Send us a textIn this episode of 2 Fat Guys Talking Flowers, we sit down with Semia Dunne, the powerhouse Founder & CEO of Flowers by Semia and The Floral Reserve.  Semia shares how her childhood memories of gardening with her mother blossomed into a lifelong passion—and eventually, a thriving floral design studio established in 2000.Semia takes us behind the blooms—from her pivot away from a pre-med path to designing for celebrity weddings, the NYBG Orchid Dinner, to how she started a wholesale floral operation that champions local and international sourcing. She opens up about building community through floristry, finding inspiration from fellow floral artists, and reimagining floral design as a fine art, inspired by the timeless elegance of the Dutch Masters. The Fatty Crew and Semia explore how modern floral trends are reshaping the industry, and how she views floral design as an evolving art form—one she likens to the timeless beauty of the Dutch Masters. This conversation is full of inspiration, artistry, and the kind of grounded wisdom that grows from the soil up.

Although AI is still very much in its infancy, it's clear that the basic skills of drawing and painting, of music, and much more, are becoming redundant. Why spend 5 years in art school when you can create a Turner or a Dutch Master with a few computer commands? In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on Okayplayer's message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship were born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called The Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights Vol. 1.5 first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. His subsequent book, Sontag: Her Life and Work, won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. His new book is The Upside Down World: Meetings with the Dutch Masters, which is about his personal encounters, while living the last two decades in Utrecht, with the great painters of the Dutch golden age, folks like Vermeer and Rembrandt but also a host of other, lesser known but still quite extraordinary painters of that era from the late 16th century to the late 17th century. I framed the challenge of my conversation with Ben as having to simultaneously accomplish two objectives that are in tension: to pay serious attention to his book, which is primarily about a rather distant past, while also honoring the ethos of my podcast, which is about the present and recent present. And we needed to do it in a real way, not a phony “the great painters of the past still breathe vibrantly in the present” sort of way.I think we pulled it off, with flying colors, but I suppose that you, the listeners, will be the ultimate judge of that. Curator Hammad Nasar expands ideas of miniature painting, moving around South Asia and Western Europe from the 17th century to now, with Nusra Latif Qureshi's 2009 digital print scroll, Did You Come Here To Find History? Beyond the Page, a touring exhibition of South Asian miniatures, is truly historic and historical. At its core are more than 180 detailed, small-scale works on paper, dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, the time when the Mughal Empire ruled over much of South Asia. But these miniature paintings are borrowed not from contemporary India or Pakistan, but the British Museum in London, the Tate and V&A, and the Royal Collection. So how did this wealth of South Asian miniature paintings come to be held (and hidden away) in Britain's greatest collections – and what does it mean for this sheer quantity to be here now? Hammad Nasar, one of the exhibition's curators, puts these works in conversation with those by leading contemporary artists from South Asia and its diasporas, including Hamra Abbas, Imran Qureshi, Shahzia Sikander, Khadim Ali, and Ali Kazim. We consider their practice across media, highlighting the different forms in which miniature practice lives and lives on, whether in sculpture, film, or architectural installations. Travelling along Nusra Latif Qureshi's digital-printed scroll, we unpick the layers of portraits, from contemporary passport photographs, to traditional portraits from Venice and Mughal India. With a miniature painting of Saint Rabia, the first female saint in Sufi Islam, Hammad also highlights how women and the body have been represented in Islamic cultures, pluralising perspectives on the past. Connecting Britain and South Asia, we consider the foundation of the world-renowned Miniature Department of the National College of Art in Lahore, Pakistan, and how artists have long engaged with a range of non-Western/European media, including Japanese woodblock prints. Hammad defies the marginalisation of miniatures – due to their size, and ‘non-conventional' means of distribution and display – suggesting that art markets and institutions must ‘grow up' in their appreciation of the media. We also trace migrations and two-way flows, how courtly and Company paintings influenced well-known Dutch Masters like Rembrandt, to Anwar Jalal Shemza, a multidisciplinary artist of modernist and abstract works. Plus, Hammad talks about the ‘empire-shaped hole' in British history, and why it is important that we share uncomfortable histories like the legacy of the East India Company to challenge the displacement of empire, as something that happened over there and then. ‍Beyond the Page: South Asian Miniature Painting and Britain, 1600 to Now runs at MK Gallery in Milton Keynes until 28 January 2024, then The Box in Plymouth in 2024. We hear about the MacGregor MT86 irons, Ram FX77 irons, what makes Zebra putters, formerly used by Raymond Floyd and Nick Price to win majors, the easiest putters to line up, and the exciting relaunch of the Ben Hogan Golf brand coming next month. Clark Dennis started his college golf career at the University of Arkansas where he was teammates with John Daly. Clark says John has been the same guy going all the way back to their junior golf days. Clark turned pro in 1986 and we hear about his first victory on the then Nike Tour defeating Jim Furyk and Sonny Skinner in a playoff at the 1993 Bakersfield Open. Clark finished T6 at the 1994 US Open at Oakmont. He watched from the 10th fairway as Arnold Palmer walked up 18 for the final time in his US Open career. He right in the thick of it until the back 9 on Sunday. We also hear about Clark's back-to-back Senior Italian Open titles and how he came from 6 shots back during the final round of the 2017 Dutch Masters tournament to take home the trophy. Steve Fluke is the Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer for Power2Golf. They've designed a swingless golf club for adaptive golfers who can no longer swing a club. It's a fascinating device which players can dial up distances, change trajectory, and hit fades and hooks. He takes us through what is literally the rocket science behind the club. This episode is with the very talented Tad Retz.Tad Retz resides in upstate New York and embarked on his artistic career directly upon graduating from high school. In those eight years, his drive and daily focus on his craft has resulted in a precipitous rise in national art circles. In 2021, Tad was listed as one of the top plein air painters to collect by PleinAir Magazine and his work continues to evolve with a sophistication well beyond his years.Retz travels widely and paints alongside artists he admires, and has more recently has begun teaching workshops throughout the US. His most recent body of work is a result of his desire to experiment with paint manipulation and to see what different tools can do to the look and shapes of color. He attempts to capture the timeless atmosphere of old American, European and Dutch Masters of impressionism, of which he devoutly studies.Reflects Retz, “The feeling of being surprised at the end of each painting session is invigorating. Through using new tools, thicker paint, and fast drying mediums, I am discovering new ways to suggest reality in my paintings. Through the act of scraping paint off, applying unmixed paint with palette knives, calligraphic brush marks, dragging tissues through the thick wet paint, and so on; I am able to achieve the look that I have been striving for – a look that is timeless and poetic and more in line with who I am as an artist.”View Tad's work Here
