This week we take it back to 2021 with our review of the Disney - Pixar film Luca! We skipped over this film last year so we decided now was a good time to talk about it! The movie is directed by Enrico Casarosa and features the voice talents of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Glazer, and Emma Berman. We talk about our likes and dislikes for the film and how this is a "good" Pixar movie but maybe not a "great" Pixar movie. We also have a lengthy discussion about the definition of "Thematic Elements" in a movie's MPA rating and discuss Ezra Miller's latest hijinks in Hawaii. Follow the show on social media!

The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Philip and Hannah welcome new guest Alex to the ThawedCast to discuss the new film from Pixar, 'Luca,' released in the U.S. exclusively on Disney+ on June 18th. This directorial debut from Enrico Casarosa, who previously made the Pixar short 'La Luna' (2011), follows an Italian shepherd boy who lives with his family under the sea. Unlike classical merpeople, however, these sea monsters become fully human when up on dry land, apart from smelling a bit fishy. Luca meets Alberto, a fellow monster who lives among the humans. Enchanted by the surface world, Luca embarks on increasingly elaborate attempts to assimilate into human society, finding friendship, family, and mischief along the way. Tune in for Arthur's opinions on Luca, Pixar's 24th film (but not before he momentarily digresses at the beginning to touch on his faulty Wi-Fi that had most likely been caused by the Pacific Northwest heat wave, followed by the matter of that garbage bag Bill Cosby being released from prison). Directed by Enrico Casarosa (the 2011 Oscar-nominated Pixar short La Luna) in his feature-length directorial debut, produced by Andrea Warren (Cars 3), and written by Jesse Andrews (the sole writer of Every Day) and Mike Jones (one of three writers of Soul), the movie follows a boy called Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay) as he and his new friend Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer) explore the Italian seaside town of Portorosso with hopes of getting a Vespa and seeing the big world out there, all while concealing their true identities as sea monsters. Mickey's Mix Magic lit up the night with a special 4th of July segment added to the end. The crowds for this performance were huge and looked like Disneyland before the pandemic. Once the show was over, getting out of the park took a while since the park closed soon after. – https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ With the recent 4th of July celebration here in the US this past week, the Disney Parks Blog posted about the Flag Retreat Ceremony and it returning to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on July 1st. Disneyland's flag retreat has been happening daily since the reopening on April 30th. The ceremony is one of the park's oldest traditions. The flag retreat ceremony happens daily in the late afternoon in Town Square. The park calendar has the Haunted Mansion going down for refurb from August 15th through September 3rd. This typically means only one thing! Haunted Mansion Holiday could be returning this year! Disney has not confirmed this at this time, but it seems likely. – https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ Guests are once again enjoying the frosty peaks of Matterhorn Mountain, since it has reopened as of July 2nd. On July 17th, a new Coco scene will be coming to Mickey's PhilharMagic in Disney California Adventure. “Un Poco Loco” will anchor the new scene, with Germaine Franco, one of the original composers from the movie, producing the score that is unique to the show. Disneyland Paris will also debut the addition on July 17th, with Disney World getting it for their 50th anniversary. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/07/disney-and-pixars-coco-coming-to-mickeys-philharmagic-on-july-17/ Disneyland Paris welcomed guests back to its parks recently, and with that a new FastPass option that may come to the US parks as well. Premiere Access, not to be confused with the same name as Disney+ Premiere Access, allows guests to purchase one “Premiere Access” at a time, ranging from $9.50 to $17.75, depending on the attraction. Some attractions will also have a virtual queue, which could mean the only way to ride an attraction is to pay for it. – https://www.micechat.com/295719-disneyland-update-summer-gets-normaler/ With all the great, happy news coming out of the resort lately, there is a bit of disappointing news as well. In this episode of PixMix, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2021 Pixar animated film Luca featuring the directing debut of Enrico Casarosa who had worked on the Pixar short La Luna. The story is about a group of sea monsters named Luca and Alberto journeying into a small Italian town called Portorosso to get themselves a Vespa to travel where they wish to get their freedom. Luca is trying to get freedom from his overprotective parents while Alberto lives the way he wants due to his father letting him live his own life. The only way they can get a Vespa is if they win the Portorosso Cup Race involving with swimming, eating pasta, and biking. They team up with a girl named Giulia and together they train to win the Cup as well as Luca learning about life in the surface.    Luca was released on Disney+ due to COVID-19 on June 18, 2021 with some critics and fans saving positive reviews on its more laidback, atmospheric, and simple approach while others feel that Pixar is losing their touch on telling compelling stories with deep morals, especially after being released after the critically acclaimed film Soul.

The latest from Pixar, Luca tells the story of a young sea monster who yearns for adventures beyond his childhood home, and finds it by exploring the town of Portorosso with his best friend. Inspired by influences as varied as Federico Fellini and Hayao Miyazaki, and aiming to explore a sense of nostalgia, and what it means to be different, Luca stars Jacob Tremblay and is the feature directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa. We talk about whether this film hits the spot, and where it ranks among Pixar's films.
