My frequent conversation partner Blake Smith is back on the pod today to talk about his book-in-progress on the pioneering gay editor Michael Denneny as well as a related essay, “For the Love of the Gay World,” just published in a new anthology. In both endeavors, I think, he's doing some version of the same thing, which is to make his case, that gay men briefly had, then lost, but could have again a coherent, self-reflective cultural and intellectual world by and for themselves. As he writes:Part of what the playwright Larry Kramer called, two decades ago, the tragedy of today's gays is that in order to begin a potentially generative, or productively divisive, conversation about the state of male homosexuality (its culture and politics, its problems and affordances) we must undergo an ordeal of conceptual and historical clarification. Without doing so, we are likely to miss the real objects of our agreement and disagreement, wasting time with opinions expressed in each interlocutor's jumble of inherited, half-comprehended categories. It is hard for gays to talk sensibly to each other about where we are and how we got here; the ideas by which we understand that ‘we' and its emergence in time are so contested and confused. This makes gay thinking peculiarly dizzied, harried and disoriented. It is often in doubt whether there is any gay ‘we' (or any gay thinking) —or whether ‘we' do in fact wish for our talk to reach out to such a ‘we' rather than merely confirm ourselves individually in what we already take ourselves to think and know.In the following I will try to do two things at the same time. I will try to clarify the routes through history by which certain concepts have come down to us, and to trace their relationships and contradictions. Disentangling homosexual, gay, and queer, and the movements by which these terms were conceived and contested, may allow us to talk more with more clarity about the objects of our dis/agreement. At the same time, as I lay out—in a sketchy, rapid, and admittedly contestable fashion—this history, I will show how there came to be, at a few different times and places, a self-conscious articulation of the interest and pleasure that we take in talking to each other about ourselves, and of the desire to perpetuate ourselves individually and collectively that is adumbrated in this talk. Our talking together both reflects and forms what Hannah Arendt (whose relevance to gays will become clearer over the course of this essay) called a world. Which is not a physical place. A world, in this sense, is what is communicable to a group of people, what they can hold together in their talk. It is also the set of practices by which that communicability is maintained (the fact, for instance, of our having a shared vocabulary and grammar, but also of our having reasonably similar psychologies and common objects of perception). Worlds can expand and contract, and also collapse. Whether we want to speak to someone about an apparently external object or an apparently internal thought, the possibility of our doing so successfully depends there being already a world that contains us, our intended interlocutor, and the topic we want to address. His framework involves a periodization of three distinct eras: the “homosexual” phase of the late 19th and early 20th century, when doctors, psychologists, and the men they studied were constructing new categories of identity; the “gay” era that emerged in the mid-20th century and flourished after Stonewall; and the “queer” phase that began in the 1980s and now dominates how we talk about sexual minorities. His argument, stripped down, is that the gay era represented something genuinely new in the world. Before that point there existed various ways of characterizing sex between men, but there wasn't a publicly visible and accessible identity oriented around the idea of two men being together as romantic equals, without one becoming feminized, without requiring a status differential, old and young, top and bottom. This emerged organically from bars and cruising spots and men finding each other in mid-century American cities, and then from that base there evolved a self-conscious culture, one in which Denneny, through his magazine Christopher Street and his editorial work at St. Martin's Press, was a central figure. Then in some respects this culture died, or attenuated. Literally died, in many cases, with so many deaths from AIDS. But also at the hands of the queer paradigm, which supplanted it first in the universities, and then much more broadly in the culture. Queer as an identity, in Blake's construction, did a few things. It conceptualized the queer as a potentially universal, or universally accessible, counter-normative, transgressive force. Anything could be queer, or queered, if it stood or was understood at certain angles to the normative.More problematically, from Blake's stance, it subsumed the gay male identity into a larger queer collective identity that included first lesbians and transgender people but soon anyone, including old fashioned straight folks, who wanted to align themselves with the queer. And this has meant, among other things, that there is simply less psychological and cultural energy available for the maintenance and development of the gay world, as Denneny understood it, particularly in the aftermath of the death of so many gay men from AIDS and particularly because gay men don't biologically reproduce themselves. They need more conscious, deliberate reproduction of their culture, their world.A subtext of our discussion, which we reference but don't really delve into, is that Blake's political orientation has shifted a lot over the last year or so, since Trump was left. He hasn't gone left, precisely. His policy preferences remain roughly the same, basically old new school new deal left liberal social democracy-esque. He's just not interested anymore in aiming his fire at certain elements of the left.I think I've undergone a shift as well, though to a much lesser degree, and with no guilt. I'm more interested in critiquing and thinking about the flaws of the right, now that those flaws are so evident and so damaging to the country. That's definitely a shift. But it still feels important to me to critique the left, in part because that's just my beat, but also because the stakes are really high.To this point, my brother Jonathan said something to me the other day that I hadn't thought about but made a lot of sense. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has been involved in the organizing there against the ICE invasion. What he said is that it's pretty clear to him that people in the Twin Cities have internalized the hard lessons from mistakes made after the George Floyd killing. They're thinking, much more strategically than the last time, about how to act so as to elicit sympathy rather than aversion from the broad mass of people in the middle politically. They're sidelining the idiots from antifa and the abolish the police crowd. They're super conscious of the need to avoid riots and looting. Etc.And you can see the results, how powerful and effective their opposition has been. I think critique is a small but important element in the process that leads to that result. So I'll keep being a pain in the ass on that front, but spend more time looking at the right and also try to spend more time in the space where I think blake is right now, which is trying to think constructively, creatively about new possibilities for culture and politics that we might want to explore on the other side of the culture wars. The roots of our farm (today called Pine Hill Farm) run deep, tracing back to 1846 when our forefather, Christian Neitzel, homesteaded this very land, including its fertile marsh. With his wife Sophia and three sons, he journeyed here with fellow Pomeranians, driven from Trechel, Germany, by secular rule and religious persecution, seeking a new beginning in Lebanon, Wisconsin. Upon arrival, these resilient immigrants quickly constructed makeshift cabins against the harsh cold. Many learned vital survival skills, including how to build shelters and even teepees, from the local Ho-Chunk Indians. Chronicles from that era consistently describe only peaceful and mutually helpful interactions between the German settlers and the Indigenous people. Working together, these early ancestors tirelessly cleared dense grasses and brush to create clearings for homes and to sow winter wheat. Without sawmills or equipment, this dangerous and arduous labor took 5-10 years to establish up to 30 acres of tillable land. Once stoves and fire sources were in place, their meals were sustained by the bounty of the land: deer, turkey, quail, partridge, and other wild game and fowl. The winters brought heavy snow and blustery winds, demanding layer upon layer of cotton and wool for warmth. Leather shoes were waterproofed with animal fat against the ice. While the Rock River provided ample drinking water, in winter, our ancestors melted snow to sustain both themselves and their animals. Their perseverance truly laid the foundation for Pine Hill Farm. Eventually, the original cabin home was taken down, and in 1866, Christian’s eldest son, Johann Neitzel, built the farmhouse that stands today on the land. Outbuildings and small sheds have perished, but still standing is also the original, large wooden dairy barn. I vividly remember summer days when my dad baled hay. My cousins and I would perch atop the hay wagon, enjoying the bumpy ride as the tractor pulled us home. The journey was especially exhilarating when we were baling down in the marsh, creating quite an adventure. In those days, before city neighbors, televisions, and smartphones, our cousins truly were our best entertainment. Frequent sleepovers meant my memories are rich with details of their nearby homes, too. I cherished all my aunts and uncles, and was doubly blessed to grow up with both sets of grandparents, which offered wonderful opportunities to learn practical skills like sewing, cooking, and cleaning. My parents, like so many of their generation, worked incredibly hard from dawn tilldusk, yet they were always incredibly supportive of my sisters and me.Beginning with the immigration of Christian Neitzel in 1846, the eldest son, Johann Neitzel, continued the family's legacy, building the enduring brick home that still stands on the property today. The farm then passed to Johann's son, August Neitzel. When August tragically lost his first wife, Augustina Ulrich/Neitzel was sent from Germany to become his wife, helping to raise his children and tend to the home—a testament to the farm's vital needs. Following tradition, the farm was passed to the youngest son, Raymond Neitzel (my grandfather), who married my grandmother, Elsie Gneuwuch. Then, my father, Arnold Neitzel, and his wife, my mother, Luanna Neitzel, purchased the farm from his father, Raymond. As the only one of four daughters to express interest in continuing the farm's legacy, my husband, Jerry Groehler, and I proudly purchased the land. This marked the first time ownership transitioned from the Neitzel surname to Groehler, yet the family dedication remained. In 2011, our oldest daughter, Jackie Phillips, and her husband Jon Phillips, moved into a home adjacent to the farm. Their vision led to a significant transformation: in 2017, they successfully transitioned approximately 80 tillable acres to USDA-certified organic farmland, now cultivating organic cash crops, grasses, and organic hemp. Building on this foundation, our three daughters collectively launched Pine Hill Farm in 2019, seamlessly integrating the farm into their holistic wellness business. Today, the farm continues to thrive, actively nurtured and loved by our children and grandchildren. With several of the younger generations already expressing future plans to stay involved, we eagerly anticipate that the stewardship of the farm will proudly carry on for generations to come.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

En: She knew she had to negotiate with Lucía, even if it meant a sacrifice.Es: Había una cosa, un solo objeto que Sofía poseía que podía valer la pena para Lucía: un pequeño reloj de plata, un tesoro de su antigua vida.En: There was one thing, a single object that Sofía possessed that might be worthwhile for Lucía: a small silver watch, a treasure from her old life.Es: "Es nuestra última conexión con el mundo de antes," pensó, sintiendo un nudo en la garganta.En: "It's our last connection to the world before," she thought, feeling a lump in her throat.Es: Pero mientras miraba a Miguel, decidió que él valía más que cualquier recuerdo.En: But as she looked at Miguel, she decided he was worth more Why Titanic's Passengers Smelled Metal That Night

So, back in 1912, when the Titanic hit that infamous iceberg, things got chaotic real quick. The ship scraped against the ice, and that friction caused some serious damage. Now, here's the kicker: when metal rubs against metal like that, it creates this distinct metallic smell. So, all those passengers probably caught a whiff of it as the ship's hull got torn up. It's like when you accidentally scratch your car against a pole – that smell tells you something ain't right. Sadly, for the Titanic, it was a whole lot worse than a scratch. #brightside Credit: Berlandiera lyrata: Melburnian, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... I am your host, Melissa Oliveri.  In our previous episode, Magpie and Julien get engaged during a holiday celebration with the Sarcelles at Carnifex House. In today's episode we read Chapter 27 – Mirror Pond - in which Lucas experiences the terrible winter of 1925 first hand.Be sure to listen through to the end of this episode for a preview of a podcast I quite enjoy called Spilling the Crime. Now, it's time to settle in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink… and let's get started. The terrible winter of 1925 has arrived. Shortly after the New Year's celebrations, weeks of frigid temperatures and relentless snow falls started taking their toll. Lucas remembers reading about it in Charlotte's letters and in the books and newspapers at the library, but never in his wildest dreams did he think he'd be living it. He is there when Charlotte and Edward pack up their house. He helps Edward and James carry their belongings to the attic. It takes the strength of all three of them to haul the silver-framed mirror that had once been the centerpiece of the dining room up two flights of stairs. He is there when Cerise disappears, leaving Charlotte devastated. He watches as she tearfully tucks the photo of James and Cerise into the lid of the trunk, the photo that he had once held in his hand, the photo that his younger self would find 90 years from now. Once everything is safely tucked away, he helps them wall off the staircase and build the closet in what would eventually become Magpie's room. He helps them pack their cart and watches with a heavy heart as they disappear down the road, travelling toward a future that is uncertain for them, but for which he already knows the outcome.Lucas hears about a man's tragic passing in a fire at a nearby farm, and his heart aches. He remembers reading about the incident while he and Magpie were doing research at the library, he remembers sitting in the man's abandoned barn with Magpie, the ruins of the farmhouse just a few yards away. But back then he didn't know the man, he had no connection to him. Things are different now. The man's name was Earl. He was a lovely, very hard-working man who was proud of his family. He was a wonderful father to his children, teaching them, entertaining them, caring for them. He and Lucas had worked side by side rebuilding the bunting's shed after the wind blew it down. History records events, it records people's accomplishments, but it doesn't record who people are, who they were, not in the most meaningful way. Articles about the tragedy didn't say “He carried his daughter up on his shoulders so she could reach to brightest, shiniest apple in the tree,” Lucas thinks sadly. With the Carnifex family gone, the Shearwaters have invited Lucas to stay with them at Meadow Lane. He and Farfalla announced their engagement over the holidays, to everyone's delight. It was the happiest Lucas had been in a long time, until the cold and snow removed all joy from the town of Pocket. The apple trees in the orchard were chopped down for firewood as the residents of Pocket became more and more desperate to stay warm. One of the last trees standing is the large oak that stands in front of Meadow Lane. Farfalla had desperately begged her father to preserve it, arguing that birds and animals were nesting in it and she couldn't bear the thought of chopping it down. Finally, Lucas had offered to go out to find more wood and Mr. Shearwater had relented.Lucas has spent the last few days riding through the fields with Cormorant, searching for any kind of tree the Shearwaters can use for firewood. They have been using what little reserves they have left sparingly, but the pile of wood is dwindling, with no sign of the bitter cold letting up. His first few excursions had been somewhat successful, he'd found some saplings that would tide them over for a few days. Today he has traveled farther than any other outing, but a blizzard blows in as he is making his way home, drastically reducing visibility. Lucas squints his eyes against the howling wind and nudges Cormorant in the general direction of Meadow Lane. They slowly plough through mounds of snow, the wind never relinquishing its hold on the air. Lucas can feel thoughts of Marius' untimely end creeping into his mind but pushes them away, he needs to focus on getting home to Farfalla. Suddenly, Lucas sees a flash of colour up ahead. He squints, leaning forward in the saddle to get a better look. He sees a girl sitting on a large rock. “Magpie?!” he says, his words carried away on the wind. Lucas reaches up to try and pull his scarf from his face so he can see better, but a gust of wind blows it out of his hand and onto Cormorant's face. The huge animal rears up in fear, throwing Lucas off its back. Lucas lands with a thud, the frozen ground instantly knocking the wind out of him. He can hear the sound of Cormorant galloping away, and takes a moment to catch his breath and think about what to do next. He thinks about the stories he and Magpie heard about Marius, how he disappeared in a snowstorm by Mirror Pond. If he is at Mirror Pond, then he isn't all that far away from Meadow Lane! If he can get up, he just might make it. Lucas turns onto his stomach and lifts himself up on all fours then waits a moment to make sure his arms and legs are unhurt. Suddenly, his hands slip out from under him, brushing away the snow on the surface of the pond and sending Lucas' face crashing against the ice. Out of nowhere he hears a man's voice. Lucas strains to make out the words. He senses movement nearby and rolls over onto his back to get a better view. An older man is leaning over him, a pleading look on his face. “Take me with you!” he says, “Please, you have to take me with you.” Lucas sees his bright white snowy surroundings fade to black as he loses consciousness. The man springs into action, groaning as he picks Lucas up off the ground and carries him as best he can toward the house at Meadow Lane. He finally reaches the front yard and leans Lucas up against the trunk of the oak tree on the front lawn. “I'm going to get help, I'll be right back,” says the man to a still unconscious Lucas, before racing toward the Starling farm across the road. A few moments later Lucas can feel himself slowly coming around. He keeps his eyes closed and wraps his arms around himself to fend off the bitter cold. On the wind he can hear the tinkling of a bell, he recognizes the sound of the Skylark Bell. “I must be near Meadow Lane!” he thinks, his eyes popping open. The world before him is washed in white. He can feel the trunk of the oak tree behind him and realizes the house is only a few yards behind. He props himself up against the tree and turns around. In the upstairs window of the house, he can see Farfalla dancing in front of her vanity mirror, her mouth moving like she is singing. He strains to hear, a very faint tune carrying on the wind, a tune that sounds vaguely familiar. Something about it sends a chill down Lucas' spine, a chill far worse than the burning cold of the blizzard. Lucas closes his eyes, and the singing gradually gets louder. He has no doubt about where he has heard it before. That surreal voice singing that mystical tune. He first heard it in the forest near Carnifex house, an ocean and a century away. Lucas feels dizzy and disoriented, and the sensation of his body and mind separating, floating away on the sound waves. The old man makes his way back to the oak tree. “I don't understand,” he says in shock, realizing that Lucas is gone. “He was right here!”The old man looks devastated as his shoulders slump in resignation. He knows Marius never made it back to Meadow Lane, he read about it years ago.Thank you so much for listening.  Join me next week for Wingspan chapter 28, All That Could Have Been, where Lucas once again finds himself transported, this time back to Carnifex House, but his feeling of relief is short lived. The Skylark Bell is brought to you by Phaeton Starling Publishing and features original music by Cannelle. "Against The Ice" is a survival film based on a true story with deep ties to Danish history. Emmy-nominated "Game Of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau co-wrote the screenplay about Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen's (who he also plays in the film) expedition in Greenland, which left him and his volunteer mate Iver Iversen (played by Joe Cole) stranded for over two years in an unforgivingly cold and harsh environment.
