations by David DeGrand. Join us as Rob shares what it was like to channel the voice of a fictional character to craft a page-turning memoir of an ex-con turned world-saving superhero, and to be tasked with the caretaking of the life and legacy of one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe. Set the snark phasers to stun -- Dennis Miller is in the house. A Pittsburgh lad, Miller was a smart standup comic, full of obscure (yet perfect) pop culture references when Lorne Michaels spotted him and offered him Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update anchor chair. He followed that with an Emmy-winning HBO show, radio talk shows, several best-selling books, and the occasional standup gig. Find extended cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Miller? Dennis Miller's breakout standup special came in 1988, while he was still on SNL. Called the "Off White Album" it holds up as one of the most quotable (at least by us) bit of snarky standup ever set to tape.https://youtu.be/N5xmmybtEDg While Dennis Miller became famous at the Weekend Update anchor desk, his best work was his HBO show (Dennis Miller Live) which opened each week featuring a Miller "rant" (which led to a series of books based on the concept). Here is Dennis ranting away in 1996. https://youtu.be/uhHiPaJB1_0 While Dennis Miller's sharp turn into conservative politics cost him some fans, he still has plenty left judging by this clip from his most recent standup special -- which is vintage Miller, full of razor sharp observations about the foibles of pop culture. https://youtu.be/ejrxhNC7jRU

I can't say enough nice things about Jeff Cesario. Jeff cut his teeth as a comedian during the comedy boom, and quickly turned his genius into being a writer and producer for The Larry Sanders show and Dennis Miller Live! Had an absolute blast talking to him about his career, comedy, and whatever the fuck is going on in the world today. Enjoy!!
Our first guest got his start starring with “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone in the cult-classic films, “Cannibal: The Musical”, “Orgazmo” and “BASEketball”. He's been in a ton of films such as “Galaxy Quest”, and “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.” His latest work coming out in 2021 is Guillermo Del Toro's newest thriller, “Nightmare Alley”, with Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett. Ladies and gentlemen, my very good buddy, the very talented Dian Bachar! We are so excited to have our next guest is Emmy Winner, Rick Overton. Rick is known for being the Head Writer on the Dennis Miller Live (1994) show on HBO. He has over 186 acting credits. #BestChristmasMovies #AskAnthony #Comedy #RickOverton #DianBachar #podcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedannymcdermottshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedannymcdermottshow/support

In the late 1970s Jeff Cesario was positioned to be one of the most in demand wedding band conga players in Wisconsin and some parts of Minnesota too. So why did he trade all that in and move to LA to pursue a career in comedy? Here, he tells that story. Since then, Jeff has been an actor, comedian, producer and writer, who has written and produced for Dennis Miller Live and The Larry Sanders Show. He has appeared on Adam Carolla, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Comedy Central Presents among other shows. Cesario was a part of two Emmy wins with Dennis Miller Live. He’s a real comedy success story, in his longevity and in his ease both behind the camera and in front of it. Jeff’s new standup album, What Was I Thinking, is out now and available in all the places you find albums. And his podcast Play With Pain with Chet Waterhouse is also available in all the podcast places. We spoke recently about the “power of insulation” (working out your craft inside of a small scene), how he approaches his standup act like a big band chart, the double edged sword of having a lot of experience today, the intense value of commitment, and how his life in music helped prepare him for comedy. www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.third-story.com https://www.jeffcesario.com/

With apologies to Dennis Miller Live’s theme music, we decided to counter-program last night’s debate with the issues that are really on the mind of the American Electorate. Sam, John, myself, Scottie, Luc, Robert Chief, and the elusive Andrew Cieslak discussed Hawks’ training camp battles, what to make of the World Cup so far, and a […]
Husband and wife Mike Gandolfi (GILMORE GIRLS, DENNIS MILLER LIVE, ROSEANNE) and Stephanie Storey (OIL AND MARBLE, THE WRITERS ROOM) join Mike and Chad to talk about their trip to Iceland and how fantastic the country is. We get into travel, Reykjavík, comparative literature, trying new foods, sharks, and how underwhelming Mike felt the Northern Lights are. A legend and a mentor to me it's beyond an honor to have the great Rick Overton on Inappropriate Earl. Sadly half way through this podcast he got a text with word of the passing of Gary Shandling so it's a bit awkward in that few minutes but Rick was AWESOME. Rob Kutner was my fellow writer and officemate at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for six and a half years. Before that prison sentence he wrote for Dennis Miller Live, and in 2009 he left TDS to board the unsinkable Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien! Unfortunately, that show sunk. Fortunately, Rob retained his writing job at Conan on TBS and has been working on their monologue team ever since. He wrote a couple of things on his own that you should read - his book, "Apocalypse How," (@ApocalypseHow) and his Kindle Single, "The Future According to Me". Both also make great gifts. Okay, good gifts.
