After spending the first part of his career in the New York-based jazz world, Corey Fonville has evolved into playing and producing more groove-based music. With his band Butcher Brown and most recently with Charlie Hunter and Kurt Elling on new album SuperBlue, Corey is exploring playing and tones that are firmly in the supporting role rather than the more explosive/interactive jazz role. Corey is the product of a couple of non-traditional educational environments; The New School in New York and the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA, and his jazz resume includes Christian Scott, Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson and many more. But he has found himself moving past that world in search of drumming and music that's more true to his musical identity and values. In this episode, Corey talks about: How the SuperBlue project came about, and how Charlie and Kurt turned to him to help shape it Being a bridge between Kurt's energy and Charlie's energy Being influenced by Kareem Riggins, Kendrick Scott, Obed Calvaire, and other New York jazz drummers How sounding like other drummers is a step in the journey to sounding like you Ways he's thinking about combining his new musical identity with the jazz world he used to inhabit, and approaching jazz with a production mindset How turning something down or moving away from a certain music requires self-acceptance

Joining host Brian Zimmerman on the podcast today is pianist Jacky Terrasson. Born in Germany to an American mother and French father, Terrasson has been a force in modern jazz since his rocket-propelled arrival on the scene in 1993. That year, two major achievements set him on a rapid path to success: the first was winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. The second was recording his self-titled major-label debut with Blue Note Records. Blue Note has remained a home for Jacky for nearly three decades, and just last month, he released his 12th album for the label. Simply called 53, the album is meant to reflect his truest self as seen from the distance that only experience can provide. With all original music, the album features three different trios comprising some of Jacky's closest musical partners and a few new collaborators. We talk to Jacky about the making of the new album as well as the monumental influence pianists like Bud Powell, Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal on his life. We also discuss his lifelong passion for fine food, his new foray into acting and why the nickname that has hung around him for so long — "the piano player of happiness" — doesn't make him all that happy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brian-zimmerman/support

Today I sat down in the ever lively Clark Park, home of the Annual Community Unity Festival, with Philadelphia Jazz Icon Justin Faulkner. Brought up in a musical household, extremely gifted, and infinitely motivated he began his professional career at thirteen. Since then he has played with Jazz royalty such as Jimmy Heath, Orrin Evans, Sean Jones, Tim Warfield, Pharoah Sanders, Terence Blanchard, Jacky Terrasson, Christian McBride, and perhaps best known as drummer for the Branford Marsalis Quartet. We had a great conversation about a variety of topics including: the origins of The Community Unity Festival, fashion, his acting debut in the film “Bolden”, the joy of listening, coming up in Branford's band, advice for students and much more.  I hope to see you all at this year's Community Unity Festival on August 3rd at Clark Park in West Philadelphia. It's always a blast, supports a great cause, and it's free. http://communityunitymusicfest.wedid.it/campaigns/6489

Corey and I explored the complexity of navigating the life of a creative in 2018. He shed light on the process of developing a business model that has helped him build a following for his band "Butcher Brown". This business model has also set him and his bandmates up to continue traveling and recording around the world for. Fonville also spoke about the challenges of maintaining focus and recognizing that you can only fail if you give up. Per usual, he and I also dove deep into the topic of politics, racial, profiling and how he manages to rise above these challenges and more. I hope you all enjoy this episode of The Working Artist Project. Connect with Corey Here: http://www.butcherbrown.com/ Bio: Corey Fonville, an influential drummer in today's music scene, has dedicated his life to learning the craft and its history in order to be one of the best drummers of his time. As an artist and music-enthusiast, he studied a variety of genres, mostly through his father's music collection, which generally consisted of jazz, R&B, alternative, and funk. His skills are rooted in an eclectic background and call attention to the fact that music is hard to typify. Originally from Virginia Beach, VA, Corey has played with recognized musicians who have not only helped him develop as a drummer but also introduced him to the life of a touring artist. Since the age of 2, Corey hasn't been able to put the sticks down -- music was always his passion. He first started creating a buzz after high school when he attended New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. While he lived in New York City, he played almost every night with prominent artists from the city and quickly made close connections with influential musicians. He eventually left New School to study at the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, CA where he received a full scholarship to play the drums. The Brubeck Institute gave Corey the opportunity to network with many artists whom he aspired to be and to whom he listened when he was a child. Almost immediately after completing his studies at The Brubeck Institute, he began traveling the world with notable artists such as Nicholas Payton, Jacky Terrasson, and Christian Scott. Now, at the age of 27, Corey is currently touring with Christian Scott. Additionally, Corey has his own band Butcher Brown which recently completed their first European tour. He plans to continue recording with them and hopes to keep building a international fan base. Corey has proved that his skills make him one of the most recognizable and accomplished contemporary drummers. Through his touring experiences, he wants to continue to develop his technique and sharpen the skills he already possesses in order to continue playing for audiences whom truly appreciate the artform. March 27, 2014 | Rob Hochschild Guitarist Matthew Stevens has built his reputation on and brought his unique sound to recordings by many of jazz's leading young artists—including Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Ben Williams, Walter Smith III, and Jacky Terrasson—but his forthcoming debut on Concord Records promises to have as great an impact as any of the many albums he has appeared on. Stevens will lead his quintet in a performance at Berklee on April 2, 2014, on NPR's The Checkout—Live at Berklee, in a concert that will be broadcast by NPR Music and WBGO-FM. This episode of Sounds of Berklee spotlights a Stevens recording from 2010 that also features Walter Smith III, Milton Fletcher, John Escreet, and Jamire Williams.

DEEP EMOTIONCécile McLorin Salvant was born on August 28, 1989 and raised in Miami, Florida of a French mother and a Haitian father. She started classical piano studies at 5, and began singing in the Miami Choral Society at 8. Early on, she developed an interest in classical voice, began studying with private instructors, and later with Edward Walker, vocal teacher at the University of Miami. In 2007, Cécile moved to Aix-en-Provence, France, to study law as well as classical and baroque voice at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory. It was in Aix-en-Provence, with reedist and teacher Jean-François Bonnel, that she started learning about improvisation, instrumental and vocal repertoire ranging from the 1910s on, and sang with her first band. In 2009, after a series of concerts in Paris, she recorded her first album "Cécile", with Jean-François Bonnel's Paris Quintet. A year later, she won the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington D.C.Cécile performs unique interpretations of unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues compositions. She focuses on a theatrical portrayal of the jazz standard and composes music and lyrics which she also sings in French, her native language as well as in Spanish. She enjoys popularity in Europe and in the United States, performing in clubs, concert halls, and festivals accompanied by renowned musicians like Jean-Francois Bonnel, Rodney Whitaker, Aaron Diehl, Dan Nimmer, Sadao Watanabe, Jacky Terrasson (with an a noted collaboration in his "Gouache" Universal CD), Archie Shepp, and Jonathan Batiste.  She sings for the 2nd consecutive year for the Chanel’s « Chance » ad campaign. In August 2012, Cécile recorded at the Avatar Studios a CD to be released early next year for the Mack Avenue Label with Aaron Diehl, Rodney Whitaker, Herlin Riley and James Chirillo.Cécile has performed at numerous festivals such as Jazz à Vienne, Ascona, Whitley Bay, Montauban, Foix, with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York’s Lincoln Center and Chicago’s Symphony Center and with her own band at the Kennedy Center, the Spoleto Jazz Festival, Detroit Jazz Festival and other venues.Ben Ratliff writes in The New York Times “she sings clearly, with her full pitch range, from a pronounced low end to full and distinct high notes, used sparingly — like the one I heard a few weeks ago at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on the last word of “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” the spire in a magnificent set. Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor. She also presents a lot of jazz history, and other things…”To visit the Cecile McLorin Salvant website CLICK HERE
