Ciao. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von fritz-kola. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers.  His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts,  was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution.  It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own.  I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. Send us a Text Message.MEMENTOOur Nolan Void Season continues with the first of our second pairing MEMENTO (2000). Many of you might suspect we would try writing these show notes in reverse, but, as that'd be too meta for us, we'll leave that to some other aspiring writer with memory problems we know.  Speaking of self-referential memory problems, Memento was actually the film that couldn't find distribution that Steven Soderberg claimed could be the bellwether of the death of the 90's indie cinema wave (see our erroneous show notes for FOLLOWING, Season 12, Episode 1).Listen past the awesome intro song for a surprise guest giving the plot synopsis this week, dogs barking not on command, and, to the eagle-eared listener, the return of the squeaky chair. Sir Nolan upon reflection stated there was a greater leap between his first feature Following and Memento than any between project. He had to trust another behind the camera (Wally Pfister, who'd shoot this and the next six Nolan films and win an Academy Award for INCEPTION) and had union rules and budgeted shooting schedules (losing some days when relocated from Canada to the States). Eventual Dame Emma Thomas would not be the executive producer as she was working at a different company. Memento also would star professional actors, a stellar lineup perhaps thanks to the early interest of Brad Pitt in the role of the Leonard instead played by the amazing Guy Pearce and costarring two actors hot off the success of the MATRIX: Carrie-Anne Moss and Joey Pants.Written concurrently with his younger brother (no “Sir”) Jonathan Nolan who'd develop his premise into a short story “Memento Mori” published in Esquire, the movie Memento follows an amnesiac and heavily tattooed protagonist Leonard (the former attribute part of but latter absent from the short story) as he pursues seeking revenge on his wife's mysterious killer, having himself somehow contracted a condition similar to Sammy Jenkins, a man who allegedly retain all of his memories up to a specific moment of trauma but afterwards could form no new memories. But is there more similarities between Jenkins and Leonard than his memory triggered by the tattoo “Remember Sammy Jenkins” allows? To unravel this story told backwards and to find a deeper understanding as its paired with next week's TENET, cohosts Ken and Thomas are again joined by the provisional host Ryan, who also recorded the intro/outro music. “How would I describe myself? Fuck you. You can describe me.” Fair enough. The Oscar-nominated director of 1988's essential documentary “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” before she became a NYU professor famous for drinking vodka on the rocks during class, Shanghai-born filmmaker Christine Choy is a character so incandescent that she's every bit as powerful in front of the camera as she is behind it — a fact that “The Exiles” seizes upon from the moment it starts. In their debut feature film, Ben Klein and Violet Columbus follow their former professor Christine as she tracks down three exiled dissidents from the Tiananmen Square massacre to help her find closure on an abandoned film she began shooting in 1989. "The Exiles" premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary. In today's episode, Ben and Violet reflect on being mentored by Christine Choy (3:10), pitching the film premise to Christine (6:21), getting the film off the ground (10:30), replicating Christine's archival footage with modern cinematography (15:58), building the interview setup in an empty movie theater (18:12), persuading Steven Soderberg to be an Executive Producer (22:12), deciding when to screen the film (28:50), and winning the Grand Jury Prize at a virtual Sundance (32:15).

Larry Clarke is a writer, director and actor whom you have almost certainly seen in one of the many, many roles he has played in mainstream studio tv and films from "Law and Order" to Steven Soderberg's "The Laundromat." His story is interesting, in part, because he stopped drinking about 5 years before he actually discovered the world of 12 step meetings, but it was really in the rooms of recovery that he found a kind of stability that ultimately led to his successful Hollywood career. We've known each other for years but have never really sat down to talk so this light, rollicking conversation covers a lot of ground and feels like a good palate cleanser for the Thanksgiving feast

The first feature from Wendell B. Harris Jr. (Chameleon Street) won the grand jury prize at Sundance in 1990. He has yet to be given the opportunity to make a follow-up. In this epic interview Harris shares the lessons gleaned from a life inside and outside of Hollywood, from his meetings with legends like Orson Welles and Chester Himes, to the project he has been working on since “Chameleon Street”, a documentary called “Yeshua vs. Frankenstein In 3D/G-Speak”. How is the world wrong about Wendell B. Harris, Jr.? From Andras Jones: I knew when I watched “Chameleon Street” that its writer, director and star was an important artist but after talking with him for over 7 hours (cut down to the three and half hours for this episode) it's clear to me that Wendell B. Harris Jr is as vital as ever, and sitting on several scripts and projects that remain ahead of their time today.
