Interview by Angela CroudaceNick Thomas, frontman of The Spill Canvas, is bringing something special to Australian fans this year — a long-awaited celebration of their beloved 2005 album One Fell Swoop. Speaking ahead of their debut tour Down Under, Thomas shared his excitement and gratitude for being able to continue making music nearly two decades on.“To get to do this for even a year, let alone over 20, is a marvel in and of itself,” he said. “We've never been to Australia, so to come over now and play this album in full feels really special.”The tour, a co-headlining run with fellow emo pioneers The Juliana Theory, marks a major milestone for both bands. Thomas credits Emotion Is Dead as a formative influence in his own musical journey, and says he's thrilled to share the stage with artists he once idolised. “I grew up listening to them — now we're friends. It's wild.”The Spill Canvas will perform One Fell Swoop front to back, staying true to its original sequencing. “We spent a lot of time curating the track list as a journey,” Thomas explained. “It just feels right to honour it that way.” After the final track, Self-Conclusion, Thomas plans to segue into a few more fan favourites to round out the night.Despite never visiting Australia before, Thomas is embracing the adventure with enthusiasm. “I'd love to see the Opera House, meet people, maybe spot a kangaroo. I'm also — embarrassingly — a big fan of Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason is my hero!”Reflecting on the recording of One Fell Swoop, Thomas recalled humble beginnings at Black Lodge Studios in Kansas with producer Ed Rose. “It was our first real studio experience. I remember Ryan Pope from The Get Up Kids giving me a shoulder rub while I was recording guitar. I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out.”Over the years, The Spill Canvas has toured with major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and OneRepublic. Thomas fondly recalled an evening where Ryan Tedder listened to his demos and gave thoughtful feedback. “Moments like that are unforgettable. It's what makes this lifestyle feel like a shared journey.”After all these years, Thomas remains a passionate music fan, recently inspired by artists like Medium Build and Bilmuri (not the actor). “Always be a fan,” he said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”Check out the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
The New Scene - Ep. 279: Austin Kihn of Mind Over Matter Records. Keith sits down with Austin Kihn to discuss growing up in Michigan, discovering the straight edge hardcore scene, his early bands and leaving the touring life behind to start a tattoo shop. We also discuss Mind Over Matter Records, how the label was started by Austin releasing vinyl for Evergreen Terrace, the trial and error of Austin learning how to screen print records by hand, some insight into Mind Over Matter releases by The Juliana Theory, Bad Rabbits and others, what's coming up on the label and more.
We throw back to the Year 2000 with Brett Detar of The Juliana Theory and find out what his Y2K survival kit included as well as what else was big around the time of “Emotion Is Dead's” release! We also discuss the ground breaking album and find out what's involved in scoring a movie as Brett has done many including “Orphan First Kill”. All of this, their upcoming Australian tour with The Spill Canvas and more!
Interview by Angela CroudaceAs The Juliana Theory prepares to celebrate the anniversary of their seminal album Emotion is Dead with a special Australian tour, frontman Brett Detar shares his thoughts on the album's creation, its unexpected impact, and what fans can expect in the future.Looking back, Brett recalls the humble beginnings of the album, created when he was just 21. “We were five kids from a small town who recorded in a tiny converted garage studio,” he says. “We made the album for very little money, and to think that it has had such an enduring impact—people telling us they named their child after our band or got married to a song off the record—is humbling.” Reflecting on how time has passed, he adds, “It's wild to think that more time has passed since Emotion is Dead was made than I had lived at that point.”When it comes to the rapid rise to success the band experienced, Brett admits it was a gradual process. “We played local shows for a while, and then suddenly, after our first album Understand This as a Dream, we noticed the crowd size was doubling at venues. It was a shocking but exciting moment, but we were so young, we didn't quite grasp how special it was,” he recalls. The upcoming tour marks a full circle moment for The Juliana Theory, as they join forces with The Spill Canvas, another beloved band from their era. Brett recounts a unique experience from 2019 when the two bands toured together in an unexpected way. “We did a US tour, but we played as just an acoustic duo. That tour reignited our passion for making music together, and it led to new songs, new recordings, and ultimately, us signing to Equal Vision.”Discussing the creation of Emotion is Dead, Brett explains the shift in the band's approach after their first record. “We wanted to expand beyond just making a fast, poppy emo record. We wanted to experiment with longer songs, heavier sounds, and even throw in some Pink Floyd-inspired moments.” The album's title, Emotion is Dead, came about in a joking conversation during the van ride, with Brett and the band brainstorming what would later become an iconic, yet tongue-in-cheek, statement about the genre.Despite the album's association with the “emo” label, Brett admits the band has never fully embraced the term. “At first, we thought it fit, but then it started feeling limiting. We've always tried to push boundaries and not just fit into one box.”Bret neatly wrapped up his feelings, saying; “It feels special to see how much Emotion is Dead still means to people, and it's even more exciting to bring new music into the mix."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
I chat with Josh from The Juliana Theory about the band's impact on surf/skate culture, what to expect on their upcoming Australian tour, and their hunt for local food and drink while on the road. We dive into balancing family life with music, guitar as his safe space, and being a non-drinker. It's true, it's damn true: the PensBurgh Podcast guest chair is filled once again. Brett Detar, lead singer of Pittsburgh's own The Juliana Theory, joins the podcast to discuss a wide array of topics. This week, Brett, Garrett, and Robbie sat down to discuss the Pittsburgh Penguins' recent games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brett also took the time to answer some of our questions. We touched on things such as his introduction to the Penguins when he was a youngster, growing up and playing hockey with his buddies in his hometown, plus Brett gave his thoughts on the Penguins' disappointing playoff run of 2020-21. Brett also shared a Mario Lemieux story that many diehard Penguins fans may be familiar with, but he has his own wrinkle to add to this legendary tale. If you'd like to see what Brett or The Juliana Theory are up to these days, you can follow Brett's personal Twitter account here and follow The Juliana Theory's Twitter page here. Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever. The Grey AM was a punk band from Herndon, PA who released full-lengths on Fiddler Records, and One Day Savior Recordings. They also did splits with Mid Carson July, One Line Drawing, Ruined in a Day, and Juliana Theory. I actually did an interview with Bryon Lippincott about Mid Carson July (episode 127) where he talked about being best buds with these dudes so I had to get them on. I got Todd and Murray on the Skype and this is what we chat about: The Goth Scene Murray creating his own tunings Stealing members from other local bands Playing the first Fest Using fire on stage (this is where the interview really starts to get great) Lighting bottle rockets off their guitars Vampire Teeth merch Fiddler Records Ipecac Catching a girls hair on fire Watching porn with The Locust The crackhead story Shooting fireworks at bands And a ton more Lastly, I'll be at FEST in October if all things work out with this Delta thing so if you have any way for me to get backstage at some shows please let me know. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Brett Detar of The Juliana Theory over Zoom audio! The Juliana Theory have returned with new song and video “Can’t Go Home” – their first new music in over 15 years.“I think people are feeling uncertain right now,” said songwriter and vocalist Brett Detar. “I’d say that it’s pretty impossible not to feel that way. As humans I imagine we’ve always innately known that there’s no way to turn back the hands of time to simpler days but 2020 has fed us all an uncomfortably large dose of unfamiliarity – ‘wayward stranger days.’ Is this uncertainty a new normal? I’m not sure but I’ve always used music as a coping mechanism and I think this year I’ve needed it more than at any other point in my life. Many of us are feeling isolated and removed. Joyous collective experiences like live music shows are gone for the foreseeable future along with many of the other communal ways we come together as humans. Longing for that cathartic sense of collective unity one only gets from a gathering of people, we tried our best to capture the sound and feeling of a large group of people singing a simple melody together in unison in the chorus.”“Making new Juliana Theory music was not really something I thought would ever happen again. If you had asked me 5 or 6 years ago if the band would ever make new music I would have emphatically said ‘no,’” Detar continues. “But in 2019 lead guitarist and founding member Josh Fiedler and I were asked out of the blue to do a 30-show acoustic tour playing our old songs in a way we never had before.” Thanks to good timing in between films (Detar is now an accomplished composer for film including The Devil Inside and Brahms: The Boy II), the duo, who met in a high school guitar class, decided to give the acoustic tour a shot even though their closeness had waned over the band’s hiatus. “Much to my delight the tour ended up being one of the most enjoyable things either of us had done in years. We truly had a great time hanging out and performing together and got along perfectly. If anything, I’d say the time we shared gave us each a new-found respect for one another both as musicians and more importantly as humans. Continuing to make music together after the tour ended just felt right – almost like coming home in a way.”The Juliana Theory rose through Western Pennsylvania’s post-hardcore scene of the late 90s and early 00s and went on to become one of the most highly cited influences for the next generation of alternative artists. Always willing to push the boundaries, the band unabashedly mixed their punk rock and pop influences into a sound well ahead of their time. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of the team as The Juliana Theory write their next chapter,” Equal Vision’s Dan Sandshaw said. “‘Can’t Go Home’ feels modern, yet somehow familiar. This is such an important song for the soundtrack of 2020.”“Can’t Go Home” is written by Brett Detar and long-time collaborator Benjamin Romans (LP, Carly Rae Jepsen) and co-produced by Courtney Ballard (Jessie J), Benjamin Romans, and Brett Detar and marks a new era for the band. “The Juliana Theory never did shy away from changing our sonic identity from release to release but the emotional core of our songs has always remained the same. At no point have we ever wanted to repeat ourselves and retread the same worn out territory and try and fail at recreating a past era of the band,” said Detar. “I like to think this is exactly what The Juliana Theory in 2020 should sound like.”We want to hear from you! Frontman Brett Detar joins Shane to reminisce about the old days starting out in bands like Zao and Pensive, TJT's unlikely rise to the top of the emo scene and major label bidding war, and of course the last 15 years with Brett having a solo country music career, scoring for film, and more! Dawson High was a punk band from Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Their members were Joshua, Jeff, Robbie, and Timmy. I asked Mr. Jeff Kish what their sound was and he said "What do you consider Weston or Digger? Pennsylvania Punk?” I said, “That works.” Jeff is the dude that I mistook Jesse Short for in his interview Episode 76. You can hear that story at the beginning of both interviews. You’ll most likely remember their split with The Juliana Theory who incidentally has a new song out with a music video by Jesse Korman of The Number Twelve Looks Like You (Episode 106). There’s a part in the middle where it jumps from talking about the reunion show to Weston breaking up. You’ll hear me break in and explain what happened. I got Jeff on the Skype and this is what we talked about: Discussing how I mistook him for Jesse Short from Weston The awesomeness of Dave Weston The scene in the Pittsburgh area Following Brian Granik to Barker’s party Playing in Digger Playing in Weston New Bedford Fest The split with Juliana Theory Their reunion show in 2007 Weston breaking up Cordova The scene in Brooklyn in the late 2000s Putting on The infamous At the Drive-in / Knapsack show that’s on youtube And a ton more Jeff works for Universal Music Group so go check out the bands they put out. Today Bandcamp is waiving their fees so go buy as much artists stuff on there to help support the bands you love. If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. The Juliana Theory’s biggest album, Emotion Is Dead, one of the most legendary in the Tooth & Nail catalog, just reached its 20 year anniversary. This episode explores the conditions in which the band and particularly the frontman Brett Detar emerged. The western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia scene, from which Zao and The Juliana Theory are from is another hot spot that emerged and connected to the wider scene in the late 90’s in part by connecting to the Arkansas scene with Barry Poynter through Bruce from Living Sacrifice. Bret was the guitarist in Zao, and lead singer for The Juliana Theory. Both wildly successful 90’s groups and often listed among the favorites of bands of the subsequent generation, many of whom were known for fusing hardcore with sad emo elements and learning how to tie it together in a way that could reach an even wider audiences with some pop appeal. The influence is hard to overstate. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: The Julianna Theory “Duane Joseph” Overcome “When Beauty Dies” Zao “Resistance” Zao “Times of Separation” Bloodshed “Words For The First Time” Strongarm “Advent of a Miracle” Living Sacrifice “Reborn Empowered” The Julianna Theory “We’re At The Top Of The World” The Juliana Theory "If I Told You This Was Killing Me, Would You Stop?" The title itself comes from Jimmy Eat World's "A Praise Chorus", which gives the two a chance to discuss the genius of the Bleed American record. Sanders also remembers the Tallahassee scene that gave him his start, local legends But Lauren, and how 20 years on, emo and punk-pop are having their comeback run. Sanders also shares what to expect from his solo shows, details the plan for more of these solo EPs, gives us an update on the next Mayday Parade record, and if the band will be getting involved in the campaign season. There's been some talk in recent years about the misogyny present in Emo music from the early Aughts. But in what ways did bands from that era get it right and not treat women like objects of their wrath? Welcome everyone to This Was The Scene, the podcast that takes a look back at the late 90s / early 2000 Punk scene, I am your host, Mike Doyle. Random Task was a punk band from NJ who frequented hall shows all across the NJ scene. Ben Jorgensen was the drummer but eventually left the band to front Armor for Sleep who got signed to Equal Vision, toured their asses off and eventually decided to close shop. If you haven’t heard Car Underwater then you should go on Spotify and listen to it as soon as this episode is over because it’s the shatttttt. Random Task was the younger band in the scene who were solid dudes to hang out with any time I saw them at shows. I typically talked to Ben and Evan and still think Evan’s write up of my band’s CD for his zine Braceface was shit and he should go back and do a better one. I reached out to Ben and asked if he’d like to talk about summers passed and he said that he would like that. And this is what we talked about. Peeing on the Hollywood sign Going to the same school as Josh and Gabe from Humble His first show at Teaneck American Legion The Braceface Zine Making a business plan to go on tour Delvecchio's sweet sweet foot The Juliana Theory story AGAINq Starting Armor for Sleep Opening for Linkin Park And a ton more Before we begin, this week’s episode is sponsored by my animation company drive 80 studios. Welcome everyone to This Was The Scene, the podcast that takes a look back at the late 90s / early 2000 Nj Jersey Punk scene, I am your host, Mike Doyle. Mike Pelak didn’t run a label, play in a band, record bands, own a record store, print merch, run a zine or promote, ok wait he did help promote shows with Bomshelter run by Ricky the artful dodger Saporta. I’d always see Mike at a lot of shows my band played at and he just had such a positive and happy demeanor about him. He’d always be in the crowd singing the songs back to bands and then hop in a car with some friends and get to the next show that same night. Sometimes making it to 3 or 4 in one weekend. I wanted to see what it was like from a “fan perspective” so I reached out to Miguel, set up a time to talk and this is what we chat about. Flipside records 6:16 Highstrung changing his life 8:33 His old venue tour around NJ 15:20 How it never took too long to get to different towns to watch shows The Juliana Theory show where they unplugged Random Task’s amps The ecosystem we built by accident Why the size of Jersey made it such a good scene His thoughts on what caused the shift in the scene from good to different The Bombshelter team How he and Dave Flores tried to revive promoting shows When ska went away His stint at Side One Dummy What it would be like to go back to venues now and just have a beer I have 2 more episodes to promote the Lanemeyer, humble beginnings, jettison show July 21 at Debonair Musichall in Teaneck, NJ. However, this time I have an important announcement… it’s sold out…. Totally fucking with you. But imagine if you were planning on going and found out that it was? The actual announcement is that we are ending presale at 5pm Friday July 20, the day before the show. Make sure that this doesn’t happen in real life and head over to this was the scene.com, click the purple button that says CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE TICKETS and get your tickets. Presale is $15 and it’s $20 at the door. As always, thank you to the people who’ve donated to the podcast. If you’d like to do so just go to thiswasthescene.com and send whatever you’d like. It helps me with the $20/month to keep this thing live. I’m still in the process of designing shirts to sell to help keep this thing alive so keep checking the this was the scene facebook page for updates. I’ve officially added merchandise to the website. If you’d like to check the shirts out just go to thiswasthescene.com. Pre-order for Lanemeyer's re-release of their first album "Stories for the Big Screen" is available here I Surrender Records. This is a limited re-mastered pressing of 250 copies that’s on green vinyl, has an etching on one side that says GOD I MISS YOU GOD I MISS THIS PLACE, and be the only place to find our cover of with or without you since that won’t be released digitally. The release date for the record is July 20 which is the day before our show at debonair in Teaneck. Yes, we will have copies at the show to sell. Also, if you’re around Clifton, new jersey this evening, July 13, you should check out the show at the Clash Bar. That’s all I will say. Feel free to subscribe, leave a review and share this with anyone who would love some nostalgia. With that said, lets get started.

Brett Detar is a musician and film composer. He was the front man for the pop/emo/rock outfit The Juliana Theory, whose success catapulted him into a world of touring and recording shortly after high school graduation. 10 years later the band broke up, but they'll be touring again to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the band's origin. Being from western-PA, Ron was amidst their early following and attended many TJT shows. Ron and Brett discuss overcoming chapters closing in life, the band's break up, his work post-Juliana Theory and what to expect at the upcoming reunion shows.
Today we welcome Brett Detar from The Juliana Theory. The band recently announced a reunion tour so it was time to get Brett to talk with us on the podcast. Little did I know but Brett and I were both at a Sunny Day Real Estate show NYC back in 2000 and he noticed my Washed Up Emo shirt at SDRE’s reunion in 2009 as well. After my mind was blown with those two facts, Brett and I talked about his past including obsession with Fugazi, his history with Zao and what happened at The Juliana Theory’s first practice. Along the way and more than most guests, Brett was brutally honest with what went wrong with their career. It was really refreshing to have someone just lay out all their cards like that. In the end, the band followed their own muse and caught a ton of heat for it and in my opinion, just a little bit ahead of their time. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

Marty Lunn was there at the beginning, middle and end (was there an end?!) of our scene. He was nervous it sounded like he was name dropping in this episode. But, in fact, it's only because the list of groups he has been involved with is so exhaustive...Pensive, Seasons In The Field, Sans Culottes, The Operation, Zao, Young Fox, The Juliana Theory, Element 101, Further Seems Forever and more. This epic 2 hour adventure begins with our journey from NYC into the Lincoln Tunnel. Hold on to your hats! The Juliana Theory released three lousy albums and one halfway good album with some really excellent tracks. And really bad album art.
