Learn more about your ad choices. The biting satire still holds up! Luke & Corrye pick through Paul Verhoeven's message-laden dystopian action flim from 1987 - a film that comes up smelling like roses in terms of the casting, and its rogue's gallery of villains. The Chumps marvel at the special effects as well as the core memory scenes that are as devastating today as they were when the fellas first say this in the late 80s (that acid scene!). PLUS: Luke tickles Corrye with an OJ Simpson-inspired 5 Questions in light of the notorious Buffalo Bills legend's death. AND: major developments regarding upcoming films from Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorcese.

It is the Prime Directive of The Last Row Podcast to break down one of the most “80s” action movies of all time, 1987's RoboCop. Drew and Badway discuss the unsafe work environment of OCP, the least exclusive executive bathroom of all time, robots pathetically falling downstairs, and RoboCop's sad Ford Taurus. --- Subscribe & Follow Us: Spotify Apple Podcasts YouTube Google Podcasts Twitter Facebook Instagram

Rob and Joseph talk Robocop, a favorite of ours here at YSGOAT. Set in 2043 Detroit, filmed in 1987 Dallas, this movie has it all: Robocops! Melting dudes! Regular cops! Dudes getting shot in the junk! Corrupt cops! Out of control privatization! Drugs! Dudes getting thrown through windows! ED209! Verhoeven! Cops in cars getting coffee! We'd buy that for a dollar! But, first, we discuss Morrissey, and you can probably guess where that one goes. Get your YSGOAT tees, totes, mugs, and more in our store HERE. Check out Rob's Etsy shop to buy his prints, stickers, original artwork, and more HERE. You can also get a wide variety of Rob Israel tees, totes, mugs, and more in his Teepublic store HERE.
Our wild ride through the prophecy laden science fiction of the 1980s continues, bringing us to the meanest possible streets of old Detroit. With it's avalanche of bravado, social commentary and wit, the undeniable classic Robocop is ripe for another installment, even today. But how does the 2014 remake stack up against the OG Robo, and what does it offer in the dialogue about corporate ethics, gentrification and policing, started by the Verhoven original? We get to all that via a dense talk about growing up with the '87 version, and by peeling back those many layers woven by Paul Verhoven, Ed Neumeier, Michael Miner, and company. "Go Robo!" How do musicians deal with the fact that they are especially prone to getting tinnitus? Is there enough awareness on this? These are some of the questions addressed in this episode. Tinnitus Talk spoke with CJ Wildheart, professional rock musician with tinnitus, and guitarist for The Wildhearts. He talks candidly about how live and loud playing for many years caused his tinnitus, how this has affected his musical career, and the care he now takes to protect his ears. We were lucky to have Ed (known as Ed209 on the Tinnitus Talk support forum) arrange and conduct the interview with CJ. Ed is himself a professional music teacher, and in the second half of this episode, our podcast host Sean spoke with him about his personal experiences, musicians and tinnitus, and questions around noise protection. For this special Flixwatcher episode Cathy and Dave from the Cinemile host Kobi and Helen for Kobi’s film choice Robocop! Robocop (the original Paul Verhoeven cyberpunk action film version of course) was the favourite film of nine year-old Kobi, it’s the story of futuristic Detroit where crime is high and the solution is to implant a dead cop into a robot. It should be noted Robocop is not suitable for nine year-olds!! Being Verhoeven it is almost excessively violent, a rogue ED209 peppering an unfortunate employee, Murphy being shot to pieces and the toxic goop incident being particularly graphic and grisly. Surprisingly Robocop hasn’t aged too badly, the stop motion effects from Rob Bottin still look pretty convincing and the performance from Peter Weller adds genuine character and empathy to Robocop. The plot and dialogue maybe haven’t aged as well and forget about the actual science, but it could have been much worse. Scores [supsystic-tables id=105] No one loved revisiting Robocop more than Dave, not even nine year-old Kobi would have given such high scores! It’s no Back To The Future so a 4.5 from Kobi for recommendability, so much love from Dave (probably too much love) which brings Robocop an overall score of 3.87. “Excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening." What do you guys think? Have you seen Robocop? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! Its cheesy. The action is over the top. The violence almost got thing an X rating, Red Foreman is the bad guy and the ED209 is complete garbage. Colin's underwater robot volcano fortress has inexplicably failed to transform into the talking submarine that traditionally transports him to the surface for recording...but that won't stop the Smash Fiction crew from answering another of the most important questions: Which half-man, half-machine do-gooder police proxy is the best at stopping a fiendish robot-themed crime lord from carrying out his fiendish robot-themed plans? In this case, Dr. Wily is up to his wily tricks again, and Mega-Man is unavailable, so three other cybernetic heroes step forward. Will Cyborg's unbeatable combination of bullshit DC Comics technology allow him to boom tube and "Booyah!" his way to victory? Can RoboCop overcome his restrictive directives and take advantage of his lack of wireless ports? And does Inspector Gadget actually try to win on his own before giving up and throwing Penny at the problem? Thanks to Sam Ruiz for suggesting this match and throwing us into possibly our dirtiest fight yet, as well as the dirtiest (in another way, but totally unintentionally, maybe) Lighting Round since...well, since the last time Liz Logan was the judge, probably.
Davip (Ilgiz Shamsiev) is recognized as the most successful and productive breaks/drum & bass producers from the Former Soviet Union. At his 22, Davip has 14 vinyl releases on the best electronic music labels behind his back, as well as over 30 digital labels and CD compilations. 2010 was a real breakthrough year for Ilgiz, when his twelve inch, Ignition/Level Up came out on the cult Hardcore Beats UK label (with Ignition remix by a dubstep act Bare Noize on the filpside). The same year tracks called Vamonos/High Technology (featuring Encode) saw the light through the famous drum & bass imprint Breed 12 Inches (sublabel of Lifted Music). Both records took Beatport, Chemical Records, Juno and many other charts by storm. In 2011 Hardcore Beats released a new Davip masterpiece entitled Brick EP, which repeated the Ignition/Level Up success. A UK magazine Mixmag gave the release 5/5, making Brick the track of the month. In January 2012 two massive releases followed: a drum & bass one called Vertigo/Massacre on Mainframe Recordings and a breaks record Crash!/Sistema on Hardcore Beats UK. Besides producing breakbeat and drum & bass on his own, Davip is also a part of a French-Russian dubstep trio PLAYMA, which he co-created alongside Mars (from Kaliningrad, Russia) and Ben William (from France) in the Summer of 2011. The band is signed to Audioporn Records (UK) and gets prepared for an extensive live tour across Europe. Davip is a resident of the labels: Hardcore Beats, Wicky Lindows, Mainframe. In the past had released remixes and original tracks for Sub Slayers (UK), Rocstar (UK), Sony Music (UK), AYRA (Hu), XSSR (Ru), Subtribe (Ru), Cut & Run, Malpractice, IBWT (Ru), Recorta Y Pega (ES), Fall Out, Ammunition (USA), Dont Panic (UA), Big Riddim (USA), Downbeat (USA) and others. Support: Ollywood, The Crystal Method, Excision, Leeroy Thornill (x-The Prodigy), Downlink, Kanji Kinetik, Reid Speed, Bare Noize, Cut La Roc, Beatman & Ludmilla, Ctrl Z, Imetic (aka The Magnet Man), Far Too Loud, Hyper, Freq Nasty, Wawewhore, Specimen A, Afghan Headspin, VENT, Shut Up & Dance, Antiform, Pyramid, Jay Cunning, Lady Waks, Screwface, DJ Rasco, Ed209 , The Qemists, Black Sun Empire, Chase & Status, Dirtyphonics, Chris Renegade, Spor, Shimon, Audio, John B, Jade, Muffler, Camo & Krooked, Body & Soul, Crissy Criss, Blokhe4d, Bes, Inside Info, Aeph, Neonlight and many others.

Robocop is back! After two theatrical sequels that quickly declined in quality, a syndicated TV series, and a series of TV movies, the cyborg cop is back in theaters with a totally new take on the tale of Alex Murphy. Gone is Verhoeven's ultra-violence and satrical take on 80's business, and instead Robocop is now a state of the art tactical killing machine, dressed in black. Does this new angle on the robot cop work, or should Murphy have stayed dead? Listen to Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart's review to find out!

It's been a long road but we have reached the climax of the Robocop: Prime Directives series. Kaydick and Robocable have infiltrated OCP, planning to use their SAINT computer system to spread the human and machine killing Legion virus throughout Delta City. Only Robocop, his son James, and Kaydick's former lover Anne can stop him. After three cheaply made films, is there anything in this final movie to redeem the series, or does it Crash and Burn? Listen to find out!

Having invented Legion, a virus that will destroy both technology and people, Kaydick is ready to annihilate all of humanity, and with RoboCable as his slave bodyguard it may just happen. Can Robocop avoid OCP's Systems Support team, and his own son, long enough to save the city? And can this film give Prime Directives a much-needed Resurrection? Listen to our review of the third Robocop: Prime Directives films to find out!

We kick off the RoboCop retrospective, and it's as good as it gets!
Robocop, the franchise, was considered obsolete, broken down, and forgotten in the early 21st century. So what better than to make four films in which Robocop, the character, is considered obsolete, broken down, and forgotten? Such is the premise of the Robocop - Prime Directives. Taking place 10 years after the death of Alex Murphy Robocop still patrols the streets of Delta City hunting the mass murderer Bone Machine. Does this R-rated made-for-TV movie bring back the sprit of the original Robocop? Listen to our review of the first Prime Directives film Dark Justice, to find out! Clarence Boddicker couldn't kill Officer Alex Murphy--the policeman rose again as the unstoppable Robocop. But what Boddicker started director Fred Dekker finished with Robocop 3. With a new man in the robosuit, a robot ninja, and a jetpack, the third Robocop film was both a critical and box office failure that would end the original franchise, save for some television projects, and doom Murphy to 21 years of obsolescence. But can the film, written by comic cult icon Frank Miller, be as bad as its reputation? Listen to Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob's review to find out!

When Alex Murphy was killed in the line of duty OCP brought in their best scientists to rebuild him as the bigger, stronger Robocop. When Paul Verhoeven chose to make Total Recall instead of Robocop 2 Orion Pictures also turned to icons of the genre--the Irvin Kershner, director of The Empire Strikes Back, and Frank Miller, writer of the hit Batman comic The Dark Knight Returns. With these big names behind the camera, Peter Weller back in the Robosuit, and a much bigger budget, does Robocop 2 make the original obsolete? Listen to Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Robocop has been the star of numerous comic books, TV series, cartoons, video games, and more. His legacy is even worthy of a cinematic remake, hitting theaters in February, 2014. It's quite the achievement for a character that no director wanted to touch until Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven brought his ultra-violent, satirical aesthetic to the character. The film was originally given an X-rating for violence and decried for its gratuitous gore, but it was a box office success and became a cult hit. Now, in preparation for the new Robocop film, Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob look back at the original. Do the film's sci-fi elements and cynical view of corporate America hold up today? Listen to find out!
