Tad Nakamura, the director of Sundance-bound "Third Act," reflects on his latest documentary, which centers on his father Robert Nakamura, a distinguished filmmaker frequently recognized as a trailblazer in Asian American media. Tad drew inspiration from his father's 1974 short doc “Wataridori: Birds of Passage”.Tad shares the unique experience of growing up in a filmmaking family, the pressures of legacy, and the profound emotional connections that arise from documenting family stories. The conversation also touches on the transformative power of cinema as a means of exploring time and relationships. Also explored are the challenges of living in the moment, the role of art in coping with life's difficulties, the importance of community and legacy in the creative process, and the significance of elders in providing wisdom and guidance. What Movies Are You Watching?Like, subscribe and follow us on our socials @pastpresentfeature

Was waren die Folgen?

The dog in the first film was a mere victim, in the second it's a passive companion, and in the third dogs actively bite the shit out of people to help John Wick. That's got to be progress. The third instalment of the story continues the emphasis on unreconstituted action, while also adding turns from the likes of Anjelica Huston, Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne. From the filmmakers behind the Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent comes their latest epic, Birds of Passage, a tale about indigenous traditions and the corrupting forces of wealth and power, set against the backdrop of the Colombian marijuana boom of the 1970s. A film of both gangsters and spirits, corruption and fratricidal war, this is a thrilling depiction of the origins of the drug trade told through the story of an indigenous Wayuu family's downfall when greed, passion and honour collide, putting their lives, culture and ancestral traditions at stake.Discussing the films this week are Jake Cunningham, Caitlin Quinlan, Alasdair Bayman and Mark TowersFollow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@csquinlan - Caitlin@alasdairbayman - Alasdair@MarkDTowers - MarkProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast.

Our pairing of sci-fi action films with a side of meditation on memory and identity brings in the new CAPTAIN MARVEL to see how Carol Danvers’ journey of lost and reclaimed memories looks next to the very different (and much bloodier) journey taken by Douglas Quaid in Paul Verhoeven’s TOTAL RECALL. We share our reactions to CAPTAIN MARVEL and its choice to center its narrative on an amnesiac hero, then bring in TOTAL RECALL to compare the two films’ approaches to their central ideas about memory, how they function as science-fiction stories, how they treat their female characters, and more. From the Oscar nominated team behind the genre-defying Embrace of the Serpent, comes an equally audacious saga centered on the Wayúu indigenous people during a crucial period in recent Colombian history. Torn between his desire to become a powerful man and his duty to uphold his culture's values, Rapayet (José Acosta) enters the drug trafficking business in the 1970s and finds quick success despite his tribe's matriarch Ursula's (Carmiña Martínez) disapproval. Ignoring ancient omens, Rapayet and his family get caught up in a conflict where honor is the highest currency and debts are paid with blood. A sprawling epic about the erosion of tradition in pursuit of material wealth, Birds of Passage is a visually striking exploration of loyalty, greed, and the voracious nature of change. Co-directors Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego join us for a conversation on their beautifully crafted mix of drug-trade epic and intimate family saga.
