(Feb 17, 2025) In the late 1980s, the Jamaican bobsled team became a sensation and a curiosity...a country known for beaches and reggae sending a team to race down an icy track. Today, the new generation trains in Lake Placid, and they're determined to win it all. Also: State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli warned that Gov. Hochul's budget is vulnerable to potential federal cuts from the Trump administration.
C is for Cool Runnings! This week we head to the Winter Olympics with the first ever Jamaican Bobsled Team! We we joined by Josh of The Evil Deaths to FEEL THE RYTHYM and FEEL THE RHYME! What are your thoughts on this 1993 Disney sports classic?!
Pete Jansons, Joe Weiss, and Skoo Walker are back with all the latest updates from Lake Forest!
Today there's a lot of whinging about the weather, a lot of kids tryna get rich and a lot of racing through corridors! Enjoy!
The Winter Olympics kicked off in Calgary on 13th February, 1988 - but the stand-out stars of the event did not qualify for a medal. Rather, the four-man Jamaican Bobsled team - who would later become (unreliably) immortalised in the Disney comedy ‘Cool Runnings' - became a testament to the intersection of determination, investment, and sporting excellence. The brainchild of Americans George Fitch and William Maloney, the concept was influenced by Jamaica's annual Pushcart Derby, and supported in part by the Tourist Board. Participants, including helicopter pilot Dudley Stokes, were recruited via the pair's connections to the Jamaican military. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly pick out fact from fiction in the Hollywood retelling of the saga; consider the legacy of Jamaica's first-time involvement with this cold-weather sport; and reveal how reggae music really did help the team make it to the competition… Further Reading: • 'I Was in The Jamaican Bobsled Team That Inspired 'Cool Runnings'' (Newsweek, 2022): https://www.newsweek.com/i-was-jamaican-bobsled-team-that-inspired-cool-runnings-1675732 • ‘Jamaican bobsleigh team: Everything you need to know about Cool Runnings, the 1988 Olympic Games, and more' (Olympics, 2021): https://olympics.com/en/news/jamaican-bobsleigh-team-1988-winter-olympics • ‘Jamaican Bobsleigh Team Debut At Calgary Winter Olympics' (Olympics, 1988): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm4DjRcmoPY Love the show? DEVON HARRIS is a Motivational Speaker and former Olympian. He was one of the original members of the world-famous first ever JAMAICAN BOBSLED team that inspired the legendary feel good film: COOL RUNNINGS... ⏬ We talk about the real true-story behind the movie, including how Devon went from the dangerous ghetto of Olympic Gardens, to the (Winter) Olympic Games, the real name of the bobsled (not Tallulah), Cool Runnings FAQs, and more. HAVE YOU MET... DEVON HARRIS
Devon Harris always had a passion for sport and dreamed of competing in the Olympics as a teenager. He spent his childhood in Haughton, a rural district in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, but moved to Olympic Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica. "The thing that I would say kept me sane was school. I loved school. ... I loved to play and guess where I could play? At school. So I discovered sports. ... The thing I loved about sports was regardless of what your situation was off the field or on the field, man, it's my heart against yours; it's me against you and what you can bring to the table." Harris said he was 15 years old when he had dreamed of being an Olympian. "It's 1979 and I'm 15 years old and it was a year before the Moscow Olympic Games and ABC Wide World of Sports — American TV — had a series called Road to Moscow, and they showcased athletes from around the world, different nationalities and disciplines," he said. "And what I saw in that series were these very average and ordinary people, but they had extraordinary dreams and they had an equally extraordinary desire to achieve those dreams." Before pursuing his dream to become an Olympian, Harris enlisted in the army and in 1987, he was asked to try out of the first-ever Jamaican bobsledding team. "We do this in Jamaica, called the Pushcart Derby, and two Americans who lived in Jamaica saw that and thought it looked like bobsledding," he said. "They came to the army looking for athletes, and that's when I initially heard and as I mentioned, I was not interested. ... I thought it was the most absurd, ridiculous idea ever conceived by a man and I remember saying nobody could ever get me to go on one of those things until my Colonel suggested that I try out for the team." With the idea in his head, Harris tried out of the team and earned one of four sports; he was going to attend the 1988 winter Olympics. "That day I was literally flying around the beach. I just like, 'Oh,' so I was like, 'Whoa, I'm on the team, right?' Not officially, but yeah, I really felt like Superman," he said. It was the Caribbean country's first Winter games, but hardly its last. In the years since, Jamaica has appeared at every Winter Olympics outside the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy. Team Jamaica will be competing in the 2022 winter games; it has qualified for the four-man bobsled and two other bobsled events in Beijing. On this episode of What happened to...? Harris describes his journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics and Erica speaks with the current Jamaican bobsled team, which is looking to build upon the success of previous teams. At age five, Danusia watched Elena Zamolodchikova of Russia compete on TV, and decided then and there that she wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. 22 years later, Danusia's dream is coming true: she'll be Jamaica's second-ever Olympic gymnast. In this episode, we begin by talking about how Danusia got into gymnastics, talk about what it means to represent Jamaica, and transition to discuss the power of positive manifestation. Danusia has missed the last two Olympics by literally one spot each, so she knows a thing or two about resilience, and she wants to pass it on. Contributing experts include: Wanda Tebby (Danusia's Mother), Ms. Val (Danusia's Gymnastics Coach, UCLA), and Devon Harris (Founding Member, Jamaican Bobsled Team).
The greatest Winter Olympic sport has arrived and its courtesy of the Jamaican Bobsled Team! The guys feel the rhythm discussing watching this movie for the first time as a kid and what they remember most. The guys talk about how fair the “Olympic Trials” are and Joe touches on his love of Red Stripe. The guys all rave about the performance from Doug E. Doug and discuss how this movie could have legitimately 5 MVP’s. Paul’s Florida roots come out as they discuss the brutal cold of Canada and they see Pride and Power while dissecting one of the best and favorite scenes. The guys close with their thoughts on the differences of the movie and how much the last scene still gets them to this day. Everyone loves a good before and after. Home reno and makeover shows keep us transfixed on the screen until the exciting big reveal. No one would want to watch if everything just stayed the same, right? As we think longingly about normal life, pre-Covid and dream about returning to a new normal, what if we decided to change our thinking? Instead of just getting back to the same or normal, this could be an opportunity for transformation. We believe God wants to do a work in us that is so much better than normal. Let us desire to be Spirit-led and God-centered. Normal is so boring. Things get exciting as we head to Jamaica to craft our own Bobsledding team! Oh wait, that's just the plot of Cool Runnings (1993). We both enjoyed this film, and saw it as a step up from our previous beloved family film — Space Jam. While not entirely historically accurate, this film captures the fun and spirit of the Jamaican bobsled team, while upping the drama just enough to make it work. We also pitch our ideas for Cool Runnings 2, and boy are they good.

The team (consisting of Devon Harris, Dudley Stokes, Michael White, and last minute replacement Nelson Stokes) debuted at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. There they quickly became a fan favorite largely because of their status position as the ultimate 'underdog' story of the games. This team was the inspiration for a major motion picture, Cool Runnings. The characters in the film are fictional, although the original footage of the crash is used during the film. The film's depiction of the post-crash rescue was changed to show the bobsledders carrying the sled over the line on their shoulders for dramatic effect.
