linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Trevor conducts a solo review of George Tillman Jr.'s, Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World (2023)! Starring Khris Davis as boxing legend, George Foreman, Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World (2023) is a biopic from Christian film production house, Affirm Films. A faith oriented sports drama, Big George Foreman is too sanitized to be juicy with its melodrama, however the production is largely competent throughout, and aside from a couple of lackluster impersonations, (the guy they got to play Jim Lampley fails to deliver “It happened!” with the appropriate gusto) the performances are quite solid. Benefiting massively from being based on a legitimately fascinating and incredible true story, Big George Foreman is a serviceable, albeit expectedly preachy sports drama that to be made eventually, but definitely could've been done better. George Tillman Jr. recalls going to see his first movie while at church summer school. “Ever since then, I caught the bug,” he told me. “I started off writing, but always considered myself a director.” This started with Soul Food in 1997.Thanks to this credibility, he was then able to make movies like Men of Honor, Notorious, Faster, and The Hate U Give. Now he's back with another biopic, Big George Foreman. The simple description of the latest film is “the life and boxing career of George Foreman,” but it's actually an underdog story that focuses on the two lives of the boxer, after George's real-life religious transformation. In this interview, Tillman discusses making Soul Food and Men of Honor, working with Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr., sticking to your “why” as a filmmaker, the iconic movie brat pack, and how directors can find screenwriters to collaborate with. Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World tells the emotional journey of the world famous boxer from his poor upbringings in Texas to his rise to Heavyweight Champion of the World and then onto reinventing himself when it was time to look beyond the gloves. Final Draft's podcast Write On sits down with writer/director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food, The Hate U Give) to hear the inspiration behind this film. "Biopics are very complicated to do, so I just started falling in love with the idea of this journey that this man took from a young man to an older one," says Tillman Jr. on how he chose Foreman's story. "Everybody knows him as the grill guy, so we really showed how he became the pitchman that led to the grill you know." Listen to hear more about bringing this larger than life man to the big screen. Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World released in theaters April 28.
He directed the new theatrical release Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World. But George Tillman, Jr. is as much a film enthusiast as he is a filmmaker. It was seeing Michael Schultz's Cooley High and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver that set him on his career path, which began with Soul Food and Men of Honor. Now he is in a position to give other talented young black filmmakers a helping hand—and he does just that, as a prolific producer of films and television. Leonard and Jessie thoroughly enjoyed talking movies with someone who is so clearly passionate about what they do.

He contrasts this with the audience screening for Soul Foodand how that screening became one of the highlights of his life.Early influences (10:49)Tillman discusses the two films that influenced him as a teenager: Taxi Driver and Cooley High. Taxi Driver stood out to Tillman for its camera work and the way it controlled the viewer's experience.Working with De Niro (20:35)Kevin asks George about his greatest influences and mentors. George talks about working with Robert De Niro on Men of Honor and how De Niro guided him in post-production, even advising Tillman to cut some of De Niro's own performance for the sake of the film. The $150,000 movie success (24:18)Tillman talks about raising money for his first film, going mainly to family and friends in Chicago, and taking that movie to Hollywood and selling it to Savoy Pictures for $1,000,000. Unfortunately, Savoy Pictures went out of business, and that first film was lost, but it helped Tillman make connections that led to green lighting Soul Food.Tell the stories you want to tell (31:17)Kevin asks George what he has learned on his journey as a writer, producer, and director. George talks about making movies from the heart and about telling the stories that you want to tell.Feeling the audience's reaction (43:05)Kevin asks George to talk about audience test screenings and if the audience response was responsible for big changes in any of his films. George goes into what it feels like to participate in a test screening and sit among the audience. He talks about how he made changes to a movie based on what he felt around him at the audience test screening. They then go into positive test screenings as a validation of the filmmaker's instincts.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: George Tillman Jr.Producer: Kari CampanoFor more information about George Tillman Jr.:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/george_tillman/Twitter: https://twitter.com/george_tillmanFor more information about Kevin Goetz:Website: www.KevinGoetz360.comAudienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678Facebook, Twitter, Instagram: @KevinGoetz360Linked In @Kevin GoetzScreen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. Herdís Stefánsdóttir is a composer of music for multimedia, a songwriter, and an electronic musician. Her compositional endeavors — installations in museums, dance, theatre, and a successful electronic music duet she is a part of – are establishing her as an expansive artist. Herdís Stefánsdóttir graduated with an M.A. degree in film scoring from New York University in 2017. Since graduation she has scored two feature films, an HBO series and a few short films. She won the 2022 Icelandic Music Award for her score to the FX series Y: the Last Man and was also nominated for her score in Ry Russo-Young's MGM/Warner Bros. feature film The Sun Is Also a Star. Her other scoring work includes the HBO series We're Here, and in 2022 she co-scored Apple TV+'s Essex Serpent with Dustin O'Halloran, starring Claire Daines and Tom Hiddleston. Dustin O'Halloran is an American pianist and composer with four acclaimed solo albums under his own name, and a member of the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen. Winner of a 2015 Emmy Award for his main title theme to Amazon's comedy drama Transparent, he was also nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Critics' Choice Award for his score to 2016's Lion, written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka). O'Halloran's film career began when Sofia Coppola invited him to contribute to 2006's Marie Antoinette, and since then he's worked on multiple films and TV shows, including Drake Doremus' Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Like Crazy (2011), and Marc Turtletaub's Puzzle (2018), where he collaborated with veteran Scandinavian chart-topper Ane Brun for the film's closing song. In 2018, he scored George Tillman Jr.'s The Hate U Give and joined forces with Bryan Senti for Nick Murphy's six-part Sky TV series, Save Me, while he and Bertelmann also reconvened that year for Netflix's The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron. He and Bertelmann continue to collaborate, scoring the BBC's 2019 adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

We take a leap forward in time from our last episode on If Beale Street Could Talk, and look at a more modern story of how the justice system continues to fail African Americans. Written by Angie Thomas with the adaptation directed by George Tillman Jr., The Hate U Give is a sprawling story of a young girl dealing with loss and forced to confront the problems in the justice system and within her community as well. We'll discuss as many of these fantastic characters as we can, while also addressing the problematic white people (intentional and not), looking up 'dap', and of course getting your swirl on.
Fasten your SJW seatbelts because Brenna and Joe are tackling racism, privilege and duality in our most vital (and emotional) Chapter yet as we cover Angie Thomas' amazing The Hate U Give and George Tillman Jr.'s 2018 film adaptation. The discussion about the book and recent racist events in the media brings one host to tears, prompts a rage-fuelled clap back against #AllLivesMatter, but we're mostly here to heap effusive praise on the best YA book we've covered to date. Plus: Brenna goes to bat for book two of Strong Female Protagonist, a web comic written by Brennan Lee Mulligan and drawn by Molly Ostertag while Joe saves his homework assignment with Becky Albertini and Adam Silvera’s cute queer romance, What If It’s Us. Finally, in an unlikely scenario, we have to swap out a pair of YA Bingo spaces. Which ones get the chop? You'll have to listen to find out! This week, we trace the evolution of black American cinema from blaxploitation in the 1970s to what we’re calling "blaxplaining" in 2018. While blaxploitation sought to showcase black actors in dramatic, action-packed films, today’s blaxplaining centers on the challenges of being black in America. We examine three films — "The Hate U Give," "Blindspotting" and "Sorry to Bother You" — and ask if they accurately depict aspects of contemporary black life, or instead merely seek to make some black experiences more palatable to white audiences.Discussed this week:"The Hate U Give" (directed by George Tillman Jr., 2018)"Blindspotting" (directed by Carlos López Estrada, 2018) "Sorry to Bother You" (directed by Boots Riley, 2018)"Coffy" (directed by Jack Hill, 1973)"Slaves" (directed by Herbert Biberman, 1969)"Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song" (directed by Melvin Van Peebles, 1971)"The Devil Finds Work" (by James Baldwin, 1976)"Lady Sings the Blues" (directed by Sidney J. Furie, 1972)"Mandingo" (directed by Richard Fleischer, 1975)"Jaws" (directed by Steven Spielberg, 1975)"Hammer" (directed by Bruce Clark, 1972)"Truck Turner" (directed by Jonathan Kaplan, 1974)"Shaft" (directed by Gordon Parks, 1971)"Blacula" (directed by William Crain, 1972)"Proud Mary" (directed by Babak Najafi, 2018)"The Equalizer 2" (directed by Antoine Fuqua, 2018)"White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism" (Robin DiAngelo, Beacon Press, 2018)"Super Fly" (directed by Gordon Parks Jr., 1972)"Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde" (Directed by William Crain, 1976)"Cotton Comes to Harlem" (Directed by Ossie Davis, 1970)"Mahogany" (Directed by Berry Gordy, 1975)"Dancing in the Moonlight" (Still Processing, 2016)

How I Broke Into: Michael Prywes Interviews Artists and Entrepreneurs About Their Big Break
Cinematographer Reed Morano is the Director of Photography for HBO’s hit new show Vinyl, executive produced by Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger. In early 2013, Reed was invited to become the youngest member of the American Society of Cinematographers; she is one of very few women out of approximately 340 active members in the organization. She has been named one of variety's"10 Cinematographers to Watch", one of ioncinema.com's "American New Wave 25", and one of five innovative cinematographers in icg magazine's "generation next" spotlight. In 2012, reed's work was featured in Indiewire's "On the Rise '12: 5 Cinematographers Lighting Up Screens in Recent Years" and "Heroines of Cinema: An A-Z of Women in Film in 2012." Some of Reed's thoughts on the digital revolution and how it has affected filmmaking are featured in Keanu Reeves' acclaimed documentary Side by Side. She was honored to be featured in Kodak's long-running OnFilm series. Reed's work appears regularly at the Sundance Film Festival including the premieres of Little Birds, Shut Up and Play the Hits, and For Ellen. Frozen River won the Grand Jury prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Actress for Melissa Leo and Best Screenplay) and seven Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture; Reed's work on the film was the subject of an article in American Cinematographer. In 2013, Kill Your Darlings, a 35mm period piece about the beat poets set in 1943, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Jason Leigh was released theatrically and premiered at Sundance, as well as the Toronto and Venice film festivals. Also in 2013, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, premiered at Sundance and was released theatrically that fall; the drama was directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Mackie, and Jeffrey Wright. In January of 2014, HBO premiered the first season of its new original series, Looking, shot by Reed. Reed's other theatrical premieres of 2014 include The Skeleton Twins, War Story, Autumn Blood, and Rob Reiner's latest feature, And So It Goes, starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, written by Mark Andrus of As Good As It Gets. In the summer of 2014, Reed began production on her first feature as both the director and DP; Cinedigm's dark drama "Meadowland" stars Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, Elisabeth Moss, Juno Temple and John Leguizamo. Reed is currently leading the charge on a movement to control motion interpolation a.k.a. "the soap opera effect" on our HDTVs; Reed's change.org petition is supported by nearly 10,000 signatures and has gained momentum, attracting the attention of both the film and technology communities. Reed currently lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and two children. Notes from the show: Her dad suggested NYU film school to her because of her love of photography. All DPs develop an intuition so they can tell from a script how it wants to be shot. No one teaches you in film school what the etiquette is for a cinematographer. It takes years and years to find the right combination of your style, the director's ideas, and what's right for the story. Vinyl's pilot had already been shot before Reed's interview for the HBO series. Reed likes to light a whole space and yield to amazing spontaneous moments more than planning every shot. There's a fear of not having enough light. Reed left film school in no rush to direct. Reed started working in the grip and electric departments on local shoots. Her first "big" film was Returning Mickey Stern, shot on Fire Island, NY. Fellow filmmaker and college buddy Toshiro Yamaguchi invited Reed to join the crew of Mickey Stern. Gripping gave Reed a real understanding of the set. It also provided a paycheck while she shot films on the side. You build up stamina and muscle memory over time. She feels like "just one of the guys"- you have to "have a trucker's mentality... you have to be chill." That time she saw Conrad Hall, ASC speak. The moment she found out she had been invited into the ASC. How she got into the ASC. Her partnership with Olivia Wilde.
