The British cellist, producer, and composer Peter Gregson has collaborated with some of the biggest names in contemporary music, including Max Richter, Gabriel Prokofiev and Jóhann Jóhannsson. His own work includes soundtracks for film and TV, electroacoustic works, and a series of string quartets. Daringly, he has also “recomposed” J.S. Bach's six cello suites for himself, a cello ensemble, and electronics. His latest album, Peter Gregson, is collection of contemporary songs without words for cello and a modular synthesizer that he built out himself. Peter Gregson plays some of these songs in-studio. The New Yorker described cellist and composer Peter Gregson as “working at the forefront of the new music scene”. As a cellist, he has performed all over the world, from The Royal Albert Hall to Capitol Studios in Hollywood. He has composed music for award-winning TV shows and movies, including the much loved Bridgerton from Netflix, and The New Pope from HBO. He also crosses into the pop industry, having featured as both cello soloist and conductor for Ed Sheeran on his record-breaking 2017 album, Divide. In this interview, Peter Gregson discusses his latest work, Everything We Hear Comes First from Silence, written for the Omega Ensemble. We hear about his inspiration from composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass, and his approach to blending acoustic instruments with electronics. He shares insights into his reimagining of the Bach Cello Suites, and how a chance encounter with Alan Rickman led him to compose for film and television. The Omega Ensemble performs the world premiere of Peter's new work, Everything We Here Comes First From Silence, as part of their upcoming tour La Musica Notturna from March 24-27.
This story was written by Megan Westberg for the March-April 2025 issue of Strings magazine and is read by the author.Sometime around the year 2000, violinist David Harrington of the California-based Kronos Quartet received an email. Its author wasn't a colleague or a publicist. Or even an adult. This email was, in fact, written by a teenage cellist living roughly 5,000 miles away...Support the show

World-renowned pianist and composer Chad Lawson, in the past two years has been working to reshape the role that music plays in our daily lives, forging a powerful new pathway for healing. On his luminous new double album breathe, he expands on the extraordinary intentionality he first brought to his massively streamed 2020 effort You Finally Knew, transforming his decidedly modern take on classical music into a conduit for stillness, serenity, and self-reflection. Partly informed by his work as creator and host of the iHeartRadio Award-nominated podcast “Calm It Down” (where he guides listeners through techniques for breathing and meditation while tackling mental health subjects) breathe ultimately establishes Lawson as an essential new voice exploring the intersection of music and wellness—all while delivering an exquisitely crafted body of work whose melodic beauty transcends all genre boundaries. With his latest endeavors including undergoing certification to teach breathing techniques, Lawson has recently begun to integrate breathing exercises into his music and live performance. For Mental Health Awareness Month, he released breathe (guided breathwork edition), a new deluxe edition of his latest album which includes a series of guided breathwork tracks, with Lawson's soothing voice guiding listeners through simple techniques. Co-produced by Lawson and London-based orchestrator Geoff Lawson, breathe came to life at the legendary Abbey Road Studios (the same facility where he recorded You Finally Knew, whose standout track “Stay” held steady in the top 25 on the Billboard Classical chart for 80 consecutive weeks). So while the album features guest appearances from cellist Peter Gregson, violinist Esther Yoo, and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, breathe embodies an understated elegance that allows a tremendous depth of feeling to shine through every moment. Lawson has been featured by CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, Forbes, GRAMMY.com, Financial Times, and many more. Connect with Chad: Website YouTube Instagram Facebook
Richie is joined by Peter Gregson and David Whelan. Until recently Peter Gregson volunteered as treasurer for his local scout troop, a position he'd held for nine years. Peter was suspended when someone complained about his pro-Palestinian activism and accused him of being antisemitic. Peter tells Richie why he believes false allegations of antisemitism are being levelled at Israel's critics in order to silence them.https://www.change.org/p/bear-grylls-don-t-let-the-scouts-weaponise-antisemitism?redirect=falsehttps://www.kidsnotsuits.com/David Whelan is a successful television producer. Three years ago, he began looking into the strange circumstances surrounding the assassination of John Lennon. What he uncovered can only be described as staggering. As a result, he is writing a book and producing a film, both of which David claims will prove that Mark Chapman did not in fact kill John Lennon and that in reality, Lennon was assassinated because of his peace activism. Cello players Peter Gregson, Dobrawa Czocher, Dom La Nena and Sebastian Plano discuss working with new collaborators, overcoming creative blocks, and how to define success. Peter Gregson took up cello at age four after seeing James Bond sled down a mountainside on a cello case in The Living Daylights. You may have heard his cello solos in the soundtrack to the BBC's Sherlock series, or on the album ÷ (Divide) by Ed Sheeran. He released his latest solo album, Patina, in 2021. Dobrawa Czocher is a Polish cellist who started playing at the age of seven. She's an award-winning chamber and orchestra musician, and her motto is to never stop growing. At the start of 2023, she released her debut solo album, Dreamscapes. Brazilian-born, Paris-based cellist Dom La Nena spent her teenage years studying cello in Buenos Aires with the renowned Christine Walevska, before a pop apprenticeship backing Jane Birkin. She's one half of Birds on a Wire, and her stage name translates as “Dom the Little Girl”, an allusion to her time as a child prodigy. Sebastian Plano is an Argentinian cellist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, who is best known for his unique approach to music creation: Uninterrupted nights playing and recording every single note by himself in his Berlin studio, layering each musical phrase at a time.
Cellist and composer Peter Gregson joins Jess from LA. They share some of their favourite tracks and new discoveries, including Steve Reich's Different Trains, a special recording of Schubert's String Quintet, Bach's Mass in B minor, and songs by Eva Cassidy and Bon Iver.

I'm joined by composer, cellist and deutsche grammophon artist, Peter Gregson. We got to know each other working together as musicians and bonded during lockdown when covid meant that recording studios closed their doors. We both have studios at home which meant that we could collaborate on projects both of Peter's own and for other composers. We both share an interest in the technical side of recording seeing the technonogy as an inevitable extension of our own instruments. A way to extend the possiblities for ourselves as musicians. His latest album, Quartets 2 and 3 is out on 11th of november 2022, please see the link at the bottom of the show notes to hear itWe met at Air Studios in London where Peter has a writing room and where I spend a lot of my working life.Read more about Peter's life and career here:https://petergregson.co.uk/aboutListen to his latest album here:https://petergregson.ffm.to/quartets3and4.OWE Hosted on Acast. Co-produced by Lawson and London-based orchestrator Geoff Lawson, breathe came to life at the legendary Abbey Road Studios (the same facility where he recorded You Finally Knew, whose standout track “Stay” climbed the Billboard Classical chart for 111 weeks). The lavishly orchestrated opening section features the lush string work of cellist Peter Gregson, violinist Esther Yoo, and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as Lawson muses on such matters as the durability of true love (on “fields of forever”), the sometimes-painful tension between family life and creative practice (on the breathtakingly bittersweet “with you”), and the pure euphoria of joyful infatuation (on “this is what love is,” whose waltz-like movement perfectly echoes the nervous flutter of new romance). The album's latter half is comprised of solo piano arrangements that highlight Lawson's attentive sculpting of melody, an element he regards as the most vital channel for emotional expression.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Breathe (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store)Your purchase helps to support our show! British composer and cellist Peter Gregson is a prolific artist whose work spans music for film, TV series, and dance as well as five studio albums. Although he has composed music for string ensembles and electronics, the cello has always been the centerpiece of his oeuvre, defining his sound throughout. Now, Gregson decides to shift perspectives, inviting Kindt to revisit some of his early pieces and rework them on solo piano for a new EP. Peter Gregson is a renowned Composer, Cellist, and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist. His latest album, Patina, combines strings and analog electronic instruments in an effort to capture the humanity and life in each instrument for emotional impact. Peter composes for television, film, and games, including placements in the film Blackbird and HBO's The New Pope. Peter and I spoke about his work as a composer and producer. We focused quite a bit on capturing life in recordings. Peter shared some interesting thoughts about the way microphone placement can bring out the "grit" in the cello, and how he uses techniques like this to give his music a "lived-in" feeling, not unlike a favorite pair of jeans. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bryan Senti over Zoom video.Rising composer and violinist/violist Bryan Senti's new album Manu is out now on Naïve Records.Manu is the first crossover album for the classically trained Senti, a first-generation Cuban/Mexican- and Colombian-American, combining western neo-classical traditions with the Latin American folk music his parents grew up with.Unique among classical releases, the parts of Manu were recorded individually, enabling the record to be released in Dolby Atmos as well as with a traditional audio mix. This unusual recording process gave engineer Francesco Donadello a unique opportunity to push the mixes, creating an illusion of three-dimensionality that plays on the psychedelic character of the music. In 2020, Senti turned 38 and had his first child. “When I thought about the stories that I wanted to impart to her, the things I wanted her to learn from me, I thought back on what things I had learned as a child, or wished I had learned,” he says of writing Manu. “What I wished I had learned was an ability to cherish both a Hispanic and American identity equally.”Bryan Senti is based in Los Angeles; recent collaborations include projects with Dustin O'Halloran and Peter Gregson for Deutsche Grammophon. His film and TV career began with Michael Almereyda's Experimenter in 2014 and since then he has worked on multiple films and TV shows including the BAFTA winning series “Save Me” (2021) by Lennie James. Currently he's scoring the BBC 3 musical “Mood” by Nicôle Lecky. In addition to working on classical music, Senti's experimental pop project Ex Mykah is signed to the London-based Kowloon Records and his LP 16, 17 was released in 2018. He also collaborated with Mark Ronson on his production Carbon Life, performed by the Royal Ballet, and has toured and recorded for the Canadian singer-songwriter Feist.Senti received a master's in music composition from The Yale School of Music in 2009.We want to hear from you! Peter Gregson joins The Film Scorer Podcast! Peter and I talk about his Recomposed Bach Cello Suites (in which Peter re-examined some of Bach's great cello works), taking me far out of my musical knowledge depth and comfort! We also discuss his excellent new album 'Patina' and his forays into scoring for film and other media. During the conversation, Peter mimics a few cello melodies by singing, which is a highlight that can't be missed. You can find out more about Peter on his website, while his scores and 'Patina' are available on all major services (with 'Patina' also being available to buy from Deutsche Grammophon). It's an excellent album and I highly recommend checking it out!

Peter Gregson is truly a multifaceted musician. He has written music for stage, screen and video games, and as a cellist he has performed all around the world. In this new podcast episode, Peter gives insights about his latest album "Patina" that presents works for solo cello, analogue synthesizers, piano and string orchestra. In conversation with Sarah Willis he also talks about what the album title Patina means, why he treats his cello like a voice and how he experienced recording the album in Dolby Atmos. My guest today is the cellist and composer Peter Gregson, whose music you've most likely heard on Netflix's crazy-popular Bridgerton, and HBO's The New Pope starring Jude Law and John Malkovich. His output even reaches the heights of haute couture in campaigns for Balenciaga, Burberry, and Dior. He's now released his fifth studio album called Patina on the premier label Deutsche Grammophon. It's an unusual album in that it explores the theme of absence, particularly with the posed question, "What happens when you remove a melody?" Patina is his most expansive and expressive work to-date, featuring an astonishing array of analogue electronic instruments, a string ensemble, and his unique solo cello. This is the type of art that makes you pause and reconsider reality. It's not something that is just casual, but rather forces you to understand what is happening through a heightened awareness. My conversation in this podcast explores numerous examples in which Peter articulates this "hyper-awareness" through subtraction: from Disney's Pixar and the concept of "uncanny valley" to Paul McCartney's recordings to photography in a Phaidon coffee table book. While this might seem very philosophical, it really is quite relatable when you think about Andy Warhol's work focusing on Campbell's soup cans or his icon-type paintings of Marilyn Monroe. Examples abound of this hyper-sensitivity to the subject matter, not the subject's existence in the real world. It's the representation of reality versus reality itself. Listen to Peter Gregson's full story in this episode. I hope it gives you a new sense in which to experience life—and most likely a certain angle that you haven't explored. -- Classical Post explores the intersection of classical music, style, and wellness, diving into meaningful conversations with leading artists from an array of different backgrounds. I have been lucky to have had some awesome guest mixes this year. The streak continues with this excellent modern classical mix called "Cello Mood Swings." It's an excellent collection of music that features the cello. Duh! This tracklist comes from loyal listener, Kevin, who was also responsible for last year's Japan themed mix - "Not Seeing is a Flower" Which you can find here - http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2020/07/not-seeing-is-flower.html Kevin collected a bunch of great tracks and I put them together as best I could and the result is pretty darn awesome. Here's what Kevin says about this mix: "The idea for this actually came from Tina Guo's haunting version of the Rains of Castamere (Game of Thrones). As I was putting the list together it suddenly dawned on me just how many women have chosen the cello as their main instrument. I tried to make it female only cello players but couldn't quite find enough tracks. The title, Cello mood swings, fits because as an instrument, the cello is brooding and melancholic. But it can be soothing and relaxing as well." Thanks for another great mix! Cheers! 1. It's an extended edition of BEHIND THE LENS this week thanks to the release of some terrific films and some wonderful filmmakers as we explore the human condition through cinema and individual introspection with our guests TOM PUTNAM, WILLIAM NORRETT, and T. ARTHUR COTTAM, plus our exclusive interview with ROGER MICHELL. First up is writer/director TOM PUTNAM talking about THE DARK DIVIDE. Adapted by Putnam and based on the best-seller WHERE BIGFOOT WALKS: CROSSING THE DARK DIVIDE by Robert Pyle, one of the most foremost authorities on wildlife and acclaimed nature writers, the film is as much about Pyle's exploration of the "Dark Divide" as it is of himself. Starring David Cross and Debra Messing and showcasing some of the most beautiful wilderness this country has to offer, the visuals and soundscape alone make THE DARK DIVIDE a "must see" film! Then, novelist, screenwriter, and actor WILLIAM NORRETT, and director/cinematographer T. ARTHUR COTTAM are on hand for their first collaboration, ONE HOUR OUTCALL, an examination of a longstanding and complex relationship between an "escort" and her client. Non-linear in its construct, the unfolding dynamic and examinations of internal motivations and conflict fascinate. Listen as William talks about crafting the script in its non-linear form and then T picks it up from there, with additional casting and taking the words on the page and constructing a visual design that adds elements of a thriller thanks to interesting (and often challenging) camera angles and editing, only to be punctuated by effective scoring. Plus, discover just how small and collaborative the independent film world is as we hear from all the boys about T. Arthur Cottam providing some ADR on THE DARK DIVIDE while ONE HOUR OUTCALL editor Sam Hook also served as co-editor on THE DARK DIVIDE! And then we go into overtime talking about BLACKBIRD with our exclusive interview with director ROGER MICHELL. Long a favorite and always a joy to speak with about filmmaking and storytelling, I spoke with Roger last week about his latest film, BLACKBIRD, an ensemble piece starring Susan Sarandon, Sam Neill, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Rainn Wilson, and Lindsay Duncan. A remake of the 2014 Danish film, Silent Heart, listen as we discuss the film's themes of a family's love, life and death, the human condition, as told through powerful performances, and metaphoric storytelling thanks to Mike Eley's stunning cinematography, Peter Gregson's exquisite score, and John Paul Kelly's production design. And then there's Unjoo Moon's I AM WOMAN, her biopic on Helen Reddy, and one of my personal faves of the year. Already out on VOD and digitally, if you're a Helen Reddy fan, you're going to love this film. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Nieuwe technieken uitvinden, nieuwe speeltechnieken of nieuwe instrumenten. Johann Sebastian Bach: Suite voor cello in C BWV 1009, Prelude (Rachel Podger [viool]) Johann Sebastian Bach: Suite voor cello in C BWV 1009, Allemande (Kim Kashakashin [altviool]) Johann Sebastian Bach: Suite voor cello in C BWV 1009, Allemande & Courante (Lucia Swarts [cello])Conlon Nancarrow: Study for player piano 3a + 3c (Conlon Nancarrow [pianola])Conlon Nancarrow: Study for player piano 3c + 6 (Ivo Janssen [piano] & Calefax Rietkwintet)Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Peter Gregson: Cello Suite nr 3 in C BWV 1007 (Peter Gregson e.a. [cello, elektronica]) George De Decker: Wit in Wit, Goldberg Variations Revisited for piano solo & tape (Geert Callaert [piano])
Johann Sebastian Bach, Suite voor cello nr.1, BWV.1007; Sarabande, Quirine Viersen (cello) Johann Sebastian Bach, Suite voor cello nr.1, BWV.1007; Sarabande, Raaf Hekkema (saxofoon) Johann Sebastian Bach / Peter Gregson, Suite voor cello nr.1, BWV.1007; Sarabande, Peter Gregson, cello & Cello Ensemble Johann Sebastian Bach, Suite voor cello nr.1, BWV.1007; Sarabande, Lucia Swarts (cello)

I use a fair amount of film music in my mixes and have done mixes of all soundtrack tunes but I have never made a best of the year mix for film scores. Until now. There were no blow my mind scores, like Arrival or Solaris, this year but there was a lot of excellent music to choose from for this mix. As an ambient guy, I lean towards more atmospheric film scores. I'm not at all interested in the soundtrack for the new Star Wars film or Avengers Endgame. So in my list of 2019 favs there are the usual suspects - Clint Mansell, Max Richter, Cliff Martinez & Johann Johannsson. Along with great music from folks like Hildur Guðnadóttir, Peter Gregson, Stuart A. Staples, Daniel Hart, and Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie. One of my favorite film music discoveries of the year is William Ryan Fritch. In addition to the monumental collection of film music, Deceptive Cadence: Music For Film Volume I & II, he released two more film scores in November - Artifishal & Exit 12 which I knew I had to include because they are both excellent. All three recordings are available on Lost Tribe Sound - https://losttribesound.bandcamp.com/ Sometimes I start a mix with high expectations but with this one, I was just trying to cobble together enough tracks to make a mix worth uploading. But I've been listening to this mix for a week and I'm very happy with how it turned out. It flows really well is an engaging listen. Up next Best Film Scores of the Decade. Cheers!
