With North Korea becoming ever more repressive and closed to the outside world, what is the best path to change? For some, aggressive advocacy for human rights is needed; for others, especially an older generation of North Koreans who have found their way to the south, unification of the two Koreas should be the priority.  Still others, particularly the younger generation of South Koreans, doubt the value of devoting a lot of energy and resources to changing the status quo.   Hanna Song, Executive Director of the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights, reflects on what underlies the differing views and ambivalence and argues that it's critical to understand and listen to those who have escaped from North Korea. And in the Coda, a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer relies on soccer to keep things cordial. Hey there, my wise friends and welcome to Episode 40 of The Collective Wisdom Podcast. I have an amazing guest to bring Season 4 to a close. Daniel Bauer is a teacher, coach and mentor. it's fair to say, to millions of people. He runs a really successful podcast called Better Leaders Better Schools, which although it's aimed at educators and school leaders, is actually relevant for anyone who wants to seek some professional development. He asks better questions, he has conversations with really inspired people, and his love of learning comes through all the time. Danny believes that the number one thing that makes a difference to students is the quality of the teaching and the quality of leadership in schools. And as a school leader himself, he could never quite understand why schools were set to compete against one another, when actually if they collaborated and supported and encouraged one another, school leaders learn to get better together. So he set up a series of masterminds and has just written his latest book, which is called 'Mastermind Unlocking Talent Within Every School Leader' And it's all about the wisdom and experience that he's learned in the process of setting up these masterminds. Oliver Mtukudzi is one of the great Zimbabwean/Shona musicians within the post-colonial history of Zimbabwe. He is a musician who lived out ethics of community, relationship, and dialogue in challenging listeners with songs of advice and dialogues of questions. With Dr. Jennifer Kyker, we explore how his music is an expression of Hunhu (related to the South African concept of Ubuntu). At its simplest level, Hunhu is a description of interdependent nature of our relationships, being a person through others. At a more complex level, we explore how Mtukudzi's songs of Neria, Tozeze Baba, Wasakara, and Izere Mjepo transform and deepen notions of dialogue, empathy, multiple interpretations, and take a strong stand in advocacy of justpeace and humane care.

The Documentary Podcast

Oliver Mtukudzi was loved by people all over the world for his unique melodies – and by Zimbabweans for the messages of hope contained in his lyrics. There was a huge outpouring of grief when he died on 23 January 2019. His songs spoke out against women who were thrown out of homes when their husbands died, the stigma of HIV/Aids and spoke up for children suffering at the hands of alcoholic, abusive fathers. To the chagrin of some, he steered clear of direct political confrontation with former president Robert Mugabe. But his 2001 song Wasakara, meaning "You Are Too Old", was banned as it was seen as a coded reference to Mugabe. The BBC’s Kim Chakanetsa paints an intimate portrait of one of Africa's musical giants

The wait is over. The Muffinz have finally released their much-anticipated sophomore album, "Do What You Love"-- following the success of their critically-acclaimed, award-winning debut, "Have You Heard" in 2012. After touring widely since the release of their first album (selling out venues like New York's famous Apollo Theatre along the way), and sharing the stage with legendary artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Oliver Mtukudzi (who features on their latest album), I asked them to give an honest account of what it's really like to "be a Muffin". I also get a little personal in this episode as I reveal some interesting shared history I have with one of The Muffinz, and reflect briefly on the importance of choosing work that is both purposeful and fulfilling. After WW rolled to fame in Southern Africa, Tuku formed the Black Spirits, the band which backs him to this day.
